Three- and four-nucleon absorption processes observed in the $K^-$-$^4$He reaction at rest

Correlations of back-to-back coincident $Λd$ and $Λt$ pairs from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on $^4$He had been investigated, thereby $Λd$ and $Λt$ branches of non-mesonic three- and four-nucleon absorption processes of antikaon at rest were identified as well-separable processes, respectively. The branching ratio of the three-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λd "n"$, is estimated to be $(0.9 \pm 0.1 (stat) \pm 0.2 (syst)) \times 10^{-3}$ from the normalized $Λd$ spectrum in a $Λd n$ final state, while the fraction of the four-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λt$, is obtained to be $(3.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)) \times 10^{-4}$ per stopped $K^-$.

Hole-trapping by Ni, Kondo effect and electronic phase diagram in non-superconducting Ni-substituted La2-xSrxCu1-yNiyO4

In order to investigate the electronic state in the normal state of high-Tc cuprates in a wide range of temperature and hole-concentration, specific-heat, electrical-resistivity, magnetization and muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) measurements have been performed in non-superconducting Ni-substituted La2-xSrxCu1-yNiyO4 where the superconductivity is suppressed through the partial substitution of Ni for Cu without disturbing the Cu-spin correlation in the CuO2 plane so much. In the underdoped regime, it has been found that there exist both weakly localized holes around Ni and itinerant holes at high temperatures. With decreasing temperature, all holes tend to be localized, followed by the occurrence of variable-range hopping conduction at low temperatures. Finally, in the ground state, it has been found that each Ni2+ ion traps a hole strongly and that a magnetically ordered state appears. In the overdoped regime, on the other hand, it has been found that a Kondo-like state is formed around each Ni2+ spin at low temperatures. In conclusion, the ground state of non-superconducting La2-xSrxCu1-yNiyO4 changes upon hole doping from a magnetically ordered state with the strong hole-trapping by Ni2+ to a metallic state with Kondo-like behavior due to Ni2+ spins, and the quantum phase transition is crossover-like due to the phase separation into short-range magnetically ordered and metallic regions.

Probing the finite temperature phase transition with Nf=2 nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions

The critical temperature and the nature of the QCD finite temperature phase transition are determined for Nf=2 dynamical flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The calculations are performed on large lattices with temporal extents Nt=12, 10 and 8, and lattice spacings down to a = 0.075 fm. We find the deconfinement and chiral phasetransitions to take place at the same temperature. Our results are in broad agreement with a second order phase transition in the chiral limit. The critical temperature at the physical quark mass is found to be Tc = 174(3)(6) MeV.

Muon-spin-relaxation study of the Cu-spin dynamics in electron-doped high-T_c_ superconductor Pr_0.86_LaCe_0.14_Cu_1-y_Zn_y_O_4_

Muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) measurements have been performed for the partially Zn-substituted electron-doped high-T_c_ superconductor Pr_0.86_LaCe_0.14_Cu_1-y_Zn_y_O_4+alpha-delta_ with y=0-0.05 and the reduced oxygen content delta=0-0.09, in order to investigate nonmagnetic Zn-impurity effects on the Cu-spin dynamics. For all the measured samples with delta=0.01-0.09, it has been found that a fast depolarization of muon spins is observed below 100 K due to the effect of Pr^3+^ moments and that the muSR time spectrum in the long-time region above 5 mu-sec increases with decreasing temperature at low temperatures below 30 K possibly due to slowing down of the Cu-spin fluctuations assisted by Pr^3+^ moments. No Zn-induced slowing down of the Cu-spin fluctuations has been observed for moderately oxygen-reduced samples with delta=0.04-0.09, which is very different from the muSR results of La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_Zn_y_O_4_. The possible reason may be that there are no dynamical stripe correlations of spins and electrons in the electron-doped high-T_c_ cuprates or that the effect of Pr^3+^ moments on the muSR spectra is stronger than that of a small amount of Zn impurities.

