Strong coupling treatment of the polaronic system consisting of an impurity in a condensate

The strong coupling treatment of the Fröhlich-type polaronic system, based on a canonical transformation and a standard Landau-Pekar type variational wave function, is applied to the polaronic system consisting of an impurity in a condensate. Within this approach the Relaxed Excited States are retrieved as a typical polaronic feature in the energy spectrum. For these states we calculate the corresponding effective mass and the minimal coupling constant required for them to occur. The present approach allows to derive approximate expressions for the transition energies between different Relaxed Excited States in a much simpler way than with the full Mori-Zwanzig approach, and with a good accuracy, which improves with increasing coupling. The transition energies obtained here can be used as the spectroscopic fingerprint for the experimental observation of Relaxed Excited States of impurities in a condensate.

Measurement of $K^- p$ radiative capture to $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ for $p_{K^-}$ between 514 and 750 MeV/$c$

Differential cross sections for $K^-$ radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ final states, have been measured at eight $K^-$ momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/$c$. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated $K/π$ beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the $γΣ^0$ final state is dominated by hyperonresonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the $γΛ$ final state, on the other hand, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.

Using highly excited baryons to catch the quark mass

Chiral symmetry in QCD can be simultaneously in Wigner and Goldstone modes, depending on the part of the spectrum examined. The transition regime between both, exploiting for example the onset of parity doubling in the high baryon spectrum, can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-IR power-law regime. In passing we also argue that three-quark states naturally group into same-flavor quartets, split into two parity doublets, all splittings decreasing high in the spectrum. We propose that a measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy and see the quark mass running. We test these concepts with the first computation of the spectrum of high-J excited baryons in a chiral-invariant quark model.

Regge-plus-resonance predictions for kaon photoproduction from the neutron

We present predictions for n(gamma,K+)Sigma- differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries and compare them to recent LEPS data. We adapt a Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model developed to describe photoinduced and electroinduced kaon production off protons. The non-resonant contributions to the amplitude are modelled in terms of K+(494) and K*+(892) Regge-trajectory exchange. This amplitude is supplemented with a selection of s-channel resonance diagrams. The three Regge-model parameters of the n(gamma,K+)Sigma- amplitude are derived from the ones fitted to proton data through SU(2) isospin considerations. A fair description of the n(gamma,K+)Sigma- data is realized, which demonstrates the Regge model's robustness and predictive power. Conversion of the resonances' couplings from the proton to the neutron is more challenging, as it requires knowledge of the photocoupling helicity amplitudes. We illustrate how the uncertainties of the helicity amplitudes propagate and heavily restrain the predictive power of the RPR and isobar models for kaon production off neutron targets.

Probing the infrared quark mass from highly excited baryons

We argue that three-quark excited states naturally group into quartets, split into two parity doublets, and that the mass splittings between these parity partners decrease higher up in the baryon spectrum. This decreasing mass difference can be used to probe the running quark mass in the mid-infrared power-law regime. A measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta* resonances should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy. We test this concept with the first computation of excited high-j baryon masses in a chirally invariant quark model.

Generalized parton distributions of pseudoscalar mesons in a covariant constituent quark model

The isoscalar twist-two generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the pion and the kaon are calculated in a Poincare covariant Bethe-Salpeter constituent quark model. Results are presented for several values of the parameters xi and t. The results satisfy the form factor constraints and the polynomiality condition. For the pion GPD, also the isospin symmetry constraint is fulfilled. The influence of kinematical variables and model parameters on the support of the GPDs is investigated. To this end, the strength parameters and quark masses of the constituent quark model are artificially varied.

Support of generalized parton distributions in Bethe-Salpeter models of hadrons

The proper support of generalized parton distributions from relativistic constituent quark models with pointlike constituents is studied. The correct support is guaranteed when the vertex function does not depend on the relative minus-momentum. We show that including quark interactions in models with pointlike constituent quarks might lead to a support problem. A computation of the magnitude of the support problem in the Bonn relativistic constituent quark model is presented.

