Front-end-Electronics for the SiPM-readout gaseous TPC for neutrinoless double beta decay search

We have developed a dedicated front-end-electronics board for a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber for a neutrinoless double-beta decay search. The ionization signal is readout by detecting electroluminescence photons with SiPM's. The board readout the signal from 56~SiPM's through the DC-coupling and record the waveforms at 5 MS/s with a wide dynamic range up to 7,000 photons/200 ns. The SiPM bias voltages are provided by the board and can be adjusted for each SiPM. In order to calibrate and monitor the SiPM gain, additional auxiliary ADC measures 1 photon-equivalent dark current. The obtained performance satisfies the requirement for a neutrinoless double-beta decay search.

Performance evaluation of a silicon strip detector for positrons/electrons from a pulsed a muon beam

A high-intensity pulsed muon beam is becoming available at the at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Many experiments to study fundamental physics using this high-intensity muon beam are proposed. An experiment to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly ($g-2$) and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) is one of these experiments and it requires a tracking detector for positrons from muon decay. Fine segmentation is required in a detector to tolerate the high rate of positrons. The time resolution is required to be much better than the muon anomalous spin precession period while a buffer depth of a front-end electronics needs to be much longer than the accelerated muon lifetime. Requirements of this detector also meet requirements of a measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure interval at the J-PARC and another experiment to measure the proton charge radius at Tohoku University. We have developed a single-sided silicon strip sensor with a 190 $\mu$m pitch, a front-end electronics with a sampling rate of 200 MHz and a buffer memory depth of 8192, and a data acquisition system based on DAQ-Middleware for the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment. We have fabricated detector modules consisting of this sensor and the front-end electronics. Performance of fabricated detector modules was evaluated at a laboratory and a beam test using the positron beam at Tohoku University. The detector is confirmed to satisfy all requirements of the experiments except for the time walk, which will be solved by the next version of a front-end electronics.

A New Approach for Measuring the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Electric Dipole Moment

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_μ = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_μ$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_μ$ and $d_μ$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_μ$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5\times 10^{-21}~e\cdot\mbox{cm}$.

Trigger Merging Module for the J-PARC E16 Experiment

An experiment to measure an invariant mass of ϕ mesons in nuclear medium is planned as the J-PARC E16 experiment. A trigger merging module (TRG-MRG) has been developed to detect leading-edges from 256 channels of discriminator-output signals and transmit those serialized hit data to trigger decision module with four optical links. The result of the test shows enough performance of the TRG-MRG as 1 ns TDC and data multiplexer with four 6.25 Gbps transceivers.

Experiments with biased side electrodes in electron cyclotron resonance ion sources

The output of highly charged ions from an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) consists of ionic losses from a highly confined plasma. Therefore, an increase of the output of the ions of interest always is a compromise between an increase in the confinement and an increase of the losses. One route towards a solution consists of attacking the losses in directions (i.e., radial directions) that do not contribute to the required output. This was demonstrated in an experiment (using the Kei ECRIS at NIRS, Japan) where radial losses were electrostatically reduced by positively biasing one set of six side electrodes surrounding the plasma in side-ward directions attached (insulated) to the cylindrical wall of the plasma chamber. Recently new studies were performed in two laboratories using two essentially different ion sources. At the BioNano ECRIS (Toyo University, Japan) various sets of electrodes were used; each of the electrodes could be biased individually. At the Atomki ECRIS (Hungary), one movable, off-axis side electrode was applied in technically two versions. The measurements show indeed a decrease of ionic losses but different effectivities as compared to the biased disk.

Fullerene-rare gas mixed plasmas in an electron cyclotron resonance ion source

A synthesis technology of endohedral fullerenes such as Fe@C60 has developed with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source. The production of N@C60 was reported. However, the yield was quite low, since most fullerene molecules were broken in the ECR plasma. We have adopted gas-mixing techniques in order to cool the plasma and then reduce fullerene dissociation. Mass spectra of ion beams extracted from fullerene-He, Ar or Xe mixed plasmas were observed with a Faraday cup. From the results, the He gas mixing technique is effective against fullerene destruction.

Synthesis of endohedral iron-fullerenes by ion implantation

In this paper, we discuss the results of our study of the synthesis of endohedral iron-fullerenes. A low energy Fe+ ion beam was irradiated to C60 thin film by using a deceleration system. Fe+-irradiated C60 thin film was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography and laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We investigated the performance of the deceleration system for using a Fe+ beam with low energy. In addition, we attempted to isolate the synthesized material from a Fe+-irradiated C60 thin film by high performance liquid chromatography.

Status of the Bio-Nano electron cyclotron resonance ion source at Toyo University

In the paper, the material science experiments, carried out recently using the Bio-Nano electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) at Toyo University, are reported. We have investigated several methods to synthesize endohedral C60 using ion-ion and ion-molecule collision reaction in the ECRIS. Because of the simplicity of the configuration, we can install a large choice of additional equipment in the ECRIS. The Bio-Nano ECRIS is suitable not only to test the materials production but also to test technical developments to improve or understand the performance of an ECRIS.

