Light hadron spectroscopy in two-flavor QCD with small sea quark masses

We extend the study of the light hadron spectrum and the quark mass in two-flavor QCD to smaller sea quark mass, corresponding to $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.60$--0.35. Numerical simulations are carried out using the RG-improved gauge action and the meanfield-improved clover quark action at $β=1.8$ ($a = 0.2$ fm from $ρ$ meson mass). We observe that the light hadron spectrum for small sea quark mass does not follow the expectation from chiral extrapolations with quadratic functions made from the region of $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.80$--0.55. Whereas fits with either polynomial or continuum chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) fails, the Wilson ChPT (WChPT) that includes $a^2$ effects associated with explicit chiral symmetry breaking successfully fits the whole data: In particular, WChPT correctly predicts the light quark mass spectrum from simulations for medium heavy quark mass, such as $m_{PS}/m_V \simgt 0.5$. Reanalyzing the previous data %at $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.80$--0.55 with the use of WChPT, we find the mean up and down quark mass being smaller than the previous result from quadratic chiral extrapolation by approximately 10%, $m_{ud}^{\bar{\rm MS}}(μ=2 {GeV}) = 3.11(17)$ [MeV] in the continuum limit.

Chiral extrapolations with small sea quark mass data in two-flavor lattice QCD

We present results on the light hadron spectrum and quark mass in two-flavor QCD calculated with small sea quark masses down to $m_{PS}/m_{V}=0.35$. The configurations are generated using the RG improved gauge and tadpole-improved clover quark action at $β=1.8$, where $a^{-1} \simeq 1$ GeV. Chiral extrapolations are made using not only polynomials and ChPT in the continuum but also formulae of Wilson chiral perturbation theory (WChPT) including $O(a^2)$ chiral breaking terms. We examine the viability of WChPT and its influence on quark masses.

Non-perturbative renormalization of meson decay constants in quenched QCD for a renormalization group improved gauge action

Renormalization constants ($Z$-factors) of vector and axial-vector currents are determined non-perturbatively in quenched QCD for a renormalization group improved gauge action and a tadpole improved clover quark action using the Schrödinger functional method. Non-perturbative values of $Z$-factors turn out to be smaller than one-loop perturbative values by $O(15%)$ at lattice spacing of $a^{-1}\approx$ 1 GeV. The pseudoscalar and vector meson decay constants calculated with the non-perturbative $Z$-factors show a much better scaling behavior compared to previous results obtained with tadpole improved one-loop $Z$-factors. In particular, the non-perturbative $Z$-factors normalized at infinite physical volume show that scaling violation of the decay constants are within about 10% up to the lattice spacing $a^{-1}\sim 1$ GeV. The continuum estimates obtained from data in the range $a^{-1}=$ 1 -- 2 GeV agree with those determined from finer lattices ($a^{-1}\sim 2-4$ GeV) with the standard action.

Study of finite volume effects in the non-perturbative determination of $\csw$ with the SF method in full three-flavor lattice QCD

The non-perturbative $\csw$ determined by the Schrödinger functional (SF) method with the RG-improved gauge action in dynamical $N_f=3$ QCD shows a finite volume effect when the numerical simulations are carried out at a constant lattice size $L/a$. We remove the unwanted finite volume effect by keeping physical lattice extent $L$ at a constant. The details of the method and the result obtained for non-perturbative $\csw$ with a constant $L$ are reported.

Two flavors of dynamical quarks on anisotropic lattices

We report on our study of two-flavor full QCD on anisotropic lattices using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks coupled with an RG-improved glue. The bare gauge and quark anisotropies corresponding to the renormalized anisotropy $ξ=a_s/a_t = 2$ are determined as functions of $β$ and $κ$, which covers the region of spatial lattice spacings $a_s\approx 0.28$--0.16 fm and $m_{PS}/m_V\approx 0.6$--0.9. The calibrations of the bare anisotropies are performed with the Wilson loop and the meson dispersion relation at 4 lattice cutoffs and 5--6 quark masses. Using the calibration results we calculate the meson mass spectrum and the Sommer scale $r_0$. We confirm that the values of $r_0$ calculated for the calibration using pseudo scalar and vector meson energy momentum dispersion relation coincide in the continuum limit within errors. This work serves to lay ground toward studies of heavy quark systems and thermodynamics of QCD including the extraction of the equation of state in the continuum limit using Wilson-type quark actions.

