Fractional magnetization plateaux of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice: effect of quantum XY interdimer coupling

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice is considered within the many-body perturbation theory developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the Heisenberg intradimer and Ising interdimer interactions. The former model is widely used for a description of magnetic properties of the layered compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, which exhibits a series of fractional magnetization plateaux at sufficiently low temperatures. Using the novel type of many-body perturbation theory we have found the effective model of interacting triplet excitations with the extended hard-core repulsion, which accurately recovers 1/8, 1/6 and 1/4 magnetization plateaux for moderate values of the interdimer coupling. A possible existence of a striking quantum phase of bound triplons is also revealed at low enough magnetic fields.

Frustrated magnetism of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains as a statistical-mechanical monomer-dimer problem

It is evidenced that effective lattice-gas models of hard-core monomers and dimers afford a proper description of low-temperature features of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains. Besides monomeric particles assigned within the localized-magnon theory to bound one- and two-magnon eigenstates, the effective monomer-dimer lattice-gas model additionally includes dimeric particles assigned to a singlet-tetramer (singlet-hexamer) state as a cornerstone of dimer-tetramer (tetramer-hexamer) ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond (octahedral) chain. A feasibility of the effective description is confirmed through the exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos methods. Both quantum spin chains display rich ground-state phase diagrams including discontinuous as well as continuous field-driven phase transitions, whereby the specific heat shows in vicinity of the former phase transitions an extraordinary low-temperature peak coming from a highly-degenerate manifold of low-lying excitations.

Insights into nature of a magnetization plateau of 3$d$-4$f$ coordination polymer [Dy$_2$Cu$_2$]$_n$ from a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain

The ground state and magnetization process of an exactly solved spin-$1/2$ Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with two different gyromagnetic factors of the Ising and Heisenberg spins are investigated in detail. It is shown that the investigated quantum spin chain exhibits up to seven possible ground states depending on a mutual interplay of the magnetic field, intra- and inter-dimer coupling constants. More specifically, the frustrated and modulated quantum antiferromagnetic phases are responsible in zero-temperature magnetization curves for a zero magnetization plateau. The intermediate 1/11- and 5/11-plateaus emerge due to the frustrated and modulated quantum ferrimagnetic phases, while the intermediate 9/11- and 10/11-plateaus can be attributed to the quantum and classical ferrimagnetic phases. It is conjectured that the magnetization plateau experimentally observed in a high-field magnetization curve of 3$d$-4$f$ heterobimetallic coordination polymer [\{Dy(hfac)$_2$(CH$_3$OH)\}$_2$\{Cu(dmg)(Hdmg)\}$_2$]$_n$ (H$_2$dmg $=$ dimethylglyoxime; Hhfac $=$ 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) could be attributed to the classical and quantum ferrimagnetic phases.

Magnetization plateaus and bipartite entanglement of an exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain

Spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain composed of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg dimers is exactly solved in a presence of the magnetic field by the transfer-matrix method. It is shown that the ground-state phase diagram involves in total six different phases. Besides the ferromagnetic phase with fully polarized spins one encounters the singlet antiferromagnetic and modulated antiferromagnetic phases manifested in zero-temperature magnetization curves as zero magnetization plateau, the frustrated ferrimagnetic and singlet ferrimagnetic phases causing existence of an intermediate one-half magnetization plateau, and finally, the intriguing modulated ferrimagnetic phase with a translationally broken symmetry leading to an unconventional one-quarter magnetization plateau. The quantum character of individual ground states is quantified via the concurrence, which measures a strength of the bipartite entanglement within the pure and mixed states of the Heisenberg dimers at zero as well as nonzero temperatures. The parameter region, where the bipartite entanglement may be in contrast to general expectations reinforced upon increasing of temperature and/or magnetic field, is elucidated.

Low-temperature thermodynamics of spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with Ising and Heisenberg interactions

We consider an exactly solvable version of the quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings. The investigated quantum spin system exhibits at zero temperature fractional plateaux at 1/4 and 1/2 of the saturation magnetization and it has a highly degenerate ground state at critical fields where the magnetization jumps. We study the field dependence of the specific heat at low temperature. The lattice-gas description is formulated in a vicinity of critical fields to explain the low-temperature behaviour of specific heat.

Ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising two-leg ladder with XYZ intra-rung coupling

The quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with an anisotropic XYZ Heisenberg intra-rung interaction and Ising inter-rung interactions is treated by means of a rigorous approach based on the unitary transformation. The particular case of the considered model with X-X intra-rung interaction resembles a quantum compass ladder with additional frustrating diagonal Ising interactions. Using an appropriately chosen unitary transformation, the model under investigation may be reduced to a transverse Ising chain with composite spins, and one may subsequently find the ground state quite rigorously. We obtain a ground-state phase diagram and analyze the interplay of the competition between several factors: the XYZ anisotropy in the Heisenberg intra-rung coupling, the Ising interaction along the legs, and the frustrating diagonal Ising interaction. The investigated model shows extraordinarily diverse ground-state phase diagrams including several unusual quantum ordered phases, two different disordered quantum paramagnetic phases, as well as discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions between those phases.

The effects of the symmetric and antisymmetric anisotropies on the dynamics of the spin-1/2 XY chain

The dynamic properties of the spin-1/2 anisotropic XY chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in a transverse field are investigated. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the dynamic structure factors of the model are evaluated rigorously (partially analytically and partially numerically). The effects of the DM interaction on the frequency shapes of the dynamic structure factors are discussed.

Jordan-Wigner approach to the frustrated spin one-half XXZ chain

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study the ground state properties and dimerization transition in the $J_1-J_2$ $XXZ$ chain. We consider different solutions of the mean-field approximation for the transformed Hamiltonian. Ground state energy and the static structure factor are compared with complementary exact diagonalization and good agreement is found near the limit of the Majumdar-Ghosh model. Furthermore, the ground state phase diagram is discussed within the mean-field theory. In particular, we show that an incommensurate ground state is absent for large $J_2$ in a fully self-consistent mean-field analysis.