Electroproduction of kaons from the proton in a Regge-plus-resonance approach

We present a Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) description of the p(e,e'K^+)Y processes (Y=Λ,Σ^0) in the resonance region. The background contributions to the RPR amplitude are constrained by the high-energy p(γ, K^+)Y data. As a result, the number of free model parameters in the resonance region is considerably reduced compared to typical effective-Lagrangian approaches. We compare a selection of RPR model variants, originally constructed to describe $KY$ photoproduction, with the world electroproduction database. The electromagnetic form factors of the intermediate N^*s and $Δ^*s are computed in the Bonn constituent-quark model. With this input, we find a reasonable description of the p(e,e'K^+)Y data without adding or readjusting any parameters. It is demonstrated that the electroproduction response functions are extremely useful for fine-tuning both the background and resonant contributions to the reaction dynamics.

Regge-plus-resonance treatment of the p(gamma,K^+)Sigma^0 and p(gamma,K^0)Sigma^+ reactions at forward kaon angles

An effective-Lagrangian framework for K Sigma photoproduction from the proton is presented. The proposed model is applicable at forward kaon angles and photon lab energies from threshold up to 16 GeV. The high-energy part of the p(gamma,K^+)Sigma^0 and p(gamma,K^0)Sigma^+ amplitudes is expressed in terms of Regge-trajectory exchange in the t channel. By supplementing this Regge background with a number of s-channel resonances, the model is extended towards the resonance region. The resulting ``Regge-plus-resonance'' (RPR) approach has the advantage that the background contributions involve only a few parameters, which can be largely constrained by the high-energy data. This work compares various implementations of the RPR model, and explores which resonance contributions are required to fit the data presently at hand. It is demonstrated that, through the inclusion of one K and two K* trajectories, the RPR framework provides an efficient and unified description of the K^+ Sigma^0 and K^0 Sigma^+ photoproduction channels over an extensive energy range.

Electromagnetic KY production from the proton in a Regge-plus-resonance approach

A Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) description of the p(γ,K)Y and p(e,e'K)Y processes (Y = Λ, Σ^{0,+}) is presented. The proposed reaction amplitude consists of Regge-trajectory exchanges in the t channel, supplemented with a limited selection of s-channel resonance diagrams. The RPR framework contains a considerably smaller number of free parameters than a typical effective-Lagrangian model. Nevertheless, it provides an acceptable overall description of the photo- and electroproduction observables over an extensive photon energy range. It is shown that the electroproduction response functions and polarization observables are particularly useful for fine-tuning both the background and resonance parameters.

Forward-angle K+ Lambda photoproduction in a Regge-plus-resonance approach

We present an effective-Lagrangian description for forward-angle K+ Lambda photoproduction from the proton, valid for photon lab energies from threshold up to 16 GeV. The high-energy part of the amplitude is modeled in terms of t-channel Regge-trajectory exchange. The sensitivity of the calculated observables to the Regge-trajectory phase is investigated in detail. The model is extended towards the resonance region by adding a number of s-channel resonances to the t-channel background. The proposed hybrid ``Regge-plus-resonance'' (RPR) approach allows one to exploit the p(gamma,K+)Lambda data in their entirety, resulting in stronger constraints on both the background and resonance couplings. The high-energy data can be used to fix the background contributions, leaving the resonance couplings as the sole free parameters in the resonance region. We compare various implementations of the RPR model, and explore to what extent the description of the data can be improved by introducing the ``new'' resonances D13(1900) and P11(1900). Despite its limited number of free parameters, the proposed RPR approach provides an efficient description of the p(gamma,K+)Lambda dynamics in and beyond the resonance region.

Electromagnetic form factors of hyperons in a relativistic quark model

The relativistically covariant constituent quark model developed by the Bonn group is used to compute the EM form factors of strange baryons. We present form-factor results for the ground-state and some excited hyperons. The computed magnetic moments agree well with the experimental values and the magnetic form factors follow a dipole $Q^2$ dependence.