Non-Perturbative Determination of $c_{\rm SW}$ in Three-flavor Dynamical QCD

We present a fully non-perturbative determination of the $O(a)$ improvement coefficient $c_{\rm SW}$ in three-flavor dynamical QCD for the RG improved as well as the plaquette gauge actions, using the Schrödinger functional scheme. Results are compared with one-loop estimates at weak gauge coupling.

Quenched charmonium spectrum

We study charmonium using the standard relativistic formalism in the quenched approximation, on a set of lattices with isotropic lattice spacings ranging from 0.1 to 0.04 fm. We concentrate on the calculation of the hyperfine splitting between eta_c and J/psi, aiming for a controlled continuum extrapolation of this quantity. The splitting extracted from the non-perturbatively improved clover Dirac operator shows very little dependence on the lattice spacing for $a \leq 0.1$ fm. The dependence is much stronger for Wilson and tree-level improved clover operators, but they still yield consistent extrapolations if sufficiently fine lattices, $a \leq 0.07$ fm ($a M(η_c) \leq 1$), are used. Our result for the hyperfine splitting is 77(2)(6) MeV (where Sommer's parameter, r_0, is used to fix the scale). This value remains about 30% below experiment. Dynamical fermions and OZI-forbidden diagrams both contribute to the remainder. Results for the eta_c and J/psi wave functions are also presented.

Renormalization group improved action on anisotropic lattices

We study a block spin transformation in the SU(3) lattice gauge theory on anisotropic lattices to obtain Iwasaki's renormalization group improved action for anisotropic cases. For the class of actions with plaquette and $1\times2$ rectangular terms, we determine the improvement parameters as functions of the anisotropy $ξ= a_s/a_t$. We find that the program of improvement works well also on anisotropic lattices. From a study of an indicator which estimates the distance to the renormalized trajectory, we show that, for the range of the anisotropy $ξ\approx 1$--4, the coupling parameters previously determined for isotropic lattices improve the theory considerably.

Flavor Singlet Meson Mass in the Continuum Limit in Two-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present results for the mass of the eta-prime meson in the continuum limit for two-flavor lattice QCD, calculated on the CP-PACS computer, using a renormalization-group improved gauge action, and Sheikholeslami and Wohlert's fermion action with tadpole-improved csw. Correlation functions are measured at three values of the coupling constant beta corresponding to the lattice spacing a approx. 0.22, 0.16, 0.11 fm and for four values of the quark mass parameter kappa corresponding to mpi over mrho approx. 0.8, 0.75, 0.7 and 0.6. For each beta, kappa pair, 400-800 gauge configurations are used. The two-loop diagrams are evaluated using a noisy source method. We calculate eta-prime propagators using local sources, and find that excited state contributions are much reduced by smearing. A full analysis for the smeared propagators gives metaprime=0.960(87)+0.036-0.248 GeV, in the continuum limit, where the second error represents the systematic uncertainty coming from varying the functional form for chiral and continuum extrapolations.

Results for the Etaprime Mass from Two-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present results for the mass of the etaprime meson for two-flavor lattice QCD in the continuum limit, calculated on the CP-PACS computer, using an RG-improved gauge action and clover fermion action with tadpole-improved csw. Measurements are made at three couplings corresponding to a approx. 0.22, 0.16, 0.11 fm for four quark masses corresponding to mpi over mrho approx. 0.8, 0.75, 0.7, 0.6. Thw two-loop diagrams are evaluated using a noisy source method. Quark smearing for both one- and two- loop diagrams is successfully applied to obtain ground state signals in the etaprime channel. We obtain metaprime=0.960(87)+0.036-0.286GeV in the continuum limit, where the second error represents the systematic uncertainty coming from varying the functional form for chiral and continuum extrapolations.

Temporal meson correlators at finite temperature on quenched anisotropic lattice

We study charmonium correlators at finite temperature in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD. The smearing technique is applied to enhance the low energy part of the correlator. We use two analysis procedures: the maximum entropy method for extraction of the spectral function without assuming specific form, as an estimate of the shape of spectral function, and the $χ^2$ fit assuming typical forms as quantitative evaluation of the parameters associated to the forms. We find that at $T\simeq 0.9T_c$ the ground state peak has almost the same mass as at T=0 and almost vanishing width. At $T\simeq 1.1T_c$, our result suggests that the correlator still has nontrivial peak structure at almost the same position as below $T_c$ with finite width.

