Prediction of the CP violation in the Phenomenological Quark-Lepton Mass Matrix Approach

We explore the phenomenological quark-lepton mass matrices, which are devised following the S$_3$ flavour symmetry principle, yet fully consistent with SU(5) gauge models with the Higgs particles of {\bf 5}, {\bf 45} and their conjugates. The model contains 10 free parameters altogether. When 6 parameters are fixed by charge 2/3 quark and charged lepton masses, charge($-$1/3) quark masses and all quark mixing matrix elements are predicted to be close to experiment, leaving some narrow ranges still as freedom. Further specification of 3 more parameters (using, $m_d$, Cabibbo angle and $|V_{cb}|$) suffices to fix the quark mixing matrix nearly completely, and all elements come out to be in accurate agreement with experiment. We obtain the CP violation phase as a prediction.

A Gauge-Mediation Model of Dynamical SUSY Breaking with a Wide Range of the Gravitino Mass

We provide a gauge-mediation model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking where the gravitino mass takes a value in a wide range from 0.1 eV to 10 GeV. The lower mass region of order 100 keV or less deserves experimental and cosmological interests. The vacuum of our model is a true one without runaway instability, which may be desirable in a cosmological evolution of the universe.

Long Lived Superheavy Dark Matter with Discrete Gauge Symmetries

The recently observed ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin bound can be explained by the decays of some superheavy $X$ particles forming a part of dark matter in our universe. We consider various discrete gauge symmetries ${\bf Z}_N$ to ensure the required long lifetime ($τ_X \simeq 10^{10}-10^{22} years$) of the $X$ particle to explain the UHE cosmic rays in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with massive Majorana neutrinos. We show that there is no anomaly-free discrete gauge symmetry to make the lifetime of the $X$ particle sufficiently long in the MSSM with the $X$ particle. We find, however, possible solutions to this problem especially by enlarging the particle contents in the MSSM. We show a number of solutions introducing an extra pair of singlets $Y$ and $\bar{Y}$ which have fractional ${\bf Z}_N$ (N=2,3) charges. The present experimental constraints on the $X$ particle are briefly discussed.

Primordial Black Hole Formation in Supergravity

We study a double inflation model (a preinflation + a new inflation) in supergravity and discuss the formation of primordial black holes which may be identified with massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) observed in the halo of our galaxy. The preinflation drives an inflaton for the new inflation close to the origin through supergravity effects and the new inflation naturally occurs. If the total e-fold number of the new inflation is smaller than $\sim 60$, both inflations produce cosmologically relevant density fluctuations. If the coherent inflaton oscillation after the preinflation continues until the beginning of the new inflation, density fluctuations on small cosmological scales can be set suitably large to produce black holes MACHOs of masses $\sim 1 M_{\odot}$ in a wide region of parameter space in the double inflation model.

R-Invariant Dilaton Fixing

We consider dilaton stabilization with R invariance, which insures a vanishing cosmological constant at the scale of stabilization. We construct a few models which accommodate weak gauge couplings with large or small gauge groups. Matter condensation plays a central role in the dilaton stabilization.

Real CP Violation

We propose a new mechanism called "real CP violation" to originate spontaneous CP violation. Starting with a CP conserving theory with scalar fields in the adjoint representation of a global or local non-abelian symmetry, we show that even though the VEV's of such scalars are real they give rise to a spontaneous violation of CP. We provide an illustrative example of how this new mechanism of CP violation can give rise to physically significant phases which produce a complex CKM mixing matrix. This mechanism may prove useful in string models with moduli in the adjoint representation as well as in tackling the strong CP problem.

R-Invariant Topological Inflation

We propose a topological inflation model in the framework of supergravity with $R$ invariance. This topological inflation model is not only free from the initial value problem of the inflaton field but also gives low reheating temperature which is favored in supergravity since the overproduction of gravitinos is avoided. Furthermore, the predicted spectrum of the density fluctuations is generally tilted, which will be tested by future observations on CMB anisotropies and large scale structure of the universe.

Bi-Maximal Neutrino Mixing in SO(10)_{GUT}

We find a grand unified SO(10) model which accommodates the bi-maximal neutrino mixing for vacuum-oscillation solutions to the atmospheric and the solar neutrino problems. This model maintains the original SO(10) mass relation between neutrino and up-type quark masses, $m_{ν_2} / m_{ν_3} \sim (m_{c}/m_{t})^2$.

Isocurvature Fluctuations of the M-theory Axion in a Hybrid Inflation Model

The M-theory, the strong-coupling heterotic string theory, presents various interesting new phenomenologies. The M-theory bulk axion is one of these. The decay constant in this context is estimated as $F_a\simeq 10^{16}$ GeV. Direct searches for the M-theory axion seem impossible because of the large decay constant. However, we point out that large isocurvature fluctuations of the M-theory axion are obtained in a hybrid inflation model, which will most likely be detectable in future satellite experiments on anisotropies of cosmic microwave background radiation.

Quark Lepton Mass Hierarchies and the Baryon Asymmetry

The mass hierarchies of quarks and charged leptons as well as a large $\n_\m$-$\n_\t$ mixing angle are naturally explained by the Frogatt-Nielsen mechanism with a nonparallel family structure of chiral charges. We extend this mechanism to right-handed neutrinos. Their out-of-equilibrium decay generates a cosmological baryon asymmetry whose size is quantized in powers of the hierarchy parameter $\e^2$. For the simplest hierarchy pattern the neutrino mass $\bar{m}_\n= (m_{\n_\m}m_{\n_\t})^{1/2} \sim 10^{-2}$ eV, which is inferred from present indications for neutrino oscillations, implies a baryon asymmetry $n_B/s \sim 10^{-10}$. The corresponding baryogenesis temperature is $T_B \sim 10^{10}$ GeV.

