Hall coefficient of La$_{1.88-y}$Y$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y=0, 0.04$) at low temperatures under high magnetic fields

The Hall coefficient in the low-temperature tetragonal phase and the mid-temperature orthorhombic phase of La$_{1.88-y}$Y$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y=0, 0.04$) single crystals is measured under high magnetic fields up to 9 T in order to investigate the detailed behavior of the transport properties at low temperatures in the stripe phase. When the superconductivity is suppressed by high magnetic fields, the Hall coefficient has negative values in low temperatures, and the temperature region of the negative values spreads as increasing magnetic fields. This result indicates that the Hall coefficient in the stripe phase around $x=0.12$ is a finite negative value, not zero.

Anatomy of the lattice magnetic monopoles

We study the Abelian and non-Abelian action densitynear the monopole in the maximal Abelian gauge of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find that the non-Abelian action density near the monopoles belonging to the percolating cluster decreases when we approach the monopole center. Our estimate of the monopole radius is R_mon ~ 0.04 fm.

Force measurements of a superconducting-film actuator for a cryogenic interferometric gravitational-wave detector

We measured forces applied by an actuator with a YBCO film at near 77 K for the Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational-wave Telescope (LCGT) project. An actuator consisting of both a YBCO film of 1.6 micrometers thickness and 0.81 square centimeters area and a solenoid coil exerted a force of up to 0.2 mN on a test mass. The presented actuator system can be used to displace the mirror of LCGT for fringe lock of the interferometer.

Random-phase approximation study of collective excitations in the Bose-Fermi mixed condensate of alkali-metal gases

We perform Random Phase Approximation (RPA) study of collective excitations in the bose-fermi mixed degenerate gas of Alkali-metal atoms at T=0. The calculation is done by diagonalization in a model space composed of particle-hole type excitations from the ground state, the latter being obtained from the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii and Thomas-Fermi equations. We investigate strength distributions for different combinations of bose and fermi multipole ($L$) operators with $L=0,1,2,3$. Transition densities and dynamical structure factors are calculated for collective excitations. Comparison with the sum rule prediction for the collective frequency is given. Time dependent behavior of the system after an external impulse is studied.

Lattice monopoles in hot SU(2) gluodynamics as blocked continuum defects

We propose to consider lattice monopoles in gluodynamics as continuum monopoles blocked to the lattice. In this approach the lattice is associated with a measuring device consisting of finite-sized detectors of monopoles (lattice cells). Thus a continuum monopole theory defines the dynamics of the lattice monopoles. We apply this idea to the static monopoles in high temperature gluodynamics. We show that our suggestion allows to describe the numerical data both for the density of the lattice monopoles and for the lattice monopole action in terms of a continuum Coulomb gas model.

Thermal Properties of Heavy Fermion Compound YbP

Low-temperature specific heat and its field-dependence up to 16 T was measured in a stoichiometric single crystal of YbP. A sharp peak was observed at {\it T}$_{\rm N}$ = 0.53 K in zero magnetic field. Application of external field seems to induce a new magnetic phase above 11 T. The field dependence of the transition temperature in the high-field phase is different from that of the low field phase. The linear coefficient of the electronic specific heat is estimated as 120 mJ/mole K$^{2}$ from low temperature specfic heat, suggesting heavy Fermion state in YbP.

Relativistic vs. Non-relativistic Nuclear Models

Both the relativistic and non-relativistic model explain very well low-energy nuclear phenomena, but in a physically different way from each other. There seems to be no low-energy phenomenon to answer which model is more reasonable. In order to explore a difference between two models, high momentum transfer phenomena are investigated. First it is shown that the neutron spin-orbit charge density in the relativistic model reproduces very well experimental data on elastic electron scattering which have not been explained in the non-relativistic model. Next it is predicted that the relativistic Coulomb sum value is strongly quenched, compared with the non-relativistic one. This quenching is owing to the anti-nucleon degrees of freedom, which make the nucleon size larger and equivalently the vector-meson mass smaller in nuclear medium. New experiment on the Coulomb sum values around the momentum transfer 1GeV is expected to distinguish the relativistic from the non-relativistic model.

Antiferroquadrupolar Order in the Magnetic Semiconductor TmTe

The physical properties of the antiferroquadrupolar state occurring in TmTe below TQ=1.8 K have been studied using neutron diffraction in applied magnetic fields. A field-induced antiferromagnetic component k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) is observed and, from its magnitude and direction for different orientations of H, an O(2,2) quadrupole order parameter is inferred. Measurements below TN ~= 0.5 K reveal that the magnetic structure is canted, in agreement with theoretical predictions for in-plane antiferromagnetism. Complex domain repopulation effects occur when the field is increased in the ordered phases, with discontinuities in the superstructure peak intensities above 4 T.

On the dynamics of color magnetic monopoles in full QCD

We present first results on the dynamics of monopoles in full QCD with N_f=2 flavors of dynamical quarks. Among the quantities being studied are the monopole density and the monopole screening length, the static potential as well as the profile of the color electric flux tube. Furthermore, we derive the low-energy effective monopole action.

Topics of monopole dynamics in gluodynamics

Three topics of monopole dynamics in gluodynamics are presented. 1)Gauge (in)dependence of the monopole effective action (S.Ito, T.W.Park, T.Suzuki): Four different abelian projections are studied. MA and Laplacian abelian gauges show almost the same renormalization flow and renormalized trajectory. 2)The quantized dual abelian Higgs model (DAH) derived from SU(2) gluodynamics and its vacuum structure (Y.Koma, E.-M.Ilgenfritz, T.Suzuki,M.I.Polikarpov): Monte-Carlo analysis of DAH is done. The quantum average of the dual field strength shows a flux tube profile similar to the color-electric field profile measured in SU(2) gluodynamics. 3)Lattice instanton action from 3D SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model (GG)$_3$ (T.Yazawa, T.Suzuki): (GG)$_3$ is studied on the lattice in the London limit. We determine an effective instanton action both in unitary and MA gauges. For some range of parameters, we obtain almost perfect actions which look the same in both gauges (gauge independence) and which reproduce well the string tension.