Kiloparsec-scale star formation law in M81 and M101 based on AKARI far-infrared observations

We assess the relationships between the surface densities of the gas and star formation rate (SFR) within spiral arms of the nearby late-type spiral galaxies M81 and M101. By analyzing these relationships locally, we derive empirically a kiloparsec scale Kennicutt-Schmidt Law. Both M81 and M101 were observed with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) aboard AKARI in four far-infrared bands at 65, 90, 140, and 160 um. The spectral energy distributions of the whole galaxies show the presence of the cold dust component (Tc~20 K) in addition to the warm dust component (Tw~60 K). We deconvolved the cold and warm dust emission components spatially by making the best use of the multi-band photometric capability of the FIS. The cold and warm dust components show power-law correlations in various regions, which can be converted into the gas mass and the SFR, respectively. We find a power-law correlation between the gas and SFR surface densities with significant differences in the power law index N between giant HII regions (N=1.0) and spiral arms (N=2.2) in M101. The power-law index for spiral arms in M81 is similar (N=1.9) to that of spiral arms in M101. Conclusions: The power-law index is not always constant within a galaxy. The difference in the power-law index can be attributed to the difference in the star formation processes on a kiloparsec scale. N~2 seen in the spiral arms in M81 and M101 supports the scenario of star formation triggered by cloud-cloud collisions enhanced by spiral density wave, while N~1 derived in giant HII regions in M101 suggests the star formation induced by the Parker instability triggered by high velocity HI gas infall. The present method can be applied to a large galaxy sample for which the AKARI All Sky Survey provides the same 4 far-infrared band data.

Temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in silicon by Hanle-type spin precession

The Hanle-type spin precession method was carried out associated with non-local magnetoresistance measurement using a highly doped (5\times10^19) silicon channel. The spin diffusion length obtained by the Hanle-method is in good agreement with that by the gap dependence of non-local signals. We have evaluated the interface and bulk channel effects separately, and it was demonstrated that the major source of temperature dependence of non-local signals originates from the spin polarization reduction at interface between the tunnel barrier and silicon.

Large-scale distributions of mid- and far-infrared emission from the center to the halo of M82 revealed with AKARI

The edge-on starburst galaxy M82 exhibits complicated distributions of gaseous materials in its halo, which include ionized superwinds driven by nuclear starbursts, neutral materials entrained by the superwinds, and large-scale neutral streamers probably caused by a past tidal interaction with M81. We investigate detailed distributions of dust grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) around M82 to understand their interplay with the gaseous components. We performed mid- (MIR) and far-infrared (FIR) observations of M82 with the Infrared Camera and Far-Infrared Surveyor on board AKARI. We obtain new MIR and FIR images of M82, which reveal both faint extended emission in the halo and very bright emission in the center with signal dynamic ranges as large as five and three orders of magnitude for the MIR and FIR, respectively. We detect MIR and FIR emission in the regions far away from the disk of the galaxy, reflecting the presence of dust and PAHs in the halo of M82. We find that the dust and PAHs are contained in both ionized and neutral gas components, implying that they have been expelled into the halo of M82 by both starbursts and galaxy interaction. In particular, we obtain a tight correlation between the PAH and H$α$ emission, which provides evidence that the PAHs are well mixed in the ionized superwind gas and outflowing from the disk.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 16N_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experimental study of the 16O(e,e'K^+)16N_Lambda reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K^+)Lambda,Sigma_0 exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV was obtained for 16N_Lambda with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus 16O_Lambda. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} hole states of the 15N core nucleus.

Properties of Type II Plateau Supernova SNLS-04D2dc: Multicolor Light Curves of Shock Breakout and Plateau

Shock breakout is the brightest radiative phenomenon in a Type II supernova (SN). Although it was predicted to be bright, the direct observation is difficult due to the short duration and X-ray/ultraviolet-peaked spectra. First entire observations of the shock breakouts of Type II Plateau SNe (SNe IIP) were reported in 2008 by ultraviolet and optical observations by the {\it GALEX} satellite and supernova legacy survey (SNLS), named SNLS-04D2dc and SNLS-06D1jd. We present multicolor light curves of a SN IIP, including the shock breakout and plateau, calculated with a multigroup radiation hydrodynamical code {\sc STELLA} and an evolutionary progenitor model. The synthetic multicolor light curves reproduce well the observations of SNLS-04D2dc. This is the first study to reproduce the ultraviolet light curve of the shock breakout and the optical light curve of the plateau consistently. We conclude that SNLS-04D2dc is the explosion with a canonical explosion energy $1.2\times10^{51}$ ergs and that its progenitor is a star with a zero-age main-sequence mass $20M_\odot$ and a presupernova radius $800R_\odot$. The model demonstrates that the peak apparent $B$-band magnitude of the shock breakout would be $m_{\rm B}\sim26.4$ mag if a SN being identical to SNLS-04D2dc occurs at a redshift $z=1$, which can be reached by 8m-class telescopes. The result evidences that the shock breakout has a great potential to detect SNe IIP at $z\gsim1$.

