Performance of the FARICH-based particle identification at charm superfactories using machine learning

A detailed study of the particle identification by the Focusing Aerogel Ring Imaging CHerenkov subsystem at the future charm superfactory detector is presented. The dedicated signal ring reconstruction algorithm is implemented in the detector simulation, the algorithm performance is tested with single particles generated within the Aurora framework. Two Boosted Decision Trees-based classifiers for the particle identification have been developed for various assumptions about photosensor noise levels. The approach is validated with the analysis of the D0->Kmunu decays, for which the systematic uncertainty and background contribution related to the pion/muon separation performance can be minimised due to high efficiency of the particle identification algorithm.

Design and Commissioning of Readout Electronics for a $K_L^0$ and $μ$ Detector at the Belle II Experiment

The K-long and muon detector (KLM) constitutes the outer-most volume of the Belle II spectrometer at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan. The KLM detector was partially upgraded since the Belle experiment by replacing many of its resistive-plate chambers with scintillators containing wavelength-shifting fibers and instrumenting it with silicon photomultipliers. We describe the readout electronics, firmware, and software created to control and acquire data from the scintillators and resistive-plate chambers.

On measurement of photon polarization in radiative penguin $B$ decays to baryons

A measurement of the photon polarization in radiative penguin $B$ decays provides a test of the Standard Model and a probe for New Physics, that can lead to a deviation from the Standard Model prediction of left-handed photons in $b\to s γ$. We propose a new method to measure the photon polarization using the baryonic decay $B^- \to Λ\bar{p} γ$. The $P$-violating $Λ$-hyperon decay allows a measurement of the $Λ$ helicity to be performed, which can be uniquely related to the photon polarization in a model-independent way. The $B^- \to Λ\bar{p} γ$ decay was recently measured to have a large branching fraction providing a possibility to get meaningful results with the data already available at LHC and B-factory experiments. An increase of the $B$-meson sample at high luminosity LHC experiments and Belle II should provide a really stringent test by using this method already in the near future.

Charged charmonium-like Z+(4430) from rescattering in conventional B decays

In a previous paper we suggested an explanation for the peak designated as $Z(4430)^+$ in the $ψ^\primeπ^+$ mass spectrum, observed by Belle in ${\bar{\!B}} \to {ψ^\prime} π^+ K$ decays, as an effect of $\bar{\!D}{}^{\,*0}D^{\,+} \to ψ^\primeπ^+$ rescattering in the decays ${\bar{\!B}} \to {D_{s}^{\,\prime -}} {D}$, where the $D_{s}^{\,\prime -}$ is an as-yet unobserved radial excitation of the pseudoscalar ground state $D_{s}^{\,-}$-meson. In this paper, we demonstrate that this hypothesis provides an explanation of the double $Z^+$-like peaking structures, which were studied by LHCb with much higher statistics. While according to our hypothesis, the origin of the peaking structures is purely kinematical, reflecting the presence of a conventional resonance in the hidden intermediate state, the amplitude of the $Z(4430)^+$ peak carries a Breit-Wigner-like complex phase, arising from the intermediate $D_{s}^{\,\prime -}$ resonance. Thus, our hypothesis is entirely consistent with the recent LHCb measurement of the resonant-like amplitude behaviour of the $Z(4430)^+$. We perform a toy fit to the LHCb data, which illustrates that our approach is also consistent with all the observed structure in the LHCb $M({{ψ^\prime}π^+})$ spectrum. We suggest a critical test of our hypothesis that can be performed experimentally.

A scintillator based muon and KLong detector for the Belle II experiment

A new muon and K_Long detector based on scintillators will be used for the endcap and inner barrel regions in the Belle II experiment, currently under construction. The increased luminosity of the e+e- SuperKEKB collider entails challenging detector requirements. We demonstrate that relatively inexpensive polystyrene scintillator stips with wave length shifting fibers ensure a sufficient light yield at the Silcon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) photodetector, are robust and provide improved physics performance for the Belle II experiment compared to its predecessor, Belle.

First study of η_c, η(1760) and X(1835) production via η'π^+π^- final states in two-photon collisions

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the η_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for η(1760) decay to η' π^+ π^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and η(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product Γ_{γγ} \BR (η' π^+ π^-) for the X(1835).

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Recent results from Belle

The review on experimental results on charmonium and charmonium-like spectroscopy from B-factories is presented. Main theoretical interpretations, such as conventional charmonium, molecular state, hybrids, tetraquarks and others are discussed.

Measurement of the e+e- -> D(*)+D(*)- cross-sections

We report first measurements of e+e- -> D(*)+D(*)- processes far above threshold. The cross-sections for e+e- -> DT*+DL*- and e+e- -> D+D*T- at sqrt{s}=10.58 GeV/c2 are measured to be 0.55 +- 0.03 +- 0.05 pb and 0.62 +- 0.03 +- 0.06 pb, respectively. We set upper limits on the cross-sections for e+e- -> DT*+DT*-, e+e- -> DL*+DL*-, e+e- -> D+D*L- and e+e- -> D+D- processes. The analysis is based on 88.9 fb-1 of data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric collider.
