Isochronous mass measurements of $T_z=-1$ $fp$-shell nuclei from projectile fragmentation of $^{58}$Ni

Atomic masses of seven $T_z=-1$, $fp$-shell nuclei from $^{44}$V to $^{56}$Cu and two low-lying isomers, $^{44m}$V ($J^π=6^+$) and $^{52m}$Co ($J^π=2^+$), have been measured with relative precisions of $1-4\times 10^{-7}$ with Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) at CSRe. The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found to be $370$~keV and $400$~keV more bound, respectively, while $^{44g,44m}$V are $\sim 300$~keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME$^{\prime}$12). The masses of the four $T_z=-1/2$ nuclei $^{45}$V, $^{47}$Cr, $^{49}$Mn, and $^{51}$Fe are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new $ME$ values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed.

Large entropy change derived from the orbitally assisted three-centered two-electron σ bond formation in a metallic Li0.33VS2

We discuss herein the emergence of a large entropy change in metallic Li0.33VS2 derived from the orbitally assisted loose σ bond formation. Comprehensive structural studies based on synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction analyses clarify the fabrication of ribbon chains at 375 K, consisting of multiple three-centered two-electron σ bonds based on the viewpoint of local chemical bonding. Although the metallic conductivity persists down to the lowest temperature measured, exceptionally large entropy change as a metal, as much as ΔS = 6.6 J/mol K, appears at the transition. Emergence of a large entropy change in a metallic state expects us the possible novel functional materials, such as a heat-storage material with rapid thermal response.

The optical conductivity for a spin-Peierls ground state of (TMTTF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$ with tetramer formation

We theoretically investigate the optical conductivity of (TMTTF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$ in the spin-Peierls ground state within the framework of the exact diagonalization method at absolute zero temperature ($T=0$). As an effective model, a 1/4-filled 1D (one-dimensional) extended Hubbard model with tetramerization is employed. Using appropriate parameters of the model which have already been reported, we clarify the electronic photoexcitation energies from the spin-Peierls ground state. Since some experiments indicate the formation of a tetramer in the spin-Peierls ground state of (TMTTF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$, our results are useful to understand the effects of tetramerization on the optical properties of (TMTTF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$.

The Masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ Nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S

Isochronous mass spectrometry has been applied in the storage ring CSRe to measure the masses of the $T_z=-3/2$ nuclei $^{27}$P and $^{29}$S. The new mass excess value $ME$($^{29}$S) $=-3094(13)$~keV is 66(52)~keV larger than the result of the previous $^{32}$S($^3$He,$^{6}$He)$^{29}$S reaction measurement in 1973 and a factor of 3.8 more precise. The new result for $^{29}$S, together with those of the $T=3/2$ isobaric analog states (IAS) in $^{29}$P, $^{29}$Si, and $^{29}$Al, fit well into the quadratic form of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation IMME. The mass excess of $^{27}$P has been remeasured to be $ME(^{27}$P$)=-685(42)$ keV. By analyzing the linear and quadratic coefficients of the IMME in the $T_z=-3/2$ $sd$-shell nuclei, it was found that the ratio of the Coulomb radius parameters is $R\approx0.96$ and is nearly the same for all $T=3/2$ isospin multiplets. Such a nearly constant $R$-value, apparently valid for the entire light mass region with $A>9$, can be used to set stringent constraints on the isovector and isotensor components of the isospin non-conserving forces in theoretical calculations.

Ferromagnetic Peierls insulator state in $\mathit{A}$Mg$_4$Mn$_6$O$_{15}$ ($\mathit{A}$ = K, Rb, Cs)

Using the density-functional-theory based electronic structure calculations, we study the electronic state of recently discovered mixed-valent manganese oxides $A$Mg$_4$Mn$_6$O$_{15}$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs), which are fully spin-polarized ferromagnetic insulators with a cubic crystal structure. We show that the system may be described as a three-dimensional arrangement of the one-dimensional chains of a $2p$ orbital of O and a $3d$ orbital of Mn running along the three axes of the cubic lattice. We thereby argue that in the ground state the chains are fully spin polarized due to the double-exchange mechanism and are distorted by the Peierls mechanism to make the system insulating.

