Luminescence from highly excited nanorings: Luttinger liquid description

We study theoretically the luminescence from quantum dots of a ring geometry. For high excitation intensities, photoexcited electrons and holes form Fermi seas. Close to the emission threshold, the single-particle spectral lines aquire weak many-body satellites. However, away from the threshold, the discrete luminescence spectrum is completely dominated by many-body transitions. We employ the Luttinger liquid approach to exactly calculate the intensities of all many-body spectral lines. We find that the transition from single-particle to many-body structure of the emission spectrum is governed by a single parameter and that the distribution of peaks away from the threshold is universal.

Spin dynamics in nonlinear optical spectroscopy of Fermi sea systems

We discuss the role of many-body spin correlations in nonlinear optical response of a Fermi sea system with a deep impurity level. Due to the Hubbard repulsion between electrons at the impurity, the optical transitions between the impurity level and the Fermi sea states lead to an optically-induced Kondo effect. In particular, the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility logarithmiclly diverges at the absorption threshold. The shape of the pump-probe spectrum is governed by the light-induced Kondo temperature, which can be tuned by varying the intensity and frequency of the pump optical field. In the Kondo limit, corresponding to off-resonant pump excitation, the nonlinear absorption spectrum exhibits a narrow peak below the linear absorption onset.

Ultrafast Coulomb-induced dynamics of 2D magnetoexcitons

We study theoretically the ultrafast nonlinear optical response of quantum well excitons in a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that for magnetoexcitons confined to the lowest Landau levels, the third-order four-wave-mixing (FWM) polarization is dominated by the exciton-exciton interaction effects. For repulsive interactions, we identify two regimes in the time-evolution of the optical polarization characterized by exponential and {\em power law} decay of the FWM signal. We describe these regimes by deriving an analytical solution for the memory kernel of the two-exciton wave-function in strong magnetic field. For strong exciton-exciton interactions, the decay of the FWM signal is governed by an antibound resonance with an interaction-dependent decay rate. For weak interactions, the continuum of exciton-exciton scattering states leads to a long tail of the time-integrated FWM signal for negative time delays, which is described by the product of a power law and a logarithmic factor. By combining this analytic solution with numerical calculations, we study the crossover between the exponential and non-exponential regimes as a function of magnetic field. For attractive exciton-exciton interaction, we show that the time-evolution of the FWM signal is dominated by the biexcitonic effects.

Spin correlations in nonlinear optical response: Light-induced Kondo effect

We study the role of spin correlations in nonlinear absorption due to optical transitions from a deep impurity level to states above a Fermi sea. We demonstrate that the Hubbard repulsion between two electrons occupying the impurity state leads to a logarithmic divergence of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility at the absorption threshold. This divergence is a manifestation of the Kondo physics in the nonlinear optical response of Fermi sea systems. Remarkably, the light-induced Kondo temperature, which governs the shape of the Kondo-absorption spectrum, can be tuned by varying the intensity and frequency of the pump optical field. We also show that, for off-resonant pump excitation, the pump-probe spectrum exhibits a narrow peak below the linear absorption onset.

Mesoscopic Cooperative Emission From a Disordered System

We study theoretically the cooperative light emission from a system of $N\gg 1$ classical oscillators confined within a volume with spatial scale, $L$, much smaller than the radiation wavelength, $λ_0=2πc/ω_0$. We assume that the oscillators frequencies are randomly distributed around a central frequency, $ω_0$, with some characteristic width, $Ω\llω_0$. In the absence of disorder, that is $Ω=0$, the cooperative emission spectrum is composed of a narrow subradiant peak superimposed on a wide superradiant band. When $Ω\neq 0$, we demonstrate that if $N$ is large enough, the subradiant peak is not simply broadened by the disorder but rather splits into a system of random narrow peaks. We estimate the spectral width of these peaks as a function of $N, L, Ω$, and $λ_0$. We also estimate the amplitude of this mesoscopic structure in the emission spectrum.

Surface collective excitations in ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy of metal nanoparticles

The role of surface collective excitations in the electron relaxation in small metal particles is studied. It is shown that the dynamically screened electron-electron interaction in a nanoparticle contains a size-dependent correction induced by the surface. This leads to new channels of quasiparticle scattering accompanied by the emission of surface collective excitations. In noble-metal particles, the dipole collective excitations (surface plasmons) mediate a resonant scattering of d-holes to the conduction band. The role of this effect in the ultrafast optical dynamics of small nanoparticles is studied. With decreasing nanoparticle size, it leads to a strong change in the differential absorption lineshape and a strong frequency dependence of the relaxation near the surface plasmon resonance. The experimental implications of these results in ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy are addressed. The size-dependence of conduction electron scattering rates is also discussed.

