A remark on triviality for the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equation

We consider the two-dimensional stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation (SdNLW) with the cubic nonlinearity, forced by a space-time white noise. In particular, we investigate the limiting behavior of solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises and establish triviality results in the spirit of the work by Hairer, Ryser, and Weber (2012). More precisely, without renormalization of the nonlinearity, we establish the following two limiting behaviors; (i) in the strong noise regime, we show that solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises tend to 0 as the regularization is removed and (ii) in the weak noise regime, we show that solutions to SdNLW with regularized noises converge to a solution to a deterministic damped nonlinear wave equation with an additional mass term.

Global well-posedness of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in almost critical spaces

In this paper, we first introduce a new function space $MH^{θ, p}$ whose norm is given by the $\ell^p$-sum of modulated $H^θ$-norms of a given function. In particular, when $θ< -\frac 12$, we show that the space $MH^{θ, p}$ agrees with the modulation space $M^{2, p}(\mathbb R)$ on the real line and the Fourier-Lebesgue space $\mathcal F L^{p}(\mathbb T)$ on the circle. We use this equivalence of the norms and the Galilean symmetry to adapt the conserved quantities constructed by Killip-Vişan-Zhang to the modulation space setting. By applying the scaling symmetry, we then prove global well-posedness of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in almost critical spaces. More precisely, we show that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb R$ is globally well-posed in $M^{2, p}(\mathbb R)$ for any $p < \infty$, while the renormalized cubic NLS on $\mathbb T$ is globally well-posed in $\mathcal FL^p(\mathbb T)$ for any $p < \infty$. In Appendix, we also establish analogous global-in-time bounds for the modified KdV equation (mKdV) in the modulation spaces on the real line and in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces on the circle. An additional key ingredient of the proof in this case is a Galilean transform which converts the mKdV to the mKdV-NLS equation.

On the two-dimensional hyperbolic stochastic sine-Gordon equation

We study the two-dimensional stochastic sine-Gordon equation (SSG) in the hyperbolic setting. In particular, by introducing a suitable time-dependent renormalization for the relevant imaginary multiplicative Gaussian chaos, we prove local well-posedness of SSG for any value of a parameter $β^2 > 0$ in the nonlinearity. This exhibits sharp contrast with the parabolic case studied by Hairer and Shen (2016) and Chandra, Hairer, and Shen (2018), where the parameter is restricted to the subcritical range: $0 < β^2 < 8 π$. We also present a triviality result for the unrenormalized SSG.

On the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations at critical regularities

We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations (SNLS) with an additive noise in the mass-critical and energy-critical settings. By adapting the probabilistic perturbation argument employed in the context of the random data Cauchy theory by the first author with Bényi and Pocovnicu (2015) to the current stochastic PDE setting, we present a concise argument to establish global well-posedness of the mass-critical and energy-critical SNLS.

Invariant Gibbs dynamics for the dynamical sine-Gordon model

In this note, we study the hyperbolic stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation (SdSG), with a parameter $β^2 > 0$, and its associated Gibbs dynamics on the two-dimensional torus. After introducing a suitable renormalization, we first construct the Gibbs measure in the range $0<β^2<4π$ via the variational approach due to Barashkov-Gubinelli (2018). We then prove almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the Gibbs measure under the hyperbolic SdSG dynamics in the range $0<β^2<2π$. Our construction of the Gibbs measure also yields almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the Gibbs measure for the parabolic sine-Gordon model in the range $0<β^2<4π$.

Normal form approach to unconditional well-posedness of nonlinear dispersive PDEs on the real line

In this paper, we revisit the infinite iteration scheme of normal form reductions, introduced by the first and second authors (with Z. Guo), in constructing solutions to nonlinear dispersive PDEs. Our main goal is to present a simplified approach to this method. More precisely, we study normal form reductions in an abstract form and reduce multilinear estimates of arbitrarily high degrees to successive applications of basic trilinear estimates. As an application, we prove unconditional well-posedness of canonical nonlinear dispersive equations on the real line. In particular, we implement this simplified approach to an infinite iteration of normal form reductions in the context of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) and the modified KdV equation (mKdV) on the real line and prove unconditional well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb R)$ with (i) $s\geq \frac 16$ for the cubic NLS and (ii) $s > \frac 14$ for the mKdV. Our normal form approach also allows us to construct weak solutions to the cubic NLS in $H^s(\mathbb R)$, $0 \leq s < \frac 16$, and distributional solutions to the mKdV in $H^\frac{1}{4}(\mathbb R)$ (with some uniqueness statements).

Modulation spaces with scaling symmetry

We indicate how to construct a family of modulation function spaces that have a scaling symmetry. We also illustrate the behavior of the Schrödinger multiplier on such function spaces.

Quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with third order dispersion

In this paper, we consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with third order dispersion on the circle. In the non-resonant case, we prove that the mean-zero Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > \frac 34$, are quasi-invariant under the flow. In establishing the result, we apply gauge transformations to remove the resonant part of the dynamics and use invariance of the Gaussian measures under these gauge transformations.

Stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with almost space-time white noise

We study the stochastic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (SNLS) with an additive noise on the one-dimensional torus. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of the (renormalized) SNLS when the noise is almost space-time white noise. We also discuss a notion of criticality in this stochastic context, comparing the situation with the stochastic cubic heat equation (also known as the stochastic quantization equation).

Solving the 4NLS with white noise initial data

We construct global-in-time singular dynamics for the (renormalized) cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle, having the white noise measure as an invariant measure. For this purpose, we introduce the "random-resonant / nonlinear decomposition", which allows us to single out the singular component of the solution. Unlike the classical McKean, Bourgain, Da Prato-Debussche type argument, this singular component is nonlinear, consisting of arbitrarily high powers of the random initial data. We also employ a random gauge transform, leading to random Fourier restriction norm spaces. For this problem, a contraction argument does not work and we instead establish convergence of smooth approximating solutions by studying the partially iterated Duhamel formulation under the random gauge transform. We reduce the crucial nonlinear estimates to boundedness properties of certain random multilinear functionals of the white noise.

Quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the two-dimensional defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation

We study the transport properties of the Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the two-dimensional defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation (NLW). Under some regularity condition, we prove quasi-invariance of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces for the NLW dynamics. We achieve this goal by introducing a simultaneous renormalization on the energy functional and its time derivative and establishing a renormalized energy estimate in the probabilistic setting.

On global well-posedness of the modified KdV equation in modulation spaces

We study well-posedness of the complex-valued modified KdV equation (mKdV) on the real line. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of mKdV in modulation spaces $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$ for $s \ge \frac14$ and $2\leq p < \infty$. For $s < \frac 14$, we show that the solution map for mKdV is not locally uniformly continuous in $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$. By combining this local well-posedness with our previous work (2018) on an a priori global-in-time bound for mKdV in modulation spaces, we also establish global well-posedness of mKdV in $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$ for $s \ge \frac14$ and $2\leq p < \infty$.

An optimal regularity result on the quasi-invariant Gaussian measures for the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We study the transport properties of the Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces under the dynamics of the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle. In particular, we establish an optimal regularity result for quasi-invariance of the mean-zero Gaussian measures on Sobolev spaces. The main new ingredient is an improved energy estimate established by performing an infinite iteration of normal form reductions on the energy functional. Furthermore, we show that the dispersion is essential for such a quasi-invariance result by proving non quasi-invariance of the Gaussian measures under the dynamics of the dispersionless model.

Higher order expansions for the probabilistic local Cauchy theory of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with randomized initial data. In particular, we study an iterative approach based on a partial power series expansion in terms of the random initial data. By performing a fixed point argument around the second order expansion, we improve the regularity threshold for almost sure local well-posedness from our previous work [2]. We further investigate a limitation of this iterative procedure. Finally, we introduce an alternative iterative approach, based on a modified expansion of arbitrary length, and prove almost sure local well-posedness of the cubic NLS in an almost optimal regularity range with respect to the original iterative approach based on a power series expansion.

Renormalization of the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equations

We study the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equations (SNLW) with an additive space-time white noise forcing. In particular, we introduce a time-dependent renor- malization and prove that SNLW is pathwise locally well-posed. As an application of the local well-posedness argument, we also establish a weak universality result for the renormalized SNLW.

Global well-posedness of the periodic cubic fourth order NLS in negative Sobolev spaces

We consider the Cauchy problem for the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) on the circle. In particular, we prove global well-posedness of the renormalized 4NLS in negative Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{1}{3}$, with enhanced uniqueness. The proof consists of two separate arguments. (i) We first prove global existence in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{9}{20}$, via the short-time Fourier restriction norm method. By following the argument in Guo-Oh for the cubic NLS, this also leads to non-existence of solutions for the (non-renormalized) 4NLS in negative Sobolev spaces. (ii) We then prove enhanced uniqueness in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{1}{3}$, by establishing an energy estimate for the difference of two solutions with the same initial condition. For this purpose, we perform an infinite iteration of normal form reductions on the $H^s$-energy functional, allowing us to introduce an infinite sequence of correction terms to the $H^s$-energy functional in the spirit of the $I$-method. In fact, the main novelty of this paper is this reduction of the $H^s$-energy functionals (for a single solution and for the difference of two solutions with the same initial condition) to sums of infinite series of multilinear terms of increasing degrees.