Mass Measurements of Neutron-Deficient Y, Zr, and Nb Isotopes and Their Impact on $rp$ and $νp$ Nucleosynthesis Processes

Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of $^{82}$Zr and $^{84}$Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of $\sim 10$ keV, and the masses of $^{79}$Y, $^{81}$Zr, and $^{83}$Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. %The latter differ significantly from their literature values. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low $α$ separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr-Nb cycle in the $rp$-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of $^{83}$Nb was determined to be 490(400)~keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the $p$-nucleus $^{84}$Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous $νp$-process simulations.

Appropriate conditions to realize a $p$-wave superfluid state starting from a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas

We theoretically investigate a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas, to examine the time evolution of the system, after an $s$-wave pairing interaction is replaced by a $p$-wave one at $t=0$. In our recent paper, we proposed that this manipulation may realize a $p$-wave superfluid Fermi gas, because the $p$-wave pair amplitude that is induced in the $s$-wave superfluid state by a parity-broken antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction gives a non-vanishing $p$-wave superfluid order parameter, immediately after the $p$-wave interaction is turned on. In this paper, using a time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we assess this idea under various conditions with respect to the $s$-wave and $p$-wave interaction strengths, as well as the spin-orbit coupling strength. From these, we clarify that the momentum distribution of Fermi atoms in the initial $s$-wave state ($t<0$) is a key to produce a large $p$-wave superfluid order parameter. Since the realization of a $p$-wave superfluid state is one of the most exciting and difficult challenges in cold Fermi gas physics, our results may provide a possible way to accomplish this.

Identification of the Lowest $T=2$, $J^{π=}0^+$ Isobaric Analog State in $^{52}$Co and Its Impact on the Understanding of $β$-Decay Properties of $^{52}$Ni

Masses of $^{52g,52m}$Co were measured for the first time with an accuracy of $\sim 10$ keV, an unprecedented precision reached for short-lived nuclei in the isochronous mass spectrometry. Combining our results with the previous $β$-$γ$ measurements of $^{52}$Ni, the $T=2$, $J^π=0^+$ isobaric analog state (IAS) in $^{52}$Co was newly assigned, questioning the conventional identification of IASs from the $β$-delayed proton emissions. Using our energy of the IAS in $^{52}$Co, the masses of the $T=2$ multiplet fit well into the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation. We find that the IAS in $^{52}$Co decays predominantly via $γ$ transitions while the proton emission is negligibly small. According to our large-scale shell model calculations, this phenomenon has been interpreted to be due to very low isospin mixing in the IAS.

A Novel Route to Reach a $p$-wave Superfluid Fermi Gas

We theoretically propose an idea to realize a $p$-wave superfluid Fermi gas. To overcome the experimental difficulty that a $p$-wave pairing interaction to form $p$-wave Cooper pairs damages the system before the condensation growth, we first prepare a $p$-wave pair amplitude ($Φ_{p}$) in a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas, without any $p$-wave interaction. Then, by suddenly changing the $s$-wave interaction with a $p$-wave one ($U_{p}$) by using a Feshbach resonance, we reach the $p$-wave superfluid phase with the $p$-wave order parameter being symbolically written as $Δ_{p}\sim U_{p}Φ_{p}$. In this letter, we assess this scenario within the framework of a time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. Our results would contribute to the study toward the realization of unconventional pairing states in an ultracold Fermi gas.

