Critical threshold for weakly interacting log-correlated focusing Gibbs measures

We study log-correlated Gibbs measures on the $d$-dimensional torus with weakly interacting focusing quartic potentials whose coupling constants tend to $0$ as we remove regularization. In particular, we exhibit a phase transition for this model by identifying a critical threshold, separating the weakly and strongly coupling regimes; in the weakly coupling regime, we show that the frequency-truncated measures converge to the base Gaussian measure (possibly with a renormalized $L^2$-cutoff), whereas, in the strongly coupling regime, we prove non-convergence of the frequency-truncated measures, even up to a subsequence. Our result answers an open question posed by Brydges and Slade (1996).

Revisiting Bourgain's probabilistic construction of solutions to the 2-$d$ cubic NLS

In a seminal paper (1996), Bourgain proved invariance of the Gibbs measure for the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the two-dimensional torus by constructing local-in-time solutions in a probabilistic manner. In this note, we revisit and streamline his argument, using the random tensor estimate developed by Deng, Nahmod, and Yue (2022).

On the deep-water and shallow-water limits of the intermediate long wave equation from a statistical viewpoint

(Due to the limit on the number of characters for an abstract set by arXiv, the full abstract can not be displayed here. See the abstract in the paper.) We study convergence problems for the intermediate long wave equation (ILW), with the depth parameter $δ> 0$, in the deep-water limit ($δ\to \infty$) and the shallow-water limit ($δ\to 0$) from a statistical point of view. In particular, we establish convergence of invariant Gibbs dynamics for ILW in both the deep-water and shallow-water limits. For this purpose, we first construct the Gibbs measures for ILW, $0 < δ< \infty$. As they are supported on distributions, a renormalization is required. With the Wick renormalization, we carry out the construction of the Gibbs measures for ILW. We then prove that the Gibbs measures for ILW converge in total variation to that for the Benjamin-Ono equation (BO) in the deep-water limit. In the shallow-water regime, after applying a scaling transformation, we prove that, as $δ\to 0$, the Gibbs measures for the scaled ILW converge weakly to that for the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV). We point out that this second result is of particular interest since the Gibbs measures for the scaled ILW and KdV are mutually singular (whereas the Gibbs measures for ILW and BO are equivalent). We also discuss convergence of the associated dynamical problem. Lastly, we point out that our results also apply to the generalized ILW equation in the defocusing case, converging to the generalized BO in the deep-water limit and to the generalized KdV in the shallow-water limit. In the non-defocusing case, however, our results can not be extended to a nonlinearity with a higher power due to the non-normalizability of the corresponding Gibbs measures.

Compact $T(1)$ theorem à la Stein

We prove a compact $T(1)$ theorem, involving quantitative estimates, analogous to the quantitative classical $T(1)$ theorem due to Stein. We also discuss the $C_c^\infty$-to-$CMO$ mapping properties of non-compact Calderón-Zygmund operators.

A simple construction of the sine-Gordon model via stochastic quantization

We present a simple PDE construction of the sine-Gordon measure below the first threshold ($\be^2 < 4π$), in both the finite and infinite volume settings, by studying the corresponding parabolic sine-Gordon model. We also establish pathwise global well-posedness of the hyperbolic sine-Gordon model in finite volume for $\be^2 < 2π$.

Stochastic quantization of the $Φ^3_3$-model

(Due to the limit on the number of characters for an abstract set by arXiv, the full abstract can not be displayed here. See the abstract in the paper.) We study the construction of the $Φ^3_3$-measure and complete the program on the (non-)construction of the focusing Gibbs measures, initiated by Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988). This problem turns out to be critical, exhibiting the following phase transition. In the weakly nonlinear regime, we prove normalizability of the $Φ^3_3$-measure and show that it is singular with respect to the massive Gaussian free field. Moreover, we show that there exists a shifted measure with respect to which the $Φ^3_3$-measure is absolutely continuous. In the strongly nonlinear regime, by further developing the machinery introduced by the authors (2020), we establish non-normalizability of the $Φ^3_3$-measure. Due to the singularity of the $Φ^3_3$-measure with respect to the massive Gaussian free field, this non-normalizability part poses a particular challenge as compared to our previous works. In order to overcome this issue, we first construct a $σ$-finite version of the $Φ^3_3$-measure and show that this measure is not normalizable. Furthermore, we prove that the truncated $Φ^3_3$-measures have no weak limit in a natural space, even up to a subsequence. We also study the dynamical problem. By adapting the paracontrolled approach, in particular from the works by Gubinelli, Koch, and the first author (2018) and by the authors (2020), we prove almost sure global well-posedness of the hyperbolic $Φ^3_3$-model and invariance of the Gibbs measure in the weakly nonlinear regime. In the globalization part, we introduce a new, conceptually simple and straightforward approach, where we directly work with the (truncated) Gibbs measure, using the variational formula and ideas from theory of optimal transport.

