Measurement of the Neutrino Asymmetry Parameter B in Neutron Decay

A new measurement of the neutrino asymmetry parameter B in neutron decay, the angular correlation between neutron spin and anti-neutrino momentum, is presented. The result, B=0.9802(50), agrees with the Standard Model expectation and earlier measurements, and permits improved tests on ``new physics'' in neutron decay.

Measurement of the parity-violating triton emission asymmetry in the reaction 6Li(n,alfa)3H with polarised cold neutrons

We describe measurements of the parity-violating (P-odd) triton emission asymmetry coefficient in the 6Li(n,alfa)3H reaction with polarised cold neutrons. Experiments were carried out at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (Gatchina, Russia) and at the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France). We employed an ionisation chamber in a configuration allowing us to suppress the left-right asymmetry well below 10^(-8). A test for a false asymmetry due to eventual target impurities ("zero test") resulted in the value (0.0+-0.5)x10^(-8). As final result we obtained P-odd effect (-8.6+-2.0)x10^(-8).

A clean, bright, and versatile source of neutron decay products

We present a case study on a new type of cold neutron beam station for the investigation of angular correlations in the beta-decay of free neutrons. With this beam station, called PERC, the 'active decay volume' lies inside the neutron guide, and the charged neutron decay products are magnetically guided towards the end of the neutron guide. Hence, the guide delivers at its exit a beam of decay electrons and protons, under well-defined and precisely variable conditions, which can be well separated from the cold neutron beam. In this way a general-purpose source of neutron decay products is obtained which can be used for various different experiments in neutron decay correlation spectroscopy. A gain in phase space density of several orders of magnitude can be achieved with PERC, as compared to existing neutron decay spectrometers. Neutron beam related background is separately measurable in PERC, and magnetic mirror effects on the charged neutron decay products and edge effects in the active neutron beam volume are both strongly suppressed. Therefore the spectra and angular distributions of the emerging decay particles will be distortion-free on the level of 10^-4, more than 10 times better than achieved today.

A source of ultra-cold neutrons for the gravitational spectrometer GRANIT

We present the status of the development of a dedicated high density ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source dedicated to the gravitational spectrometer GRANIT. The source employs superthermal conversion of cold neutrons to UCN in superfluid helium. Tests have shown that UCN produced inside the liquid can be extracted into vacuum. Furthermore a dedicated neutron selection channel was tested to maintain high initial density and extract only neutrons with a vertical velocity component 20 cm/s for the spectrometer. This new source would have a phase-space density of 0.18 cm-3(m/s)-3 for the spectrometer.

GRANIT project: a trap for gravitational quantum states of UCN

Previous studies of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons showed the quantization of energy levels, and confirmed quantum mechanical predictions for the average size of the two lowest energy states wave functions. Improvements in position-like measurements can increase the accuracy by an order of magnitude only. We therefore develop another approach, consisting in accurate measurements of the energy levels. The GRANIT experiment is devoted to the study of resonant transitions between quantum states induced by an oscillating perturbation. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty relations, the accuracy of measurement of the energy levels is limited by the time available to perform the transitions. Thus, trapping quantum states will be necessary, and each source of losses has to be controlled in order to maximize the lifetime of the states. We discuss the general principles of transitions between quantum states, and consider the main systematical losses of neutrons in a trap.

Efficient extraction of a collimated ultra-cold neutron beam using diffusive channels

We present a first experimental demonstration of a new method to extract a well-collimated beam of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) from a storage vessel. Neutrons with too large divergence are not removed from the beam by an absorbing collimation, but a diffuse or semidiffuse channel with high Fermi potential reflects them back into the vessel. This avoids unnecessary losses and keeps the storage time high, which may be beneficial when the vessel is part of a UCN source with long buildup time of a high UCN density.

Test experiment to search for a neutron EDM by the Laue diffraction method

A prototype experiment to measure the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) by spin-rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal in Laue geometry was carried out in order to investigate the statistical sensitivity and systematic effects of the method. The statistical sensitivity to the nEDM was about $6\cdot 10^{-24}$ e$\cdot $cm per day and can be improved by one order of magnitude for the full scale setup. Systematics was limited by the homogeneity of the magnetic field in the crystal region and by a new kind of spin rotation effect. We attribute this effect to a difference of the two Bloch waves amplitudes in the crystal, which is caused by the presence of a small crystal deformation due to a temperature gradient. In a revised scheme of the experiment, this effect could be exploited for a purposeful manipulation of the Bloch waves.

Characterization of a ballistic supermirror neutron guide

We describe the beam characteristics of the first ballistic supermirror neutron guide H113 that feeds the neutron user facility for particle physics PF1B of the Institute Laue-Langevin, Grenoble (ILL). At present, the neutron capture flux density of H113 at its 20x6cm2 exit window is 1.35x10^10/cm^2/s, and will soon be raised to above 2x10^10/cm^2/s. Beam divergence is no larger than beam divergence from a conventional Ni coated guide. A model is developed that permits rapid calculation of beam profiles and absolute event rates from such a beam. We propose a procedure that permits inter-comparability of the main features of beams emitted from ballistic or conventional neutron guides.

Testing Time Reversal Invariance with Cold Neutrons

The neutron is a well-suited system to search for a violation of time reversal invariance beyond the Standard Model. Recent experiments and projects searching for time reversal violation in the neutron decay and in the neutron electric dipole moment will be presented.
