Present-day scaling relations of submm galaxies: origin of spheroidal sytems

We analyse the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 23 submm galaxies and 3 ISO-detected EROs, all of which have the spectroscopic redshifts, by using an evolutionary SED model of starbursts. This SED model allows us to investigate intrinsic properties of starbursts, such as the starburst age and the mean stellar metallicity, as it takes into account the chemical evolution. Also, the intrinsic size of the starburst region is estimated from observed SEDs. Using this SED model, we predict colour, magnitude, and size of present-day descendants of submm galaxies, and derive scaling relations, such as the present-day colour-magnitude and size-magnitude relations. We argue that submm galaxies are the progenitors of present-day elliptical galaxies, provided that the initial mass function (IMF) of submm galaxies is slightly flatter than the Salpeter IMF. In this case, we find that 1) the mean present-day magnitude of submm galaxies is similar to that of L* elliptical galaxies, 2) the present-day colour-magnitude relation is consistent with that of elliptical galaxies, 3) the present-day size-magnitude relation of elliptical galaxies can be reproduced if massive submm galaxies consist of multiple starburst regions. We estimate the effect of feedback in submm galaxies as a function of starburst age. It is found that starburst regions in submm galaxies are likely to be self-regulated; i.e. the effect of feedback is nearly balanced with the self-gravity of starburst regions.

Magnetic properties and magnetostructural phase transitions in Ni2+xMn1-xGa shape memory alloys

A systematic study of magnetic properties of Ni2+xMn1-xGa (0 \le x \le 0.19) Heusler alloys undergoing structural martensite-austenite transformations while in ferromagnetic state has been performed. From measurements of spontaneous magnetization, Ms(T), jumps ΔM at structural phase transitions were determined. Virtual Curie temperatures of the martensite were estimated from the comparison of magnetization in martensitic and austenitic phases. Both saturation magnetic moments in ferromagnetic state and effective magnetic moments in paramagnetic state of Mn and Ni atoms were estimated and the influence of delocalization effects on magnetism in these alloys was discussed. The experimental results obtained show that the shift of martensitic transition temperature depends weakly on composition. The values of this shift are in good correspondence with Clapeyron-Clausius formalism taking into account the experimental data on latent heat at martensite-austenite transformations.

Influence of intermartensitic transitions on transport properties of Ni2.16Mn0.84Ga alloy

Magnetic, transport, and x-ray diffraction measurements of ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni$_{2.16}$Mn$_{0.84}$Ga revealed that this alloy undergoes an intermartensitic transition upon cooling, whereas no such a transition is observed upon subsequent heating. The difference in the modulation of the martensite forming upon cooling from the high-temperature austenitic state [5-layered (5M) martensite], and the martensite forming upon the intermartensitic transition [7-layered (7M) martensite] strongly affects the magnetic and transport properties of the alloy and results in a large thermal hysteresis of the resistivity $ρ$ and magnetization $M$. The intermartensitic transition has an especially marked influence on the transport properties, as is evident from a large difference in the resistivity of the 5M and 7M martensite, $(ρ_{\mathrm{5M}} - ρ_{\mathrm{7M}})/ρ_{\mathrm{5M}} \approx 15%$, which is larger than the jump of resistivity at the martensitic transition from the cubic austenitic phase to the monoclinic 5M martensitic phase. We assume that this significant difference in $ρ$ between the martensitic phases is accounted for by nesting features of the Fermi surface. It is also suggested that the nesting hypothesis can explain the uncommon behavior of the resistivity at the martensitic transition, observed in stoichiometric and near-stoichiometric Ni-Mn-Ga alloys.

Influence of Fe and Co on Phase Transitions in Ni-Mn-Ga Alloys

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic measurements were performed to study the influence of ferromagnetic 3-d transition elements Fe and Co on structural and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni2MnGa. Addition of Fe or Co on the Ni sites decreases the temperature of martensitic phase transition Tm, whereas addition of Co on the Mn sites results in a considerable increase of Tm. Magnetic measurement revealed that Curie temperature TC increases upon substitution of Fe or Co for Ni. This observation is of importance for design of high temperature ferromagnetic shape memory alloys.

Magnetocaloric effect and magnetization in a Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloy in the vicinity of magnetostructural transition

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a Ni2.19Mn0.81Ga alloy with coupled magnetic and structural (martensitic) phase transitions were studied experimentally and theoretically. The magnetocaloric effect was measured by a direct method in magnetic fields 0-26 kOe at temperatures close to the magnetostructural transition temperature. For theoretical description of the alloy properties near the magnetostructural transition a statistical model is suggested, that takes into account the coexistence of martensite and austenite domains in the vicinity of martensite transformation point.

Shape memory ferromagnets

In ferromagnetic alloys with shape memory large reversible strains can be obtained by rearranging the martensitic domain structure by a magnetic field. Magnetization through displacement of domain walls is possible in the presence of high magnetocrystalline anisotropy, when martensitic structure rearrangement is energetically favorable compared to the reorientation of magnetic moments. In ferromagnetic Heusler alloys Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga the Curie temperature exceeds the martensitic transformation temperature. The fact that these two temperatures are close to room temperature offers the possibility of magnetically controlling the shape and size of ferromagnets in the martensitic state. In Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga single crystals, a reversible strain of $\sim 6$% is obtained in fields of $\sim 1$ T.

Factorization, reduction and embedding in integrable cellular automata

Factorized dynamics in soliton cellular automata with quantum group symmetry is identified with a motion of particles and anti-particles exhibiting pair creation and annihilation. An embedding scheme is presented showing that the D^{(1)}_n-automaton contains, as certain subsectors, the box-ball systems and all the other automata associated with the crystal bases of non-exceptional affine Lie algebras. The results extend the earlier ones to higher representations by a certain reduction and to a wider class of boundary conditions.

