Stability of Axion-Saxion wormholes

We reconsider the perturbative stability of Euclidean axion wormholes. The quadratic action that governs linear perturbations is derived directly in Euclidean gravity. We demonstrate explicitly that a stability analysis in which one treats the axion as a normal two-form gauge field is equivalent to one performed in the Hodge-dual formulation, where one considers the axion as a scalar with a wrong-sign kinetic term. Both analyses indicate that axion wormholes are perturbatively stable, even in the presence of a massless dilaton, or saxion, field that couples to the axion.

Instantons and no wormholes in $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$

We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualities, lift to Euclidean strings wrapping 2-cycles in the CY$_2$. The dual of these instantons are expected to be worldsheet instantons of the D1-D5 CFT.

A higher-dimensional view on quantum cosmology

We argue that the choice of boundary condition for the wave function in quantum cosmology depends on the UV completion of general relativity. We provide an explicit example using a braneworld scenario in which a de Sitter cosmology is induced on the surface of a Coleman-de Luccia bubble in a 5-dimensional AdS space. The corresponding boundary conditions are unambigously fixed by demanding consistency with the known physics of bubble nucleation and this selects the Vilenkin weighting for the amplitude from a 4D viewpoint.

A 10d view on the KKLT AdS vacuum and uplifting

We analyse the ten-dimensional Einstein equations in the KKLT setting. We verify that the quartic gaugino term is needed to remove singularities in the on-shell action as suggested by Hamada et. al. We contrast two approaches that have been taken in the literature when employing the effect of gaugino condensation in the ten-dimensional equations of motion. Here we follow the proposal to insert explicit non-zero fermion bilinar vev into the localised energy-momentum tensor of the 7-branes obtained from varying the 10d on-shell action with respect to the 10d metric. Our procedure is common in semi-classical physics and is manifestly local in 10d. However, it does not lead to the KKLT effective field theory. The alternative procedure of deriving the energy momentum tensor after replacing fermion bilinears by the gaugino vev, might be less well motivated in 10d, but reproduces the results of the KKLT effective field theory.

The holographic dual to supergravity instantons in $\rm AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$

We investigate the holographic dual to supergravity instanton solutions in $\rm AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which are described entirely in terms of geodesics on the AdS moduli space. These instantons are expected to be holographically dual to instantons in an $\mathcal{N}=2$ necklace quiver gauge theory in four dimensions with $k$ gauge nodes, at large N. For the supersymmetric instantons we find a precise match between the on-shell actions and the vevs of $\text{Tr}[F^2]$ and $\text{Tr}[F\wedge F]$ computed on both sides of the duality. This correspondence requires an exact identification between the massless supergravity scalars and the dual gauge couplings which we give in detail. We also find a candidate for the supergravity dual of a quasi-instanton in the quiver theory, which is a non-supersymmetric extremal solution.

Anti-brane singularities as red herrings

Unphysical 3-form flux singularities near anti-branes have been argued to get resolved in the classical supergravity regime when brane polarisation is properly taken into account. The only example that does not seem to fit this logic is the $\bar{\text{D6}}$-brane because of a no-go theorem for well behaved supergravity solutions with negative D6 charge. In this paper we first review the existing results demonstrating how brane polarisation resolves singularities for $\bar{\text{D3}}$-branes and then we improve on the description of the polarisation of $\bar{\text{D6}}$-branes into KK5 dipoles. We argue that the meta-stable state carries exactly zero (anti-)D6 charge, which is the unique way around the no-go theorem. We then provide numerical evidence for well-behaved solutions that describe such meta-stable states.

The tension between 10D supergravity and dS uplifts

We elaborate on the recent work of Moritz et. al. where it is argued that anti-brane uplifting in KKLT models never leads to dS vacua. This is due to flattening effects in the effective potential found when treating the gaugino condensate energy momentum in ten-dimensional supergravity. We point out that the Silverstein-Saltman uplift, which effectively dissolves the anti-brane in 3-form fluxes, is a conceptually simpler setting in which flattening effects can be present, without requiring assumptions about UV/IR mixings. Along the way we revise and improve on the arguments of Moritz et. al. and discuss various subleties when studying gaugino condensates from a ten-dimensional point-of-view. In particular, the "no dS" argument is slightly weaker and we emphasize a technical loophole that might allow dS vacua. Finally we suggest that AdS vacua which are parametrically controlled from these flattening effects belong to the Swampland. We comment on the relation with the recent refined dS Swampland inequalities.

Generating Geodesic Flows and Supergravity Solutions

We consider the geodesic motion on the symmetric moduli spaces that arise after timelike and spacelike reductions of supergravity theories. The geodesics correspond to timelike respectively spacelike $p$-brane solutions when they are lifted over a $p$-dimensional flat space. In particular, we consider the problem of constructing \emph{the minimal generating solution}: A geodesic with the minimal number of free parameters such that all other geodesics are generated through isometries. We give an intrinsic characterization of this solution in a wide class of orbits for various supergravities in different dimensions. We apply our method to three cases: (i) Einstein vacuum solutions, (ii) extreme and non-extreme D=4 black holes in N=8 supergravity and their relation to N=2 STU black holes and (iii) Euclidean wormholes in $D\geq 3$. In case (iii) we present an easy and general criterium for the existence of regular wormholes for a given scalar coset.

Unstoppable brane-flux decay of $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes

We investigate $p$ $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes inside a flux throat that carries $K \times M$ D6 charges with $K$ the 3-form flux quantum and $M$ the Romans mass. We find that within the calculable supergravity regime where $g_s p$ is large, the $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes annihilate immediately against the fluxes despite the existence of a metastable state at small $p/M$ in the probe approximation. The crucial property that causes this naive conflict with effective field theory is a singularity in the 3-form flux, which we cut off at string scale. Our result explains the absence of regular solutions at finite temperature and suggests there should be a smooth time-dependent solution. We also discuss the qualitative differences between $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes and $\overline{\text{D3}}$ branes, which makes it a priori not obvious to conclude the same instability for $\overline{\text{D3}}$ branes.