Casimir scaling in a dual superconducting scenario of confinement

The string tensions of flux tubes associated with static charges in various SU(3) representations are studied within the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory. The ratios of the string tensions between higher and fundamental representations, $d_{D} \equiv σ_{D}/σ_{F}$, are found to depend only on the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) parameter, $κ= m_χ/m_{B}$, the mass ratio between monopoles $m_χ$ and dual gauge bosons $m_B$. In the case of the Bogomol'nyi limit ($κ=1$), analytical values of $d_{D}$ are easily obtained by adopting the manifestly Weyl invariant formulation of the DGL theory, which are provided simply by the number of color-electric Dirac strings inside the flux tube. A numerical investigation of the ratio for various GL-parameter cases is also performed, which suggests that the Casimir scaling is obtained in the type-II parameter range within the interval $κ=5 \sim 9$ for various ratios $d_D$.

Weyl symmetric representation of hadronic flux tubes in the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory

Hadronic flux-tube solutions describing the mesonic and the baryonic states within the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory are investigated by using the dual lattice formulation in the Weyl-symmetric approach. The shape of the flux tubes is determined by placement of the color-electric Dirac-string singularity treated as a connected stack of quantized plaquettes in the dual lattice formulation. The Weyl symmetric profiles of the hadronic flux tubes are obtained by using the manifestly Weyl invariant representation of the dual gauge field.

Induced instability for boson-fermion mixed condensate of Alkali atoms due to attractive boson-fermion interaction

Instabilities for boson-fermion mixed condensates of trapped Alkali atoms due to the boson-fermion attractive interaction are studied using a variational method. Three regions are shown for their instabilities according to the boson-fermion interaction strength: stable, meta-stable and unstable ones. The stability condition is obtained analytically from the asymptotic expansion of the variational total energy. The life-time of metastable states is discussed for tunneling decay, and is estimated to be very long. It suggests that, except near the unstable border, meta-stable mixed condensate should be almost-stable against clusterizations. The critical border between meta-stable and unstable phases is calculated numerically and is shown to be consistent with the Mølmer scaling condition.

Sum Rule Approach to Collective Oscillations of Boson-Fermion Mixed Condensate of Alkali Atoms

The behavior of collective oscillations of a trapped boson-fermion mixed condensate is studied in the sum rule approach. Mixing angle of bosonic and fermionic multipole operators is introduced so that the mixing characters of the low-lying collective modes are studied as functions of the boson-fermion interaction strength. For an attractive boson-fermion interaction, the low-lying monopole mode becomes a coherent oscillation of bosons and fermions and shows a rapid decrease in the excitation energy towards the instability point of the ground state. In contrast, the low-lying quadrupole mode keeps a bosonic character over a wide range of the interaction strengths. For the dipole mode the boson-fermion in-phase oscillation remains to be the eigenmode under the external oscillator potential. For weak repulsive values of the boson-fermion interaction strengths we found that an average energy of the out-of-phase dipole mode stays lower than the in-phase oscillation. Physical origin of the behavior of the multipole modes against boson-fermion interaction strength is discussed in some detail.

Design, fabrication and measurement of the first rounded damped detuned accelerator structure (RDDS1)

As a joint effort in the JLC/NLC research program, we have developed a new type of damped detuned accelerator structure with optimized round-shaped cavities (RDDS). This paper discusses some important R&D aspects of the first structure in this series (RDDS1). The design aspects covered are the cell design with sub-MHz precision, HOM detuning, coupling and damping technique and wakefield simulation. The fabrication issues covered are ultra-precision cell machining with micron accuracy, assembly and diffusion bonding technologies to satisfactorily meet bookshelf, straightness and cell rotational alignment requirements. The measurements described are the RF properties of single cavities and complete accelerator section, as well as wakefields from the ASSET tests at SLAC. Finally, future improvements are also discussed.

Fabrication Process of Rounded Damped Detuned Structure

Following the successful design and fabrication of Damped Detuned Structures (DDS), the JLC/NLC linear collider project advanced to Rounded Damped Detuned Structures (RDDS) with curved cross section of the cavity shape for increased shunt impedance. Various advanced techniques for fabricating RDDS1 disks comparing to those for DDS were established to satisfy the dimension accuracy of +-1 micron over the entire surface made by ultra-precision turning. These disks were assembled with almost the same stacking and bonding jigs and processes as those of DDS3 assembly. In consequence, the assembly showed little disk-to-disk misalignment within 1 micron before and after the process. Though, it had 200 micron smooth bowing, which was subsequently corrected as DDS3, and flares at both ends.

Meeting Tight Frequency Requirement of Rounded Damped Detuned Structure

Following successful design and fabrication of damped detuned structures, the R&D for the accelerating structures of the NLC/JLC linear collider project proceeded to studies of Rounded Damped Detuned Structure with curved cross section of the cavity shape for increased shunt impedance. The important features of the structure are the accurately tuned accelerating mode frequency and the distribution of the first dipole modes smooth and close to the design distribution. These requirements were met based on the high-accuracy diamond turning with its capability to realize the periphery tolerance of two microns. The lowest dipole mode frequencies scattered by 0.6 MHz RMS. The error in the accelerating mode frequency averaged over a structure was 0.1 MHz by applying a feed-forward method.
