Beta decay of the exotic $T_z$ = -2 nuclei $^{48}$Fe, $^{52}$Ni and $^{56}$Zn

The results of a study of the beta decays of three proton-rich nuclei with $T_z=\text{-}2$, namely $^{48}$Fe, $^{52}$Ni and $^{56}$Zn, produced in an experiment carried out at GANIL, are reported. In all three cases we have extracted the half-lives and the total $β$-delayed proton emission branching ratios. We have measured the individual $β$-delayed protons and $β$-delayed $γ$ rays and the branching ratios of the corresponding levels. Decay schemes have been determined for the three nuclei, and new energy levels are identified in the daughter nuclei. Competition between $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays is observed in the de-excitation of the $T=2$ Isobaric Analogue States in all three cases. Absolute Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths have been determined. The mass excesses of the nuclei under study have been deduced. In addition, we discuss in detail the data analysis taking as a test case $^{56}$Zn, where the exotic $β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay has been observed.

Structure near $K^-$+$p$+$p$ threshold in the in-flight $^3$He$(K^-,Λp)n$ reaction

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $Λp$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $Λpn$ final state. The observed $Λp n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $Λp$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $χ^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $Γ_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

Absolute Energy Calibration of X-ray TESs with 0.04 eV Uncertainty at 6.4 keV in a Hadron-Beam Environment

A performance evaluation of superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) in the environment of a pion beam line at a particle accelerator is presented. Averaged across the 209 functioning sensors in the array, the achieved energy resolution is 5.2 eV FWHM at Co $K_α$ (6.9 keV) when the pion beam is off and 7.3 eV at a beam rate of 1.45 MHz. Absolute energy uncertainty of $\pm$0.04 eV is demonstrated for Fe $K_α$ (6.4 keV) with in-situ energy calibration obtained from other nearby known x-ray lines. To achieve this small uncertainty, it is essential to consider the non-Gaussian energy response of the TESs and thermal cross-talk pile-up effects due to charged-particle hits in the silicon substrate of the TES array.

Competition of $β$-delayed protons and $β$-delayed $γ$ rays in $^{56}$Zn and the exotic $β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay

Remarkable results have been published recently on the $β$ decay of $^{56}$Zn. In particular, the rare and exotic $β$-delayed $γ$-proton emission has been detected for the first time in the $fp$ shell. Here we focus the discussion on this exotic decay mode and on the observed competition between $β$-delayed protons and $β$-delayed $γ$ rays from the Isobaric Analogue State.

Dipole polarizability of 120Sn and nuclear energy density functionals

The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0°. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability α_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established α_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs). Models based on modern Skyrme interactions describe the data fairly well while most calculations based on relativistic Hamiltonians cannot.

Search for Nucleon and Dinucleon Decays with an Invisible Particle and a Charged Lepton in the Final State at the Super-Kamiokande Experiment

Search results for nucleon decays $p \rightarrow e^+X$, $p \rightarrow μ^+X$, $n \rightarrow νγ$ (where $X$ is an invisible, massless particle) as well as dinucleon decays $np \rightarrow e^+ν$, $np \rightarrow μ^+ν$ and $np \rightarrow τ^+ν$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment are presented. Using single-ring data from an exposure of 273.4 kton $\cdot$ years, a search for these decays yields a result consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of $τ_{p \rightarrow e^+X} > 7.9 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{p \rightarrow μ^+X} > 4.1 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{n \rightarrow νγ} > 5.5 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{np \rightarrow e^+ν} > 2.6 \times 10^{32}$ years, $τ_{np \rightarrow μ^+ν} > 2.2 \times 10^{32}$ years and $τ_{np \rightarrow τ^+ν} > 2.9 \times 10^{31}$ years at a $90 \% $ confidence level are obtained. Some of these searches are novel.

Direct mass measurements of Cd isotopes show strong shell gap at N=82

A $^{238}$U projectile beam was used to create cadmium isotopes via abrasion-fission at 410 MeV/u in a beryllium target at the entrance of the in-flight separator FRS at GSI. The fission fragments were separated with the FRS and injected into the isochronous storage ring ESR for mass measurements. The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) was performed under two different experimental conditions, with and without B$ρ$-tagging at the dispersive central focal plane of the FRS. In the experiment with B$ρ$-tagging the magnetic rigidity of the injected fragments was determined by an accuracy of $2\times 10^{-4}$. A new method of data analysis, using a correlation matrix for the combined data set from both experiments, has provided mass values for 25 different isotopes for the first time. The high selectivity and sensitivity of the experiment and analysis has given access even to rare isotopes detected with a few atoms per week. In this letter we present for the $^{129,130,131}$Cd isotopes mass values directly measured for the first time. The Cd results clearly show a very pronounced shell effect at $N=82$ which is in agreement with the conclusion from $γ$-ray spectroscopy of $^{130}$Cd and confirms the assumptions of modern shell-model calculations.

