Complexity and Multifractal Variability in Multi-Band Emission of Seyfert AGN

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) exhibit complex variability across multiple wavelengths, reflecting diverse physical processes near their central engines. This work investigates the temporal variability of four AGNs Mrk~509, NGC~5548, NGC~4151, and NGC~4593 using multifractal detrended moving average (MFDMA) analysis and Fisher-Shannon information plane applied to their X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical light curves. These methods quantify the scaling behavior and complexity of the variability, revealing persistent correlations and distinct variability patterns across energy bands. The Fisher-Shannon analysis further characterizes the degree of stochasticity and structural complexity in the emission processes. Our findings support the interpretation that multifractal and information-theoretic measures provide effective diagnostics of the physical mechanisms driving AGN variability. This study demonstrates the utility of advanced time series techniques as effective diagnostics of AGN variability mechanisms.

Multifractal Analysis of Human Retinal Vessels

In this work it is shown that vascular structures of the human retina represent geometrical multifractals, characterized by a hierarchy of exponents rather then a single fractal dimension. A number of retinal images from the STARE database (www.parl.clemson.edu/stare) are analyzed, corresponding to both normal and pathological states of the retina. In all studied cases a clearly multifractal behavior is observed, where capacity dimension is always found to be smaller then the information dimension, which is in turn always smaller then the correlation dimension, all the three being significantly lower then the DLA (Diffusion Limited Aggregation) fractal dimension. We also observe a tendency of images corresponding to the pathological states of the retina to have lower generalized dimensions and a shifted spectrum range, in comparison with the normal cases.

Thermodynamic Limit for the Ising Model on the Cayley Tree

While the Ising model on the Cayley tree has no spontaneous magnetization at nonzero temperatures in the thermodynamic limit, we show that finite systems of astronomical sizes remain magnetically ordered in a wide temperature range, if the symmetry is broken by fixing an arbitrary single (bulk or surface) spin. We compare the behavior of the finite size magnetization of this model with that of the Ising model on both the Sierpinski Gasket, and the one-dimensional linear chain. This comparison reveals the analogy of the behavior of the present model with the Sierpinski Gasket case.
