Nested Feature Spectrum Topology: Tripartite Topological Equivalence of Feature, Entanglement, and Wilson Loop Spectrum

Topological phases of matter are traditionally characterized through symmetry-based classifications. In cases of symmetry breaking, the projected spectrum - obtained by projecting the ground state onto the eigenstates of a pertinent quantum observable, such as spin or orbital angular momentum - provides a clear method for classifying topological phases. This approach underpins well-known frameworks such as spin-resolved topology and feature spectrum topology. Here we introduce nested feature spectrum topology, in which projection operators are applied recursively to subsectors of the feature spectrum, generating a hierarchy of feature spectra. We uncover a fundamental tripartite equivalence among the topology of feature, the entanglement, and the Wilson loop spectra in non-interacting fermionic systems. This equivalence reveals that the feature spectrum encodes the entanglement between sectors of the quantum observable, such as the spin-up and spin-down states in spin-resolved topology. We further prove that spectral flow in the entanglement spectrum and the Wilson loop winding in the feature spectrum are equivalent manifestations of the feature-energy complementarity: the appearance of gapless spectral flow in either energy or projected spectra on the boundary. This complementarity refines the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence by demonstrating that topological boundary modes may persist in the feature spectrum even when energy spectra are gapped. Our results provide a deeper understanding and solid foundation for the origin of band topology in the feature spectrum.

A Gell-Mann & Low Theorem Perspective on Quantum Computing: New Paradigm for Designing Quantum Algorithm

The Gell-Mann & Low theorem is a cornerstone of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and condensed matter physics, and many-body perturbation theory is a foundational tool for treating interactions. However, their integration into quantum algorithms remains a largely unexplored area of research, with current quantum simulation algorithms predominantly operating in the Schrödinger picture, leaving the potential of the interaction picture largely untapped. Our Variational Interaction-Picture S-matrix Ansatz (VIPSA) now fills this gap, specifically in the context of the Fermi-Hubbard model -- a canonical paradigm in condensed matter physics which is intricately connected to phenomena such as high-temperature superconductivity and Mott insulator transitions. This work offers a new conceptual perspective for variational quantum computing based upon the Gell-Mann & Low theorem. We achieve this by employing an innovative mathematical technique to explicitly unfold the normalized S-matrix, thereby enabling the systematic reconstruction of the Dyson series on a quantum computer, order by order. This method stands in contrast to the conventional reliance on Trotter expansion for adiabatic time evolution, marking a conceptual shift towards more sophisticated quantum algorithmic design. We leverage the strengths of the recently developed ADAPT-VQE algorithm, tailoring it to reconstruct perturbative terms effectively. Our simulations indicate that this method not only successfully recovers the Dyson series but also exhibits robust and stable convergence. We believe that our approach shows great promise in generalizing to more complex scenarios without increasing algorithmic complexity.

Many Body Localization in a Two Dimensional Itinerant SYK Model

We consider a two dimensional itinerant SYK model of spin-less fermions, with a linear dispersion, interacting via random long range all-to-all interactions. In the large-N limit, we find an asymptotic power series solution of the saddle-point equations, which demonstrate that the SYK interactions drive the formation of localized states in the strong coupling regime. By calculating the current-current correlation function, the ground state is shown to be insulating. Finally, we calculate the out-of-time-correlator (OTOC), which has a $t$-linear growth in time and an associated logarithmic growth of entanglement; thereby proving that the system forms a many body localized phase.

Spin Transport and Accumulation in 2D Weyl Fermion System

In this work, we study the spin Hall effect and Rashba-Edelstein effect of a 2D Weyl fermion system in the clean limit using the Kubo formalism. Spin transport is solely due to the spin-torque current in this strongly spin-orbit coupled (SOC) system, and chiral spin-flip scattering off non-SOC scalar impurities, with potential strength $V$ and size $a$, gives rise to a skew-scattering mechanism for the spin Hall effect. The key result is that the resultant spin-Hall angle has a fixed sign, with $θ^{SH} \sim O \left(\tfrac{V^2}{v_F^2/a^2} (k_F a)^4 \right)$ being a strongly-dependent function of $k_F a$, with $k_F$ and $v_F$ being the Fermi wave-vector and Fermi velocity respectively. This, therefore, allows for the possibility of tuning the SHE by adjusting the Fermi energy or impurity size.

