Origin of multiple skyrmion phases in EuAl4

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction has been considered essential for skyrmion formation, however, the discovery of skyrmion lattices (SkLs) in nominally centrosymmetric materials where the DM interaction is forbidden, such as Eu(Ga$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_4$, has challenged this established view. Recent structural investigations of Eu(Ga$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_4$ have further complicated this issue by revealing that the charge-density wave breaks local symmetry, theoretically allowing DM interaction. This raises a fundamental question: are the complex magnetic phases driven by the DM interaction or by alternative mechanisms? Here, using soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we determine the three-dimensional bulk electronic structure of Eu(Ga$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_4$, and elucidate the electronic origins of its rich magnetic orders. We directly observe an x-dependent Lifshitz transition leading to the emergence of a Fermi-surface pocket. Importantly, multiple nesting vectors derived from this pocket match the symmetries and periodicities of the multiple SkLs. Moreover, these nesting vectors can also account for other magnetic orders, such as the zero-field helical magnetism, suggesting a common electronic origin of the complex magnetic phases. These findings suggest that competing nesting-induced Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions and their engineering can generate and control various SkLs and related topological spin textures.

Ring isomorphisms in norm between Banach algebras of continuous complex-valued functions

Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact Hausdorff spaces, and let $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$ denote the commutative Banach algebras of all continuous complex-valued functions on $X$ and $Y$, respectively. We study bijective maps $T$ from $C(X)$ onto $C(Y)$ which preserve the ring structure in the norm in the following sense: \[ \|T(f+g)\|=\|T(f)+T(g)\|,\quad \|T(fg)\|=\|T(f)T(g)\| \qquad(f,g\in C(X)). \] Our main objective is to clarify whether such maps must necessarily be induced by homeomorphisms between the underlying spaces. Under the additional assumption that $T(\overline{f})=\overline{T(f)}$ for $f\in C(X)$, we prove that $T$ is a real-linear isometry. As a consequence, we obtain a concrete representation of such maps as weighted composition operators.

Spin-degenerate bulk bands and topological surface states associated with Dirac nodal lines in RuO2

Altermagnets are a novel platform to realize exotic electromagnetic properties distinct from those of conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. We report results of micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on RuO2, in which its altermagnetic nature has been under fierce debate in connection with crystal-orientation-dependent spintronic functionalities. By elucidating the band structure of the (100), (110) and (101) surfaces of a bulk single crystal using micro-ARPES, we found that, irrespective of the surface orientation, the experimental band structures show a good agreement with the bulk-band calculations for the nonmagnetic phase, but display a severe disagreement with those for the antiferromagnetic phase. Moreover, spin-resolved ARPES signifies a negligible spin polarization in the bulk bands, suggesting the absence of antiferromagnetism and altermagnetic spin splitting. In addition, we identified a nearly flat surface band and a dispersive one near the Fermi level at the (100)/(110) and (101) surfaces, respectively. Our first-principles calculations and analysis of Berry phase attribute these states to the topological surface bands emerging from the bulk Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi level. Our results indicate that such topological surface/interface states must be considered to understand the spintronic functionalities of RuO2, and may provide new insights into its catalytic characteristics.

Measurement of $Λ$ Polarization in the $π^{-}p \to K^{0} Λ$ Reaction at $p_{π^{-}}=1.33$ GeV/$c$ toward a New $Λp$ Scattering Experiment

This paper presents high-precision experimental data of the polarization of the $Λ$ hyperon in the $π^{-}p \to K^{0} Λ$ reaction, measured in the angular range $0.6<\cos θ^{CM}_{K0}<1.0$ with a fine bin width of $d\cos θ^{CM}_{K0}=0.05$. The data were obtained from the J-PARC E40 experiment at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. The observed average polarization of $Λ$ in the range $0.60<\cos θ^{CM}_{K0}<0.85$ was $0.932 \pm 0.058 \,(\text{stat}) \pm 0.028 \,(\text{syst})$, demonstrating the successful extraction of precise polarization observables. This result provides essential experimental input for partial wave analysis (PWA) of dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) models, which aim to uncover the underlying mechanisms of $N^{*}$ resonances that emerge in intermediate states of $πN$ and $γN$ interactions. Besides, it indicates the feasibility of a strongly polarized $Λ$ beam suitable for future $Λp$ scattering experiments (e.g., J-PARC E86).