Magnetic induction dependence of the dispersion of magnetoplasmon in a two-dimensional electron gas with finite layer thickness

Magnetic induction dependence of the dispersion of longitudinal magnetoplasmon in a two-dimensional electron gas with finite layer thickness under a static uniform magnetic field normal to the layer plane is calculated using the self-consistent linear response approximation. Two longitudinal magnetoplasmon modes are obtained. The calculated dispersion agrees with the experiment by Batke {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 34}, 6951 (1986)].

Development of the Photomultiplier-Tube Readout System for the CTA Large Size Telescope

We have developed a prototype of the photomultiplier tube (PMT) readout system for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Large Size Telescope (LST). Two thousand PMTs along with their readout systems are arranged on the focal plane of each telescope, with one readout system per 7-PMT cluster. The Cherenkov light pulses generated by the air showers are detected by the PMTs and amplified in a compact, low noise and wide dynamic range gain block. The output of this block is then digitized at a sampling rate of the order of GHz using the Domino Ring Sampler DRS4, an analog memory ASIC developed at Paul Scherrer Institute. The sampler has 1,024 capacitors per channel and four channels are cascaded for increased depth. After a trigger is generated in the system, the charges stored in the capacitors are digitized by an external slow sampling ADC and then transmitted via Gigabit Ethernet. An onboard FPGA controls the DRS4, trigger threshold, and Ethernet transfer. In addition, the control and monitoring of the Cockcroft-Walton circuit that provides high voltage for the 7-PMT cluster are performed by the same FPGA. A prototype named Dragon has been developed that has successfully sampled PMT signals at a rate of 2 GHz, and generated single photoelectron spectra.

Search for VHE gamma rays from SS433/W50 with the CANGAROO-II telescope

SS433, located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, is a close proximity binary system consisting of a compact star and a normal star. Jets of material are directed outwards from the vicinity of the compact star symmetrically to the east and west. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission is detected from lobes lying on both sides. Shock accelerated electrons are expected to generate sub-TeV gamma rays through the inverse-Compton process in the lobes. Observations of the western X-ray lobe region of SS433/W50 system have been performed to detect sub-TeV gamma-rays using the 10m CANGAROO-II telescope in August and September, 2001, and July and September, 2002. The total observation times are 85.2 hours for ON source, and 80.8 hours for OFF source data. No significant excess of sub-TeV gamma rays has been found at 3 regions of the western X-ray lobe of SS433/W50 system. We have derived 99% confidence level upper limits to the fluxes of gamma rays and have set constraints on the strengths of the magnetic fields assuming the synchrotron/inverse-Compton model for the wide energy range of photon spectrum from radio to TeV. The derived lower limits are 4.3 microgauss for the center of the brightest X-ray emission region and 6.3 microgauss for the far end from SS433 in the western X-ray lobe. In addition, we suggest that the spot-like X-ray emission may provide a major contribution to the hardest X-ray spectrum in the lobe.

Spin and charge orders and their hole-doping dependence in single layered cobaltate La2-xCaxCoO4(0.3<x<0.8)

Neutron scattering experiments were performed on single crystals of layered cobalt-oxides La2-xCaxCoO4 (LCCO) to characterize the charge and spin orders in a wide hole-doping range of 0.3<x<0.8. For a commensurate value of x=0.5 in (H,0,L) plane, two types of superlattice reflections concomitantly appear at low temperature; one corresponds to a checkerboard charge ordered pattern of Co2+/Co3+ ions and the other is magnetic in origin. Further, the latter magnetic-superlattice peaks show two types of symmetry in the reflections, suggesting antiferromagnetic-stacking (AF-S) and ferromagnetic-stacking (F-S) patterns of spins along the c direction. From the hole-doping dependence, the in-plane correlation lengths of both charge and spin orders are found to give a maximum at x=0.5. These features are the same with those of x=0.5 in La1-xSr1+xMnO4 (LSMO), a typical checkerboard and spin ordered compound. However, in (H,H,L) plane, we found a magnetic scattering peak at Q=(1/4,1/4,1/2) position below TN. This magnetic peak can not be understood by considering the Co2+ spin configuration, suggesting that this peak is originated from Co3+ spin order. By analyzing these superlattice reflections, we found that they are originated from high-spin state of Co3+ spin order.

Development of an atmospheric Cherenkov imaging camera for the CANGAROO-III experiment

A Cherenkov imaging camera for the CANGAROO-III experiment has been developed for observations of gamma-ray induced air-showers at energies from 10$^{11}$ to 10$^{14}$ eV. The camera consists of 427 pixels, arranged in a hexagonal shape at 0.17$^\circ$ intervals, each of which is a 3/4-inch diameter photomultiplier module with a Winston-cone--shaped light guide. The camera was designed to have a large dynamic range of signal linearity, a wider field of view, and an improvement in photon collection efficiency compared with the CANGAROO-II camera. The camera, and a number of the calibration experiments made to test its performance, are described in detail in this paper.