Search for dinucleon decay into pions at Super-Kamiokande

A search for dinucleon decay into pions with the Super-Kamiokande detector has been performed with an exposure of 282.1 kiloton-years. Dinucleon decay is a process that violates baryon number by two units. We present the first search for dinucleon decay to pions in a large water Cherenkov detector. The modes $^{16}$O$(pp) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$C$π^{+}π^{+}$, $^{16}$O$(pn) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$N$π^{+}π^{0}$, and $^{16}$O$(nn) \rightarrow$ $^{14}$O$π^{0}π^{0}$ are investigated. No significant excess in the Super-Kamiokande data has been found, so a lower limit on the lifetime of the process per oxygen nucleus is determined. These limits are: $τ_{pp\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{+}} > 7.22 \times 10^{31}$ years, $τ_{pn\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{0}} > 1.70 \times 10^{32}$ years, and $τ_{nn\rightarrowπ^{0}π^{0}} > 4.04 \times 10^{32}$ years. The lower limits on each mode are about two orders of magnitude better than previous limits from searches for dinucleon decay in iron.

Precise determination of $^{12}_Λ$C level structure by $γ$-ray spectroscopy

Level structure of the $^{12}_Λ$C hypernucleus was precisely determined by means of $γ$-ray spectroscopy. We identified four $γ$-ray transitions via the $^{12}$C$(π^{+},K^{+}γ)$ reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The spacing of the ground-state doublet $(2^{-}_{1},1^{-}_{1})$ was measured to be $161.5\pm0.3\text{(stat)}\pm0.3\text{(syst)}$\,keV from the direct $M1$ transition. Excitation energies of the $1^{-}_{2}$ and $1^{-}_{3}$ states were measured to be $2832\pm3\pm4$\,keV and $6050\pm8\pm7$\,keV, respectively. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of $Λ$ hypernuclei.

Measurement of very forward neutron energy spectra for 7 TeV proton--proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider forward (LHCf) experiment is designed to use the LHC to verify the hadronic-interaction models used in cosmic-ray physics. Forward baryon production is one of the crucial points to understand the development of cosmic-ray showers. We report the neutron-energy spectra for LHC $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV proton--proton collisions with the pseudo-rapidity $η$ ranging from 8.81 to 8.99, from 8.99 to 9.22, and from 10.76 to infinity. The measured energy spectra obtained from the two independent calorimeters of Arm1 and Arm2 show the same characteristic feature before unfolding the difference in the detector responses. We unfolded the measured spectra by using the multidimensional unfolding method based on Bayesian theory, and the unfolded spectra were compared with current hadronic-interaction models. The QGSJET II-03 model predicts a high neutron production rate at the highest pseudo-rapidity range similar to our results and the DPMJET 3.04 model describes our results well at the lower pseudo-rapidity ranges. However no model perfectly explains the experimental results in the whole pseudo-rapidity range. The experimental data indicate the most abundant neutron production rate relative to the photon production, which does not agree with predictions of the models.

Low-energy electric dipole response in 120Sn

The electric dipole strength in 120Sn has been extracted from proton inelastic scattering experiments at E_p = 295 MeV and at forward angles including 0 degree. Below neutron threshoild it differs from the results of a 120Sn(gamma,gamma') experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (gamma, gamma') reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1- states.

Modification of electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of hole-doped tungsten dichalcogenides

We present a study on the modification of the electronic structure and hole-doping effect for the layered dichalcogenide WSe_2 with a multi-valley band structure, where Ta is doped on the W site along with a partial substitution of Te for its lighter counterpart Se. By means of band-structure calculations and specific-heat measurements, the introduction of Te is theoretically and experimentally found to change the electronic states in WSe_2. While in WSe_2 the valence-band maximum is located at the Gamma point, the introduction of Te raises the bands at the K point with respect to the Gamma point. In addition, thermal-transport measurements reveal a smaller thermal conductivity at room temperature of W_1-xTa_xSe_1.6Te_0.4 than reported for W_1-xTa_xSe_2. However, when approaching 900 K, the thermal conductivities of both systems converge while the resistivity in W_1-xTa_xSe_1.6Te_0.4 is larger than in W_1-xTa_xSe_2, leading to comparable but slightly smaller values of the figure of merit in W_1-xTa_xSe_1.6Te_0.4.

