Theory of Josephson effect in chiral p-wave superconductor / diffusive normal metal / chiral p-wave superconductor junctions

We study the Josephson effect between chiral p-wave superconductor / diffusive normal metal (DN) / chiral p-wave superconductor (CP/DN/CP) junctions using quasiclassical Green's function formalism with proper boundary conditions. The px+ipy-wave symmetry of superconducting order parameter is chosen which is believed to be a pairing state in Sr2RuO4. It is shown that the Cooper pairs induced in DN have an odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave symmetry, where pair amplitude is an odd function of Matsubara frequency. Despite the peculiar symmetry properties of the Cooper pairs, the behavior of the Josephson current is rather conventional. We have found that the current phase relation is almost sinusoidal and the Josephson current is proportional to exp(-L/xi), where xi is the coherence length of the Cooper pair in DN and L is the length of DN. The Josephson current between CP / diffusive ferromagnet metal (DF) / CP junctions is also calculated. It is shown that the 0-pi transition can be realized by varying temperature or junction length L similar to the case of conventional s-wave junctions. These results may serve as a guide to study superconducting state of Sr2RuO4.

Theory of Josephson effect in unconventional superconducting junctions with diffusive barriers

We study theoretically the Josephson effect in junctions based on unconventional superconductors with diffusive barriers, using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. Generalized boundary conditions at junction interfaces applicable to unconventional superconductors are derived by calculating a matrix current within the circuit transport theory. Applying these boundary conditions, we have calculated the Josephson current in structures with various pairing symmetries. A number of predictions are made: (a) nonmonotonic temperature dependence in d-wave superconductor/diffusive normal metal/d-wave superconductor (D/DN/D) junctions, (b) anomalous current-phase relation in $p $-wave superconductor/diffusive normal metal/$p$% -wave superconductor (P/DN/P) junctions, (c) second harmonics in D/DN/D and P/DN/P junctions, (d) a double peak structure of the critical current in D/DF/D junctions, (e) enhanced Josephson current by the exchange field in S/DF/P junctions. We have also investigated peculiarities of the Josephson coupling in D/DF/D, P/DF/P and S/DF/P junctions. An oscillatory behavior of the supercurrent and the second harmonics in the current-phase relation are studied as a function of the length of the diffusive ferromagnet.

Angular dependence of Josephson currents in unconventional superconducting junctions

Josephson effect in junctions between unconventional superconductors is studied theoretically within the model describing the effects of interface roughness. The particularly important issue of applicability of the frequently used Sigrist-Rice formula for Josephson current in d-wave superconductor / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is addressed. We show that although the SR formula is not applicable in the ballistic case, it works well for rough interfaces when the diffusive normal metal regions exist between the d-wave superconductor and the insulator. It is shown that the SR approach only takes into account the component of the d-wave pair potential symmetric with respect to an inversion around the plane perpendicular to the interface. Similar formula can be derived for general unconventional superconductors with arbitrary angular momentum l.

Manifestation of the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing state in diffusive ferromagnet / superconductor junctions

Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we study the influence of the odd-frequency spin-triplet superconductivity on the local density of states (LDOS) in a diffusive ferromagnet (DF) attached to a superconductor. Various possible symmetry classes in a superconductor are considered which are consistent with the Pauli's principle: even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) state, even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) state, odd-frequency spin-triplet even-parity (OTE) state and odd-frequency spin-singlet odd-parity (OSO) state. For each of these states, the pairing state in DF is studied. Particular attention is paid to the study of spin-singlet s-wave and spin-triplet p-wave superconductors as the examples of ESE and ETO superconductors. For spin-singlet case the magnitude of the OTE component of the pair amplitude is enhanced with the increase of the exchange field in DF. When the OTE component is dominant at low energy, the resulting LDOS in DF has a zero energy peak (ZEP). On the other hand, in DF / spin-triplet p-wave superconductor junctions LDOS has a ZEP in the absence of the exchange field, where only the OTE paring state exists. With the increase of the exchange field, the ESE component of the pair amplitude induced in DF is enhanced. Then, the resulting LDOS has a ZEP splitting. We demonstrate that the appearance of the dominant OTE component of the pair amplitude is the physical reason of the emergence of the ZEP of LDOS.

Nonmonotonic temperature dependence of critical current in diffusive d-wave junctions

We study the Josephson effect in D/I/DN/I/D junctions, where I, DN and D denote an insulator, a diffusive normal metal and a d-wave superconductor, respectively. The Josephson current is calculated based on the quasiclassical Green's function theory with a general boundary condition for unconventional superconducting junctions. In contrast to s-wave junctions, the product of the Josephson current and the normal state resistance is enhanced by making the interface barriers stronger. The Josephson current has a nonmonotonic temperature dependence due to the competition between the proximity effect and the midgap Andreev resonant states.