Norm inflation for the cubic nonlinear heat equation above the scaling critical regularity

We consider the ill-posedness issue for the cubic nonlinear heat equation and prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity in the Hölder-Besov space $\mathcal C^s = B^{s}_{\infty, \infty}$ for $ s \le -\frac 23$. In particular, our result includes the subcritical range $-1< s \le -\frac 23$, which is above the scaling critical regularity $s = -1$ with respect to the Hölder-Besov scale. In view of the well-posedness result in $\mathcal C^s$, $s > -\frac 23$, our ill-posedness result is sharp.

Focusing $Φ^4_3$-model with a Hartree-type nonlinearity

(Due to the limit on the number of characters for an abstract set by arXiv, the full abstract can not be displayed here. See the abstract in the paper.) Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) initiated the study of focusing Gibbs measures, which was continued by Brydges and Slade (1996), Bourgain (1997, 1999), and Carlen, Fröhlich, and Lebowitz (2016) among others. In this paper, we complete the program on the (non-)construction of the focusing Hartree Gibbs measures in the three-dimensional setting. More precisely, we study a focusing $Φ^4_3$-model with a Hartree-type nonlinearity, where the potential for the Hartree nonlinearity is given by the Bessel potential of order $β$. We first construct the focusing Hartree $Φ^4_3$-measure for $β> 2$, while we prove its non-normalizability for $β< 2$. Furthermore, we establish the following phase transition at the critical value $β= 2$: normalizability in the weakly nonlinear regime and non-normalizability in the strongly nonlinear regime. We then study the canonical stochastic quantization of the focusing Hartree $Φ^4_3$-measure, namely, the three-dimensional stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation (SdNLW) with a cubic nonlinearity of Hartree-type, forced by an additive space-time white noise, and prove almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the focusing Hartree $Φ^4_3$-measure for $β> 2$ (and $β= 2$ in the weakly nonlinear regime). In view of the non-normalizability result, our almost sure global well-posedness result is sharp. In Appendix, we also discuss the (parabolic) stochastic quantization for the focusing Hartree $Φ^4_3$-measure. We also construct the defocusing Hartree $Φ^4_3$-measure for $β> 0$.

A remark on randomization of a general function of negative regularity

In the study of partial differential equations (PDEs) with random initial data and singular stochastic PDEs with random forcing, we typically decompose a classically ill-defined solution map into two steps, where, in the first step, we use stochastic analysis to construct various stochastic objects. The simplest kind of such stochastic objects is the Wick powers of a basic stochastic term (namely a random linear solution, a stochastic convolution, or their sum). In the case of randomized initial data of a general function of negative regularity for studying nonlinear wave equations (NLW), we show necessity of imposing additional Fourier-Lebesgue regularity for constructing Wick powers by exhibiting examples of functions slightly outside $L^2(\mathbb T^d)$ such that the associated Wick powers do not exist. This shows that probabilistic well-posedness theory for NLW with general randomized initial data fails in negative Sobolev spaces (even with renormalization). Similar examples also apply to stochastic NLW and stochastic nonlinear heat equations with general white-in-time stochastic forcing, showing necessity of appropriate Fourier-Lebesgue $γ$-radonifying regularity in the construction of the Wick powers of the associated stochastic convolution.

Deep-water limit of the intermediate long wave equation in $L^2$

We study the well-posedness issue of the intermediate long wave equation (ILW) on both the real line and the circle. By applying the gauge transform for the Benjamin-Ono equation (BO) and adapting the $L^2$ well-posedness argument for BO by Molinet and the fourth author (2012), we prove global well-posedness of ILW in $L^2$ on both the real line and the circle. In the periodic setting, this provides the first low regularity well-posedness of ILW. We then establish convergence of the ILW dynamics to the BO dynamics in the deep-water limit at the $L^2$-level.

