Meson-exchange currents and final-state interactions in quasielastic electron scattering at high momentum transfers

The effects of meson-exchange currents (MEC) are computed for the one-particle one-hole transverse response function for finite nuclei at high momentum transfers $q$ in the region of the quasielastic peak. A semi-relativistic shell model is used for the one-particle-emission $(e,e')$ reaction. Relativistic effects are included using relativistic kinematics, performing a semi-relativistic expansion of the current operators and using the Dirac-equation-based (DEB) form of the relativistic mean field potential for the final states. It is found that final-state interactions (FSI) produce an important enhancement of the MEC in the high-energy tail of the response function for $q\geq 1$ GeV/c. The combined effect of MEC and FSI goes away when other models of the FSI, not based on the DEB potential, are employed.

A simple model for NN correlations in quasielastic lepton-nucleus scattering

We present a covariant extension of the relativistic Fermi gas model which incorporates correlation effects in nuclei. Within this model, inspired by the BCS descriptions of systems of fermions, we obtain the nuclear spectral function and from it the superscaling function for use in treating high-energy quasielastic electroweak processes. Interestingly, this model has the capability to yield the asymmetric tail seen in the experimental scaling function.

A Model for BCS-Type Correlations in Superscaling

Using ideas from BCS descriptions of systems of fermions, a covariant extension of the relativistic Fermi gas model is presented as a way to incorporate correlation effects in nuclei. The model is developed for the BCS nuclear ground state and for final states consisting of a single plane-wave nucleon plus a BCS recoiling daughter nucleus. The nuclear spectral function is obtained and from it the superscaling function for use in treating high-energy quasielastic electroweak processes. Interestingly, this model has the capability to yield the asymmetric tail seen in the experimental scaling function.

Final-State Interactions in the Superscaling Analysis of Neutral-Current Quasielastic Neutrino Scattering

Effects of strong final-state interactions in the superscaling properties of neutral-current quasielastic neutrino cross sections are investigated using the Relativistic Impulse Approximation as guidance. First- and second-kind scaling are analyzed for neutrino beam energies ranging from 1 to 2 GeV for the cases of 12C, 16O and 40Ca. Different detection angles of the outgoing nucleon are considered in order to sample various nucleon energy regimes. Scaling of the second kind is shown to be very robust. Validity of first-kind scaling is found to be linked to the kinematics of the process. Superscaling still prevails even in the presence of very strong final-state interactions, provided that some kinematical restrains are kept, and the conditions under which superscaling can be applied to predict neutral-current quasielastic neutrino scattering are determined.

The Charge Form Factor of the Neutron at Low Momentum Transfer from the $^{2}\vec{\rm H}(\vec{\rm e},{\rm e}'{\rm n}){\rm p}$ Reaction

We report new measurements of the neutron charge form factor at low momentum transfer using quasielastic electrodisintegration of the deuteron. Longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 850 MeV were scattered from an isotopically pure, highly polarized deuterium gas target. The scattered electrons and coincident neutrons were measured by the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) detector. The neutron form factor ratio $G^{n}_{E}/G^{n}_{M}$ was extracted from the beam-target vector asymmetry $A_{ed}^{V}$ at four-momentum transfers $Q^{2}=0.14$, 0.20, 0.29 and 0.42 (GeV/c)$^{2}$.

Superscaling Predictions for Neutral Current Quasielastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

The application of superscaling ideas to predict neutral-current (NC) quasielastic (QE) neutrino cross sections is investigated. Results obtained within the relativistic impulse approximation (RIA) using the same relativistic mean field potential (RMF) for both initial and final nucleons -- a model that reproduces the experimental (e,e') scaling function -- are used to illustrate the ideas involved. While NC reactions are not so well suited for scaling analyses, to a large extent the RIA-RMF predictions do exhibit superscaling. Independence of the scaled response on the nuclear species is very well fulfilled. The RIA-RMF NC superscaling function is in good agreement with the experimental (e,e') one. The idea that electroweak processes can be described with a universal scaling function, provided that mild restrictions on the kinematics are assumed, is shown to be valid.

Quasielastic Charged Current Neutrino-nucleus Scattering

We provide integrated cross sections for quasielastic charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering. Results evaluated using the phenomenological scaling function extracted from the analysis of experimental $(e,e')$ data are compared with those obtained within the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation. We show that very reasonable agreement is reached when a description of final-state interactions based on the relativistic mean field is included. This is consistent with previous studies of differential cross sections which are in accord with the universality property of the superscaling function.

Scaling and isospin effects in quasielastic lepton-nucleus scattering in the Relativistic Mean Field Approach

The role of isospin in quasielastic electron scattering and charge-changing neutrino reactions is investigated in the relativistic impulse approximation. We analyze proton and neutron scaling functions making use of various theoretical descriptions for the final-state interactions, focusing on the effects introduced by the presence of strong scalar and vector terms in the relativistic mean field approach. An explanation for the differences observed in the scaling functions evaluated from $(e,e')$ and $(ν,μ)$ reactions is provided by invoking the differences in isoscalar and isovector contributions.