Gauge invariance of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles

The mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is studied in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of the Abelian fields and monopoles extracted from non-Abelian link variables without adopting gauge fixing. Firstly, the static quark-antiquark potential and force are computed with the Abelian and monopole Polyakov loop correlators, and the resulting string tensions are found to be identical to the non-Abelian string tension. These potentials also show the scaling behavior with respect to the change of lattice spacing. Secondly, the profile of the color-electric field between a quark and an antiquark is investigated with the Abelian and monopole Wilson loops. The color-electric field is squeezed into a flux tube due to monopole supercurrent with the same Abelian color direction. The parameters corresponding to the penetration and coherence lengths show the scaling behavior, and the ratio of these lengths, i.e, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, indicates that the vacuum type is near the border of the type1 and type2 (dual) superconductor. These results are summarized that the Abelian fundamental charge defined in an arbitrary color direction is confined inside a hadronic state by the dual Meissner effect. As the color-neutral state in any Abelian color direction corresponds to the physical color-singlet state, this effect explains non-Abelian color confinement and supports the existence of a gauge-invariant mechanism of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles.

CANGAROO-III search for TeV Gamma-rays from two clusters of galaxies

Because accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies may accelerate particles to high energies, clusters are candidate sites for the origin of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-rays. A prediction was presented for gamma-ray emission from a cluster of galaxies at a detectable level with the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-ray emission was produced via inverse Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by electron-positron pairs generated by collisions of UHE cosmic rays in the cluster. We observed two clusters of galaxies, Abell 3667 and Abell 4038, searching for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system in 2006. The analysis showed no significant excess around these clusters, yielding upper limits on the gamma-ray emission. From a comparison of the upper limit for the north-west radio relic region of Abell 3667 with a model prediction, we derive a lower limit for the magnetic field of the region of ~0.1 micro G. This shows the potential of gamma-ray observations in studies of the cluster environment. We also discuss the flux upper limit from cluster center regions using a model of gamma-ray emission from neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of cosmic-ray protons with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The derived upper limit of the cosmic-ray energy density within this framework is an order of magnitude higher than that of our Galaxy.

CANGAROO-III Observation of TeV Gamma Rays from the vicinity of PSR B1 706-44

Observation by the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic system of the Imaging Cherenkov Telescope has detected extended emission of TeV gamma rays in the vicinity of the pulsar PSR B1706$-$44. The strength of the signal observed as gamma-ray-like events varies when we apply different ways of emulating background events. The reason for such uncertainties is argued in relevance to gamma-rays embedded in the "off-source data", that is, unknown sources and diffuse emission in the Galactic plane, namely, the existence of a complex structure of TeV gamma-ray emission around PSR B1706$-$44.

AKARI Detection of Far-Infrared Dust Emission in the Halo of NGC253

We present new far-infrared (FIR) images of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC253 obtained with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard AKARI at wavelengths of 90 um and 140 um. We have clearly detected FIR dust emission extended in the halo of the galaxy; there are two filamentary emission structures extending from the galactic disk up to 9 kpc in the northern and 6 kpc in the northwestern direction. From its spatial coincidence with the X-ray plasma outflow, the extended FIR emission is very likely to represent outflowing dust entrained by superwinds. The ratios of surface brightness at 90 um to that at 140 um suggest that the temperatures of the dust in the halo are getting higher in the regions far from the disk, implying that there exist extra dust heating sources in the halo of the galaxy.

