Discovery of mesoscopic nematicity wave in iron-based superconductors

Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high transition temperature superconductors, particularly in iron-based superconductors (IBSCs). Order parameter that characterizes the nematic phase has been investigated in momentum space, but its real-space arrangement remains largely unclear. We use linear dichroism (LD) in low-temperature laser-photoemission electron microscope to map out the nematic order parameter of nonmagentic FeSe and antiferromagnetic BaFe2(As0.87P0.13)2. In contrast to the structural domains that have atomic-scale domain walls, the LD patterns in both materials show peculiar sinusoidal waves of electronic nematicity with mesoscopic wavelength. The analysis reveals that the nematic order has an extremely long coherence length, more than 1000 times longer than the unit cell. Our direct visualization of electronic spatial variation uncovers a new fundamental aspect of quantum liquid crystalline states of correlated electrons in IBSCs.

Melting and metallization of silica in the cores of gas giants, ice giants and super Earths

The physical state and properties of silicates at conditions encountered in the cores of gas giants, ice giants and of Earth like exoplanets now discovered with masses up to several times the mass of the Earth remains mostly unknown. Here, we report on theoretical predictions of the properties of silica, SiO$_2$, up to 4 TPa and about 20,000K using first principle molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory. For conditions found in the Super-Earths and in ice giants, we show that silica remains a poor electrical conductor up to 10 Mbar due to an increase in the Si-O coordination with pressure. For Jupiter and Saturn cores, we find that MgSiO$_3$ silicate has not only dissociated into MgO and SiO$_2$, as shown in previous studies, but that these two phases have likely differentiated to lead to a core made of liquid SiO$_2$ and solid (Mg,Fe)O.

Non-thermal hot electrons ultrafastly generating hot optical phonons in graphite

Ultrafast dynamics of graphite is investigated by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe spectral features of direct photoexcitations, non-thermal electron distributions, and recovery dynamics occurring with two time scales having distinct pump-power dependences. Additionally, we find an anomalous increase of the spectral intensity around the Fermi level, and we attribute this to spectral broadenings due to coupled optical phonons in the transient. The fingerprints of the coupled optical phonons occur from the temporal region where the electronic temperature is still not definable. This implies that there is a mechanism of ultrafast-and-efficient phonon generations beyond a two-temperature model.

Upgrade of Linac Control System with New Vme Controllers at Spring-8

We integrated an injector linac control system to the SPring-8 standard system on September 2000. As a result of this integration, the SPring-8 accelerator complex was controlled by one unified system. Because the linac was continuously running as the electron beam injector not only for the SPring-8 storage ring but also for New SUBARU, we had to minimize the hardware modification to reduce the time for the development and testing of the new control system. The integration method was almost the same as that of the integration of the booster synchrotron. We report here on the integration of the linac control system with emphasis on the upgrade of the VMEbus controllers and software involving the operating system Solaris 7 as the real-time OS.
