The large-$m$ limit, and spin liquid correlations in kagome-like spin models

It is noted that the pair correlation matrix $\hatχ$ of the nearest neighbor Ising model on periodic three-dimensional ($d=3$) kagome-like lattices of corner-sharing triangles can be calculated partially exactly. Specifically, a macroscopic number $1/3 \, N+1$ out of $N$ eigenvalues of $\hatχ$ are degenerate at all temperatures $T$, and correspond to an eigenspace $\mathbb{L}_{-}$ of $\hatχ$, independent of $T$. Degeneracy of the eigenvalues, and $\mathbb{L}_{-}$ are an exact result for a complex $d=3$ statistical physical model. It is further noted that the eigenvalue degeneracy describing the same $\mathbb{L}_{-}$ is exact at all $T$ in an infinite spin dimensionality $m$ limit of the isotropic $m$-vector approximation to the Ising models. A peculiar match of the opposite $m=1$ and $m\rightarrow \infty$ limits can be interpreted that the $m\rightarrow\infty$ considerations are exact for $m=1$. It is not clear whether the match is coincidental. It is then speculated that the exact eigenvalues degeneracy in $\mathbb{L}_{-}$ in the opposite limits of $m$ can imply their quasi-degeneracy for intermediate $1 \leqslant m < \infty$. For an anti-ferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling, that renders kagome-like models highly geometrically frustrated, these are spin states largely from $\mathbb{L}_{-}$ that for $m\geqslant 2$ contribute to $\hatχ$ at low $T$. The $m\rightarrow\infty$ formulae can be thus quantitatively correct in description of $\hatχ$ and clarifying the role of perturbations in kagome-like systems deep in the collective paramagnetic regime. An exception may be an interval of $T$, where the order-by-disorder mechanisms select sub-manifolds of $\mathbb{L}_{-}$.

Refrustration and competing orders in the prototypical Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice material

Spin ices, frustrated magnetic materials analogous to common water ice, are exemplars of high frustration in three dimensions. Recent experimental studies of the low-temperature properties of the paradigmatic Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ spin ice material, in particular whether the predicted transition to long-range order occurs, raise questions as per the currently accepted microscopic model of this system. In this work, we combine Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field theory calculations to analyze data from magnetization, elastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements on Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We also reconsider the possible importance of the nuclear specific heat, $C_{\rm nuc}$, in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We find that $C_{\rm nuc}$ is not entirely negligible below a temperature $\sim 0.5$ K and must be taken into account in a quantitative analysis of the calorimetric data of this compound below that temperature. We find that small effective exchange interactions compete with the magnetostatic dipolar interaction responsible for the main spin ice phenomenology. This causes an unexpected "refrustration" of the long-range order that would be expected from the incompletely self-screened dipolar interaction and which positions the material at the boundary between two competing classical long-range ordered ground states. This allows for the manifestation of new physical low-temperature phenomena in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, as exposed by recent specific heat measurements. We show that among the four most likely causes for the observed upturn of the specific heat at low temperature -- an exchange-induced transition to long-range order, quantum non-Ising (transverse) terms in the effective spin Hamiltonian, the nuclear hyperfine contribution and random disorder -- only the last appears to be reasonably able to explain the calorimetric data.

Perturbative Quantum Monte Carlo Study of LiHoF4 in a Transverse Magnetic Field

P.B. Chakraborty {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 144411 (2004)) study of the LiHoF$_4$ Ising magnetic material in an external transverse magnetic field $B_x$ show a discrepancy with the experimental results, even for small $B_x$ where quantum fluctuations are small. This discrepancy persists asymptotically close to the classical ferromagnet to paramagnet phase transition. In this paper, we numerically reinvestigate the temperature $T$, versus transverse field phase diagram of LiHoF$_4$ in the regime of weak $B_x$. In this regime, starting from an effective low-energy spin-1/2 description of LiHoF$_4$, we apply a cumulant expansion to derive an effective temperature-dependent classical Hamiltonian that incorporates perturbatively the small quantum fluctuations in the vicinity of the classical phase transition at $B_x=0$. Via this effective classical Hamiltonian, we study the $B_x-T$ phase diagram via classical Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we investigate the influence on the phase diagram of various effects that may be at the source of the discrepancy between the previous QMC results and the experimental ones. For example, we consider two different ways of handling the long-range dipole-dipole interactions and explore how the $B_x-T$ phase diagram is modified when using different microscopic crystal field Hamiltonians. The main conclusion of our work is that we fully reproduce the previous QMC results at small $B_x$. Unfortunately, none of the modifications to the microscopic Hamiltonian that we explore are able to provide a $B_x-T$ phase diagram compatible with the experiments in the small semi-classical $B_x$ regime.