Remarks on scale separation in flux vacua

We argue that the Maldacena-Nunez no-go theorem excluding Minkowski and de Sitter vacua in flux compactifications can be extended to exclude anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua for which the Kaluza-Klein scale is parametrically smaller than the AdS length scale. As a practical application of this observation we demonstrate that the mechanism to resolve O6 singularities in massive type IIA at the classical level is likely not to occur in AdS compactifications with scale separation. We furthermore remark that a compactification to four observable dimensions implies a large cosmological hierarchy.

Domain walls inside localised orientifolds

The equations of motion of toroidal orientifold compactifications with fluxes are in one-to-one correspondence with gauged supergravity if the orientifold (and D-brane) sources are smeared over the compact space. This smeared limit is identical to the approximation that ignores warping. It is therefore relevant to compare quantities obtained from the gauged supergravity with the true 10d solution with localised sources. In this paper we find the correspondence between BPS domain walls in gauged SUGRA and 10D SUGRA with localised sources. Our model is the simplest orientifold with fluxes we are aware of: an O6/D6 compactification on T^3/Z_2 in massive IIA with H_3-flux. The BPS domain walls correspond to a O6/D6/NS5/D8 bound state. Our analysis reveals that the domain wall energy computed in gauged SUGRA is unaffected by the localisation of the O6/D6 sources.

Localised anti-branes in non-compact throats at zero and finite T

We investigate the 3-form singularities that are typical to anti-brane solutions in supergravity and check whether they can be cloaked by a finite temperature horizon. For anti-D3-branes in the Klebanov-Strassler background, this was already shown numerically to be impossible when the branes are partially smeared. In this paper, we present analytic arguments that also localised branes remain with singular 3-form fluxes at both zero and finite temperature. These results may have important, possibly fatal, consequences for constructions of meta-stable de Sitter vacua through uplifting.

Fractional branes, warped compactifications and backreacted orientifold planes

The standard extremal p-brane solutions in supergravity are known to allow for a generalisation which consists of adding a linear dependence on the world-volume coordinates to the usual harmonic function. In this note we demonstrate that remarkably this generalisation goes through in exactly the same way for p-branes with fluxes added to it that correspond to fractional p-branes. We relate this to warped orientifold compactifications by trading the Dp-branes for Op-planes that solve the RR tadpole condition. This allows us to interpret the worldvolume dependence as due to lower-dimensional scalars that flow along the massless directions in the no-scale potential. Depending on the details of the fluxes these flows can be supersymmetric domain wall flows. Our solutions provide explicit examples of backreacted orientifold planes in compactifications with non-constant moduli.

AdS vacua with scale separation from IIB supergravity

Only two kinds of compactification are known that lead to four-dimensional supersymmetric AdS vacua with moduli stabilisation and separation of scales at tree-level. The most studied ones are compactifications of massive IIA supergravity on SU(3) structures with smeared O6 planes, for which a general ten-dimensional expression for the solution in terms of the SU(3) structure was found. Less studied are compactifications of IIB supergravity with smeared O5/O7 planes. In this paper we derive a general ten-dimensional expression for the smeared O5/O7 solutions in terms of SU(2) structures. For a specific choice of orientifold projections, we recover the known examples and we also provide new explicit solutions.

Antibranes don't go black

When D-branes are inserted in flux backgrounds of opposite charge, the resulting solution has a certain singularity in the fluxes. Recently it has been argued, using numerical solutions, that for anti-D3 branes in the Klebanov-Strassler background these singularities cannot be cloaked by a horizon, which strongly suggests they are not physical. In this note we provide an analytic proof that the singularity of all codimension-three antibrane solutions (such as anti-D6 branes in massive type IIA supergravity or anti-D3 branes smeared on the T^3 of R^3xT^3 with fluxes) cannot be hidden behind a horizon, and that the charge of black branes with smooth event horizons must have the same sign as the charge of the flux background. Our result indicates that infinitesimally blackening the antibranes immediately triggers brane-flux annihilation, and strengthens the intuition that antibranes placed in flux with positive charge immediately annihilate against it.

Brane solutions and integrability: a status report

We review the status of the integrability and solvability of the geodesics equations of motion on symmetric coset spaces that appear as sigma models of supergravity theories when reduced over respectively the timelike and spacelike direction. Such geodesic curves describe respectively timelike and spacelike brane solutions. We emphasize the applications to black holes.

Black holes in supergravity and integrability

Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

The full integration of black hole solutions to symmetric supergravity theories

We prove that all stationary and spherical symmetric black hole solutions to theories with symmetric target spaces are integrable and we provide an explicit integration method. This exact integration is based on the description of black hole solutions as geodesic curves on the moduli space of the theory when reduced over the time-like direction. These geodesic equations of motion can be rewritten as a specific Lax pair equation for which mathematicians have provided the integration algorithms when the initial conditions are described by a diagonalizable Lax matrix. On the other hand, solutions described by nilpotent Lax matrices, which originate from extremal regular (small) D = 4 black holes can be obtained as suitable limits of solutions obtained in the diagonalizable case, as we show on the generating geodesic (i.e. most general geodesic modulo global symmetries of the D = 3 model) corresponding to regular (and small) D = 4 black holes. As a byproduct of our analysis we give the explicit form of the Wick rotation connecting the orbits of BPS and non-BPS solutions in maximally supersymmetric supergravity and its STU truncation.