An efficient control of Curie temperature $T_C$ in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys

We have studied the influence of alloying with a fourth element on the temperature of ferromagnetic ordering $T_C$ in Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloys. It is found that $T_C$ increases or decreases, depending on the substitution. The increase of $T_C$ is observed when Ni is substituted by either Fe or Co. On the contrary, the substitution of Mn for V or Ga for In strongly reduces $T_C$.

Detection of weak-order phase transitions in ferromagnets by ac resistometry

It is shown that ac resistometry can serve as an effective tool for the detection of phase transitions, such as spin reorientation or premartensitic phase transitions, which generally are not disclosed by dc resistivity measurement. Measurement of temperature dependence of impedance, $Z(T)$, allows one to unmask the anomaly, corresponding to a weak-order phase transition. The appearance of such an anomaly is accounted for by a change in the effective permeability $μ$ of a sample upon the phase transition. Moreover, frequency dependence of $μ$ makes it possible to use the frequency of the applied ac current as an adjusting parameter in order to make this anomaly more pronounced. The applicability of this method is tested for the rare earth Gd and Heusler alloy Ni$_2$MnGa.

Two-way shape memory effect and mechanical properties of Pulse Discharge Sintered Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga

Mechanical and shape memory properties of a polycrystalline Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga alloy prepared by a PDS (Pulse Discharge Sintering) method were investigated. It was found that the material demonstrates the two-way shape memory effect after a loading - unloading cycle performed in the martensitic state, i. e. essentially without special training. The samples exhibiting the two-way shape memory effect show a significant enhancement in the magnitude of magnetic-field-induced strain.

Training of the Ni-Mn-Fe-Ga ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys by cycling in a high magnetic field

The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of Ni-Mn-Ga polycrystals deformation are investigated. Ingots were prepared by arc-melting in argon atmosphere and further annealing. A training procedure (cycling across the martensitic transition point) for the two-way shape-memory effect was performed with Ni$_{2.16}$Fe$_{0.04}$Mn$_{0.80}$Ga samples. Changes in sample deformations were noticed with changing the magnetic field at a constant temperature. The first cycle deformation increment as compared with the initial value (in the austenitic state at zero field) in the course of the martensitic transition was 0.29%, and 0.41% and 0.48% for the second and third cycles, respectively.

The magnetic field influence on magnetostructural phase transition in Ni2.19Mn0.81Ga

Magnetic properties of a polycrystalline alloy Ni$_{2.19}$Mn$_{0.81}$Ga, which undergoes a first-order magnetostructural phase transition from cubic paramagnetic to tetragonal ferromagnetic phase, are studied. Hysteretic behavior of isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ has been observed in a temperature interval of the magnetostructural transition in magnetic fields from 20 to 100 kOe. Temperature dependencies of magnetization $M$, measured in magnetic fields $H = 400$ and 60 kOe, indicate that the temperature of the magnetostructural transition increases with increasing magnetic field.

Entropy change at the martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}Ga

The entropy change $ΔS$ between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga ($x = 0 - 0.20$) alloys was studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that $ΔS$ in the Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys increases with the Ni excess $x$. The increase of $ΔS$ is presumably accounted for by an increase of magnetic contribution to the entropy change. It is suggested that the change in modulation of the martensitic phase of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga results in discontinuity of the composition dependence of $ΔS$.

ASTRO-F - Super IRAS - The All Sky Infra-Red Survey

We review the next generation Japanese infrared space mission, ASTRO-F. ASTRO-F will be the first survey of the entire sky at infrared wavelengths since the IRAS mission almost 20 years ago. ASTRO-F will survey the entire sky in 4 far-infrared bands from 50-200microns and 2 mid-infrared bands at 9 and 20microns to sensitivities of 10-1000 times deeper than the IRAS satellite at angular resolutions of 25-45arcsec (c.f. IRAS 2-5arcmins). ASTRO-F can be considered a SUPER-IRAS. Using the galaxy evolution model of Pearson (2001) we produce expected numbers of sources under 3 different cosmological world models. We predict that ASTRO-F will detect of the order of 10's millions of sources in the far-infrared wavelength bands, most of which will be dusty LIG/ULIGs of which as many as half will lie at redshifts greater than unity. We produce number-redshift distributions, flux-redshift and colour-colour diagrams for the survey and discuss various segregation and photometric redshift techniques. Furthermore, we investigate the large scale structure scales that will be accessed by ASTRO-F, discovering that ASTRO-F and SIRTF-SWIRE probe both different scales and redshift domains and concluding that the 2 missions will supplement rather than supplant one another.

Magnetic properties of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Heusler alloys with a coupled magnetostructural transition

Polycrystalline Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Heusler alloys with a coupled magnetostructural transition are studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic and resistivity measurements. Coupling of the magnetic and structural subsystems results in unusual magnetic features of the alloy. These uncommon magnetic properties of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga are attributed to the first-order structural transition from a tetragonal ferromagnetic to a cubic paramagnetic phase.

Dilatometric study of Ni2+xMn1-xGa under magnetic field

A study of polycrystalline and single crystalline Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys by means of dilatometric and strain gage techniques shows that large strain can be induced in the temperature range of the martensitic transformation by application of an external magnetic field. The biggest strain induced by magnetic field was observed in the samples of chemical compositions where the structural and magnetic transitions couple, i.e. occur at the same temperature.
