Quantum annealing in capacitively coupled Kerr parametric oscillators using frequency-chirped drives

We study parametric oscillations of two capacitively coupled Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs) with frequency-chirped two- and one-photon drives. The two-KPO system adiabatically evolves from the initial vacuum state to an oscillation state corresponding to a solution state in quantum-annealing applications. Frequency chirping dynamically changes the detuning between resonance and oscillation frequencies during parametric modulation and reduces unwanted population transfer to excited states caused by pure dephasing and photon loss. We observe that frequency chirping increases the success probability to obtain the solution state and that simulations taking into account pure dephasing reproduce experiments with and without frequency chirping. This study demonstrates the effectiveness and applicability of frequency chirping to a KPO-based quantum annealer.

Correlated oscillations in Kerr parametric oscillators with tunable effective coupling

We study simultaneous parametric oscillations in a system composed of two distributed-element-circuit Josephson parametric oscillators in the single-photon Kerr regime coupled via a static capacitance. The energy of the system is described by a two-bit Ising Hamiltonian with an effective coupling whose amplitude and sign depend on the relative phase between parametric pumps. We demonstrate that the binary phases of the parametric oscillations are correlated with each other, and that the parity and strength of the correlation can be controlled by adjusting the pump phase. The observed correlation is reproduced in our simulation taking pure dephasing into account. The present result demonstrates the tunability of the Hamiltonian parameters by the phase of external microwave, which can be used in the Ising machine hardware composed of the KPO network.

Spectroscopic observation of the crossover from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator

We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is smaller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $π$, whose probability can be controlled by an externally injected signal.

Theoretical study of reflection spectroscopy for superconducting quantum parametrons

Superconducting parametrons in the single-photon Kerr regime, also called KPOs, have been attracting increasing attention in terms of their applications to quantum annealing and universal quantum computation. It is of practical importance to obtain information of superconducting parametrons operating under an oscillating pump field. Spectroscopy can provide information of a superconducting parametron under examination, such as energy level structure, and also useful information for calibration of the pump field. We theoretically study the reflection spectroscopy of superconducting parametrons, and develop a method to obtain the reflection coefficient. We present formulae of the reflection coefficient, the nominal external and the internal decay rates, and examine the obtained spectra. It is shown that the difference of the populations of energy levels manifests itself as a dip or peak in the amplitude of the reflection coefficient, and one can directly extract the coupling strength between the energy levels by measuring the nominal decay rates when the pump field is sufficiently large.

Search for Axion like particles using Laue-case conversion in a single crystal

Axion Like Particles (ALPs) with a sub-keV range mass are searched by using the light-shining-through-a-wall technique. A novel system is developed in which injected X rays are converted and reconverted by the Laue-case conversion within a silicon single crystal with dual blades. The resonant ALPs' mass of the conversion is scanned by varying the X-ray injection angle to the crystal. No significant signals are observed, and 90% C. L. upper limits on the ALP-two photon coupling constant are obtained as follows, g_{aγγ} < 4.2 \times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1} (m_a < 10 eV), g_{aγγ} < 5.0 \times 10^{-3} GeV^{-1} (46 eV < m_a < 1020 eV). These are the most stringent laboratorial constraints on ALPs heavier than 300 eV.

Theoretical Calculation of coherent Laue-case conversion between X rays and ALPs for an X-ray LSW experiment

Single crystals have high atomic electric fields as much as 10^{11} V/m, which correspond to magnetic fields of \sim 10^3 T. These fields can be utilized to convert X rays into Axion Like Particles (ALPs) coherently similar to X-ray diffraction. In this paper, we perform the first theoretical calculation of the Laue-case conversion in crystals based on the Darwin dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction. The calculation shows that the Laue-case conversion has longer interaction length than the Bragg case, and that ALPs in the keV range can be resonantly converted by tuning an incident angle of X rays. ALPs with mass up to O(10 keV) can be searched by Light-Shining-through-a-Wall (LSW) experiments at synchrotron X-ray facilities.

Probing Physics in Vacuum Using an X-ray Free-Electron Laser, a High-Power Laser, and a High-Field Magnet

A nonlinear interaction between photons is observed in a process that involves charge sources. To observe this process in a vacuum, there are a growing number of theoretical and experimental studies. This process may contain exotic contribution from new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, and is probed by experiments using a high-power laser or a high-field magnet, and more recently using an X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). Here, we review the present status of our experiments testing various vacuum processes. We describe four experiments with a focus on those using an XFEL: (i) photon-photon scattering in the x-ray region, (ii) laser-induced birefringence and diffraction of x rays, (iii) vacuum birefringence induced by a high-field magnet, and (iv) a dedicated search for axion-like particles using the magnet and x rays.

An experiment of X-ray photon-photon elastic scattering with a Laue-case beam collider

We report a search for photon-photon elastic scattering in vacuum in the X-ray region at an energy in the center of mass system of ω_{cms} =6.5 keV for which the QED cross section is σ_{QED} =2.5 \times 10^{-47} m^2. An X-ray beam provided by the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser is split and the two beamlets are made to collide at right angle, with a total integrated luminosity of (1.24 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{28} m^{-2}. No signal X rays from the elastic scattering that satisfy the correlation between energy and scattering angle were detected. We obtain a 95% C.L. upper limit for the scattering cross section of 1.9 \times 10^{-27} m^2 at ω_{cms}=6.5 keV. The upper limit is the lowest upper limit obtained so far by keV experiments.

Resonant Magnetization Switching Conditions of an Exchange-coupled Bilayer under Spin Wave Excitation

We systematically investigated the spin wave-assisted magnetization switching (SWAS) of a L10-FePt / Ni81Fe19 (Permalloy; Py) exchange-coupled bilayer using a pulse-like rf field (hrf) and mapped the switching events in the magnetic field (H) - hrf frequency (f) plane to reveal the switching conditions. The switching occurred only in a limited region following the dispersion relationship of the perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) modes in Py. The results indicate that SWAS is a resonant magnetization switching process, which is different from the conventional microwave assisted switching, and has the potential to be applied to selective switching for multilevel recording media.

Search for Photon-Photon Elastic Scattering in the X-ray Region

We report the first results of a search for real photon-photon scattering using X rays. A novel system is developed to split and collide X-ray pulses by applying interferometric techniques. A total of $6.5\times10^{5}$ pulses (each containing about $10^{11}$ photons) from an X-ray Free-Electron Laser are injected into the system. No scattered events are observed, and an upper limit of $1.7\times 10^{-24}$ ${\rm m^{2}}$ (95% C.L.) is obtained on the photon-photon elastic scattering cross section at 6.5 keV.