Compact bilinear operators and paraproducts revisited

We present a new proof of the compactness of bilinear paraproducts with CMO symbols. By drawing an analogy to compact linear operators, we first explore further properties of compact bilinear operators on Banach spaces and present examples. We then prove compactness of bilinear paraproducts with CMO symbols by combining one of the properties of compact bilinear operators thus obtained with vanishing Carleson measure estimates and interpolation of bilinear compactness.

A remark on Gibbs measures with log-correlated Gaussian fields

We study Gibbs measures with log-correlated base Gaussian fields on the $d$-dimensional torus. In the defocusing case, the construction of such Gibbs measures follows from Nelson's argument. In this paper, we consider the focusing case with a quartic interaction. Using the variational formulation, we prove non-normalizability of the Gibbs measure. When $d = 2$, our argument provides an alternative proof of the non-normalizability result for the focusing $Φ^4_2$-measure by Brydges and Slade (1996). Furthermore, we provide a precise rate of divergence, where the constant is characterized by the optimal constant for a certain Bernstein's inequality on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also go over the construction of the focusing Gibbs measure with a cubic interaction. In the appendices, we present (a) non-normalizability of the Gibbs measure for the two-dimensional Zakharov system and (b) the construction of focusing quartic Gibbs measures with smoother base Gaussian measures, showing a critical nature of the log-correlated Gibbs measure with a focusing quartic interaction.

Intermediate long wave equation in negative Sobolev spaces

We study the intermediate long wave equation (ILW) in negative Sobolev spaces. In particular, despite the lack of scaling invariance, we identify the regularity $s = -\frac 12$ as the critical regularity for ILW with any depth parameter, by establishing the following two results. (i) By viewing ILW as a perturbation of the Benjamin-Ono equation (BO) and exploiting the complete integrability of BO, we establish a global-in-time a priori bound on the $H^s$-norm of a solution to ILW for $ - \frac 12 < s < 0$. (ii) By making use of explicit solutions, we prove that ILW is ill-posed in $H^s$ for $s < - \frac 12$. Our results apply to both the real line case and the periodic case.

Global dynamics for the stochastic KdV equation with white noise as initial data

We study the stochastic Korteweg-de Vries equation (SKdV) with an additive space-time white noise forcing, posed on the one-dimensional torus. In particular, we construct global-in-time solutions to SKdV with spatial white noise initial data. Due to the lack of an invariant measure, Bourgain's invariant measure argument is not applicable to this problem. In order to overcome this difficulty, we implement a variant of Bourgain's argument in the context of an evolution system of measures and construct global-in-time dynamics. Moreover, we show that the white noise measure with variance $1+t$ is an evolution system of measures for SKdV with the white noise initial data.

A note on products of stochastic objects

In recent study of partial differential equations (PDEs) with random initial data and singular stochastic PDEs with random forcing, it is essential to study the regularity property of various stochastic objects. These stochastic objects are often given as products of simpler stochastic objects. As pointed out in Hairer(2014), by using a multiple stochastic integral representation, one may use Jensen's inequality to reduce an estimate on the product to those on simpler stochastic objects. In this note, we present a simple argument of the same estimate, based on Cauchy-Schwarz' inequality (without any reference to multiple stochastic integrals). We present an example on computing the regularity property of stochastic objects in the study of the dispersion-generalized nonlinear wave equations, and prove their local well-posedness with rough random initial data.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness of the Gaussian free field evolution under the two-dimensional Wick ordered cubic wave equation

We study the nonlinear wave equation (NLW) on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^2$ with Gaussian random initial data on $H^s(\mathbb T^2) \times H^{s-1}(\mathbb T^2)$, $s < 0$, distributed according to the base Gaussian free field $μ$ associated with the invariant Gibbs measure studied by Thomann and the first author (2020). In particular, we investigate the approximation property of the corresponding solution by smooth (random) solutions. Our main results in this paper are two-fold. (i) We show that the solution map for the renormalized cubic NLW defined on the Gaussian free field $μ$ is the unique extension of the solution map defined for smoothed Gaussian initial data obtained by mollification, independent of mollification kernels. (ii) We also show that there is a regularization of the Gaussian initial data so that the corresponding smooth solutions almost surely have no limit in the natural topology. This second result in particular states that one can not use arbitrary smooth approximation for the renormalized cubic NLW dynamics. As a preliminary step for proving (ii), we establish a (deterministic) norm inflation result at general initial data for the (unrenormalized) cubic NLW on $\mathbb T^d$ and $\mathbb R^d$ in negative Sobolev spaces, extending the norm inflation result by Christ, Colliander, and Tao (2003).