Silicon surface with giant spin-splitting

We demonstrate the induction of a giant Rashba-type spin-splitting on a semiconducting substrate by means of a Bi trimer adlayer on a Si(111) wafer. The in-plane inversion symmetry is broken so that the in-plane potential gradient induces a giant spin-splitting with a Rashba energy of about 140 meV, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than what has previously been reported for any semiconductor heterostructure. The separation of the electronic states is larger than their lifetime broadening, which has been directly observed with angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are confirmed by relativistic first-principles calculations. We envision important implications for basic phenomena as well as for the semiconductor based technology.

$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR Studies of Triplet Localization in the Quantum Spin System NH$_4$CuCl$_3$

$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments were performed to investigate triplet localization in the $S=1/2$ dimer compound NH$_4$CuCl$_3$, which shows magnetization plateaus at one-quarter and three-quarters of the saturation magnetization. In $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, signal from only the singlet Cu site was observed, because that from the triplet Cu site was invisible due to the strong spin fluctuation of onsite 3$d$-spins. We found that the temperature dependence of the shift of $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR spectra at the singlet Cu site deviated from that of macroscopic magnetization below T=6 K. This deviation is interpreted as the triplet localization in this system. From the $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments at the 1/4-plateau phase, we found the two different temperature dependences of Cl-shift, namely the temperature dependence of one deviates below T=6 K from that of the macroscopic magnetization as observed in the $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, whereas the other corresponds well with that of the macroscopic magnetization in the entire experimental temperature region. We interpreted these dependences as reflecting the transferred hyperfine field at the Cl site located at a singlet site and at a triplet site, respectively. This result also indicates that the triplets are localized at low temperatures. $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments performed at high magnetic fields between the one-quarter and three-quarters magnetization plateaus have revealed that the two differently oriented dimers in the unit cell are equally occupied by triplets, the fact of which limits the theoretical model on the periodic structure of the localized triplets.

$^1$H-NMR Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rate of IPACu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x=0$ and 0.35

The spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ of $^1$H-NMR has been measured in (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$Cu(Cl$_x$Br$_{1-x}$)$_3$ with $x=0$ and 0.35, in order to investigate the microscopic magnetism of systems. Previous macroscopic magnetization and specific heat measurements suggested that these two exist in a singlet-dimer phase. The temperature dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ in an $x=0$ system decreased exponentially toward zero, indicating microscopic evidence of the gapped singlet ground state, which is consistent with the macroscopic experiments. At the same time, in the $x=0.35$ system, $T_1^{-1}$ showed a sharp peak structure at around 7.5 K though no splitting of $^1$H-NMR spectra indicative of the magnetic ordering was observed. We discuss the observed sharp peak structure in the $x=0.35$ system with the soft mode toward the exotic magnetic ground state suggested by the recent $μ$SR experiments.

\muSR-dtected Soft mode toward a Possible Phase Transition in disordered spin gap system (CH3)2CHNH3-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3

Measurements of macroscopic properties have indicated that the bond-disordered spin-gap system (CH3)2CHNH3-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 is gapless when x is between 0.44 and 0.87. Using muon spin relaxation to investigate microscopic properties of sample with x=0.35, we observed a dynamical spin fluctuation, whose characteristic frequency decreases with decreasing temperature, indicating a magnetic ground state.

Neutrino-Nucleus Reaction Cross Sections for Light Element Synthesis in Supernova Explosions

The neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections of 4He and 12C are evaluated using new shell model Hamiltonians. Branching ratios of various decay channels are calculated to evaluate the yields of Li, Be, and B produced through the nu-process in supernova explosions. The new cross sections enhance the yields of 7Li and 11B produced during the supernova explosion of a 16.2 M_odot star model compared to the case using the conventional cross sections by about 10%. On the other hand, the yield of 10B decreases by a factor of two. The yields of 6Li, 9Be, and the radioactive nucleus 10Be are found at a level of 10^{-11} M_odot. The temperature of nu_{mu,tau}- and bar{nu}_{mu,tau}-neutrinos inferred from the supernova contribution of 11B in Galactic chemical evolution models is constrained to the 4.3-6.5 MeV range. The increase in the 7Li and 11B yields due to neutrino oscillations is demonstrated with the new cross sections.
