Hybrid equation of state with pasta phases and third family of compact stars

The effect of pasta phases on the quark-hadron phase transition is investigated for a set of relativistic mean-field equations of state for both hadron and quark matter. The results of the full numerical solution with pasta phases are compared with those of an interpolating construction used in previous works, for which we demonstrate an adequate description of the numerical results. A one-to-one mapping of the free parameter of the construction to the physical surface tension of the quark-hadron interface is obtained for which a fit formula is given. For each pair of quark and hadron matter models the critical value of the surface tension is determined, above which the phase transition becomes close to the Maxwell construction. This result agrees well with earlier theoretical estimates. The study is extended to neutron star matter in beta equilibrium with electrons and muons and is applied to investigate the effect of pasta phases on the structure of hybrid compact stars and the robustness of a possible third family solution.

Fluctuations In The Inhomogeneous Chiral Transition

Chiral pair fluctuation are considered near the phase boundary of the inhomogeneous chiral phase (iCP). The fluctuations are then bosonized and an effective action for the chiral pair fluctuation is basically constructed by considering the ring diagram of the polarization function. We can evaluate the self-energy and effective four point interaction among fluctuations in a consistent way. The peculiar dispersion of the fluctuation, reflecting the spatially inhomogeneous transition, gives rise to interesting and qualitative results. Thermal fluctuations prohibit the second-order transition, while the effect of the quantum fluctuations is rather modest. Quantum and thermal fluctuations changes the second-order transition to the first one by changing the sign of the effective four-point interaction between effective mesons. These features may be observed by relativistic heavy-ion collisions through the analysis of the thermodynamic observables. Distinct from the second-order phase transition, the first moment such as entropy production exhibits an anomalous behavior due to fluctuations, which is one of the signals of the phase transition to iCP. Some similar aspects are also remarked between iCP and the FFLO state in superconductivity.

Hybrid Quark Stars With Strong Magnetic Field

Discovery of huge magnetic field in magnetars has stimulated a renewed interest about the magnetic field and physics of compact stars, where microphysics such as QED or QCD may play active parts. Here we discuss the equation of state (EOS) of quark matter in the core of compact stars by taking into account the strong magnetic field. We show that quark EOS becomes very stiff in the presence of the strong magnetic field, and becomes stiffest under the causality condition beyond the threshold strength of $B_c\sim O(10^{19})$ G. This is because quarks make the Landau levels in the presence of the magnetic field and thereby only the lowest Landau level is occupied in the extreme case beyond $B_c$. Thus quarks can freely move along the magnetic field with localization in the perpendicular plane, which resembles the quasi-one dimensional systems and gives rise to a stiff EOS. Consequently, we may easily produce high-mass stars beyond two solar mass. As another interesting possibility, we discuss the appearance of the third family of compact stars, succeeding white dwarfs and neutron stars, before collapsing into black holes. We demonstrate an example, which is specified by a discontinuous increase of the adiabatic index at the hadron-quark phase transition. Such new family may affect the supernova explosions or the gravitational wave emitted from the neutron star mergers.

Topological Aspects of the Imhomogeneous Chiral Phases and Implication on Compact Stars

Recent studies of our group are reviewed about the inhomogeneous chiral phase. Appearance of the inhomogeneous chiral phase is a new paradigm in the field of the QCD phase diagram. We consider the dual-chiral-density-wave in the presence of the magnetic field. Some topological effect manifests in the form of spectral asymmetry of the quark single-particle energy.

Quark-Hadron Phase Transition with Finite-Size Effects in Neutron Stars

We study the quark-hadron phase transition with the finite-size effects in neutron stars. The finite-size effects should be, generally, taken into account in the phase transition of multi-component system. The behavior of the phase transition, however, strongly depends on the models for quark and hadron matter, surface tension, neutrino fraction, and temperature. We find that, if the surface tension is strong, the EOS becomes similar to the case of a Maxwell construction for any hadron and/or quark model, though we adopt the Gibbs conditions. We also find that the mass-radius relations for that EOS are consistent with the observations, and our model is then applicable to realistic astrophysical phenomena such as the thermal evolution of compact stars.

Finite-size effects at the hadron-quark transition and heavy hybrid stars

We study the role of finite-size effects at the hadron-quark phase transition in a new hybrid equation of state constructed from an ab-initio Brückner-Hartree-Fock equation of state with the realistic Bonn-B potential for the hadronic phase and a covariant non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for the quark phase. We construct static hybrid star sequences and find that our model can support stable hybrid stars with an onset of quark matter below $2 M_\odot$ and a maximum mass above $2.17 M_\odot$ in agreement with recent observations. If the finite-size effects are taken into account the core is composed of pure quark matter. Provided that the quark vector channel interaction is small, and the finite size effects are taken into account, quark matter appears at densities 2-3 times the nuclear saturation density. In that case the proton fraction in the hadronic phase remains below the value required by the onset of the direct URCA process, so that the early onset of quark matter shall affect on the rapid cooling of the star.