Measurement of the strong interaction induced shift and width of the 1s state of kaonic deuterium at J-PARC

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

Competition between $β$-delayed proton and $β$-delayed $γ$ decay of the exotic $T_z$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn and fragmentation of the IAS

A very exotic decay mode at the proton drip-line, $β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay, has been observed in the $β$ decay of the $T_z$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn. Three $γ$-proton sequences have been observed following the $β$ decay. The fragmentation of the IAS in $^{56}$Cu has also been observed for the first time. The results were reported in a recent publication. At the time of publication the authors were puzzled by the competition between proton and $γ$ decays from the main component of the IAS. Here we outline a possible explanation based on the nuclear structure properties of the three nuclei involved, namely $^{56}$Zn, $^{56}$Cu and $^{55}$Ni, close to the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. From the fragmentation of the Fermi strength and the excitation energy of the two populated 0$^{+}$ states we could deduce the off-diagonal matrix element of the charge-dependent part of the Hamiltonian responsible for the mixing. These results are compared with the decay of $^{55}$Cu with one proton less than $^{56}$Zn. For completeness we summarise the results already published.

$β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay in $^{56}$Zn: analysis of the charged-particle spectrum

A study of the $β$ decay of the proton-rich $T_{z}$ = -2 nucleus $^{56}$Zn has been reported in a recent publication. A rare and exotic decay mode, $β$-delayed $γ$-proton decay, has been observed there for the first time in the $fp$ shell. Here we expand on some of the details of the data analysis, focussing on the charged particle spectrum.

Uniformity of fuel target implosion in Heavy Ion Fusion

In inertial confinement fusion the target implosion non-uniformity is introduced by a driver beams' illumination non-uniformity, a fuel target alignment error in a fusion reactor, the target fabrication defect, et al. For a steady operation of a fusion power plant the target implosion should be robust against the implosion non-uniformities. In this paper the requirement for the implosion uniformity is first discussed. The implosion uniformity should be less than a few percent. A study on the fuel hotspot dynamics is also presented and shows that the stagnating plasma fluid provides a significant enhancement of vorticity at the final stage of the fuel stagnation. Then non-uniformity mitigation mechanisms of the heavy ion beam (HIB) illumination are also briefly discussed in heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF). A density valley appears in the energy absorber, and the large-scale density valley also works as a radiation energy confinement layer, which contributes to a radiation energy smoothing. In HIF a wobbling heavy ion beam illumination was also introduced to realize a uniform implosion. In the wobbling HIBs illumination, the illumination non-uniformity oscillates in time and space on a HIF target. The oscillating-HIB energy deposition may contribute to the reduction of the HIBs' illumination non-uniformity by its smoothing effect on the HIB illumination non-uniformity and also by a growth mitigation effect on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Hybrid C-O-Ne white dwarfs as progenitors of type Ia supernovae: dependence on Urca process and mixing assumptions

When carbon is ignited off-centre in a CO core of a super-AGB star, its burning in a convective shell tends to propagate to the centre. Whether the C flame will actually be able to reach the centre depends on the efficiency of extra mixing beneath the C convective shell. Whereas thermohaline mixing is too inefficient to interfere with the C-flame propagation, convective boundary mixing can prevent the C burning from reaching the centre. As a result, a C-O-Ne white dwarf (WD) is formed, after the star has lost its envelope. Such a "hybrid" WD has a small CO core surrounded by a thick ONe zone. In our 1D stellar evolution computations, the hybrid WD is allowed to accrete C-rich material, as if it were in a close binary system and accreted H-rich material from its companion with a sufficiently high rate at which the accreted H would be processed into He under stationary conditions, assuming that He could then be transformed into C. When the mass of the accreting WD approaches the Chandrasekhar limit, we find a series of convective Urca shell flashes associated with high abundances of 23Na and 25Mg. They are followed by off-centre C ignition leading to convection that occupies almost the entire star. To model the Urca processes, we use the most recent well-resolved data for their reaction and neutrino-energy loss rates. Because of the emphasized uncertainty of the convective Urca process in our hybrid WD models of SN Ia progenitors, we consider a number of their potentially possible alternative instances for different mixing assumptions, all of which reach a phase of explosive C ignition, either off or in the centre. Our hybrid SN Ia progenitor models have much lower C to O abundance ratios at the moment of the explosive C ignition than their pure CO counterparts, which may explain the observed diversity of the SNe Ia.

Spectroscopy of Lambda-9Li by electroproduction

In the absence of accurate data on the free two-body hyperon-nucleon interaction, the spectra of hypernuclei can provide information on the details of the effective hyperon-nucleon interaction. Electroproduction of the hypernucleus Lambda-9Li has been studied for the first time with sub-MeV energy resolution in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 9Be target. In order to increase the counting rate and to provide unambiguous kaon identification, two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. The cross section to low-lying states of Lambda-9Li is concentrated within 3 MeV of the ground state and can be fitted with four peaks. The positions of the doublets agree with theory while a disagreement could exist with respect to the relative strengths of the peaks in the doublets. A Lambda separation energy of 8.36 +- 0.08 (stat.) +- 0.08 (syst.) MeV was measured, in agreement with an earlier experiment.
