The first view of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus stars with the TESS mission

We present the first asteroseismic results for $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus stars observed in Sectors 1 and 2 of the TESS mission. We utilise the 2-min cadence TESS data for a sample of 117 stars to classify their behaviour regarding variability and place them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram using Gaia DR2 data. Included within our sample are the eponymous members of two pulsator classes, $γ$ Doradus and SX Phoenicis. Our sample of pulsating intermediate-mass stars observed by TESS also allows us to confront theoretical models of pulsation driving in the classical instability strip for the first time and show that mixing processes in the outer envelope play an important role. We derive an empirical estimate of 74% for the relative amplitude suppression factor as a result of the redder TESS passband compared to the Kepler mission using a pulsating eclipsing binary system. Furthermore, our sample contains many high-frequency pulsators, allowing us to probe the frequency variability of hot young $δ$ Scuti stars, which were lacking in the Kepler mission data set, and identify promising targets for future asteroseismic modelling. The TESS data also allow us to refine the stellar parameters of SX Phoenicis, which is believed to be a blue straggler.

Structural and electronic phase transitions driven by electric field in metastable MoS$_2$ thin flake

Transition-metal-dichalcogenides own a variety of structures as well as electronic properties which can be modulated by structural variations, element substitutions, ion or molecule intercalations, etc. However, there is very limited knowledge on metastable phases of this family, especially the precise regulation of structural changes and accompanied evolution of electronic properties. Here, based on a new developed field-effect transistor with solid ion conductor as the gate dielectric, we report a controllable structural and electronic phase transitions in metastable MoS$_2$ thin flakes driven by electric field. We found that the metastable structure of 1T$^{'''}$-MoS$_2$ thin flake can be transformed into another metastable structure of 1T$^{'}$ -type upon intercalation of lithium regulated by electric field. Moreover, the metastable 1T$^{'}$ phase persists during the cycle of intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium controlled by electric field, and the electronic properties can be reversibly manipulated with a remarkable change of resistance by four orders of magnitude from the insulating 1T$^{'}$-LiMoS$_2$ to superconducting 1T$^{'}$-MoS$_2$. Such reversible and dramatic changes in electronic properties provide intriguing opportunities for development of novel nano-devices with highly tunable characteristics under electric field.

Observation of Strong Terahertz Radiation from a Liquid Water Line

Terahertz radiation generation from liquid water has long been considered to be impossible due to strong absorption. A few very recent works reported terahertz generation from water, but the mechanism is not clear and the efficiency demands to be enhanced. We show experimentally that strong single-cycle terahertz radiation with field strength of $\rm 0.2~MV cm^{-1}$ is generated from a water line/column of $\sim 200 μm$ in diameter irradiated by a mJ femtosecond laser beam. This strength is 100-fold higher than that produced from air. We attribute the mechanism to the laser-ponderomotive-force-induced current with the symmetry broken around the water-column interface. This mechanism can explain our following observations: the radiation can be generated only when the laser propagation axis deviates from the column center; the deviation determines its field strength and polarity; it is always p-polarized no matter whether the laser is p- or s-polarized. This study provides a simple and efficient scheme of table-top terahertz sources based on liquid water.

Overview of the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr)

An overview of our experimental program to search for axion and axion-like-particle (ALP) dark matter using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques is presented. An oscillating axion field can exert a time-varying torque on nuclear spins either directly or via generation of an oscillating nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM). Magnetic resonance techniques can be used to detect such an effect. The first-stage experiments explore many decades of ALP parameter space beyond the current astrophysical and laboratory bounds. It is anticipated that future versions of the experiments will be sensitive to the axions associated with quantum chromodynamics (QCD) having masses $\lesssim 10^{-9}~{\rm eV}/c^2$.

