Far-infrared distributions in nearby spiral galaxies NGC2841 and NGC2976 observed with AKARI/FIS

Far-infrared (IR) images of the nearby Sb galaxy NGC2841 and the Sc galaxy NGC2976 at wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 um have been obtained with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard AKARI. Both galaxies reveal similar morphologies of dust rings. They are, however, significantly different in the dust temperature: a cold (21 K) ring for NGC2841 and a warm (30 K) ring for NGC2976, which presumably reflects the difference in the origin of the ring structure for the different Hubble type of the galaxy. In addition to the dust ring structure, a warm dust component is detected from the central region of NGC2841, which may be attributed to the heating by its Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Region nucleus. As for NGC2976, an extended dust component is observed along the minor axis, which shows a distribution somewhat asymmetrical to the galactic disk; this might be associated with the HI bridge in the M81/M82 group that NGC2976 belongs to. By taking advantage of a wealth of the far-IR bands of the FIS, it is demonstrated that the spectral energy distribution of NGC2841 is spatially more variable than that of NGC2976.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 12B_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $Λ$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $Λ$ peak.

The Unique Type Ib Supernova 2005bf at Nebular Phases: A Possible Birth Event of A Strongly Magnetized Neutron Star

Late phase nebular spectra and photometry of Type Ib Supernova (SN) 2005bf taken by the Subaru telescope at ~ 270 and ~ 310 days since the explosion are presented. Emission lines ([OI]6300, 6363, [CaII]7291, 7324, [FeII]7155) show the blueshift of ~ 1,500 - 2,000 km s-1. The [OI] doublet shows a doubly-peaked profile. The line luminosities can be interpreted as coming from a blob or jet containing only ~ 0.1 - 0.4 Msun, in which ~ 0.02 - 0.06 Msun is 56Ni synthesized at the explosion. To explain the blueshift, the blob should either be of unipolar moving at the center-of-mass velocity v ~ 2,000 - 5,000 km s-1, or suffer from self-absorption within the ejecta as seen in SN 1990I. In both interpretations, the low-mass blob component dominates the optical output both at the first peak (~ 20 days) and at the late phase (~ 300 days). The low luminosity at the late phase (the absolute R magnitude M_R ~ -10.2 mag at ~ 270 days) sets the upper limit for the mass of 56Ni < ~ 0.08 Msun, which is in contradiction to the value necessary to explain the second, main peak luminosity (M_R ~ -18.3 mag at ~ 40 days). Encountered by this difficulty in the 56Ni heating model, we suggest an alternative scenario in which the heating source is a newly born, strongly magnetized neutron star (a magnetar) with the surface magnetic field Bmag ~ 10^{14-15} gauss and the initial spin period P0 ~ 10 ms. Then, SN 2005bf could be a link between normal SNe Ib/c and an X-Ray Flash associated SN 2006aj, connected in terms of Bmag and/or P0.

Projectile fragmentation reactions and production of nuclei near the neutron drip-line

The reaction mechanism of projectile fragmentation at intermediate energies has been investigated observing the target dependence of the production cross sections of very neutron-rich nuclei. Measurement of longitudinal momentum distributions of projectile-like fragments within a wide range of fragment mass and its charge was performed using a hundred-MeV/n $^{40}$Ar beam incident on Be and Ta targets. By measurement of fragment momentum distribution, a parabolic mass dependence of momentum peak shift was observed in the results of both targets, and a phenomenon of light-fragment acceleration was found only in the Be-target data. The analysis of production cross sections revealed an obvious enhancement of the target dependence except target size effect when the neutron excess is increased. This result implies the breakdown of factorization (BOF) of production cross sections for very neutron-rich nuclei near the drip line.

Diversity of the Supernova - Gamma-Ray Burst Connection

The connection between the long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Type Ic Supernovae (SNe) has revealed interesting diversity. We review the following types of the GRB-SN connection. (1) GRB-SNe: The three SNe all explode with energies much larger than those of typical SNe, thus being called Hypernovae (HNe). They are massive enough for forming black holes. (2) Non-GRB HNe/SNe: Some HNe are not associated with GRBs. (3) XRF-SN: SN 2006aj associated with X-Ray Flash 060218 is dimmer than GRB-SNe and has very weak oxygen lines. Its progenitor mass is estimated to be small enough to form a neutron star rather than a black hole. (4) Non-SN GRB: Two nearby long GRBs were not associated SNe. Such ``dark HNe'' have been predicted in this talk (i.e., just before the discoveries) in order to explain the origin of C-rich (hyper) metal-poor stars. This would be an important confirmation of the Hypernova-First Star connection. We will show our attempt to explain the diversity in a unified manner with the jet-induced explosion model.