Entangled Orbital Triplet Pairs in Iron-Based Superconductors

A key question in high temperature iron-based superconductivity is the mechanism by which the paired electrons minimize their strong mutual Coulomb repulsion. While electronically paired superconductors generally avoid the Coulomb interaction through the formation of nodal, higher angular momentum pairs, iron based superconductors appear to form singlet s-wave (s$^{\pm}$) pairs. By taking the orbital degrees of freedom of the iron atoms into account, here we argue that the s$^{\pm}$ state in these materials possesses internal d-wave structure, in which a relative d-wave ($L=2$) motion of the pairs entangles with the ($I=2$) internal angular momenta of the d-orbitals to form a low spin $J=L+I=0$ singlet. We discuss how the recent observation of a nodal gap with octahedral structure in KFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can be understood as a high spin ($J=L+I=4$) configuration of the orbital and isospin angular momenta; the observed pressure-induced phase transition into a fully gapped state can then interpreted as a high-to-low spin phase transition of the Cooper pairs.

$^{3}$He-R: A Topological $s^{\pm}$ Superfluid with Triplet Pairing

We show that when spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled by spin-orbit coupling, this transforms a topological spin-triplet superfluid/superconductor state, such as $^{3}$He-B, into a topological $s^{\pm}$ state, with non-trivial gapless edge states. Similar to $^{3}$He-B, the $s^{\pm}$ state also minimizes on-site Coulomb repulsion for weak to moderate interactions. A topological phase transition into a $d$-wave state occurs for sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling.

TAO pairing: a fully gapped pairing scenario for the Iron-Based Superconductors

Motivated by the fully gapped superconductivity in iron-based superconductors with uncompensated electron pockets, we propose a spin singlet, but orbital triplet analogue of the superfluid phase of He-3B. We show that orbital triplets with a nominal d-wave symmetry at the iron sites can transform as s-wave pairs under rotations about the selenium sites. Linear combinations of such d$_{xy}$ and d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ triplets form a fully gapped, topological superconductor. Raman-active excitations are predicted to develop below the superconducting transition temperature.

Local Quantum Criticality of an Iron-Pnictide Tetrahedron

Motivated by the close correlation between transition temperature ($T_c$) and the tetrahedral bond angle of the As-Fe-As layer observed in the iron-based superconductors, we study the interplay between spin and orbital physics of an isolated iron-arsenide tetrahedron embedded in a metallic environment. Whereas the spin Kondo effect is suppressed to low temperatures by Hund's coupling, the orbital degrees of freedom are expected to quantum mechanically quench at high temperatures, giving rise to an overscreened, non-Fermi liquid ground-state. Translated into a dense environment, this critical state may play an important role in the superconductivity of these materials.

Interfacial Effects of Al-Termination on Spin Transport in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Experiments have shown that the tunneling current in a Co/Al$_2$O$_3$ magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) is positively spin polarized, opposite to what is intuitively expected from standard tunneling theory which gives the spin polarization as exclusively dependent on the density of states (DOS) at $E_F$ of the Co layers. Here we report theoretical results that give a positive tunneling spin polarization and tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) that is in good agreement with experiments. From density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an Al-rich interface MTJ with atomic-level disorder is shown to have a positively polarized DOS near the interface. We also provide an atomic model calculation which gives insights into the source of the positive polarization. A layer and spin dependent effective mass model, using values extracted from the DFT results, is then used to calculate the tunneling current, which shows positive spin polarization. Finally, we calculate the TMR from the tunneling spin polarization which shows good agreement with experiments.

Nonlinear Sigma Model Analysis of the AFM Phase Transition of the Kondo Lattice

We have studied the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition of a 2D Kondo-Heisenberg square lattice using the non-linear sigma model. A renormalization group analysis of the competing Kondo -- RKKY interaction was carried out to 1-loop order in the $ε$ expansion, and a new quantum critical point is found, dominated by Kondo fluctuations. In addition, the spin-wave velocity scales logarithmically near the new QCP, i.e breakdown of hydrodynamic behavior. The results allow us to propose a new phase diagram near the AFM fixed point of this 2D Kondo lattice model.

Generalized Schrieffer-Wolff Transformation of 2 Kondo Impurity Problem

We have carried out a generalized Schrieffer-Wolff transformation of an Anderson two-impurity Hamiltonian to study the low-energy spin interactions of the system. The second-order expansion yields the standard Kondo Hamiltonian for two impurities with additional scattering terms. At fouth-order, we get the well-known RKKY interaction. In addition, we also find an antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling and a correlated Kondo coupling between the two impurities.
