Anisotropic order parameter in Li-intercalated layered superconductor Li$_x$ZrNCl

In this study, it is shown that in a layered nitride superconductor, i.e., LixZrNCl (0.07<=x<=0.21), the superconducting order parameter is highly anisotropic in a sample with x=0.12, as inferred from both the temperature and the magnetic field dependences of the muon depolarization rate (sigma_s, proportional to the superfluid density). Moreover, the tendency of strong anisotropy with an increase in x is indicated by the T dependence of sigma_s. These observations are in good agreement with the recent theory that predicts the development of anisotropy in a d+id' gap upon carrier filling to the bands with disconnected Fermi surfaces on a honeycomb lattice.

Spin squeezing of a cold atomic ensemble with the nuclear spin of one-half

To establish an applicable system for advanced quantum information processing between light and atoms, we have demonstrated the quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement with a collective spin of cold ytterbium atoms (171Yb), and observed 1.8 (-1.5, +2.4) dB spin squeezing. Since a 171Yb atom has only a nuclear spin of 1/2 in the ground state, the system is the simplest spin ensemble and robust against decoherence. We used very short pulses with the width of 100 ns, so the interaction time became much shorter than the decoherence time, which is important for multi-step quantum information processing.

Paramagnetic Faraday rotation with spin-polarized ytterbium atoms

We report observation of the paramagnetic Faraday rotation of spin-polarized ytterbium (Yb) atoms. As the atomic samples, we used an atomic beam, released atoms from a magneto-optical trap (MOT), and trapped atoms in a far-off-resonant trap (FORT). Since Yb is diamagnetic and includes a spin-1/2 isotope, it is an ideal sample for the spin physics, such as quantum non-demolition measurement of spin (spin QND), for example. From the results of the rotation angle, we confirmed that the atoms were almost perfectly polarized.

Fast polarimetry system for the application to spin quantum non-demolition measurement

We report the development of a fast pulse polarimeter for the application to quantum non-demolition measurement of atomic spin (Spin QND). The developed system was tunable to the atomic resonance of ytterbium atom and has narrow laser linewidth suitable for spin QND. Using the developed polarimeter, we successfully demonstrated the measurement of the vacuum noise, with 10^6 to 10^7 photon number per pulse.

Spin Squeezing via One-Axis Twisting with Coherent Light

We propose a new method of spin squeezing of atomic spin, based on the interactions between atoms and off-resonant light which are known as paramagnetic Faraday rotation and fictitious magnetic field of light. Since the projection process, squeezed light, or special interactions among the atoms are not required in this method, it can be widely applied to many systems. The attainable range of the squeezing parameter is S^{-2/5}, where S is the total spin, which is limited by additional fluctuations imposed by coherent light and the spherical nature of the spin distribution.

Observation of gamma-rays greater than 10 TeV from Markarian 421

We have observed Markarian 421 in January and March 2001 with the CANGAROO-II imaging Cherenkov telescope during an extraordinarily high state at TeV energies. From 14 hours observations at very large zenith angles, $\sim70^\circ$, a signal of 298 $\pm$ 52 gamma-ray--like events (5.7 $σ$) was detected at $E>10$ TeV, where a higher sensitivity is achieved than those of usual observations near the zenith, owing to a greatly increased collecting area. Under the assumption of an intrinsic power-law spectrum, we derived a differential energy spectrum $dN/dE = (3.3 \pm 0.9_{stat.} \pm 0.3_{syst.})\times10^{-13} (E/10 {Te V})^{-(4.0 ^{+0.9}_{-0.6}_{stat.} \pm 0.3_{syst.})}$ ph./cm$^2$/sec/TeV, which is steeper than those previously measured around 1 TeV, and supports the evidence for a cutoff in the spectrum of Markarian 421. However, the 4 $σ$ excess at energies greater than 20 TeV in our data favors a cutoff energy of $\sim$8 TeV, at the upper end of the range previously reported from measurements at TeV energies.

Search for gamma-rays above 10 TeV from Markarian 421 in a high state with the CANGAROO-II telescope

A preliminary result from Markarian 421 observations in the energy region above 10 TeV with the CANGAROO-II 10 m telescope is presented. In January 2001, the HEGRA group reported that Markarian 421 had become very active, with flux levels up to 4 times that of the Crab Nebula. As a result, we observed Mkn 421 during six nights from January 24th to February 1st, and four nights from March 1st to 4th. Observations were carried out using the very large zenith angle technique ($\sim$70 degree) and the energy threshold is estimated from Monte Carlo simulations to be around 10 TeV. We have detected gamma-ray emission in this energy range.