Hard X-ray Cu $2p$ Core-Level Photoemission of High-$T_c$ Cuprate Superconductors

We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ satellite features seem to be strongly enhanced compared to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. From x-ray photon energy dependent measurements, it is shown that the increased intensity in the satellite region is associated with Bi $4s$ core-level spectral intensity. The corrected $d^{n}$ satellite intensity is independent of the doping content or number of Cu-O layers. Our results suggest a correlation of the relative intensity of ZRS feature and hole-doping induced high binding energy spectral changes in the main peak with superconductivity.

Tensor interaction contributions to single-particle energies

We calculate the contribution of the nucleon-nucleon tensor interaction to single-particle energies with finite-range $ G $ matrix potentials and with zero-range Skyrme potentials. The Skx Skyrme parameters including the zero-range tensor terms with strengths calibrated to the finite-range results are refitted to nuclear properties. The fit allows the zero-range proton-neutron tensor interaction as calibrated to the finite-range potential results and that gives the observed change in the single-particle gap $ε$(h$_{11/2}$)-$ε$(g$_{7/2}$) going from $^{114}$Sn to $^{132}$Sn. However, the experimental $\ell$ dependence of the spin-orbit splittings in $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb is not well described when the tensor is added, due to a change in the radial dependence of the total spin-orbit potential. The gap shift and a good fit to the $\ell$-dependence can be recovered when the like-particle tensor interaction is opposite in sign to that required for the $ G $ matrix.

Pulse tube cryocooler with self-cancellation of cold stage vibration

We experimentally demonstrated a new method for reducing the vibration of the cold stage of a cryocooler. Comparing the RMS amplitude with the case of no phase shift of the driving gas pressure between the two pairs, the longitudinal vibration of the cold stage was reduced by 96.1% at 126 K by supplying gas pressure with 180 degrees of phase shift.

Cu-NMR study on the disordered quantum spin magnet with the Bose-glass ground state

Cu-NMR study has been performed on the disordered spin-gap system Tl1-xKxCuCl3 In the high-field H > HC=Δ/μ_B, where Δis the spin-gap, the hyperfine field becomes extremely inhomogeneous at low temperatures due to the field-induced magnetic order, indicating that the ordered spin state must be different from the pure TlCuCl3. In the low field H < HC, a saturating behavior in the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T1 was observed at low temperatures, indicating existence of the magnetic ground state proposed to be Bose-glass phase by Fisher.

Muon spin relaxation and rotation study on the solid solution of the two spin-gap systems (CH3)2CHNH3-CuCl3 and (CH3)2CHNH3-CuBr3

Muon-spin-rotation and relaxation studies have been performed on (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x$=0.85 and 0.95, which are solid solutions of the two isomorphic spin-gap systems (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ and (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuBr$_3$ with different spin gaps. The sample with $x$=0.85 showed a clear muon spin rotation under zero-field below $T_{\rm N}$=11.65K, indicating the existence of a long-range antiferromagnetic order. A critical exponent of the hyperfine field was obtained to be $β$=0.33, which agrees with 3D-Ising model. In the other sample with $x$=0.95, an anomalous enhancement of the muon spin relaxation was observed at very low temperatures indicating a critical slowing down due to a magnetic instability of the ground state.

Evolution of the $E(1/2^+_1)-E(3/2^+_1)$ energy spacing in odd-mass K, Cl and P isotopes for $N=20-28$

The energy of the first excited state in the neutron-rich N=28 nucleus 45Cl has been established via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following proton removal. This energy value completes the systematics of the E(1/2^+_1)-E(3/2^+_1) level spacing in odd-mass K, Cl and P isotopes for N=20-28. The results are discussed in the framework of shell-model calculations in the sd-fp model space. The contribution of the central, spin-orbit and tensor components is discussed from a calculation based on a proton single-hole spectrum from G-matrix and pi + rho meson exchange potentials. A composite model for the proton 0d_{3/2}-1s_{1/2} single-particle energy shift is presented.