Direct mass measurements of neutron-rich $^{86}$Kr projectile fragments and the persistence of neutron magic number $N$ = 32 in Sc isotopes

In this paper, we present direct mass measurements of neutron-rich $^{86}$Kr projectile fragments conducted at the HIRFL-CSR facility in Lanzhou by employing the Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) method. The new mass excesses of $^{52-54}$Sc nuclides are determined to be -40492(82), -38928(114), -34654(540) keV, which show a significant increase of binding energy compared to the reported ones in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME12). In particular, $^{53}$Sc and $^{54}$Sc are more bound by 0.8 MeV and 1.0 MeV, respectively. The behavior of the two neutron separation energy with neutron numbers indicates a strong sub-shell closure at neutron number $N$ = 32 in Sc isotopes.

Novel Diamond Anvil Cell for Electrical Measurements using Boron-doped Metallic Diamond Electrodes

A novel diamond anvil cell suitable for electrical transport measurements under high pressure has been developed. A boron-doped metallic diamond film was deposited as an electrode onto a nano-polycrystalline diamond anvil using a microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique combined with electron beam lithography. The electrical transport measurements of Pb were performed up to 8 GPa, and the maximum pressure reached was above 30 GPa. The boron-doped metallic diamond electrodes showed no signs of degradation after repeated compression measurements.

Development of a fast plastic scintillation detector with time resolution of less than 10 ps

Timing-pick up detectors with excellent timing resolutions are essential in many modern nuclear physics experiments. Aiming to develop a Time-Of-Flight system with precision down to about 10 ps, we have made a systematic study of the timing characteristic of TOF detectors, which consist of several combinations of plastic scintillators and photomultiplier tubes. With the conventional electronics, the best timing resolution of about 5.1 ps (σ) has been achieved for detectors with an area size of 3x1 cm2. It is found that for data digitalization a combination of TAC and ADC can achieve a better time resolution than currently available TDC. Simultaneously measurements of both time and pulse height are very valuable for correction of time-walk effect.

Rashbon bound states associated with a spherical spin-orbit coupling in an ultracold Fermi gas with an $s$-wave interaction

We investigate the formation of rashbon bound states and strong-coupling effects in an ultracold Fermi gas with a spherical spin-orbit interaction, $H_{\rm so}=λ{\bf p}\cdot{\bf σ}$ (where ${\bf σ}=(σ_x,σ_y,σ_z)$ are Pauli matrices). Extending the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink (NSR) to include this spin-orbit coupling, we determine the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, as functions of the strength of a pairing interaction $U_s$, as well as the spin-orbit coupling strength $λ$. Evaluating poles of the NSR particle-particle scattering matrix describing fluctuations in the Cooper channel, we clarify the region where rashbon bound states dominate the superfluid phase transition in the $U_{s}$-$λ$ phase diagram. Since the antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction $H_{\rm so}$ breaks the inversion symmetry of the system, rashbon bound states naturally have, not only a spin-singlet and even-parity symmetry, but also a spin-triplet and odd-parity symmetry. Thus, our results would be also useful for the study of this parity mixing effect in the BCS-BEC crossover regime of a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas.

Direct mass measurements of Cd isotopes show strong shell gap at N=82

A $^{238}$U projectile beam was used to create cadmium isotopes via abrasion-fission at 410 MeV/u in a beryllium target at the entrance of the in-flight separator FRS at GSI. The fission fragments were separated with the FRS and injected into the isochronous storage ring ESR for mass measurements. The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) was performed under two different experimental conditions, with and without B$ρ$-tagging at the dispersive central focal plane of the FRS. In the experiment with B$ρ$-tagging the magnetic rigidity of the injected fragments was determined by an accuracy of $2\times 10^{-4}$. A new method of data analysis, using a correlation matrix for the combined data set from both experiments, has provided mass values for 25 different isotopes for the first time. The high selectivity and sensitivity of the experiment and analysis has given access even to rare isotopes detected with a few atoms per week. In this letter we present for the $^{129,130,131}$Cd isotopes mass values directly measured for the first time. The Cd results clearly show a very pronounced shell effect at $N=82$ which is in agreement with the conclusion from $γ$-ray spectroscopy of $^{130}$Cd and confirms the assumptions of modern shell-model calculations.