Many-body Correlation Effects in the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Response of Confined Fermi Seas

The dynamics of electrons and atoms interacting with intense and ultrashort optical pulses presents an important problem in physics that cuts across different materials such as semiconductors and metals. The currently available laser pulses, as short as 5 fs, provide a time resolution shorter than the dephasing and relaxation times in many materials. This allows for a systematic study of many-body effects using nonlinear optical spectroscopy. In this review article, we discuss the role of Coulomb correlations in the ultrafast dynamics of modulation-doped quantum wells and metal nanoparticles. We focus in particular on the manifestations of non-Markovian memory effects induced by strong electron-hole and electron-plasmon correlations.

Electronic Dephasing in the Quantum Hall Regime

By means of degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM), we investigate the quantum coherence of electron-hole pairs in the presence of a two-dimensional electron gas in modulation-doped GaAs-AlGaAs quantum wells in the quantum Hall effect regime. With increasing magnetic field, we observe a crossover from Markovian to non-Markovian behavior, as well as large jumps in the decay time of the FWM signal at even Landau level filling factors. The main observations can be qualitatively reproduced by a model which takes into account scattering by the collective excitations of the two-dimensional electron gas.

Femtosecond Coherent Dynamics of the Fermi Edge Singularity and Exciton Hybrid

We study theoretically the coherent nonlinear optical response of doped semiconductors with partially occupied subbands. When the Fermi energy of an occupied subband approaches the exciton level of an upper subband, the absorption spectrum acquires a characteristic double-peak shape originating from the interference between the Fermi-edge singularity and the exciton resonance. We demonstrate that, for the off-resonant pump excitation, the pump/probe spectrum undergoes a dramatic transformation in the coherent regime, with a strong time-dependent exchange of oscillator strength between Fermi edge singularity and exciton peaks. We show that this effect originates from the many-body electron-hole correlations which determine the dynamical response of the Fermi see. To calculate the nonlinear absorption spectrum, we use the coupled cluster method combined with time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. Possible experimental applications are discussed.

Coherent Ultrafast Optical Dynamics of the Fermi Edge Singularity

We develop a non-equilibrium many-body theory of the coherent femtosecond nonlinear optical response of the Fermi edge singularity. We study the role of the dynamical Fermi sea response in the time-evolution of the pump-probe spectra. The electron-hole correlations are treated nonperturbatively with the time-dependent coupled cluster cxpansion combined with the effective Hamiltonian approach. For short pulse durations, we find a non-exponential decay of the differential transmission during negative time delays, which is governed by the interactions. This is in contrast to the results obtained within the Hartree-Fock approximation, which predicts an exponential decay governed by the dephasing time. We discuss the role of the optically-induced dephasing effects in the coherent regime.

Canonical Transformation Approach to the Ultrafast Non-linear Optical Dynamics of Semiconductors

We develop a theory describing the effects of many-particle Coulomb correlations on the coherent ultrafast nonlinear optical response of semiconductors and metals. Our approach is based on a mapping of the nonlinear optical response of the ``bare'' system onto the linear response of a ``dressed'' system. The latter is characterized by effective time-dependent optical transition matrix elements, electron/hole dispersions, and interaction potentials, which in undoped semiconductors are determined by the single-exciton and two-exciton Green functions in the absence of optical fields. This mapping is achieved by eliminating the optically-induced charge fluctuations from the Hamiltonian using a Van Vleck canonical transformation. It takes into account all many-body contributions up to a given order in the optical fields as well as important Coulomb-induced quantum dynamics to all orders in the optical field. Our approach allows us to distinguish between optical nonlinearities of different origins and provides a physically-intuitive interpretation of their manifestations in ultrafast coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

Size-dependent Correlation Effects in Ultrafast Optical Dynamics of Metal Nanoparticles

