A study of electron recombination using highly ionizing particles in the ArgoNeuT Liquid Argon TPC

Electron recombination in highly ionizing stopping protons and deuterons is studied in the ArgoNeuT detector. The data are well modeled by either a Birks model or a modified form of the Box model. The dependence of recombination on the track angle with respect to the electric field direction is much weaker than the predictions of the Jaffe columnar theory and by theoretical-computational simulations.

Dynamical excitations in the collision of 2D Bose-Einstein condensates

We carry out simulations of the collision of two components of an adiabatically divided, quasi-2D BEC. We identify under, over and critically damped regimes in the dipole oscillations of the components according to the balance of internal and centre-of-mass (c.m.) energies of the components and investigate the creation of internal excitations. We distinguish the behaviour of this system from previous studies of quasi-1D BEC's. In particular we note that the nature of the internal excitations is only essentially sensitive to an initial phase difference between the components in the overdamped regime.

Analysis of a Large Sample of Neutrino-Induced Muons with the ArgoNeuT Detector

ArgoNeuT, or Argon Neutrino Test, is a 170 liter liquid argon time projection chamber designed to collect neutrino interactions from the NuMI beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. ArgoNeuT operated in the NuMI low-energy beam line directly upstream of the MINOS Near Detector from September 2009 to February 2010, during which thousands of neutrino and antineutrino events were collected. The MINOS Near Detector was used to measure muons downstream of ArgoNeuT. Though ArgoNeuT is primarily an R&D project, the data collected provide a unique opportunity to measure neutrino cross sections in the 0.1-10 GeV energy range. Fully reconstructing the muon from these interactions is imperative for these measurements. This paper focuses on the complete kinematic reconstruction of neutrino-induced through-going muons tracks. Analysis of this high statistics sample of minimum ionizing tracks demonstrates the reliability of the geometric and calorimetric reconstruction in the ArgoNeuT detector.

The ArgoNeuT Detector in the NuMI Low-Energy beam line at Fermilab

The ArgoNeuT liquid argon time projection chamber has collected thousands of neutrino and antineutrino events during an extended run period in the NuMI beam-line at Fermilab. This paper focuses on the main aspects of the detector layout and related technical features, including the cryogenic equipment, time projection chamber, read-out electronics, and off-line data treatment. The detector commissioning phase, physics run, and first neutrino event displays are also reported. The characterization of the main working parameters of the detector during data-taking, the ionization electron drift velocity and lifetime in liquid argon, as obtained from through-going muon data complete the present report.

First Measurements of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections on Argon

The ArgoNeuT collaboration presents the first measurements of inclusive muon neutrino charged current differential cross sections on argon. Obtained in the NuMI neutrino beamline at Fermilab, the results are reported in terms of outgoing muon angle and momentum. The data are consistent with the Monte Carlo expectation across the full range of kinematics sampled, $0^\circ$$<θ_μ$$<36^\circ$ and 0$<P_μ$$<25$ GeV/c. Along with confirming the viability of liquid argon time projection chamber technology for neutrino detection, the measurements allow tests of low energy neutrino scattering models important for interpreting results from long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments designed to investigate CP violation and the orientation of the neutrino mass hierarchy.

Influences of Si sheet doping densities on the morphological, conductive and optical characteristics of InAs/GaAs quantum dots

The influences of Si sheet doping levels on the properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL). AFM measurements reveal that Si sheet doping doesn't change the morphology of InAs QDs. Conductive AFM exhibits a quick current decrease when the Si doping density reaches 5\times1011cm-2. PL measurements show that the Si doping can significantly enhance the PL intensity. The PL peak intensity of InAs QDs doped to 5\times1011cm-2 is increased about thirty-five times from that of the undoped ones at 300K. The results observed here can be explained by a supposed positive-charged, strain-relaxed Si-doped thin InAs layer inside the InAs QDs.