Proposed method to realize the $p$-wave superfluid state using a $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas with a synthetic spin-orbit interaction

We theoretically propose an idea to reach the $p$-wave superfluid phase in an ultracold Fermi gas. The key of our idea is that the pairing symmetry of a Fermi superfluid is fully dominated by the symmetry of the superfluid order parameter, which is essentially given by the product of a pair amplitude and a pairing interaction. Noting this, in our proposal, we first prepare a $p$-wave pair amplitude by, not using a $p$-wave interaction, but using the phenomenon that a $p$-wave pair amplitude is induced in an $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas with antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction. In this case, although the system is still in the $s$-wave superfluid state with the $s$-wave superfluid order parameter, when one suddenly replaces the $s$-wave interaction by an appropriate $p$-wave one (which is possible in cold Fermi gases by using a Feshbach resonance technique), the product of the $p$-wave interaction and the $p$-wave pair amplitude that has already been prepared in the spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid state immediately gives a finite $p$-wave superfluid order parameter. Thus, at least just after this manipulation, the system is in the $p$-wave superfluid state, being characterized by the artificially produced $p$-wave superfluid parameter. In this paper, to assess our idea, we evaluate the $p$-wave pair amplitude in a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas at $T=0$. We determine the region where a large $p$-wave pair amplitude is obtained in the phase diagram with respect to the strengths of the $s$-wave pairing interaction and the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss the accessibility of this optimal region on the viewpoint of the superfluid phase transition temperature. Since the achievement of a $p$-wave superfluid Fermi gas is one of the most crucial issues in cold atom physics, our proposal would be useful for this exciting challenge.

Pressure-dependent magnetization and magnetoresistivity studies on the tetragonal FeS (mackinawite): revealing its intrinsic metallic character

The transport and magnetic properties of the tetragonal Fe$_{1+δ}$S were investigated using magnetoresistivity and magnetization within 2$\leq T\leq $300 K, $H\leq$70 kOe and $P\leq$ 3.0 GPa. In addition, room-temperature X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy were also applied. In contrast to previously reported nonmetallic character, Fe$_{1+δ}$S is intrinsically metallic but due to a presence of a weak localization such metallic character is not exhibited below room temperature. An applied pressure reduces strongly this additional resistive contribution and as such enhances the temperature range of the metallic character which, for $\sim$3 GPa, is evident down to 75 K. The absence of superconductivity as well as the mechanism behind the weak localization will be discussed.

Temperature Dependence of the Electrical Transport Properties of Multilayer Graphene

Multilayer graphene (MLG) thin films are deposited on silicon oxide substrates by mechanical exfoliation (or 'scotch-tape method') from Kish graphite. The thickness and number of layers are determined from both Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman Spectroscopy. Electrical terminals are deposited on MLGs in a four-probe configuration by electron-beam lithography, gold/titanium thermal evaporation, and lift-off. The electrical resistance is measured from room temperature down to 2 K. The electrical resistance of the MLGs shows an increase with decreasing temperature, and then decreases after reaching a maximum value. These results are compared with recent experimental and theoretical data from the literature.

Accurate correction of magnetic field instabilities for high-resolution isochronous mass measurements in storage rings

Isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) in storage rings is a successful technique for accurate mass measurements of short-lived nuclides with relative precision of about $10^{-5}-10^{-7}$. Instabilities of the magnetic fields in storage rings are one of the major contributions limiting the achievable mass resolving power, which is directly related to the precision of the obtained mass values. A new data analysis method is proposed allowing one to minimise the effect of such instabilities. The masses of the previously measured at the CSRe $^{41}$Ti, $^{43}$V, $^{47}$Mn, $^{49}$Fe, $^{53}$Ni and $^{55}$Cu nuclides were re-determined with this method. An improvement of the mass precision by a factor of $\sim 1.7$ has been achieved for $^{41}$Ti and $^{43}$V. The method can be applied to any isochronous mass experiment irrespective of the accelerator facility. Furthermore, the method can be used as an on-line tool for checking the isochronous conditions of the storage ring.