Photon radiation calorimetry for anomalous heat generation in NiCu multilayer thin film during hydrogen gas desorption

In order to investigate the anomalous heat effect (AHE) in NiCu multilayer thin film, photon radiation calorimetry has been developed. Three types of photon detectors are employed to cover a wide range of wavelengths from 0.3 um to 5.5 um, i.e., photon energies from 0.2 to 1.8 eV. In the present work, the usefullness of the calorimetry is demonstrated for excess heat measurements with samples of Ni pure, NiCu composite layers, and Cu layer deposited on the Ni substrate. Direct comparisons of photon radiation spectra with and without H2 easily showed sample-specific differences in excess heat power. The samples of NiCu composite layer produced larger excess heat. By incorporating the measured radiant power into a heat flow model, the excess heat was deduced to be 4 - 6 W. The energy generated in 80 hours reached to 460 +/- 120 kJ: the generated energy per hydrogen was at least 410 +/- 108 keV/H atom. This is definitely not a chemical reaction, but producing energy at the level of nuclear reactions.

Few-electron highly charged muonic Ar atoms verified by electronic $K$ x rays

Electronic $K$ x rays emitted by muonic Ar atoms in the gas phase were observed using a superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeter. The high-precision energy spectra provided a clear signature of the presence of muonic atoms accompanied by a few electrons, which have never been observed before. One-, two-, and three-electron bound, i.e., H-like, He-like, and Li-like, muonic Ar atoms were identified from electronic $K$ x rays and hyper-satellite $K$ x rays. These $K$ x rays are emitted after the charge transfer process by the collisions with surrounding Ar atoms. With the aid of theoretical calculations, we confirmed that the peak positions are consistent with the x-ray energies from highly charged Cl ions, and the intensities reflecting deexcitation dynamics were successfully understood by taking into account the interaction between the muon and bound electrons.

Demonstration of nuclear gamma-ray polarimetry based on a multi-layer CdTe Compton Camera

To detect and track structural changes in atomic nuclei, the systematic study of nuclear levels with firm spin-parity assignments is important. While linear polarization measurements have been applied to determine the electromagnetic character of gamma-ray transitions, the applicable range is strongly limited due to the low efficiency of the detection system. The multi-layer Cadmium-Telluride (CdTe) Compton camera can be a state-of-the-art gamma-ray polarimeter for nuclear spectroscopy with the high position sensitivity and the detection efficiency. We demonstrated the capability to operate this detector as a reliable gamma-ray polarimeter by using polarized 847-keV gamma rays produced by the $^{56}\rm{Fe}({\it p},{\it p'}γ)$ reaction. By combining the experimental data and simulated calculations, the modulation curve for the gamma ray was successfully obtained. A remarkably high polarization sensitivity was achieved, compatible with a reasonable detection efficiency. Based on the obtained results, a possible future gamma-ray polarimetery is discussed.

Observation of Giant Band Splitting in Altermagnetic MnTe

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on hexagonal MnTe, a candidate for an altermagnet with a high critical temperature (TN=307 K). By utilizing photon-energy-tunable ARPES in combination with first-principles calculations, we found that the band structure in the antiferromagnetic phase exhibits a strongly anisotropic band-splitting associated with the time-reversal-symmetry breaking, providing the first direct experimental evidence for the altermagnetic band-splitting. The magnitude of the splitting reaches 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is much larger than the spin-orbit gap of ~0.3 eV along the GK high-symmetry cut. The present result paves the pathway toward realizing exotic physical properties associated with the altermagnetic spin-splitting.

Anti-deuteron beam study at J-PARC HEF K1.8 beam line

We performed a $\overline{d}$ beam study at the K1.8 beam line of J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. 1.8 GeV/$c$ $\overline{d}$ beam yield was measured to be 0.30 $\pm$ 0.04 counts/spill for 30 GeV 70 $\times 10^{12}$ protons/spill irradiated on a 66 mm thick of gold target with the vertical slit opening widths of 2.2 mm, 5 mm and 5 mm for intermediate focus (IFV), mass slit 1 (MS1) and 2 (MS2), respectively. Corresponding $\overline{p}$ beam yield is roughly estimated to be $\sim$ 0.3 Mcounts/spill for the same slit condition. Then, the $\overline{d}/\overline{p}$ production ratio at extraction angle of 6 degrees is estimated to be $\sim 10^{-6}$. This is the first time measurement of the $\overline{d}$ beam yield and $\overline{d}/\overline{p}$ production ratio at J-PARC. Further beam line tuning may increase the $\overline{d}$ beam yield.

Antiferromagnetic topological insulator with selectively gapped Dirac cones

Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.

