Absorption Lines in the 0.91-1.33 $μ$m Spectra of Red Giants for Measuring Abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Ni

Red giants show a large number of absorption lines in both optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Still, the characteristics of the lines in different wave passbands are not necessarily the same. We searched for lines of Mg I, Si I, Ca I, Ti I, Cr I, and Ni I in the z', Y, and J bands (0.91-1.33 $μ$m), that are useful for precise abundance analyses, from two different compilations of lines, namely, the third release of Vienna Atomic Line Database (VALD3) and the catalog published by Melendez & Barbuy in 1999 (MB99). We selected sufficiently strong lines that are not severely blended and ended up with 191 lines (165 and 141 lines from VALD3 and MB99, respectively), in total, for the six elements. Combining our line lists with high-resolution (R = 28,000) and high signal-to-noise (higher than 500) spectra taken with the WINERED spectrograph, we measured the abundances of the six elements in addition to Fe I of two prototype red giants, i.e., Arcturus and mu Leo. The resultant abundances show reasonable agreements with literature values within $\sim$0.2 dex, indicating that the available oscillator strengths are acceptable, although the abundances based on the two line lists show systematic differences by 0.1-0.2 dex. Furthermore, to improve the precision, solid estimation of the microturbulence (or the microturbulences if they are different for different elements) is necessary as far as the classical hydrostatic atmosphere models are used for the analysis.

Radial spin texture in elemental tellurium with chiral crystal structure

The chiral crystal is characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and an inversion center, resulting in the inequivalent right- and left-handed structures. In the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the spin and momentum of electrons are locked in the reciprocal space with the help of the spin-orbit interaction. To reveal the spin textures of chiral crystals, here we investigate the spin and electronic structure in p-type semiconductor elemental tellurium with a chiral crystal structure by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data demonstrate that the highest valence band crossing the Fermi level has a spin component parallel to the electron momentum around the BZ corners. Significantly, we have also confirmed that the spin polarization is reversed in the crystal with the opposite chirality. The results indicate that the spin textures of the right- and left-handed chiral crystals are hedgehog-like, leading to unconventional magnetoelectric effects and nonreciprocal phenomena.

WINERED high-resolution near-infrared line catalog: A-type star

We present a catalog of absorption lines in the z', Y, and J bands that we identified in 21 Lyn, a slowly rotating A0.5 V star. We detected 155 absorption features in the high-resolution (0.90-1.35 um, R = 28,000) spectrum obtained with the WINERED spectrograph after the telluric absorption was carefully removed using a spectrum of a B-type star as a telluric standard. With a visual comparison with synthetic spectra, we compiled a catalog of 219 atomic lines for the 155 features, some of which are composed of multiple fine structure lines. The high-quality WINERED spectrum enabled us to detect a large number of weak lines down to ~1% in depth, which are identified for an A-type star for the first time. The catalog includes the lines of H, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Fe, and Sr. These new lines are expected to be useful for spectral classification and chemical abundance analyses, whilst the line list is useful for observers who plan to use A-type stars as telluric standards because it is necessary to distinguish between stellar lines and telluric absorption lines in high-resolution spectra. ASCII versions of the spectra are available in the online version of the journal.

On the chemical abundances of Miras in clusters: V1 in the metal-rich globular NGC 5927

We present the first spectroscopic abundance determination of iron, alpha-elements (Si, Ca and Ti) and sodium for the Mira variable V1 in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 5927. We use high-resolution (R~ 28,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (~200) spectra collected with WINERED, a near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph covering simultaneously the wavelength range 0.91--1.35 micron. The effective temperature and the surface gravity at the pulsation phase of the spectroscopic observation were estimated using both optical (V) and NIR time-series photometric data. We found that the Mira is metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.55 \pm 0.15) and moderately alpha-enhanced ([alpha/Fe]=0.15 \pm 0.01, sigma=0.2). These values agree quite well with the mean cluster abundances based on high-resolution optical spectra of several cluster red giants available in the literature ([Fe/H]=-0.47 \pm 0.06, [alpha/Fe]=+0.24 \pm 0.05). We also found a Na abundance of +0.35 \pm 0.20 that is higher than the mean cluster abundance based on optical spectra (+0.18 \pm 0.13). However, the lack of similar spectra for cluster red giants and that of corrections for departures from local-thermodynamical equilibrium prevents us from establishing whether the difference is intrinsic or connected with multiple populations. These findings indicate a strong similarity between optical and NIR metallicity scales in spite of the difference in the experimental equipment, data analysis and in the adopted spectroscopic diagnostics.

