Response to 'Burden of proof: A comprehensive review of the feasibility of 100% renewable-electricity systems'

A recent article 'Burden of proof: A comprehensive review of the feasibility of 100% renewable-electricity systems' claims that many studies of 100% renewable electricity systems do not demonstrate sufficient technical feasibility, according to the criteria of the article's authors (henceforth 'the authors'). Here we analyse the authors' methodology and find it problematic. The feasibility criteria chosen by the authors are important, but are also easily addressed at low economic cost, while not affecting the main conclusions of the reviewed studies and certainly not affecting their technical feasibility. A more thorough review reveals that all of the issues have already been addressed in the engineering and modelling literature. Nuclear power, which the authors have evaluated positively elsewhere, faces other, genuine feasibility problems, such as the finiteness of uranium resources and a reliance on unproven technologies in the medium- to long-term. Energy systems based on renewables, on the other hand, are not only feasible, but already economically viable and decreasing in cost every year.

Complex matrix model duality

The same complex matrix model calculates both tachyon scattering for the c=1 non-critical string at the self-dual radius and certain correlation functions of half-BPS operators in N=4 super-Yang-Mills. It is dual to another complex matrix model where the couplings of the first model are encoded in the Kontsevich-like variables of the second. The duality between the theories is mirrored by the duality of their Feynman diagrams. Analogously to the Hermitian Kontsevich-Penner model, the correlation functions of the second model can be written as sums over discrete points in subspaces of the moduli space of punctured Riemann surfaces.

Cut-and-join operators and N=4 super Yang-Mills

We show which multi-trace structures are compatible with the symmetrisation of local operators in \cN=4 super Yang-Mills when they are organised into representations of the global symmetry group. Cut-and-join operators give the non-planar expansion of correlation functions of these operators in the free theory. Using these techniques we find the 1/N corrections to the quarter-BPS operators which remain protected at weak coupling. We also present a new way of counting these chiral ring operators using the Weyl group S_N.

Diagonal free field matrix correlators, global symmetries and giant gravitons

We obtain a basis of diagonal free field multi-matrix 2-point correlators in a theory with global symmetry group G. The operators fall into irreducible representations of G. This applies for gauge group U(N) at finite N. For composites made of n fundamental fields, this is expressed in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the decomposition of the n-fold tensor products of the fundamental field representation in terms of G \times S_n representations. We use this general construction in the case of the SL(2) sector of \cN=4 SYM. In this case, by using oscillator constructions, we reduce the computation of the relevant Clebsch-Gordans coupling infinite dimensional discrete series irreps of SL(2) to a problem in symmetric groups. Applying these constructions we write down gauge invariant operators with a Fock space structure similar to that arising in a large angular momentum limit of worldvolume excitations of giant gravitons. The Fock space structure emerges from Clebsch multiplicities of tensor products of symmetric group representations. We also give the action of the 1-loop dilatation operator of \cN=4 SYM on this basis of multi-matrix operators.

Permutations and the Loop

We consider the one-loop two-point function for multi-trace operators in the U(2) sector of \cN=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills at finite N. We derive an expression for it in terms of U(N) and S_{n+1} group theory data, where n is the length of the operators. The Clebsch-Gordan operators constructed in 0711.0176, which are diagonal at tree level, only mix at one loop if you can reach the same (n+1)-box Young diagram by adding a single box to each of the n-box Young diagrams of their U(N) representations (which organise their multi-trace structure). Similar results are expected for higher loops and for other sectors of the global symmetry group.

Half-BPS SU(N) Correlators in N=4 SYM

In this note we study half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills for gauge group SU(N) at finite N. In particular we elaborate on the results of hep-th/0410236, providing an exact formula for the null basis operators algorithmically constructed there. For gauge groups U(N) and SU(N) we show that this basis is dual to the basis of multi-trace operators with respect to the two point function. We use this to extend the results of hep-th/0611290 concerning factorisation and probabilities from U(N) to SU(N). We also give a construction for a separate diagonal basis of the SU(N) operators in terms of the higher Hamiltonians of the complex matrix model reduction of this sector.

Diagonal multi-matrix correlators and BPS operators in N=4 SYM

We present a complete basis of multi-trace multi-matrix operators that has a diagonal two point function for the free matrix field theory at finite N. This generalises to multiple matrices the single matrix diagonalisation by Schur polynomials. Crucially, it involves intertwining the gauge group U(N) and the global symmetry group U(M) with Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of symmetric groups S_n. When applied to N=4 super Yang-Mills we consider the U(3) subgroup of the full symmetry group. The diagonalisation allows the description of a dual basis to multi-traces, which permits the characterisation of the metric on operators transforming in short representations at weak coupling. This gives a framework for the comparison of quarter and eighth-BPS giant gravitons of AdS_5 x S^5 spacetime to gauge invariant operators of the dual N=4 SYM.