Magnetization Vorticity and Exchange Bias Phenomena in Arrays of Small Asymmetric Magnetic Rings

Arrays of nanoscopic magnetic asymmetric rings, 150 nm in outer diameter, are fabricated using the techniques of electron-beam lithography, angular deposition and ion-beam etching. Magnetic measurements for cobalt asymmetric rings at room temperature verifies previous reports of vortex magnetic state formation of a desired circulation direction for the application of external magnetic field along the asymmetry axis of the rings. However, the main theme of this article is the observation of exchange bias phenomena when the ring samples are cooled down to low temperature in the presence of a positive magnetic field. Very interestingly, the observed exchange bias effect is negative for along and perpendicular orientations of ring's asymmetry axis with respect to the in-plane external magnetic field. This is in good quantitative agreement with the random interface model proposed by Malozemoff et al. For the application of inplane external magnetic field at 45 degree with respect to the asymmetry axis, the exchange bias effect is positive. Unlike the exchange bias effects in thin films, this is a very unusual observation indicating that exchange bias phenomena of opposite natures can be manipulated by appropriate combination of geometrical constraint and external magnetic field direction, in addition to the interfacial interactions between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer.

The GENIE Neutrino Monte Carlo Generator

GENIE is a new neutrino event generator for the experimental neutrino physics community. The goal of the project is to develop a `canonical' neutrino interaction physics Monte Carlo whose validity extends to all nuclear targets and neutrino flavors from MeV to PeV energy scales. Currently, emphasis is on the few-GeV energy range, the challenging boundary between the non-perturbative and perturbative regimes, which is relevant for the current and near future long-baseline precision neutrino experiments using accelerator-made beams. The design of the package addresses many challenges unique to neutrino simulations and supports the full life-cycle of simulation and generator-related analysis tasks. GENIE is a large-scale software system, consisting of 120,000 lines of C++ code, featuring a modern object-oriented design and extensively validated physics content. The first official physics release of GENIE was made available in August 2007, and at the time of the writing of this article, the latest available version was v2.4.4.

A Hadronization Model for Few-GeV Neutrino Interactions

We present a detailed description of a new hadronic multiparticle production model for use in neutrino interaction simulations. Its validity spans a wide invariant mass range starting from pion production threshold. This model focuses on the low invariant mass region which is probed in few-GeV neutrino interactions and is of particular importance to neutrino oscillation experiments using accelerator and atmospheric fluxes. It exhibits reasonable agreement with a wide variety of experimental data. We also describe measurements that can be made in upcoming experiments that can improve modeling in areas where uncertainties are currently large.

Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type violation of local realism by mixed states

Cluster states are multi-particle entangled states with special entanglement properties particularly suitable for quantum computation. It has been shown that cluster states can exhibit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ)-type non-locality even when some of their qubits have been lost. In the present work, we generated a four-photon mixed state, which is equivalent to the partial, qubit-loss state of an N-qubit cluster state up to some local transformations. By using this mixed state, we then realize a GHZ-type violation of local realism. Our results not only demonstrate a mixed state's GHZ-type non-locality but also exhibit the robustness of cluster states under qubit-loss conditions.

Current-induced vortex-vortex switching in a nanopillar comprising two Co nano-rings

We fabricated a current-perpendicular-to-plane pseudo-spin-valve nanopillar comprising a thick and a thin Co rings with deep submicron lateral sizes. The dc current can effectively induce the flux-closure vortex states in the rings with desired chiralities. Abrupt transitions between the vortex states are also realized by the dc current and detected with the giant magnetoresistance effect. Both Oersted field and spin-transfer torque are found important to the magnetic transitions, but the former is dominant. They can be designed to cooperate with each other in the vortex-to-vortex transitions by carefully setting the chirality of the vortex state in the thick Co ring.

Magnetic characterization and switching of Co nano-rings in current-perpendicular-to-plane configuration

We fabricated Co nano-rings incorporated in the vertical pseudo-spin-valve nanopillar structures with deep submicron lateral sizes. It is shown that the current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magnetoresistance can be used to characterize a very small magnetic nano-ring effectively. Both the onion state and the flux-closure vortex state are observed. The Co nano-rings can be switched between the onion states as well as between onion and vortex states not only by the external field but also by the perpendicularly injected dc current.

Experimental Fault-Tolerant Quantum Cryptography in a Decoherence-Free Subspace

we experimentally implement a fault-tolerant quantum key distribution protocol with two photons in a decoherence-free subspace (DFS). It is demonstrated that our protocol can yield good key rate even with large bit-flip error rate caused by collective rotation, while the usual realization of BB84 protocol cannot produce any secure final key given the same channel. Since the experiment is performed in polarization space and does not need the calibration of reference frame, important applications in free-space quantum communication are expected. Moreover, our method can also be used to robustly transmit an arbitrary two-level quantum state in a type of DFS.