Experimental realization of type-II Weyl state in non-centrosymmetric TaIrTe$_4$

Recent breakthrough in search for the analogs of fundamental particles in condensed matter systems lead to experimental realizations of 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Weyl state can be hosted either by non-centrosymmetric or magnetic materials and can be of the first or the second type. Several non-centrosymmetric materials have been proposed to be type-II Weyl semimetals, but in all of them the Fermi arcs between projections of multiple Weyl points either have not been observed directly or they were hardly distinguishable from the trivial surface states which significantly hinders the practical application of these materials. Here we present experimental evidence for type-II non-centrosymmetric Weyl state in TaIrTe$_4$ where it has been predicted theoretically. We find direct correspondence between ARPES spectra and calculated electronic structure both in the bulk and the surface and clearly observe the exotic surface states which support the quasi-1D Fermi arcs connecting only four Weyl points. Remarkably, these electronic states are spin-polarized in the direction along the arcs, thus highlighting TaIrTe$_4$ as a novel material with promising application potential.

Star formation activity in Balmer break galaxies at $z$ < 1.5

Aims. We present a spectroscopic study of the properties of 64 Balmer break galaxies that show signs of star formation. The studied sample of star-forming galaxies spans a redshift range from 0.094 to 1.475 with stellar masses in the range 10$^{8}-$10$^{12}$ $M_{\odot}$. The sample also includes eight broad emission line galaxies with redshifts between 1.5 $<z<$ 3.0. Methods. We derived star formation rates (SFRs) from emission line luminosities and investigated the dependence of the SFR and specific SFR (SSFR) on the stellar mass and color. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of these relations with the redshift. Results. We found that the SFR correlates with the stellar mass, our data is consistent with previous results from other authors in that there is a break in the correlation, which reveals the presence of massive galaxies with lower SFR values (i.e., decreasing star formation). We also note an anticorrelation for the SSFR with the stellar mass. Again in this case, our data is also consistent with a break in the correlation, revealing the presence of massive star-forming galaxies with lower SSFR values, thereby increasing the anticorrelation. These results might suggest a characteristic mass ($M_{0}$) at which the red sequence could mostly be assembled. In addition, at a given stellar mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average higher SFR and SSFR values than local galaxies. Finally, we explored whether a similar trend could be observed with redshift in the SSFR$-(u-B)$ color diagram, and we hypothesize that a possible $(u-B)_{0}$ break color may define a characteristic color for the formation of the red sequence.

Physical Properties, Star Formation, and Active Galactic Nucleus Activity in Balmer Break Galaxies at 0 < z < 1

We present a spectroscopic study with the derivation of the physical properties of 37 Balmer break galaxies, which have the necessary lines to locate them in star-forming-AGN diagnostic diagrams. These galaxies span a redshift range from 0.045 to 0.93 and are somewhat less massive than similar samples of previous works. The studied sample has multiwavelength photometric data coverage from the ultraviolet to MIR Spitzer bands. We investigate the connection between star formation and AGN activity via optical, mass-excitation (MEx) and MIR diagnostic diagrams. Through optical diagrams, 31 (84%) star-forming galaxies, 2 (5%) composite galaxies and 3 (8%) AGNs were classified, whereas from the MEx diagram only one galaxy was classified as AGN. A total of 19 galaxies have photometry available in all the IRAC/Spitzer bands. Of these, 3 AGN candidates were not classified as AGN in the optical diagrams, suggesting they are dusty/obscured AGNs, or that nuclear star formation has diluted their contributions. Furthermore, the relationship between SFR surface density (Σ_{SFR}) and stellar mass surface density per time unit (Σ_{M_{\ast}/τ}) as a function of redshift was investigated using the [OII] \lambda3727, 3729, Hα\lambda6563 luminosities, which revealed that both quantities are larger for higher redshift galaxies. We also studied the SFR and SSFR versus stellar mass and color relations, with the more massive galaxies having higher SFR values but lower SSFR values than less massive galaxies. These results are consistent with previous ones showing that, at a given mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average larger SFR and SSFR values than low-redshift galaxies. Finally, bluer galaxies have larger SSFR values than redder galaxies and for a given color the SSFR is larger for higher redshift galaxies.