Charge transport in two dimensional electron gas/superconductor junctions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We have studied the tunneling conductance in two dimensional electron gas / insulator / superconductor junctions in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC). It is found that for low insulating barrier the tunneling conductance is suppressed by the RSOC while for high insulating barrier it is almost independent of the RSOC. We also find the reentrant behavior of the conductance at zero voltage as a function of RSOC for intermediate insulating barrier strength. The results are essentially different from those predicted in ferromagnet / superconductor junctions. The present derivation of the conductance is applicable to arbitrary velocity operator with off-diagonal components.

Spin-polarized proximity effect in superconducting junctions

We study spin dependent phonomena in superconducting junctions in both ballistic and diffusive regimes. For ballistic junctions we study both ferromagnet / $s$- and d-wave superconductor junctions and two dimensional electron gas / s-wave superconductor junctions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the exchange field alway suppresses the conductance while the Rashba spin-orbit coupling can enhance it. In the latter part of the article we study the diffusive ferromagnet / insulator / $s$- and d-wave superconductor junctions, where the proximity effect can be enhanced by the exchange field in contrast to common belief. It is shown that the resonant proximity effect originating from the exchange field strongly influences the tunneling conductance and density of states.

Resonant peak in the density of states in the normal metal / diffusive ferromagnet / superconductor junctions

The conditions for the formation of zero-energy peak in the density of states (DOS) in the normal metal / insulator / diffusive ferromagnet / insulator / s-wave superconductor (N/I/DF/I/S) junctions are studied by solving the Usadel equations. The DOS of the DF is calculated in various regimes for different magnitudes of the resistance, Thouless energy and the exchange field of the DF, as well as for various resistances of the insulating barriers. The conditions for the DOS peak are formulated for the cases of weak proximity effect (large resistance of the DF/S interface) and strong proximity effect (small resistance of the DF/S interface).

Intrinsically s-wave like property of triplet superconductors with spin-orbit coupling

We have studied a general property of unconventional superconductors with spin-orbit coupling by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and found that the two of four eigenfunctions for triplet pairing coincide with those for s-wave pairing when a relation holds between pairing symmetry and spin-orbit coupling, indicative of an intrinsically s-wave like property of triplet superconductors. Applying the result, we have studied the tunneling conductance in normal metal / insulator / unconventional superconductor junctions with a candidate of pairing symmetry of CePt$_3$Si. The effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) is taken into account. We have found that the RSOC induces a peak at the energy gap like s-wave superconductors in the tunneling spectrum.

Resonant proximity effect in the normal metal / insulator / diffusive ferromagnet / insulator / $s$- and d-wave superconductor (N/I/DF/I/S) junctions is studied for various regimes by solving the Usadel equation with the generalized boundary conditions. It is shown that the resonant proximity effect originating from the exchange field in DF layer strongly modifies the tunneling conductance and density of states.

Meissner effect in diffusive normal metal / d-wave superconductor junctions

The Meissner effect in diffusive normal metal / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is studied theoretically in the framework of the Usadel equation under the generalized boundary condition. The effect of midgap Andreev resonant states (MARS) formed at the interface of d-wave superconductor is taken into account. It is shown that the formation of MARS suppresses the susceptibility of the diffusive normal metal.

Theory of thermal and charge transport in diffusive normal metal / superconductor junctions

Thermal and charge transport in the diffusive normal metal(DN) / insulator / $s$-, $d$- and p-wave superconductor junctions are studied for various situations, where we have used the Usadel equation with Nazarov's generalized boundary condition. Thermal and electrical conductance of the junction and the Lorentz ratio are calculated by varying the magnitudes of the resistance, the Thouless energy and the magnetic scattering rate in DN, the transparency of the insulating barrier, and the angle between the normal to the interface and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors or the angle between the normal to the interface and the lobe direction of the p-wave pair potential. New general expression is derived for the calculation of the thermal conductance. It is demonstrated that the proximity effect doesn't influence the thermal conductance while the mid gap Andreev resonant states suppress it. We have also discussed a possibility of distinguishing pairing symmetries based on the dependencies of the electrical and thermal conductance on temperatures.