3-dimensional distribution of spin-polarized current: application to (Cu/Co) pillar structures

We present a formalism determining spin-polarized current and electrochemical potential inside arbitrary electric circuit within diffusive regime for parallel/antiparallel magnetic states. When arbitrary nano-structure is expressed by 3-dimensional (3D) electric circuit, we can determine 3D spin-polarized current and electrochemical potential distributions inside it. We apply this technique to (Cu/Co) pillar structures, where pillar is terminated either by infinitely large Cu layer, or by Cu wire with identical cross-sectional area as pillar itself. We found that infinitely large Cu layers work as a strong spin-scatterers, increasing magnitude of spin-polarized current inside the pillar twice and reducing spin accumulation nearly to zero. As most experimentally studied pillar structures are terminated by such a infinitely large layers, we propose modification of standard Valet-Fert formalism to simply include influence of such infinitely large layers.

Improvement of dielectric loss of doped Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films for tunable microwave devices

Al2O3-Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (Al2O3-BST) thin films, with different Al2O3 contents, were deposited on (100) LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The Al2O3-BST films was demosnstrated to be a suitable systems to fabricate ferroelectric thin films with low dielectric loss and higher figure of merit for tunable microwave devices. Pure BST thin films were also fabricated for comparison purpose. The films' structure and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffractiopn and scanning electron microscopy, respectively; nad showed that the surface roughness for the Al2O3-BST films increased with the Al2O3 content. Apart from that, the broadening in the intensity peak in XRD result indicating the grain size of the Al2O3-BST films reduced with the increasing of Al2O3 dopant. We measured the dielctric properties of Al2O3-BST films with a home-made non-destructive dual resonator method at frequency ~ 7.7 GHZ. The effect of doped Al2O3 into BST thin films significantly reduced the dielectric constant, dielectric loss and tunability compare to pure BST thin film. Our result shows the figure of merit (K), used to compare the films with varied dielectric properties, increased with the Al2O3 content. Therefore Al2O3-BST films show the potential to be exploited in tunable microwave devices.

The high-energy gamma-ray fluence and energy spectrum of GRB 970417a from observations with Milagrito

Evidence of TeV emission from GRB970417a has been previously reported using data from the Milagrito detector. Constraints on the TeV fluence and the energy spectrum are now derived using additional data from a scaler system that recorded the rate of signals from the Milagrito photomultipliers. This analysis shows that if emission from GRB970417a has been observed, it must contain photons with energies above 650 GeV. Some consequences of this observation are discussed.

Derivatives of Eisenstein series and Faltings heights

We prove a relation between a generating series for the heights of Heegner cycles on the arithmetic surface associated to a Shimura curve and the second term in the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 of an Eisenstein series of weight 3/2 for SL(2). On the geometric side, a typical coefficient of the generating series involves the Faltings heights of abelian surfaces isogenous to a product of CM elliptic curves, an archimedean contribution, and contributions from vertical components in the fibers of bad reduction. On the analytic side, these terms arise via the derivatives of local Whittaker functions. It should be noted that s=1/2 is not the central point for the functional equation of the Eisenstein series in question. Moreover, the first term of the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 coincides with the generating function for the degrees of the Heegner cycles on the generic fiber, and, in particular, does not vanish.

Evidence for TeV Emission from GRB 970417a

Milagrito, a detector sensitive to very high energy gamma rays, monitored the northern sky from February 1997 through May 1998. With a large field of view and a high duty cycle, this instrument was well suited to perform a search for TeV gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We report on a search made for TeV counterparts to GRBs observed by BATSE. BATSE detected 54 GRBs within the field of view of Milagrito during this period. An excess of events coincident in time and space with one of these bursts, GRB 970417a, was observed by Milagrito. The excess has a chance probability of $2.8 \times 10^{-5}$ of being a fluctuation of the background. The probability for observing an excess at least this large from any of the 54 bursts is $1.5 \times 10^{-3}$. No significant correlations were detected from the other bursts.
