First elastic electron scattering from $^{132}$Xe at the SCRIT facility

The first elastic electron scattering has been successfully performed at the self-confining RI ion target (SCRIT) facility, the world's first electron scattering facility for exotic nuclei. The SCRIT technique achieved high luminosity (over 10$^{27}$~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, sufficient for determining the nuclear shape) with only 10$^8$ target ions. While $^{132}$Xe used in this time as a target is stable isotope, the charge density distribution was firstly extracted from the momentum transfer distributions of the scattered electrons by comparing the results with those calculated by a phase shift calculation.

Near threshold angular distributions of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction

A study of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction was performed using a tagged photon beam at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. The photoproduced $Λ$ was measured in the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel by the upgraded Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS2+). The momentum integrated differential cross section was determined as a function of the scatting angle of $Λ$ in the laboratory frame for five energy bins. Our results indicated a peak in the cross section at angles smaller than cos$θ^{LAB}_Λ$ = $0.96$. The experimentally obtained angular distributions were compared to isobar models, Kaon-Maid (KM) and Saclay-Lyon A (SLA), in addition to the composite Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model. Both SLA(r$K_{1}K_γ$ = $-1.4$) and RPR describe the data quite well in contrast to the KM model, which substantially under predicted the cross section at the most forward angles. With the anticipated finalized data on $Λ$ integrated and momentum dependent differential cross sections of $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X~\cite{Kaneta_Beckford}, we present our findings on the angular distributions in this report.

Measurements of the photon induced production of $Λ$ in the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X process at threshold energies

An experiment was carried out with the NKS2+ in 2010 at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), in which tagged photon beams in the range of 0.8 $\le$ $E_γ$ $\le$ 1.1 GeV were impinged on a liquid $^2$H target positioned at the center of the NKS2+. The produced $Λ$ was subsequently detected by the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel. Integrated cross sections of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X in the angular region of 0.9 $\le$ $\cosθ_Λ^{LAB}$ $\le$ 1.0 was derived and compared with preceding experimental results of the NKS2 collaboration. In addition, the momentum spectra for two photon energy regions were also procured. The $Λ$ angle dependent cross sections as a function of the scattering angle in the laboratory system was additionally deduced. We present the latest results on the excitation function of $Λ$ photoproduction, the momentum distributions, angular distributions, and polarization.

Report on strangeness photoproduction experiments performed with the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2

An experiment designed to investigate the strangeness photoproduction process using a tagged photon beam in the energy range of 0.90 -1.08 GeV incident on a liquid deuterium target was successfully performed. The purpose of the experiment was to measure the production of neutral kaons and the lambda particles on a deuteron. The generation of photo produced particles was verified by the measurement of their decayed charged particles in the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2. The reconstructed invariant mass distributions were achieved by selecting events where two or more particles tracks were identified. Preliminary results are presented here.

Photoproduction of neutral kaons on the liquid deuterium target in the threshold region

The photoproduction process of neutral kaons on a liquid deuterium target is investigated near the threshold region, Egamma = 0.8-1.1 GeV. K0 events are reconstructed from positive and negative pions, and differential cross sections are derived. Experimental momentum spectra are compared with those calculated in the spectator model using a realistic deuteron wave function. Elementary amplitudes as given by recent isobar models and a simple phenomenological model are used to study the effect of the new data on the angular behavior of the elementary cross section. The data favor a backward-peaked angular distribution of the elementary n(gamma,K0)Lambda process, which provides additional constraints on current models of kaon photoproduction. The present study demonstrates that the n(gamma,K0)Lambda reaction can provide key information on the mechanism of the photoproduction of strangeness.

Photo-production of neutral kaons on 12C in the threshold region

Kaon photo-production process on $^{12}$C has been studied by measuring neutral kaons in a photon energy range of 0.8$-$1.1 GeV. Neutral kaons were identified by the invariant mass constructed from two charged pions emitted in the $K^{0}_{S}\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ decay channel. The differential cross sections as well as the integrated ones in the threshold photon energy region were obtained. The obtained momentum spectra were compared with a Spectator model calculation using elementary amplitudes of kaon photo-production given by recent isobar models. Present result provides, for the first time, the information on $n(γ,K^{0})Λ$ reaction which is expected to play an important role to construct models for strangeness production by the electromagnetic interaction. Experimental results show that cross section of $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,K^0)$ is of the same order to that of $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,K^+)$ and suggest that slightly backward $K^0$ angular distribution is favored in the $γn\to K^0Λ$ process.

Measurements of the Generalized Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton at Low Q2 Using the VCS Reaction

The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the first time in a virtual Compton scattering experiment performed at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and polarizabilities obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data at Q2=0.06 GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities, and the increase of beta with increasing Q2 is evidence for the cancellation of long-range diamagnetism by short-range paramagnetism from the pion cloud.

Threshold Electrodisintegration of ^3He

Cross sections were measured for the near-threshold electrodisintegration of ^3He at momentum transfer values of q=2.4, 4.4, and 4.7 fm^{-1}. From these and prior measurements the transverse and longitudinal response functions R_T and R_L were deduced. Comparisons are made against previously published and new non-relativistic A=3 calculations using the best available NN potentials. In general, for q<2 fm^{-1} these calculations accurately predict the threshold electrodisintegration of ^3He. Agreement at increasing q demands consideration of two-body terms, but discrepancies still appear at the highest momentum transfers probed, perhaps due to the neglect of relativistic dynamics, or to the underestimation of high-momentum wave-function components.

Measurement of the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction cross sections at low momentum transfer

The triple differential cross sections for the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction have been measured in the excitation energy region from 27 to 46 MeV in a search for evidence of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in 6Li. The cross sections have no distinct structures in this energy region, and decrease smoothly with the energy transfer. Angular distributions are different from those expected with the GDR. Protons are emitted strongly in the momentum-transfer direction. The data are well reproduced by a DWIA calculation assuming a direct proton knockout process.
