A directional uniformity of periodic point distribution and mixing

For mixing~$\mathbb Z^d$-actions generated by commuting automorphisms of a compact abelian group, we investigate the directional uniformity of the rate of periodic point distribution and mixing. When each of these automorphisms has finite entropy, it is shown that directional mixing and directional convergence of the uniform measure supported on periodic points to Haar measure occurs at a uniform rate independent of the direction.

Mertens' theorem for toral automorphisms

A dynamical Mertens' theorem for ergodic toral automorphisms with error term O(N^{-1}) is found, and the influence of resonances among the eigenvalues of unit modulus is examined. Examples are found with many more, and with many fewer, periodic orbits than expected.

Dirichlet series for finite combinatorial rank dynamics

We introduce a class of group endomorphisms -- those of finite combinatorial rank -- exhibiting slow orbit growth. An associated Dirichlet series is used to obtain an exact orbit counting formula, and in the connected case this series is shown to have a closed rational form. Analytic properties of the Dirichlet series are related to orbit-growth asymptotics: depending on the location of the abscissa of convergence and the degree of the pole there, various orbit-growth asymptotics are found, all of which are polynomially bounded.

Orbit-counting in non-hyperbolic dynamical systems

There are well-known analogs of the prime number theorem and Mertens' theorem for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behaviour. Here we consider the same question for the simplest non-hyperbolic algebraic systems. The asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function is governed by a rotation on an associated compact group, and in simple examples we exhibit uncountably many different asymptotic growth rates for the orbit-counting function. Mertens' Theorem also holds in this setting, with an explicit rational leading coefficient obtained from arithmetic properties of the non-hyperbolic eigendirections.

Primes Generated by Recurrence Sequences

We consider primitive divisors of terms of integer sequences defined by quadratic polynomials. Apart from some small counterexamples, when a term has a primitive divisor, that primitive divisor is unique. It seems likely that the number of terms with a primitive divisor has a natural density. We discuss two heuristic arguments to suggest a value for that density, one using recent advances made about the distribution of roots of polynomial congruences.

Orbit counting with an isometric direction

Analogues of the prime number theorem and Merten's theorem are well-known for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behaviour. In this paper a 3-adic extension of the circle doubling map is studied. The map has a 3-adic eigendirection in which it behaves like an isometry, and the loss of hyperbolicity leads to weaker asymptotic results on orbit counting than those obtained for hyperbolic maps.

Finite entropy characterizes topological rigidity

Let X_1 and X_2 be mixing connected algebraic dynamical systems with the Descending Chain Condition. We show that every equivariant continuous map X_1 to X_2 is affine (that is, X_2 is topologically rigid) if and only if the system X_2 has finite topological entropy.

Dynamical systems arising from elliptic curves

We exhibit a family of dynamical systems arising from rational points on elliptic curves in an attempt to mimic the familiar toral automorphisms. At the non-archimedean primes, a continuous map is constructed on the local elliptic curve whose topological entropy is given by the local canonical height. Also, a precise formula for the periodic points is given. There follows a discussion of how these local results may be glued together to give a map on the adelic curve. We are able to give a map whose entropy is the global canonical height and whose periodic points are counted asymptotically by the real division polynomial (although the archimedean component of the map is artificial). Finally, we set out a precise conjecture about the existence of elliptic dynamical systems and discuss a possible connection with mathematical physics.

Fitting ideals for finitely presented algebraic dynamical systems

We consider a class of algebraic dynamical systems introduced by Kitchens and Schmidt. Under a weak finiteness condition -- the Descending Chain Condition -- the dual modules have finite presentations. Using methods from commutative algebra we show how the dynamical properties of the system may be deduced from the Fitting ideals of a finite free resolution of the finitely presented module. The entropy and expansiveness are shown to depend only on the first Fitting ideal (and certain multiplicity data) which gives an easy computation: in particular, no syzygy modules need to be computed. For `square' presentations (in which the number of generators is equal to the number of relations) all the dynamics is visible in the first Fitting ideal and certain multiplicity data, and we show how the dynamical properties and periodic point behaviour may be deduced from the determinant of the matrix of relations.

Dynamical zeta functions for typical extensions of full shifts

We consider a family of isometric extensions of the full shift on p symbols (for p a prime) parametrized by a probability space. Using Heath-Brown's work on the Artin conjecture, it is shown that for all but two primes p the set of limit points of the growth rate of periodic points is infinite almost surely. This shows in particular that the dynamical zeta function is not algebraic almost surely.