LLRF upgrade status at the KEK Photon Factory 2.5 GeV ring

In 2023, we are replacing the LLRF system for the KEK-PF 2.5 GeV ring. The new system is composed of digital boards such as eRTM, AMC, and μRTM, based on the MTCA.4 standard. In our system, we adopted the non-IQ direct sampling method for RF detection. We set the sampling frequency at 8/13 (307.75 MHz) of the RF frequency, where the denominator (13) is the divisor of the harmonic number (312) of the storage ring. This allows us to detect the transient variation of the cavity voltage that is synchronized with the beam revolution. We also plan to compensate for the voltage variation by implementing a feedforward technique. These functions will be useful in a double RF system for KEK future synchrotron light source. Production and installation of the new system were complete and the new system is under commissioning. In this presentation, we introduce our new system and report the upgrade status.

Unusual band evolution and persistence of topological surface states in high-T_C magnetic topological insulator

Understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetism in ferromagnetic topological insulators (TIs) is a key to realize exotic time-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum phases. However, electronic states relevant to the ferromagnetism are highly controversial. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on (CrxSb1-x)2Te3 thin films, high-Curie-temperature (T_C) ferromagnetic TIs, spanning the non-doped (T_C=0 K) to highly-doped (T_C=192 K) region. We found that, upon Cr doping to Sb2Te3, the bulk valence-band valley exhibits filling-in behavior while retaining band inversion, leading to the formation of a nearly-flat band in high-T_C regime and evolution from a six-petal flower to a Star-of-David Fermi surface. Despite the weakening of spin-orbit coupling with Cr doping, the Dirac-cone state persists up to the highest-T_C sample, and shows a clear magnetic-gap opening below TC accompanied with an unexpected band shift, signifying its strong coupling with spontaneous ferromagnetism. The present result lays the foundation for understanding the interplay between band topology and ferromagnetism in TIs.

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

A novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuations of a GEM stack using a gating foil

We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the size of avalanche fluctuations of gaseous detectors using a gating device (gating foil) prepared for the time projection chamber in the international linear collider experiment (ILD-TPC). In addition to the gating function, the gating foil is capable of controlling the average fraction of drift electrons detected after gas amplification. The signal charge width and shape (skewness) for electron-ion pairs created by a pulsed UV laser as a function of the transmission rate of the gating foil can be used to determine the relative variance of gas gain for single electrons. We present the measurement principle and the result obtained using a stack of gas electron multipliers (GEMs) operated in a gas mixture of Ar-CF$_4$(3%)-isobutane(2%) at atmospheric pressure. Also discussed is the influence of the avalanche fluctuations on the spatial resolution of the ILD-TPC.

An Impartial Perspective for Superconducting Nb3Sn coated Copper RF Cavities for Future Accelerators

This Snowmass21 Contributed Paper encourages the Particle Physics community in fostering R&D in Superconducting Nb3Sn coated Copper RF Cavities instead of costly bulk Niobium. It describes the pressing need to devote effort in this direction, which would deliver higher gradient and higher temperature of operation and reduce the overall capital and operational costs of any future collider. It is unlikely that an ILC will be built in the next ten years with Nb as one of the main cost drivers of SRFs. This paper provides strong arguments on the benefits of using this time for R&D on producing Nb3Sn on inexpensive and thermally efficient metals such as Cu or bronze, while pursuing in parallel the novel U.S. concept of parallel-feed RF accelerator structures. A technology that synergistically uses both of these advanced tools would make an ILC or equivalent machines more affordable and more likely to be built. Such a successful enterprise would readily apply to other HEP accelerators, for instance a Muon Collider, and to accelerators beyond HEP. We present and assess current efforts in the U.S. on the novel concept of parallel-feed RF accelerator structures, and in the U.S. and abroad in producing Nb3Sn films on either Cu or bronze despite minimal funding.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Construction of Differentially Private Summaries over Fully Homomorphic Encryption

Cloud computing has garnered attention as a platform of query processing systems. However, data privacy leakage is a critical problem. Chowdhury et al. proposed Crypt(epsilon), which executes differential privacy (DP) over encrypted data on two non-colluding semi-honest servers. Further, the DP index proposed by these authors summarizes a dataset to prevent information leakage while improving the performance. However, two problems persist: 1) the original data are decrypted to apply sorting via a garbled circuit, and 2) the added noise becomes large because the sorted data are partitioned with equal width, regardless of the data distribution. To solve these problems, we propose a new method called DP-summary that summarizes a dataset into differentially private data over a homomorphic encryption without decryption, thereby enhancing data security. Furthermore, our scheme adopts Li et al.'s data-aware and workload-aware (DAWA) algorithm for the encrypted data, thereby minimizing the noise caused by DP and reducing the errors of query responses. An experimental evaluation using torus fully homomorphic encryption (TFHE), a bit-wise fully homomorphic encryption library, confirms the applicability of the proposed method, which summarized eight 16-bit data in 12.5 h. We also confirmed that there was no accuracy degradation even after adopting TFHE along with the DAWA algorithm.