Heisenberg antiferromagnet with anisotropic exchange on the Kagome lattice: Description of the magnetic properties of volborthite

We study the properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spatially anisotropic nearest-neighbour exchange couplings on the kagome net, i.e. with coupling J in one lattice direction and couplings J' along the other two directions. For J/J' > 1, this model is believed to describe the magnetic properties of the mineral volborthite. In the classical limit, it exhibits two kinds of ground states: a ferrimagnetic state for J/J' < 1/2 and a large manifold of canted spin states for J/J' > 1/2. To include quantum effects self-consistently, we investigate the Sp(N) symmetric generalisation of the original SU(2) symmetric model in the large-N limit. In addition to the dependence on the anisotropy, the Sp(N) symmetric model depends on a parameter kappa that measures the importance of quantum effects. Our numerical calculations reveal that in the kappa-J/J' plane, the system shows a rich phase diagram containing a ferrimagnetic phase, an incommensurate phase, and a decoupled chain phase, the latter two with short- and long-range order. We corroborate these results by showing that the boundaries between the various phases and several other features of the Sp(N) phase diagram can be determined by analytical calculations. Finally, the application of a block-spin perturbation expansion to the trimerised version of the original spin-1/2 model leads us to suggest that in the limit of strong anisotropy, J/J' >> 1, the ground state of the original model is a collinearly ordered antiferromagnet, which is separated from the incommensurate state by a quantum phase transition.

Spatially anisotropic Heisenberg Kagome antiferromagnet

In the search for spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, the mineral volborthite has recently been the subject of experimental studies [Hiroi et al.,2001]. It has been suggested that the magnetic properties of this material are described by a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with spatially anisotropic exchange couplings. We report on investigations of the Sp(N) symmetric generalisation of this model in the large N limit. We obtain a detailed description of the dependence of possible ground states on the anisotropy and on the spin length S. A fairly rich phase diagram with a ferrimagnetic phase, incommensurate phases with and without long range order and a decoupled chain phase emerges.

Neutron Scattering Investigation of the Spin Ice State in Dy2Ti2O7

Dy2Ti2O7 has been advanced as an ideal spin ice. We present a neutron scattering investigation of a sample of 162Dy2Ti2O7. The scattering intensity has been mapped in zero applied field in the hhl and hk0 planes at temperatures between 0.05 K and 20 K. The measured diffuse scattering (in the static approximation) has been compared to that predicted by the dipolar spin ice model. The comparison is good, except at the Brillouin zone boundaries where extra scattering appears in the experimental data. It is concluded that the dipolar spin ice model provides a successful basis for understanding Dy2Ti2O7, but that there are issues which remain to be clarified.

Universality classes of three-dimensional $mn$-vector model

We study the conditions under which the critical behavior of the three-dimensional $mn$-vector model does not belong to the spherically symmetrical universality class. In the calculations we rely on the field-theoretical renormalization group approach in different regularization schemes adjusted by resummation and extended analysis of the series for renormalization-group functions which are known for the model in high orders of perturbation theory. The phase diagram of the three-dimensional $mn$-vector model is built marking out domains in the $mn$-plane where the model belongs to a given universality class.

Weak quenched disorder and criticality: resummation of asymptotic(?) series

In these lectures, we discuss the influence of weak quenched disorder on the critical behavior in condensed matter and give a brief review of available experimental and theoretical results as well as results of MC simulations of these phenomena. We concentrate on three cases: (i) uncorrelated random-site disorder, (ii) long-range-correlated random-site disorder, and (iii) random anisotropy. Today, the standard analytical description of critical behavior is given by renormalization group results refined by resummation of the perturbation theory series. The convergence properties of the series are unknown for most disordered models. The main object of these lectures is to discuss the peculiarities of the application of resummation techniques to perturbation theory series of disordered models.