Core-Collapse Very Massive Stars: Evolution, Explosion, and Nucleosynthesis of Population III 500 -- 1000 $M_{\odot}$ Stars

We calculate evolution, collapse, explosion, and nucleosynthesis of Population III very-massive stars with 500$M_{\odot}$ and 1000$M_{\odot}$. Presupernova evolution is calculated in spherical symmetry. Collapse and explosion are calculated by a two-dimensional code, based on the bipolar jet models. We compare the results of nucleosynthesis with the abundance patterns of intracluster matter, hot gases in M82, and extremely metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo. It was found that both 500$M_{\odot}$ and 1000$M_{\odot}$ models enter the region of pair-instability but continue to undergo core collapse. In the presupernova stage, silicon burning regions occupy a large fraction, more than 20% of the total mass. For moderately aspherical explosions, the patterns of nucleosynthesis match the observational data of both intracluster medium and M82. Our results suggest that explosions of Population III core-collapse very-massive stars contribute significantly to the chemical evolution of gases in clusters of galaxies. For Galactic halo stars, our [O/Fe] ratios are smaller than the observational abundances. However, our proposed scenario is naturally consistent with this outcome. The final black hole masses are $\sim 230M_{\odot}$ and $\sim 500M_{\odot}$ for the $500M_{\odot}$ and 1000$M_{\odot}$ models, respectively. This result may support the view that Population III very massive stars are responsible for the origin of intermediate mass black holes which were recently reported to be discovered.

New features of the maximal abelian projection

After fixing the Maximal Abelian gauge in SU(2) lattice gauge theory we decompose the nonabelian gauge field into the so called monopole field and the modified nonabelian field with monopoles removed. We then calculate respective static potentials and find that the potential due to the modified nonabelian field is nonconfining while, as is well known, the monopole field potential is linear. Furthermore, we show that the sum of these potentials approximates the nonabelian static potential with 5% or higher precision at all distances considered. We conclude that at large distances the monopole field potential describes the classical energy of the hadronic string while the modified nonabelian field potential describes the string fluctuations. Similar decomposition was observed to work for the adjoint static potential. A check was also made of the center projection in the direct center gauge. Two static potentials, determined by projected $Z_2$ and by modified nonabelian field without $Z_2$ component were calculated. It was found that their sum is a substantially worse approximation of the SU(2) static potential than that found in the monopole case. It is further demonstrated that similar decomposition can be made for the flux tube action/energy density.

Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid in a Quasi-One-Dimensional S=1 Antiferromagnet Observed by the Specific Heat

Specific heat experiments on single crystals of the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C_9H_24N_4)(NO_2)ClO_4, alias NTENP, have been performed in magnetic fields applied both parallel and perpendicular to the spin chains. We have found for the parallel field configuration that the magnetic specific heat (C_mag) is proportional to temperature (T) above a critical field H_c, at which the energy gap vanishes, in a temperature region above that of the long-range ordered state. The ratio C_mag/T increases as the magnetic field approaches H_c from above. The data are in good quantitative agreement with the prediction of the c=1 conformal field theory in conjunction with the velocity of the excitations calculated by a numerical diagonalization, providing a conclusive evidence for a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

Critical temperature in QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks

We present results obtained in QCD with two flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at finite temperature on $16^3 \times 8$ and $24^3 \times 10$ lattices. We determine the transition temperature in the range of quark masses $0.6<m_π/m_ρ<0.8$ at lattice spacing a$\approx$0.1 fm and extrapolate the transition temperature to the continuum and to the chiral limits. We also discuss the order of phase transition.

Large magneto-thermal effect and the spin-phonon coupling in a parent insulating cuprate Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4

The magnetic-field (H) dependence of the thermal conductivity κof Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4 is found to show a pronounced minimum for in-plane fields at low temperature, which is best attributed to the scattering of phonons by free spins that are seen by a Schottky-type specific heat and a Curie-Weiss susceptibility. Besides pointing to a strong spin-phonon coupling in cuprates, the present result demonstrates that the H-dependence of the phonon heat transport should not be naively neglected when discussing the κ(H) behavior of cuprates, since the Schottky anomaly is ubiquitously found in cuprates at any doping.

Sum Rules of the Multiple Giant Dipole States

Various sum rules for multiple giant dipole resonance states are derived. For the triple giant dipole resonance states, the energy-weighted sum of the transition strengths requires a model to be related to those of the single and double giant dipole resonance states. It is also shown that the non-diagonal matrix elements of the double commutator between the dipole operator and the nuclear Hamiltonian give useful identities for the excitation energy and transition strength of each excited state. Using those identities, the relationship between width of the single dipole state and those of the multiple ones is qualitatively discussed.

Boson-Fermion pairing in a Boson-Fermion environment

Propagation of a Boson-Fermion (B-F) pair in a B-F environment is considered. The possibility of formation of stable strongly correlated B-F pairs, embedded in the continuum, is pointed out. The new Fermi gas of correlated B-F pairs shows a strongly modified Fermi surface. The interaction between like particles is neglected in this exploratory study. Various physical situations where our new pairing mechanism could be of importance are invoked.