Exploring QCD at small sea quark masses with improved Wilson-type quarks

We explore the region of small sea quark masses below $m_{PS}/m_V=0.5$ in two-flavor QCD using a mean-field improved clover quark action and an RG-improved gauge action at $a \simeq 0.2$ fm on $12^3 \times 24$ and $16^3 \times 24$ lattices. We find that instability of the standard BiCGStab algorithm at small quark masses can be mostly removed by the BiCGStab(DS-$L$) algorithm, which employs $L$-th minimal residual polynomials with a dynamical selection of $L$. We also find singular spikes of $ΔH$ in the HMC algorithm at moderate values of $Δτ$. Nature of the spike is studied. We also study finite-size effects and chiral properties of meson masses.

Renormalization group flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory - Numerical studies in a two coupling space

We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory in a two coupling space with couplings $β_{11}$ and $β_{12}$ corresponding to $1\times 1$ and $1\times 2$ loops respectively. Extensive numerical calculations of the RG flow are made in the fourth quadrant of this coupling space, i.e., $β_{11}>0$ and $β_{12}<0$. Swendsen's factor two blocking and the Schwinger-Dyson method are used to find an effective action for the blocked gauge field. The resulting renormalization group flow runs quickly towards an attractive stream which has an approximate line shape. This is numerical evidence of a renormalized trajectory which locates close to the two coupling space. A model flow equation which incorporates a marginal coupling (asymptotic scaling term), an irrelevant coupling and a non-perturbative attraction towards the strong coupling limit reproduces qualitatively the observed features. We further examine the scaling properties of an action which is closer to the attractive stream than the currently used improved actions. It is found that this action shows excellent restoration of rotational symmetry even for coarse lattices with $a \sim 0.3$ fm.

Screening mass responses to the chemical potential at finite temperature

Responses to chemical potential of the pseudoscalar meson screening mass and the chiral condensate in lattice QCD are investigated. On a $16 \times 8^2 \times \4$ lattice with two flavors of staggered quarks the first and second responses below and above $T_c$ are evaluated. Different behavior in the low and the high temperature phases are observed, which may be explained as a consequence of the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration.

Study of spatial meson correlators at finite temperature in quenched anisotropic lattice QCD

We analyze the meson correlator in the spatial direction at finite temperature. To achieve fine resolution in the spatial direction, we use an anisotropic lattice with the standard Wilson plaquette gauge action and the $O(a)$ improved Wilson quark action. Below and above $T_c$, properties of correlators are investigated by two methods: fits with ansatz for the spectral function, and direct reconstruction of the spectral function using the maximum entropy method.

Responses of hadrons to chemical potential at finite temperature

We present a framework to compute the responses of hadron masses to the chemical potential in lattice QCD simulations. As a first trial, the screening mass of the pseudoscalar meson and its first and second responses are evaluated. We present results on a $16\times 8^2\times 4$ lattice with two flavors of staggered quarks below and above $T_c$. The responses to both the isoscalar and isovector chemical potentials are obtained. They show different behavior in the low and the high temperature phases, which may be explained as a consequence of chiral symmetry breaking and restoration, respectively.

O(a) improved Wilson quark action on anisotropic lattice

The $O(a)$ improved Wilson quark action on the anisotropic lattice is investigated. We carry out numerical simulations in the quenched approximation at three values of lattice spacing ($a_σ^{-1}=1$--2 GeV) with the anisotropy $ξ=a_σ/a_τ=4$, where $a_σ$ and $a_τ$ are the spatial and the temporal lattice spacings, respectively. Using the dispersion relation of mesons, the bare anisotropy $γ_F$ in the quark action is numerically tuned below the charm quark mass region with the statistical accuracy of 1 % level. The systematic uncertainties in the calibration are examined and found to be under control in the continuum limit. Then we compute the light hadron masses and find that they are consistent with the result of the UKQCD Collaboration on the isotropic lattice. The effect of the uncertainty in the calibration on the hadron spectrum for physical quark masses is also found to be under control.