Superconductivity in the metastable 1T' and 1T''' phases of MoS$_2$ crystals

Transition-metal dichalcogenides open novel opportunities for the exploration of exciting new physics and devices. As a representative system, 2H-MoS$_2$ has been extensively investigated owing to its unique band structure with a large band gap, degenerate valleys and non-zero Berry curvature. However, experimental studies of metastable 1T polytypes have been a challenge for a long time, and electronic properties are obscure due to the inaccessibility of single phase without the coexistence of 1T', 1T'' and 1T''' lattice structures, which hinder the broad applications of MoS$_2$ in future nanodevices and optoelectronic devices. Using ${K_x(H_2O)_yMoS_2}$ as the precursor, we have successfully obtained high-quality layered crystals of the metastable 1T'''-MoS$_2$ with $\sqrt{3}a\times\sqrt{3}a$ superstructure and metastable 1T'-MoS$_2$ with a$\times$2a superstructure, as evidenced by structural characterizations through scanning tunneling microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is found that the metastable 1T'-MoS$_2$ is a superconductor with onset transition temperature (${T_c}$) of 4.2 K, while the metastable 1 T'''-MoS$_2$ shows either superconductivity with Tc of 5.3 K or insulating behavior, which strongly depends on the synthesis procedure. Both of the metastable polytypes of MoS$_2$ crystals can be transformed to the stable 2H phase with mild annealing at about 70 $^{\circ}$C in He atmosphere. These findings provide pivotal information on the atomic configurations and physical properties of 1T polytypes of MoS$_2$.

Electric-field controlled superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator transition

How to control collectively ordered electronic states is a core interest of condensed matter physics. We report an electric field controlled reversible transition from superconductor to ferromagnetic insulator in (Li,Fe)OHFeSe thin flake using solid ion conductor as the gate dielectric. By driving Li ions into and out of the (Li,Fe)OHFeSe thin flake with electric field, we obtained a dome-shaped superconducting region with optimal Tc ~ 43 K, which is separated by a quantum critical point from ferromagnetically insulating phase. The ferromagnetism arises from the long range order of the interstitial Fe ions expelled from the (Li,Fe)OH layers by Li injection. The device can reversibly manipulate collectively ordered electronic states and stabilize new metastable structures by electric field.

High mobility InAs 2DEGs on GaSb substrates: a platform for mesoscopic quantum transport

High mobility, strong spin-orbit coupling, and large Landé g-factor make the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in InAs quantum wells grown on nearly-lattice-matched GaSb substrates an attractive platform for mesoscopic quantum transport experiments. Successful operation of mesoscopic devices relies on three key properties: electrical isolation from the substrate; ability to fully deplete the 2DEG and control residual sidewall conduction with lithographic gates; and high mobility to ensure ballistic transport over mesoscopic length scales. Simultaneous demonstration of these properties has remained elusive for InAs 2DEGs on GaSb substrates. Here we report on heterostructure design, molecular beam epitaxy growth, and device fabrication that result in high carrier mobility and full 2DEG depletion with minimal residual edge conduction. Our results provide a pathway to fully-controlled 2DEG-based InAs mesoscopic devices.

Revealing the hidden order in BaTi2As2O via nuclear magnetic resonance

In low-dimensional metallic systems, lattice distortion is usually coupled to a density-wave-like electronic instability due to Fermi surface nesting (FSN) and strong electron-phonon coupling. However, the ordering of other electronic degrees of freedom can also occur simultaneously with the lattice distortion thus challenges the aforementioned prevailing scenario. Recently, a hidden electronic reconstruction beyond FSN was revealed in a layered metallic compound BaTi2As2O below the structural transition temperature Ts ~ 200 K. The nature of this hidden electronic instability is under strong debate. Here, by measuring the local orbital polarization through 75As nuclear magnetic resonance experiment, we observe a p-d bond order between Ti and As atoms in BaTi2As2O single crystal. Below Ts, the bond order breaks both rotational and translational symmetry of the lattice. Meanwhile, the spin-lattice relaxation measurement indicates a substantial loss of density of states and an enhanced spin fluctuation in the bond-order state. Further first-principles calculations suggest that the mechanism of the bond order is due to the coupling of lattice and nematic instabilities. Our results strongly support a bond-order driven electronic reconstruction in BaTi2As2O and shed light on the mechanism of superconductivity in this family.

Evidence for negative thermal expansion in the superconducting precursor phase SmFeAsO

The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagram for SmFeAsO: (i) a global minimum at 125 K corresponds to the opening of a spin-density wave instability as measured by pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy whilst (ii) a global maximum at 110 K corresponds to magnetic ordering of the Sm and Fe sublattices as measured by magnetic x-ray scattering. At much lower temperatures than T$\rm{_{N}}$, SmFeAsO exhibits a significant negative thermal expansion on the order of -40~ppm~$\cdot$~K$^{-1}$ in contrast to the behavior of other rare-earth oxypnictides such as PrFeAsO and the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO where the onset of $α<$ 0 only appears in the vicinity of magnetic ordering. Correlating this feature with the temperature and doping dependence of the resistivity and the unit cell parameters, we interpret the negative thermal expansion as being indicative of the possible condensation of itinerant electrons accompanying the opening of a SDW gap, consistent with transport measurements.