Ionization Source of a Minor-axis Cloud in the Outer Halo of M82

The M82 `cap' is a gas cloud at a projected radius of 11.6 kpc along the minor axis of this well known superwind source. The cap has been detected in optical line emission and X-ray emission and therefore provides an important probe of the wind energetics. In order to investigate the ionization source of the cap, we observed it with the Kyoto3DII Fabry-Perot instrument mounted on the Subaru Telescope. Deep continuum, Ha, [NII]6583/Ha, and [SII]6716,6731/Ha maps were obtained with sub-arcsecond resolution. The superior spatial resolution compared to earlier studies reveals a number of bright Ha emitting clouds within the cap. The emission line widths (< 100 km s^-1 FWHM) and line ratios in the newly identified knots are most reasonably explained by slow to moderate shocks velocities (v_shock = 40--80 km s^-1) driven by a fast wind into dense clouds. The momentum input from the M82 nuclear starburst region is enough to produce the observed shock. Consequently, earlier claims of photoionization by the central starburst are ruled out because they cannot explain the observed fluxes of the densest knots unless the UV escape fraction is very high (f_esc > 60%), i.e., an order of magnitude higher than observed in dwarf galaxies to date. Using these results, we discuss the evolutionary history of the M82 superwind. Future UV/X-ray surveys are expected to confirm that the temperature of the gas is consistent with our moderate shock model.

MOIRCS Deep Survey. VIII. Evolution of Star Formation Activity as a Function of Stellar Mass in Galaxies since z~3

We study the evolution of star formation activity of galaxies at 0.5 ~1. We found galaxies at 2.5 1 and becomes significant at z~3, especially in the case with the SFR based on MIPS 24um. In galaxies with Mstar = 10^{10-11.5} Msun, those with a relatively narrow range of SSFR (<~1 dex) dominates the cosmic SFRD at 0.5<z<3.5. The SSFR of galaxies which dominate the SFRD systematically increases with redshift. At 2.5<z<3.5, the high-SSFR population, which is relatively small in number, dominates the SFRD. Major star formation in the universe at higher redshift seems to be associated with a more rapid growth of stellar mass of galaxies.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super $B$ factory, an asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with a design luminosity of $8 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which is around 50 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented.

Unveiling the Nature of Submillimeter Galaxy SXDF850.6

We present an 880 micron Submillimeter Array (SMA) detection of the submillimeter galaxy SXDF850.6. SXDF850.6 is a bright source (S(850 micron) = 8 mJy) detected in the SCUBA Half Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES), and has multiple possible radio counterparts in its deep radio image obtained at the VLA. Our new SMA detection finds that the submm emission coincides with the brightest radio emission that is found ~8" north of the coordinates determined from SCUBA. Despite the lack of detectable counterparts in deep UV/optical images, we find a source at the SMA position in near-infrared and longer wavelength images. We perform SED model fits to UV-optical-IR photometry (u, B, V, R, i', z', J, H, K, 3.6 micron, 4.5 micron, 5.8 micron, and 8.0 micron) and to submm-radio photometry (850 micron, 880 micron, 1100 micron, and 21 cm) independently, and we find both are well described by starburst templates at a redshift of z ~= 2.2 (+/- 0.3). The best-fit parameters from the UV-optical-IR SED fit are a redshift of z = 1.87 (+0.15/-0.07), a stellar mass of M_star = 2.5 +2.2/-0.3 x 10^11 M_sun, an extinction of A_V = 3.0 (+0.3/-1.0) mag, and an age of 720 (+1880/-210) Myr. The submm-radio SED fit provides a consistent redshift of z ~ 1.8-2.5, an IR luminosity of L_IR = (7-26) x 10^12 L_sun, and a star formation rate of 1300-4500 M_sun/yr. These results suggest that SXDF850.6 is a mature system already having a massive amount of old stellar population constructed before its submm bright phase and is experiencing a dusty starburst, possibly induced by major mergers.