Novel Lifshitz point for chiral transition in the magnetic field

Based on the generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory, chiral phase transition is discussed in the presence of magnetic field. Considering the chiral density wave we show chiral anomaly gives rise to an inhomogeneous chiral phase for nonzero quark-number chemical potential. Novel Lifshitz point appears on the vanishing chemical potential line, which may be directly explored by the lattice QCD simulation.

Inhomogeneous chiral phase in the magnetic field

Inhomogeneous chiral phase is discussed in the presence of the magnetic field. A topological aspect is pointed out for the complex order parameter, in relation to the spectral asymmetry of the Dirac operator. It induces an anomalous baryon number and extremely extends the region of the inhomogeneous chiral phase in the QCD phase diagram. It is also shown that the novel tricritical point appears at zero chemical potential, which should be examined by the lattice QCD simulation.

Variational approach to the inhomogeneous chiral phase in quark matter

The inhomogeneous chiral phase is discussed in QCD at finite temperature and/or density. We study the phase diagram on the density-temperature plane by taking into account the effect of the current mass by a variational method. It is demonstrated that our framework well describes the inhomogeneous phase over the whole phase region.

Quark beta decay in an inhomogeneous chiral phase and cooling of hybrid stars

We discuss the cooling of hybrid stars by considering the neutrino emission from quark matter. As a current topic the appearance of various inhomogeneous chiral phases have been studied near the chiral transition. Here we consider the dual-chiral-density-wave (DCDW) specified by the spatially modulated quark condensates. Since the DCDW state can be represented as a chirally rotated state from the normal quark matter, the quark weak-current is accordingly transformed to have an additional phase factor which modifies the energy-momentum conservation at the vertex, and makes the quark direct Urca process possible. The direct evaluation of the neutrino emissivity shows that it is proportional to and the magnitude is comparable with the quark or pion cooling. Since the DCDW phase develops only in the limited density region, this novel mechanism may give an interesting scenario about cooling of hybrid stars that lower-mass stars should be cooler than higher-mass ones.

Ferromagnetic properties of quark matter -an origin of magnetic field in compact stars-

Magnetic properties of quark matter are studied within the Landau Fermi-liquid theory, and magnetic phase diagram of QCD is presented in the density-temperature plane. The screening effect for gluon propagator is emphasized to see the characteristic behavior of the magnetic susceptibility; novel non-Fermi-liquid behavior is observed at finite temperature. Some implications on the origin of the magnetic field in compact stars, especially magnetars, are briefly discussed.

Spontaneous magnetization in QCD and non-Fermi-liquid effects

Magnetic properties of quark matter at finite temperature are discussed by evaluating the magnetic susceptibility. Combining the microscopic calculation of the self-energy for quarks as well as the screening effects for gluons with Fermi-liquid theory in a consistent way, we study the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. The longitudinal gluons have the static screening given by the Debye mass, and have a standard temperature dependence of $O(T^2)$. An anomalous $T^2\ln T$ term arises in the magnetic susceptibility as a novel non-Fermi-liquid effect due to the anomalous self-energy for quarks given by the dynamic screening for transverse gluons. We then extract the critical(Curie) temperature and present the magnetic phase diagram on the density-temperature plane.

Non-Fermi-liquid effect in magnetic susceptibility

Taking into account the anomalous self-energy for quarks due to the dynamic screening effect for the transverse gluon propagator, we study the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in detail. It is shown that there does not exist the $T\ln T$ term in the susceptibility, different from the specific heat, but an anomalous $T^2\ln T$ term arises instead as a novel non-Fermi-liquid effect.

Magnetic Susceptibility of Quark Matter

Magnetic properties of quark matter is discussed by evaluating the spin susceptibility within Fermi-liquid theory. We take into account the dynamical and static screening effects. At finite temperature, an anomalous T^2 ln T term for susceptibity is shown as a non-Fermi-liquid effect due to the dynamical screening of transverse gluons.

Magnetic susceptibility of quark matter within Fermi-liquid theory

Possibility of spontaneous magnetization in QCD and magnetic properties of quark matter is discussed by evaluating the magnetic susceptibility within Fermi-liquid theory. The screening effects for gluons are taken into account to figure out the specific properties of the magnetic transition in gauge theories. It is shown that the static screening effect in terms of the Debye mass does not necessarily work against the magnetic instability; it promotes the instability, depending on the coupling constant and the number of flavors.

Ferromagnetism in QCD phase diagram

A possibility and properties of spontaneous magnetization in quark matter are investigated. Magnetic susceptibility is evaluated within Fermi liquid theory, taking into account of the screening effect of gluons. Spin wave in the polarized quark matter, as the Nambu-Goldstone mode, is formulated by way of the coherent-state path integral.

How is chiral symmetry restored at finite density?

Taking into account pseudoscalar as well as scalar condensates, we reexamine the chiral restoration path on the chiral manifold. We shall see both condensates coherently produce a density wave at a certain density, which delays chiral restoration as density or temperature is increased.