Magnetic-field enhanced high-thermoelectric performance in topological Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ crystal

Thermoelectric materials can be used to convert heat to electric power through the Seebeck effect. We study magneto-thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ crystal. It is found that enhancement of power factor and reduction of thermal conductivity can be realized at the same time through magnetic field although magnetoresistivity is greatly increased. ZT can be highly enhanced from 0.17 to 1.1 by more than six times around 350 K under a perpendicular magnetic field of 7 Tesla. The huge enhancement of ZT by magnetic field arises from the linear Dirac band with large Fermi velocity and the large electric thermal conductivity in Cd$_3$As$_2$. Our work paves a new way to greatly enhance the thermoelectric performance in the quantum topological materials.

Spin susceptibility of charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy across the upper critical field

The value of the upper critical field Hc2, a fundamental characteristic of the superconducting state, has been subject to strong controversy in high-Tc copper-oxides. Since the issue has been tackled almost exclusively by macroscopic techniques so far, there is a clear need for local-probe measurements. Here, we use 17O NMR to measure the spin susceptibility $χ_{spin}$ of the CuO2 planes at low temperature in charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that $χ_{spin}$ increases (most likely linearly) with magnetic field H and saturates above field values ranging from 20 to 40 T. This result is consistent with Hc2 values claimed by G. Grissonnanche et al. [Nat. Commun. 5, 3280 (2014)] and with the interpretation that the charge-density-wave (CDW) reduces Hc2 in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. Furthermore, the absence of marked deviation in $χ_{spin}(H)$ at the onset of long-range CDW order indicates that this Hc2 reduction and the Fermi-surface reconstruction are primarily rooted in the short-range CDW order already present in zero field, not in the field-induced long-range CDWorder. Above Hc2, the relatively low values of $χ_{spin}$ at T=2 K show that the pseudogap is a ground-state property, independent of the superconducting gap.

Breakdown of single spin-fluid model in heavily hole-doped superconductor CsFe2As2

Although Fe-based superconductors are multiorbital correlated electronic systems, previous nuclei magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement suggests that a single spin-fluid model is sufficient to describe its spin behavior. Here, we firstly observed the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in a heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductor CsFe2As2 by site-selective NMR measurement. At high temperature regime, both of Knight shift and nuclei spin-lattice relaxation at 133Cs and 75As nuclei exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behavior, suggesting the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in CsFe2As2. This is ascribed to the coexistence of both localized and itinerant spin degree of freedom at 3d orbits, which is consistent with orbital-selective Mott phase. However, single spin-fluid behavior is gradually recovered by developing a coherent state among 3d orbits with decreasing temperature. A Kondo liquid scenario is proposed for the low-temperature coherent state. The present work sets strong constraint on the theoretical model for Fe-based superconductors.

Large magnetic anisotropy in $Fe_xTaS_2$ single crystals

In intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide $Fe_xTaS_2$ (0.2 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.4) single crystals, large magnetic anisotropy is observed. Transport property measurements indicate that heavy Fe-doping leads to a large anisotropy of resistivity ($ρ$$_{c}$/$ρ$$_{ab}$). A sharp M-H hysteresis curve is observed with magnetic field along c-axis, while a linear magnetization appears with magnetic field applied in the ab-plane. The angular dependent magnetic susceptibility from in-plane to out-of-plane indicates that magnetic moments are strongly pinned along the c-axis in an unconventional manner and the coercive field reaches as large as 6 T at T = 5 K. First-principles calculation clearly suggests that the strong spin-orbital coupling give rise to such a large anisotropy of magnetism. The strong pinning effect of magnetic moments along c-axis makes this material a very promising candidate for the development of spin-aligner in spintronics devices.