MOIRCS Deep Survey IV: Evolution of Galaxy Stellar Mass Function Back to z ~ 3

We use very deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging data obtained in MOIRCS Deep Survey (MODS) to investigate the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function back to z~3. The MODS data reach J=24.2, H=23.1, K=23.1 (5sigma, Vega magnitude) over 103 arcmin^2 (wide) and J=25.1, H=23.7, K=24.1 over 28 arcmin^2 (deep) in the GOODS-North region. The wide and very deep NIR data allow us to measure the number density of galaxies down to low stellar mass (10^9-10^10 Msun) even at high redshift with high statistical accuracy. The normalization of the mass function decreases with redshift and the integrated stellar mass density becomes ~ 8-18% of the local value at z~2 and ~ 4-9% at z~3, which are consistent with results of previous studies in general fields. Furthermore, we found that the low-mass slope becomes steeper with redshift from alpha ~- 1.3 at z~1 to alpha ~- 1.6 at z~3, and that the evolution of the number density of low-mass (10^9-10^10 Msun) galaxies is weaker than that of M* (~10^11 Msun) galaxies. This indicates that the contribution of low-mass galaxies to the total stellar mass density has been significant at high redshift. The steepening of the low-mass slope with redshift is opposite trend expected from the stellar mass dependence of the specific star formation rate reported in previous studies. The present result suggests that the hierarchical merging process overwhelmed the effect of the stellar mass growth by star formation and was very important for the stellar mass assembly of these galaxies at 1<~z<~3.

MOIRCS Deep Survey III: Active Galactic Nuclei in Massive Galaxies at z=2-4

We investigate the X-ray properties of the K-band-selected galaxies at redshift 2 < z < 4 by using our deep near-infrared images obtained in the MOIRCS Deep Survey project and the published Chandra X-ray source catalog. 61 X-ray sources with the 2-10 keV luminosity L_X = 10^{42}-10^{44} erg/s are identified with the K-selected galaxies and we found that they are exclusively (90%) associated with the massive objects with stellar mass larger than 10^{10.5} Msun. Our results are consistent with the idea that the M_BH/M_str ratio of the galaxies at z=2-4 is similar to the present-day value. On the other hand, the AGN detection rate among the very massive galaxies with the stellar mass larger than 10^{11} Msun is high, 33% (26/78). They are active objects in the sense that the black-hole mass accretion rate is ~ 1-50% of the Eddington limit if they indeed have similar M_BH/M_str ratio with those observed in the local universe. The active duration in the AGN duty cycle of the high-redshift massive galaxies seems large.

CP asymmetries of B to phi K_S and B to eta' K_S in SUSY GUT Model with Non-universal Sfermion Masses

We analyze CP asymmetries of B \to ϕK_S and B \to η' K_S in a supersymmetric grand unified theory in which only the third generation sfermions contained in 10(Q, U^c, E^c) of SU(5) can have a different mass from the others. One of the advantages of this nonuniversal mass model is that the first two generation sfermion masses can be large whereas both (left and right handed) stops are light so as to stabilize the weak scale. Therefore, we studied a minimal supersymmetric standard model parameter region in which a fine tuning in Higgs sector is relaxed owing to light masses of stops, gluino and higgsinos. In such a parameter region, the chargino contribution is as important as the gluino one. We show that the CP asymmetries of B \to ϕK_S and B \to η' K_S can deviate from their standard model predicted values by O(0.1) because of constructive interference between gluino and chargino contributions.

