Automation of NLO processes and decays and POWHEG matching in WHIZARD

We give a status report on the automation of next-to-leading order processes within the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD, using GoSam and OpenLoops as provider for one-loop matrix elements. To deal with divergences, WHIZARD uses automated FKS subtraction, and the phase space for singular regions is generated automatically. NLO examples for both scattering and decay processes with a focus on e+e- processes are shown. Also, first NLO-studies of observables for collisions of polarized leptons beams, e.g. at the ILC, will be presented. Furthermore, the automatic matching of the fixed-order NLO amplitudes with emissions from the parton shower within the POWHEG formalism inside WHIZARD will be discussed. We also present results for top pairs at threshold in lepton collisions, including matching between a resummed threshold calculation and fixed-order NLO. This allows the investigation of more exclusive differential observables.

Exclusive $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ photoproduction and the low $x$ gluon

We study exclusive vector meson photoproduction, $γp \to V + p$ with $V=J/ψ$ or $Υ$, at NLO in collinear factorisation, in order to examine what may be learnt about the gluon distribution at very low $x$. We examine the factorisation scale dependence of the predictions. We argue that, using knowledge of the NLO corrections, terms enhanced by a large $\ln(1/ξ)$ can be reabsorbed in the LO part by a choice of the factorisation scale. (In these exclusive processes $ξ$ takes the role of Bjorken-$x$.) Then, the scale dependence coming from the remaining NLO contributions has no $\ln(1/ξ)$ enhancements. As a result, we find that predictions for the amplitude of $Υ$ production are stable to within about $\pm 15\%$. This will allow data for the exclusive process $p p \to pΥp$ at the LHC, particularly from LHCb, to be included in global parton analyses to constrain the gluon PDF down to $x\sim 10^{-5}$. Moreover, the study of exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction indicates that the gluon density found in the recent global PDF analyses is too small at low $x$ and low scales.

The strange and charm quark contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment (g -2) of the muon from current-current correlators

We describe a new technique (presented in arXiv:1403.1778) to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment (g-2) of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarisation using lattice QCD. Our method uses Padé approximants to reconstruct the Adler function from its derivatives at $q^2=0$. These are obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators calculated on MILC Collaboration's $n_f$ = 2+1+1 HISQ ensembles at multiple values of the lattice spacing, multiple volumes and multiple light sea quark masses (including physical pion mass configurations).

Strange and charm quark contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

We describe a new technique to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarization using lattice QCD. Our method reconstructs the Adler function, using Padé approximants, from its derivatives at $q^2=0$ obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators on large-volume gluon field configurations that include the effect of up and down (at physical masses), strange and charm quarks in the sea at multiple values of the lattice spacing and multiple volumes and show that 1% accuracy is achievable. For the charm quark contributions we use our previously determined moments with up, down and strange quarks in the sea on very fine lattices. We find the (connected) contribution to the anomalous moment from the strange quark vacuum polarization to be $a_μ^s = 53.41(59) \times 10^{-10}$, and from charm to be $a_μ^c = 14.42(39)\times 10^{-10}$. These are in good agreement with flavour-separated results from non-lattice methods, given caveats about the comparison. The extension of our method to the light quark contribution and to that from the quark-line disconnected diagram is straightforward.

Predictions of exclusive psi(2S) production at the LHC

The cross section for exclusive psi(2S) ultraperipheral production at the LHC is calculated using gluon parametrisations extracted from exclusive J/psi measurements performed at HERA and the LHC. Predictions are given at leading and next-to-leading order for pp centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 14 TeV, assuming the non-relativistic approximation for the psi(2S) wave function.

The mini-proceedings of the 14th Meeting of the "Working Group on Rad. Corrections and MC Generators for Low Energies" held in Frascati on September 13, 2013, as a satellite meeting of the PHIPSI13 conference in Rome, are presented. These meetings, started in 2006, have as aim to bring together experimentalists and theorists working in the fields of meson transition form factors, hadronic contributions to (g-2)_μand the effective fine structure constant, and development of MonteCarlo generators and Radiative Corrections for precision e+e- and tau physics.

Probes of the small x gluon via exclusive J/psi and Upsilon

New, more precise data on diffractive J/psi photoproduction and on exclusive J/psi production in the process pp -> p + J/psi + p at the LHC allow a better constraint on the low-x gluon distribution in the domain of relatively low scales Q^2 ~ 2-6 GeV^2. We account for the `skewed' effect and for the real part of the amplitude, as well as for the absorptive corrections in the case of the exclusive process pp -> p + J/psi + p. The predictions for exclusive J/psi production at \sqrt{s}=8 and 14 TeV and for exclusive Upsilon(1S) production at 7, 8 and 14 TeV are also given. We present results at leading and next-to-leading order.