Embedding Phenomenological Quark-Lepton Mass Matrices into SU(5) Gauge Models

We construct phenomenological quark-lepton mass matrices based on S$_3$ permutation symmetry in a manner fully compatible with SU(5) grand unification. The Higgs particles we need are {\bf 5}, {\bf 45} and their conjugates. The model gives a charge $-$1/3 quark vs charged lepton mass relation, and also a good fit to mass-mixing relations for the quark sector, as well as an attractive mixing pattern for the lepton sector, explaining a large mixing angle between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$, and either large or small $ν_e-ν_μ$ mixing angle, depending on the choice of couplings, consistent with the currently accepted solutions to the solar neutrino problem.

Large Lepton Mixing in Seesaw Models - Coset-space Family Unification -

We show that the large mixing between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ observed by the SuperKamiokande collaboration is a quite natural prediction in a large class of seesaw models. This large mixing is basically due to the unparallel family structure suggested from the observed mass hierarchies in quark and lepton mass matrices. We show that the unparallel family structure is automatically realized in ``coset-space family unification'' model based on $E_7/SU(5) \times U(1)^3$. This model also suggests the small angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem.

Spectrum of Background X-rays from Moduli Dark Matter

We examine the $X$-ray spectrum from the decay of the dark-matter moduli with mass $\sim {\cal O}(100)$keV, in particular, paying attention to the line spectrum from the moduli trapped in the halo of our galaxy. It is found that with the energy resolution of the current experiments ($\sim 10$%) the line intensity is about twice stronger than that of the continuum spectrum from the moduli that spread in the whole universe. Therefore, in the future experiments with higher energy resolutions it may be possible to detect such line photons. We also investigate the $γ$-ray spectrum emitted from the decay of the multi-GeV moduli. It is shown that the emitted photons may form MeV-bump in the $γ$-ray spectrum. We also find that if the modulus mass is of the order of 10 GeV, the emitted photons at the peak of the continuum spectrum loses their energy by the scattering and the shape of the spectrum is significantly changed, which makes the constraint weaker than that obtained in the previous works.

Cosmological Moduli Problem in Gauge-mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Theories

A generic class of string theories predicts the existence of light moduli fields, and they are expected to have masses $m_ϕ$ comparable to the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}$ which is in a range of $10^{-2}$keV--1GeV in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking theories. Such light fields with weak interactions suppressed by the Planck scale can not avoid some stringent cosmological constraints, that is, they suffer from `cosmological moduli problems'. We show that all the gravitino mass region $10^{-2}$keV $\lesssim m_{3/2} \lesssim$ 1GeV is excluded by the constraints even if we incorporate a late-time mini-inflation (thermal inflation). However, a modification of the original thermal inflation model enables the region $10^{-2}$keV $\lesssim m_{3/2} \lesssim$ 500keV to survive the constraints. It is also stressed that the moduli can be dark matter in our universe for the mass region $10^{-2}$keV $\lesssim m_ϕ\lesssim$ 100keV.

Superheavy Dark Matter with Discrete Gauge Symmetries

We show that there are discrete gauge symmetries protect naturally heavy X particles from decaying into the ordinary light particles in the supersymmetric standard model. This makes the proposal very attractive that the superheavy X particles constitute a part of the dark matter in the present universe. It is more interesting that there are a class of discrete gauge symmetries which naturally accommodate a long-lived unstable X particle. We find that in some discrete Z_{10} models, for example, a superheavy X particle has lifetime τ_X \simeq 10^{11}-10^{26} years for its mass M_X \simeq 10^{13}-10^{14} GeV. This long lifetime is guaranteed by the absence of lower dimensional operators (of light particles) couple to the X. We briefly discuss a possible explanation for the recently observed ultra-high-energy cosmic ray events by the decay of this unstable X particle.

Gravitino Overproduction through Moduli Decay

We derive cosmological constraints on the masses of generic scalar fields which decay only through gravitationally suppressed interactions into unstable gravitinos and ordinary particles in the supersymmetric standard model. For the gravitino mass 100GeV-1TeV, the scalar masses should be larger than 100TeV to keep the success of big-bang nucleosynthesis if no late-time entropy production dilutes the gravitino density.

Adjoint Messengers and Perturbative Unification at the String Scale

We consider states in the adjoint representation of the Standard Model gauge group as messengers for mediation of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. These new messengers can shift the gauge coupling unification to the string scale at O(5x10^{17} GeV) if their masses are at O(10^{14} GeV). The predicted SUSY mass spectrum at the electroweak scale is significantly different from those in other gauge-mediated or supergravity models, resulting in robust mass relations. The gravitino mass is predicted to be about 1-10 GeV. The heavy messenger sector could provide a superheavy dark matter candidate.

Axion Cosmology with its Scalar Superpartner

In supersymmetric theories, the Peccei-Quinn symmetry has a complex extension as a symmetry of the superpotential, so that the scalar potential always has an almost flat direction, the dilaton. We discuss how coherent oscillation of the dilaton affects axion cosmology. We stress that the dilaton decay, if its dominant mode is not into axions, releases large entropy at a late epoch of the Universe's evolution to dilute axion energy density and the upperbound of the decay constant is raised up to about $10^{15}$ GeV. The case of the M-theory axion is also discussed.