Electric and magnetic form factors of strange baryons

Predictions for the electromagnetic form factors of the Lambda$, Sigma and Xi hyperons are presented. The numerical calculations are performed within the framework of the fully relativistic constituent-quark model developed by the Bonn group. The computed magnetic moments compare favorably with the experimentally known values. Most magnetic form factors G_M(Q^2) can be parametrized in terms of a dipole with cutoff masses ranging from 0.79 to 1.14 GeV.

Relativistic formulation of Glauber theory for A(e,e'p) reactions

At sufficiently large proton energies, Glauber multiple-scattering theory offers good opportunities for describing the final state interactions in electro-induced proton emission off nuclear targets. A fully unfactorized relativistic formulation of Glauber multiple-scattering theory is presented. The effect of truncating the Glauber multiple-scattering series is discussed. Relativistic effects in the description of the final-state interactions are found not to exceed the few percent level. Also the frequently adopted approximation of replacing the wave functions for the individual scattering nucleons by some average density, is observed to have a minor impact on the results. Predictions for the separated $^4$He$(e,e'p)$ response functions are given in quasi-elastic kinematics and a domain corresponding with $1 \leq Q^2 \leq 2$ (GeV)$^2$.

Constraints on background contributions from K+ Lambda electroproduction

Results for response functions for kaon electroproduction on the proton are presented. A tree-level hadrodynamical model is adopted and it is shown that some of the electroproduction response functions are particularly powerful with the eye on gaining control over the parameterization of the background diagrams. The existing data set for the p(e,e'K+)Lambda reaction appears to rule out the use of a g_{K+ Lambda p} coupling constant beyond the boundaries of softly broken SU(3) flavor symmetry. Also the use of soft hadronic form factors, which has been proposed as a valid alternative for a hadrodynamical description of the p(gamma,K+)Lambda data in the resonance region, seems to be disfavored by the magnitude of the measured p(e,e'K+)Lambda cross sections.

Sigma photoproduction in the resonance region

A study of p(gamma,K)Sigma processes in an isobar model at tree level is reported. By comparing model calculations to the published SAPHIR data, we explore the possible role of different isospin I=1/2 (N*) and I=3/2 (Delta*) resonances in the reaction dynamics. In our analysis, the inclusion of the ``missing'' D_{13}(1895) resonance does only slightly improve the global description of the Sigma photoproduction data. More convincing signals for the presence of such a ``missing'' resonance emerged in the analysis of the isospin related p(gamma,K+)Lambda reaction. Various implementations of the nonresonant part of the Sigma photoproduction amplitude are presented. The sensitivity of the computed observables and extracted resonance parameters to the uncertainties inherent to the treatment of the nonresonant (background) diagrams are discussed.

Bridging Two Ways of Describing Final-State Interactions in A(e,e'p) Reactions

We outline a relativistic and unfactorized framework to treat the final-state interactions in quasi-elastic A(e,e'p) reactions for four-momentum transfers Q$^{2} \gtrsim 0.3$ (GeV/c)$^{2}$. The model, which relies on the eikonal approximation, can be used in combination with optical potentials, as well as with the Glauber multiple-scattering method. We argue that such a model can bridge the gap between a typical ``low'' and ``high-energy'' description of final-state interactions, in a reasonably smooth fashion. This argument is made on the basis of calculated structure functions, polarization observables and nuclear transparencies for the target nuclei $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O.

Kaon photoproduction: background contributions, form factors and missing resonances

The photoproduction p(gamma, K+)Lambda process is studied within a field-theoretic approach. It is shown that the background contributions constitute an important part of the reaction dynamics. We compare predictions obtained with three plausible techniques for dealing with these background contributions. It appears that the extracted resonance parameters drastically depend on the applied technique. We investigate the implications of the corrections to the functional form of the hadronic form factor in the contact term, recently suggested by Davidson and Workman (Phys. Rev. C 63, 025210). The role of background contributions and hadronic form factors for the identification of the quantum numbers of ``missing'' resonances is discussed.