Tuning electronic properties of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin flakes by a novel field effect transistor

Using a field-effect transistor (FET) configuration with solid Li-ion conductor (SIC) as gate dielectric, we have successfully tuned carrier density in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin flakes, and the electronic phase diagram has been mapped out. It is found that electron doping controlled by SIC-FET leads to a suppression of the superconducting phase, and eventually gives rise to an insulating state in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$. During the gating process, the (001) peak in XRD patterns stays at the same position and no new diffraction peak emerges, indicating no evident Li$^+$ ions intercalation into the FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$. It indicates that a systematic change of electronic properties in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ arises from the electrostatic doping induced by the accumulation of Li$^+$ ions at the interface between FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and solid ion conductor in the devices. It is striking that these findings are drastically different from the observation in FeSe thin flakes using the same SIC-FET, in which $T_c$ is enhanced from 8 K to larger than 40 K, then the system goes into an insulating phase accompanied by structural transitions.

Reemergeing electronic nematicity in heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductors

In correlated electrons system, quantum melting of electronic crystalline phase often gives rise to many novel electronic phases. In cuprates superconductors, melting the Mott insulating phase with carrier doping leads to a quantum version of liquid crystal phase, the electronic nematicity, which breaks the rotational symmetry and exhibits a tight twist with high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, the electronic nematicity has also been observed in Fe-based superconductors. However, whether it shares a similar scenario with its cuprates counterpart is still elusive. Here, by measuring nuclear magnetic resonance in CsFe2As2, a prototypical Fe-based superconductor perceived to have evolved from a Mott insulating phase at 3d5 configuration, we report anisotropic quadruple broadening effect as a direct result of local rotational symmetry breaking. For the first time, clear connection between the Mott insulating phase and the electronic nematicity can be established and generalized to the Fe-based superconductors. This finding would promote a universal understanding on electronic nematicity and its relation with high-temperature superconductivity.

Tuning phase transitions of FeSe thin flakes by field effect transistor with solid ion conductor as gate dielectric

We develop a novel field effect transistor (FET) device using solid ion conductor (SIC) as a gate dielectric, and we can tune the carrier density of FeSe by driving lithium ions in and out of the FeSe thin flakes, and consequently control the material properties and its phase transitions. A dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram was mapped out with increasing Li content, with $T_c$ $\sim$ 46.6 K for the optimal doping, and an insulating phase was reached at the extremely overdoped regime. Our study suggests that, using solid ion conductor as a gate dielectric, the SIC-FET device can achieve much higher carrier doping in the bulk, and suit many surface sensitive experimental probes, and can stabilize novel structural phases that are inaccessible in ordinary conditions.

Observation of electronic bound states in charge-ordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$

Observing how electronic states in solids react to a local symmetry breaking provides insight into their microscopic nature. A striking example is the formation of bound states when quasiparticles are scattered off defects. This is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors but not, in general, in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Here, we report the unforeseen observation of bound states when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. Bound states indeed produce an inhomogeneous pattern of the local density of states $N(E_F)$ that leads to a skewed distribution of Knight shifts which is detected here through an asymmetric profile of $^{17}$O NMR lines. We argue that the effect arises most likely from scattering off defects in the CDW state, which provides a novel case of disorder-induced bound states in a condensed-matter system and an insightful window into charge ordering in the cuprates.

TARGET 5: a new multi-channel digitizer with triggering capabilities for gamma-ray atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes

TARGET~5 is a new application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) of the TARGET family, designed for the readout of signals from photosensors in the cameras of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. TARGET~5 combines sampling and digitization on 16 signal channels with the formation of trigger signals based on the analog sum of groups of four channels. We describe the ASIC architecture and performance. TARGET~5 improves over the performance of the first-generation TARGET ASIC, achieving: tunable sampling frequency from $<0.4$~GSa/s to $>1$~GSa/s; a dynamic range on the data path of 1.2 V with effective dynamic range of 11~bits and DC noise of ${\sim}0.6$~mV; 3-dB bandwidth of 500 MHz; crosstalk between adjacent channels $<1.3\%$; charge resolution improving from 40\% to $<4\%$ between 3 photoelectrons (p.e.) and $>100$~p.e. (assuming 4 mV per p.e.); and minimum stable trigger threshold of 20 mV (5 p.e.) with trigger noise of 5 mV (1.2 p.e.), which is mostly limited by interference between trigger and sampling operations. TARGET~5 is the first ASIC of the TARGET family used in an IACT prototype, providing one development path for readout electronics in the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).