A Marginal Dimension of a Weakly Diluted Quenched m-Vector Model

We calculate a marginal order parameter dimension $m_c$ which in a weakly diluted quenched $m$-vector model controls the crossover from a universality class of a ``pure'' model ($m>m_c$) to a new universality class ($m<m_c$). Exploiting the Harris criterion and the field-theoretical renormalization group approach allows us to obtain $m_c$ as a five-loop $ε$-expansion as well as a six-loop pseudo-$ε$ expansion. In order to estimate the numerical value of $m_c$ we process the series by precisely adjusted Padé--Borel--Leroy resummation procedures. Our final result $m_c=1.912\pm0.004<2$ stems from the longer and more reliable pseudo-$ε$ expansion, suggesting that a weak quenched disorder does not change the values of $xy$-model critical exponents as it follows from the experiments on critical properties of ${\rm He}^4$ in porous media.

Critical exponents of a three dimensional weakly diluted quenched Ising model

We discuss universal and non-universal critical exponents of a three dimensional Ising system in the presence of weak quenched disorder. Both experimental, computational, and theoretical results are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the results obtained by the field theoretical renormalization group approach. Different renormalization schemes are considered putting emphasis on analysis of divergent series obtained.

Pseudo--epsilon expansion of six--loop renormalization group functions of an anisotropic cubic model

Six-loop massive scheme renormalization group functions of a d=3-dimensional cubic model (J.M. Carmona, A. Pelissetto, and E. Vicari, Phys. Rev. B vol. 61, 15136 (2000)) are reconsidered by means of the pseudo-epsilon expansion. The marginal order parameter components number N_c=2.862(5) as well as critical exponents of the cubic model are obtained. Our estimate N_c<3 leads in particular to the conclusion that all ferromagnetic cubic crystals with three easy axis should undergo a first order phase transition.

Effective and Asymptotic Critical Exponents of Weakly Diluted Quenched Ising Model: 3d Approach Versus $ε^{1/2}$-Expansion

We present a field-theoretical treatment of the critical behavior of three-dimensional weakly diluted quenched Ising model. To this end we analyse in a replica limit n=0 5-loop renormalization group functions of the $ϕ^4$-theory with O(n)-symmetric and cubic interactions (H.Kleinert and V.Schulte-Frohlinde, Phys.Lett. B342, 284 (1995)). The minimal subtraction scheme allows to develop either the $ε^{1/2}$-expansion series or to proceed in the 3d approach, performing expansions in terms of renormalized couplings. Doing so, we compare both perturbation approaches and discuss their convergence and possible Borel summability. To study the crossover effect we calculate the effective critical exponents providing a local measure for the degree of singularity of different physical quantities in the critical region. We report resummed numerical values for the effective and asymptotic critical exponents. Obtained within the 3d approach results agree pretty well with recent Monte Carlo simulations. $ε^{1/2}$-expansion does not allow reliable estimates for d=3.

The correction-to-scaling exponent in dilute systems

The leading correction-to-scaling exponent $ω$ for the three-dimensional dilute Ising model is calculated in the framework of the field theoretic renormalization group approach. Both in the minimal subtraction scheme as well as in the massive field theory (resummed four loop expansion) excellent agreement with recent Monte Carlo calculations [Ballesteros H G, et al Phys. Rev. B 58, 2740 (1998)] is achieved. The expression of $ω$ as series in a $\sqrtε$-expansion up to ${\cal O}(ε^2)$ does not allow a reliable estimate for $d=3$.

Critical exponents of the diluted Ising model between dimensions 2 and 4

Within the massive field theoretical renormalization group approach the expressions for the beta- and gamma-functions of the anisotropic mn-vector model are obtained for general space dimension d in three-loop approximation. Resumming corresponding asymptotic series, critical exponents for the case of the weakly diluted quenched Ising model (m=1, n=0), as well as estimates for the marginal order parameter component number m_c of the weakly diluted quenched m-vector model are calculated as functions of d in the region 2 =< d <4. Conclusions concerning the effectiveness of different resummation techniques are drawn.