(g-2)_mu and alpha(M_Z^2) re-evaluated using new precise data

We update our Standard Model predictions for g-2 of the muon and for the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling, Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2). Particular emphasis is put on recent changes in the hadronic contributions from new data in the 2pi channel and from the energy region just below 2 GeV. In particular, for the e+e- -> pi+pi- contribution we include the recent `radiative return' data from KLOE and BaBar. We also include the recent BaBar data on other exclusive channels. We make a detailed study of the effect of replacing the measurements of the inclusive cross section, sigma(e+e- -> hadrons), by the sum of the exclusive channels in the energy interval 1.43 < sqrt{s} < 2 GeV, which includes a QCD sum-rule analysis of this energy region. Our favoured prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is (g-2)/2 = (11659182.8 +- 4.9)*10^(-10) which is 3.3 sigma below the present world-average measurement. We compare our g-2 value with other recent calculations. Our prediction for the QED coupling, obtained via Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2) = (276.26 +- 1.38)*10^(-4), is alpha(M_Z^2)^(-1) = 128.944 +- 0.019.

Particular emphasis is put on recent changes in the hadronic contributions from new data in the 2pi channel and from the energy region just below 2 GeV.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

Generalised parton distributions at small x

We justify the practical use of the Shuvaev integral transform approach to calculate the skewed distributions, needed to describe diffractive processes, directly from the conventional diagonal global parton distributions. We address doubts which have been raised about this procedure. We emphasise that the approach, on the one hand, satisfies all theoretical reqirements, and, on the other hand, is consistent with DVCS data at NLO. We construct an easily accessible package for the computation of these skewed distributions.

Small x gluon from exclusive J/psi production

Exclusive J/psi production, gamma* p -> J/psi p, offers a unique opportunity to determine the gluon density of the proton in the small x domain. We use the available HERA data to determine the gluon distribution in the region 10^{-4} <~ x <~ 10^{-2} and 2 <~ Q^2 <~ 10 GeV^2, where the uncertainty on the gluon extracted from the global parton analyses is large. The gluon density is found to be approximately flat at the lower scale; it is compared with those of recent global analyses.

Improved predictions for g-2 of the muon and α_{\rm QED}(M_Z^2)

We update the Standard Model predictions of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a_μ= (g-2)/2, and the value of the QED coupling at the Z-boson mass, incorporating the new e^+e^- \to ππdata obtained by CMD-2 and KLOE, as well as the corrected SND data, and other improvements. The prediction for a_μ=11659180.4 (5.1) \times 10^{-10} is about 3 \times 10^{-10} lower than before, and has a smaller uncertainty, which corresponds to a 3.4σdeviation from the measured value. The prediction for the QED coupling is α(M_Z^2)^{-1}= 128.937 \pm 0.030.

Report of the 2005 Snowmass Top/QCD Working Group

This report discusses several topics in both top quark physics and QCD at an International Linear Collider (ILC). Issues such as measurements at the $t\bar{t}$ threshold, including both theoretical and machine requirements, and the determination of electroweak top quark couplings, are reviewed. New results concerning the potential of a 500 GeV $e^+e^-$ collider for measuring $Wtb$ couplings and the top quark Yukawa coupling are presented. The status of higher order QCD corrections to jet production cross sections, heavy quark form factors, and longitudinal gauge boson scattering, needed for percent-level studies at the ILC, are reviewed. A new study of the measurement of the hadronic structure of the photon at a $γγ$ collider is presented. The effects on top quark properties from several models of new physics, including composite models, Little Higgs theories, and CPT violation, are studied.

Heavy Quarkonium Physics

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Predictions for g-2 of the muon and alpha_QED(M_Z^2)

We calculate (g-2) of the muon and the QED coupling alpha(M_Z^2), by improving the determination of the hadronic vacuum polarization contributions and their uncertainties. We include the recently re-analysed CMD-2 data on e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^-. We carefully combine a wide variety of data for the e^+e^- production of hadrons, and obtain the optimum form of R(s) = sigma_had^0(s)/sigma_pt(s), together with its uncertainty. Our results for the hadronic contributions to g-2 of the muon are a_mu^(had, LO) = (692.4 +- 5.9_exp +- 2.4_rad) * 10^(-10) and a_mu^(had, NLO) = (-9.8 +- 0.1_exp +- 0.0_rad) * 10^(-10), and for the QED coupling Delta alpha^(5)_had (M_Z^2)= (275.5 +- 1.9_exp +- 1.3_rad) * 10^(-4). These yield (g-2)/2 = 0.00116591763(74), which is about 2.4 sigma below the present world average measurement, and alpha(M_Z^2)^(-1) = 128.954 +- 0.031. We compare our (g-2) value with other predictions and, in particular, make a detailed comparison with the latest determination of (g-2) by Davier et al.

The SM prediction of g-2 of the muon

We calculate (g-2)/2 of the muon, by improving the determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution, a_mu^{had,LO}, and its uncertainties. The different e+e- data sets for each exclusive (and the inclusive) channel are combined in order to obtain the optimum estimate of the cross sections and their uncertainties. QCD sum rules are evaluated in order to resolve an apparent discrepancy between the inclusive data and the sum of the exclusive channels. We conclude a_mu^{had,LO}=(683.1 +- 5.9_{exp} +- 2.0_{rad}) 10^{-10} which, when combined with the other contributions to (g-2)/2, is about 3 sigma below the present world average measurement.