We study the role of collective surface excitations in the electron relaxation in small metal particles. We show that the dynamically screened electron-electron interaction in a nanoparticle contains a size-dependent correction induced by the surface. This leads to new channels of quasiparticle scattering accompanied by the emission of surface collective excitations. We calculate the energy and temperature dependence of the corresponding rates, which depend strongly on the nanoparticle size. We show that the surface-plasmon-mediated scattering rate of a conduction electron increases with energy, in contrast to that mediated by a bulk plasmon. In noble-metal particles, we find that the dipole collective excitations (surface plasmons) mediate a resonant scattering of d-holes to the conduction band. We study the role of the latter effect in the ultrafast optical dynamics of small nanoparticles and show that, with decreasing nanoparticle size, it leads to a drastic change in the differential absorption lineshape and a strong frequency dependence of the relaxation near the surface plasmon resonance. The experimental implications of our results in ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy are also discussed.

Size-Dependent Surface Plasmon Dynamics in Metal Nanoparticles

We study the effect of Coulomb correlations on the ultrafast optical dynamics of small metal particles. We demonstrate that a surface-induced dynamical screening of the electron-electron interactions leads to quasiparticle scattering with collective surface excitations. In noble-metal nanoparticles, it results in an interband resonant scattering of d-holes with surface plasmons. We show that this size-dependent many-body effect manifests itself in the differential absorption dynamics for frequencies close to the surface plasmon resonance. In particular, our self-consistent calculations reveal a strong frequency dependence of the relaxation, in agreement with recent femtosecond pump-probe experiments.

Localized states in strong magnetic field: resonant scattering and the Dicke effect

We study the energy spectrum of a system of localized states coupled to a 2D electron gas in strong magnetic field. If the energy levels of localized states are close to the electron energy in the plane, the system exhibits a kind of collective behavior analogous to the Dicke effect in optics. The latter manifests itself in ``trapping'' of electronic states by localized states. At the same time, the electronic density of states develops a gap near the resonance. The gap and the trapping of states appear to be complementary and reflect an intimate relation between the resonant scattering and the Dicke effect. We reveal this relation by presenting the exact solution of the problem for the lowest Landau level. In particular, we show that in the absence of disorder the system undergoes a phase transition at some critical concentration of localized states.

Resonant scattering in a strong magnetic field: exact density of states

We study the structure of 2D electronic states in a strong magnetic field in the presence of a large number of resonant scatterers. For an electron in the lowest Landau level, we derive the exact density of states by mapping the problem onto a zero-dimensional field-theoretical model. We demonstrate that the interplay between resonant and non-resonant scattering leads to a non-analytic energy dependence of the electron Green function. In particular, for strong resonant scattering the density of states develops a gap in a finite energy interval. The shape of the Landau level is shown to be very sensitive to the distribution of resonant scatterers.

Coulomb drag in mesoscopic rings

We develop a Luttinger liquid theory of the Coulomb drag of persistent currents flowing in concentric mesoscopic rings, by incorporating non-linear corrections to the electron dispersion relation. We demonstrate that at low temperatures, interactions between electrons in different rings generate an additional phase and thus alter the period of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. The resulting nondissipative drag depends strongly on the relative parity of the electron numbers. We also show that interactions set a new temperature scale below which the linear response theory does not apply at certain values of external flux.

Exact shape of the lowest Landau level in a double--layer system and a superlattice with uncorrelated disorder

We extend Wegner's exact solution for the 2D density of states at the lowest Landau level with a short--range disorder to the cases of a double--layer system and a superlattice. For the double--layer system, an analytical expression for the density of states, illustrating the interplay between the tunnel splitting of Landau levels and the disorder--induced broadening, is obtained. For the superlattice, we derive an integral equation, the eigenvalue of which determines the exact density of states. By solving this equation numerically, we trace the disappearance of the miniband with increasing disorder.

Far-infrared absorption in parallel quantum wires with weak tunneling

We study collective and single-particle intersubband excitations in a system of quantum wires coupled via weak tunneling. For an isolated wire with parabolic confinement, the Kohn's theorem guarantees that the absorption spectrum represents a single sharp peak centered at the frequency given by the bare confining potential. We show that the effect of weak tunneling between two parabolic quantum wires is twofold: (i) additional peaks corresponding to single-particle excitations appear in the absorption spectrum, and (ii) the main absorption peak acquires a depolarization shift. We also show that the interplay between tunneling and weak perpendicular magnetic field drastically enhances the dispersion of single-particle excitations. The latter leads to a strong damping of the intersubband plasmon for magnetic fields exceeding a critical value.