Neutralino Dark Matter in minimal supersymmetric standard model with natural light Higgs sector

We study the neutralino relic density in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with natural light Higgs sector in which all Higgs masses, the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking parameters, and the higgsino mass parameter mu are of order the weak scale. To realize this situation we adopt nonuniversal Higgs masses at the grand unified scale. We show that in some parameter space in which the SUSY breaking parameters are comparatively small, not only the constraint from the observed relic density of dark matter but also the LEP Higgs bound and the constraint from the b ->s gamma process are satisfied. In most of the parameter space, the neutralino relic density becomes smaller than the observed relic density in contrast with the results in the constrained minimal SUSY standard model (CMSSM). The reason is that the neutralino coannihilation processes to Higgs bosons open even if the gaugino mass is small and the cross sections become large due to the small dimensionful parameters. Especially small mu parameter and the light CP-odd Higgs, which are difficult to be realized in the CMSSM, are essential for the result.

A Solution for Little Hierarchy Problem and b --> s gamma

We show that all the parameters which destabilize the weak scale can be taken around the weak scale in the MSSM without conflicting with the SM Higgs mass bound set by LEP experiment. The essential point is that if the lightest CP-even Higgs h in the MSSM has only a small coupling to Z boson, g_{ZZh}, LEP cannot generate the Higgs sufficiently. In the scenario, the SM Higgs mass bound constrains the mass of the heaviest CP-even Higgs H which has the SM like g_{ZZH} coupling. However, it is easier to make the heaviest Higgs heavy by the effect of off-diagonal elements of the mass matrix of the CP-even Higgs because the larger eigenvalue of 2 times 2 matrix becomes larger by introducing off-diagonal elements. Thus, the smaller stop masses can be consistent with the LEP constraints. Moreover, the two excesses observed at LEP Higgs search can naturally be explained as the signals of the MSSM Higgs h and H in this scenario. One of the most interesting results in the scenario is that all the Higgs in the MSSM have the weak scale masses. For example, the charged Higgs mass should be around 130 GeV. This looks inconsistent with the lower bound obtained by the b --> s gamma process as m_{H^\pm}>350GeV. However, we show that the amplitude induced by the charged Higgs can naturally be compensated by that of the chargino if we take the mass parameters by which the little hierarchy problem can be solved. The point is that the both amplitudes have the same order of magnitudes when all the fields in the both loops have the same order of masses.

New Measurements Using External Photon Conversion at a High Luminosity B Factory

We propose two novel methods for testing the standard model using external photon conversion at a high-luminosity e^+e^- B factory proposed recently. The first method is to measure the mixing-induced CP-violation parameter S_{pi^0pi^0} in B^0 --> pi^0 pi^0 decays. The precision of S_{pi^0pi^0} is estimated to be 0.23 from a Monte Carlo study for a data sample containing 50 x 10^9 BBbar pairs. We demonstrate that this measurement is crucial for reducing the discrete ambiguity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle phi_2 determined from the isospin analysis with B --> pi pi decays. The second method is to measure photon polarization in B^0 --> K^{*0}(--> K^+ pi^-) gamma decays using the external photon conversion, and combine it with S_{K^{*}gamma} from B^0 --> K^{*0}(--> K^0_S pi^0) gamma decays. This offers a promising way of determining the hypothetical right-handed current amplitude and phase beyond the standard model.

Lepton Flavor Violation in SUSY GUT Model with Non-universal Sfermion Masses

We analyze lepton flavor violating $τ\to μγ$ and $μ\to e γ$ processes in SUSY GUT model in which sfermions have special mass spectrum. It is assumed that only third generation sfermions which are contained in ${\bf 10}(Q, U^c, E^c)$ of SU(5) can have a different mass from the others. This mass spectrum is led from $E_6$ GUT model with horizontal symmetries. It is shown that branching ratios of $τ\to μγ$ and $μ\to e γ$ depend strongly on a right-handed stau mass. The weak scale stability requires the light stau, so large decay rates can be expected in this scenario. When stau is around 150 GeV and $\tan β\sim 10$, the branching ratios can be larger than $Br(τ\to μγ) \simeq 10^{-8}$ and $Br(μ\to e γ) \simeq 5\times 10^{-12}$, which are within reach of future experiments. In addition, this model has an interesting feature that the final state charged lepton tends to have the right-handed chirality.