Final-state interactions and superscaling in the semi-relativistic approach to quasielastic electron and neutrino scattering

The semi-relativistic approach to electron and neutrino quasielastic scattering from nuclei is extended to include final-state interactions. Starting with the usual non-relativistic continuum shell model, the problem is relativized by using the semi-relativistic expansion of the current in powers of the initial nucleon momentum and relativistic kinematics. Two different approaches are considered for the final-state interactions: the Smith-Wambach 2p-2h damping model and the Dirac-equation-based potential extracted from a relativistic mean-field plus the Darwin factor. Using the latter the scaling properties of $(e,e')$ and $(ν_μ,μ^-)$ cross sections for intermediate momentum transfers are investigated.

Superscaling in lepton-nucleus scattering

We suggest that superscaling analyses of few-GeV inclusive electron scattering from nuclei, both in the quasielastic peak and in the region where the $Δ$-excitation dominates, allow one to make reliable predictions for charge-changing neutrino reactions at energies of a few GeV, relevant for neutrino oscillation experiments.

Measurement of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio from \vec ^1H(\vec e, e'p)

We report the first precision measurement of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio from spin-dependent elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized hydrogen internal gas target. The measurement was performed at the MIT-Bates South Hall Ring over a range of four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ from 0.15 to 0.65 (GeV/c)$^2$. Significantly improved results on the proton electric and magnetic form factors are obtained in combination with previous cross-section data on elastic electron-proton scattering in the same $Q^2$ region.

Superscaling and neutral current quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering

The superscaling approach is applied to studies of neutral current neutrino reactions in the quasielastic regime. Using input from scaling analyses of electron scattering data, predictions for high-energy neutrino and antineutrino cross sections are given and compared with results obtained using the relativistic Fermi gas model. The influence of strangeness content inside the nucleons in the nucleus is also explored.

Superscaling in charged current neutrino quasielastic scattering in the relativistic impulse approximation

Superscaling of the quasielastic cross section in charged current neutrino-nucleus reactions at energies of a few GeV is investigated within the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation. Several approaches are used to describe final state interactions and comparisons are made with the plane wave approximation. Superscaling is very successful in all cases. The scaling function obtained using a relativistic mean field for the final states shows an asymmetric shape with a long tail extending towards positive values of the scaling variable, in excellent agreement with the behavior presented by the experimental scaling function.

Electroweak quasielastic response functions in nuclear matter

Quasielastic electromagnetic and parity-violating electron scattering response functions of relativistic nuclear matter are reviewed. The roles played by the Hartree-Fock field and by nuclear correlations in the Random Phase Approximation (treated within the continued fraction scheme) are illustrated. The parity-violating responses of nuclei to polarized electrons are also revisited, stressing in particular the crucial role played by the pion in the nuclear dynamics. Finally, some issues surrounding scaling and sum rules are addressed.

Semi-relativistic description of quasielastic neutrino reactions and superscaling in a continuum shell model

The so-called semi-relativistic expansion of the weak charged current in powers of the initial nucleon momentum is performed to describe charge-changing, quasielastic neutrino reactions $(ν_μ,μ^-)$ at intermediate energies. The quality of the expansion is tested by comparing with the relativistic Fermi gas model using several choices of kinematics of interest for ongoing neutrino oscillation experiments. The new current is then implemented in a continuum shell model together with relativistic kinematics to investigate the scaling properties of $(e,e')$ and $(ν_μ,μ^-)$ cross sections.

Using Electron Scattering Superscaling to predict Charge-changing Neutrino Cross Sections in Nuclei

Superscaling analyses of few-GeV inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are extended to include not only quasielastic processes, but now also into the region where $Δ$-excitation dominates. It is shown that, with reasonable assumptions about the basic nuclear scaling function extracted from data and information from other studies of the relative roles played by correlation and MEC effects, the residual strength in the resonance region can be accounted for through an extended scaling analysis. One observes scaling upon assuming that the elementary cross section by which one divides the residual to obtain a new scaling function is dominated by the $N\toΔ$ transition and employing a new scaling variable which is suited to the resonance region. This yields a good representation of the electromagnetic response in both the quasielastic and $Δ$ regions. The scaling approach is then inverted and predictions are made for charge-changing neutrino reactions at energies of a few GeV, with focus placed on nuclei which are relevant for neutrino oscillation measurements. For this a relativistic treatment of the required weak interaction vector and axial-vector currents for both quasielastic and $Δ$-excitation processes is presented.

Final-state interaction and recoil polarization in (e,e'p) reactions: comparison with the polarized target case

A study of the total cross section for polarized proton knockout in $(e,e'{\vec p})$ reactions is carried out for the closed-shell nucleus $^{40}$Ca. The dependence of FSI effects on polarization observables viewed as functions of the nucleon polarization angles is analyzed and interpreted within the basis of a semi-classical model for the orbit of the struck nucleon and trajectory of the ejected nucleon. A comparison with the case of a $^{39}$K polarized target and unpolarized protons is performed.