Influence of magnetic impurities on charge transport in diffusive-normal-metal / superconductor junctions

Charge transport in the diffusive normal metal (DN) / insulator / $s$- and $% d $-wave superconductor junctions is studied in the presence of magnetic impurities in DN in the framework of the quasiclassical Usadel equations with the generalized boundary conditions. The cases of $s$- and d-wave superconducting electrodes are considered. The junction conductance is calculated as a function of a bias voltage for various parameters of the DN metal: resistivity, Thouless energy, the magnetic impurity scattering rate and the transparency of the insulating barrier between DN and a superconductor. It is shown that the proximity effect is suppressed by magnetic impurity scattering in DN for any value of the barrier transparency. In low-transparent s-wave junctions this leads to the suppression of the normalized zero-bias conductance. In contrast to that, in high transparent junctions zero-bias conductance is enhanced by magnetic impurity scattering. The physical origin of this effect is discussed. For the d-wave junctions, the dependence on the misorientation angle $α$ between the interface normal and the crystal axis of a superconductor is studied. The zero-bias conductance peak is suppressed by the magnetic impurity scattering only for low transparent junctions with $α\sim 0$. In other cases the conductance of the d-wave junctions does not depend on the magnetic impurity scattering due to strong suppression of the proximity effect by the midgap Andreev resonant states.

Theory of enhanced proximity effect by mid gap Andreev resonant state in diffusive normal metal / triplet superconductor junctions

Enhanced proximity effect by mid gap Andreev resonant state (MARS) in a diffusive normal metal / insulator / triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction is studied based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. By choosing a p-wave superconductor as a typical example of TS, conductance of the junction and the spatial variation of quasiparticle local density of states (LDOS) in DN are calculated as the function of the magnitudes of the resistance $R_{d}$, Thouless energy in DN and the transparency of the insulating barrier. The resulting conductance spectrum has a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and LDOS has a zero energy peak (ZEP) except for $α= π/2$ $(0 \leq α\leq π/2)$, where $α$ denotes the angle between the lobe direction of the p-wave pair potential to the normal to the interface. These peaks are revealed to be suppressed by applying a magnetic field. When the magnitude of $R_{d}/R_{0}$ is sufficiently large, the total zero voltage resistance of the junction is almost independent of the $R_{d}$ for $α\neq π/2$. The extreme case is $α=0$, where total zero voltage resistance is always $R_{0}/2$. Based on these results, a crucial test to identify triplet pairing superconductors based on tunneling experiments is proposed.

Magnetic Reconnection Triggered by the Parker Instability in the Galaxy: Two-Dimensional Numerical Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations and Application to the Origin of X-Ray Gas in the Galactic Halo

We propose the Galactic flare model for the origin of the X-ray gas in the Galactic halo. For this purpose, we examine the magnetic reconnection triggered by Parker instability (magnetic buoyancy instability), by performing the two-dimensional resistive numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations. As a result of numerical simulations, the system evolves as following phases: Parker instability occurs in the Galactic disk. In the nonlinear phase of Parker instability, the magnetic loop inflates from the Galactic disk into the Galactic halo, and collides with the anti-parallel magnetic field, so that the current sheets are created in the Galactic halo. The tearing instability occurs, and creates the plasmoids (magnetic islands). Just after the plasmoid ejection, further current-sheet thinning occurs in the sheet, and the anomalous resistivity sets in. Petschek reconnection starts, and heats the gas quickly in the Galactic halo. It also creates the slow and fast shock regions in the Galactic halo. The magnetic field ($B\sim 3 μ$G), for example, can heat the gas ($n\sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$) to temperature of $\sim 10^6$ K via the reconnection in the Galactic halo. The gas is accelerated to Alfvén velocity ($\sim 300$ km s$^{-1}$). Such high velocity jets are the evidence of the Galactic flare model we present in this paper, if the Doppler shift of the bipolar jet is detected in the Galactic halo. Periodic Acceleration of Electrons in the 1998 November 10 Solar Flare

We present an examination of the multi-wavelength observation of a C7.9 flare which occurred on 1998 November 10. This is the first time of imaging observation of the quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs). Four bursts were observed with the hard X-ray telescope aboard Yohkoh and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph during the impulsive phase of the flare. In the second burst, the hard X-ray and microwave time profiles clearly showed a QPP. We estimated the Alfven transit time along the flare loop using the images of the soft X-ray telescope aboard it Yohkoh and the photospheric magnetgrams, and found that the transit time was almost equal to the period of the QPP. We therefore suggest, based on a shock acceleration model, that variations of macroscopic magnetic structures, such as oscillations of coronal loops, affect the efficiency of particle injection/acceleration.
