Black Hole Entropy from String Entanglement

We discuss the notion of string entanglement in string theory, which aims to study entanglement between worldsheet Hilbert spaces rather than entanglement between spacetime Hilbert spaces defined on a time slice in spacetime. Applying this framework to the FZZ duality and its extension to a three-dimensional black hole, we argue that the thermal entropy of 2d and 3d black holes is accounted for by the string entanglement entropy between folded strings arising in the dual sine-Liouville CFT. We compute this via a worldsheet replica method and show that it decomposes into two parts, which we call the vertex operator contribution and the replica contribution. The former can be evaluated analytically and is shown to coincide with the black hole thermal entropies in the low temperature limit in large D dimensions. Although a computation of the latter is left as an open problem, we present evidence that it captures the remaining portion of the black hole entropy.

Dense matter in a holographic hard-wall model of QCD

A deeper understanding of QCD matter at strong coupling remains challenging due to its non-perturbative nature. To this end, we study a two-flavor holographic hard-wall model to investigate the properties of QCD at finite-density and zero temperature with a nonvanishing quark mass. A dense matter phase is described by a classical solution of the equations of motion in a homogeneous Ansatz. We apply holographic renormalization to formulate the holographic dictionary that relates UV boundary data in the bulk with the physical quantities in QCD. We emphasize a role played by an IR boundary action on the hard-wall when analyzing the QCD phase structures in this holographic setup. It is found that a baryonic matter phase is manifested in this model with a high baryon number density and a nearly vanishing chiral condensate. We derive the equation of state for the resulting phase and use it to work out the mass-radius relation for neutron stars. We find that the maximum mass of neutron stars can exceed two solar masses for a wide range of free parameters in this model. We also comment on an alternative scenario about the phase structure such that the baryonic matter phase arises at a baryon number chemical potential greater than a critical value.

Note on higher-group structure in 6d self-dual gauge theory

We analyze higher-group structure of a 6d model coupled with a self-dual 2-form gauge field. This model is defined from 6d axion-electrodynamics with a 1-form Chern-Weil(CW) symmetry gauged dynamically. The gauging leads to a Green-Schwarz-West-Sagnotti(GSWS) term, which gives rise to an anomaly through a GSWS transformation acting on the 2-form gauge field. We cancel this anomaly by gauging a 3-form CW symmetry in 6d axion-electrodynamics. We find out the global symmetries in the resultant model and derive the gauge invariant action in the presence of the background gauge fields. It is argued that a discrete 1-form symmetry is anomalous because turning on the associated background gauge field causes quantum inconsistency due to an operator-valued ambiguity. Higher-group structure in this model that is manifested as a Green-Schwarz-like transformation for CW background gauge fields is discussed.

BCF anomaly and higher-group structure in the low energy effective theories of mesons

We discuss the BCF anomaly of massless QCD-like theories, first obtained by Anber and Poppitz, from the viewpoint of the low energy effective theories. We assume that the QCD-like theories exhibit spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking due to a quark bilinear condensate. Using the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition for the BCF anomaly, we find that the low energy effective action is composed of a chiral Lagrangian and a Wess-Zumino-Witten term together with an interaction term of the $η^\prime$ meson with the background gauge field for a discrete one-form symmetry. It is shown that the low energy effective action cancels the quantum inconsistencies associated with $η^\prime$ due to an ambiguity of how to uplift the action to a five-dimensional spacetime with a boundary. The $η^\prime$ term plays a substantial role in exploring the emergent higher-group structure at low energies.

Higher-group structure in $2n$-dimensional axion-electrodynamics

We investigate $2n$-dimensional axion electrodynamics for the purpose of exploring a higher-group structure underlying it. This is manifested as a Green-Schwarz transformation of the background gauge fields that couple minimally to the conserved currents. The $n=3$ case is studied most intensively. We derive the identities of correlation functions among the global symmetry generators by using a gauge transformation that maps two correlation functions with each other. A key ingredient in this computation is given by the Green-Schwarz transformation and the 't Hooft anomalies associated with the gauge transformation. The algebraic structure of these results and its physical interpretations are discussed in detail. In particular, we find that the higher-group structure for $n=3$ is endowed with a multi-ary operation among the symmetry generators.

Comments on contact terms and conformal manifolds in the AdS/CFT correspondence

We study the contact terms that appear in the correlation functions of exactly marginal operators using the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is known that CFT with an exactly marginal deformation requires the existence of the contact terms with their coefficients having a geometrical interpretation in the context of conformal manifolds. We show that the AdS/CFT correspondence captures properly the mathematical structure of the correlation functions that is expected from the CFT analysis. For this purpose, we employ holographic RG to formulate a most general setup in the bulk for describing an exactly marginal deformation. The resultant bulk equations of motion are nonlinear and solved perturbatively to obtain the on-shell action. We compute three- and four-point functions of the exactly marginal operators using the GKP-Witten prescription, and show that they match with the expected results precisely. The cut-off surface prescription in the bulk serves as a regularization scheme for conformal perturbation theory in the boundary CFT. As an application, we examine a double OPE limit of the four-point functions. The anomalous dimensions of double trace operators are written in terms of the geometrical data of a conformal manifold.

Stringy excited baryons in holographic QCD

We analyze excited baryon states using a holographic dual of QCD that is defined on the basis of an intersecting D4/D8-brane system. Studies of baryons in this model have been made by regarding them as a topological soliton of a gauge theory on a five-dimensional curved spacetime. However, this allows one to obtain only a certain class of baryons. We attempt to present a framework such that a whole set of excited baryons can be treated in a systematic way. This is achieved by employing the original idea of Witten, which states that a baryon is described by a system composed of $N_c$ open strings emanating from a baryon vertex. We argue that this system can be formulated by an ADHM-type matrix model of Hashimoto-Iizuka-Yi together with an infinite tower of the open string massive modes. Using this setup, we work out the spectra of excited baryons and compare them with the experimental data. In particular, we derive a formula of the nucleon Regge trajectory assuming that the excited nucleons lying the trajectory are characterized by the excitation of a single open string attached on the baryon vertex.

Supersymmetric Adler Functions and Holography

We perform several tests on a recent proposal by Shifman and Stepanyantz for an exact expression for the current correlation functions in supersymmetric gauge theories. We clarify the meaning of the relation in superconformal theories. In particular we show that it automatically follows from known relations between the current correlation functions and anomalies. It therefore also automatically matches between different dual realizations of the same superconformal theory. We use holographic examples as well as calculations in free theories to show that the proposed relation fails in theories with mass terms.

AdS/CFT and local renormalization group with gauge fields

We revisit a study of local renormalization group (RG) with background gauge fields incorporated using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Starting with a $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk gravity coupled to scalars and gauge fields, we derive a local RG equation from a flow equation by working in the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the bulk theory. The Gauss's law constraint associated with gauge symmetry plays an important role. RG flows of the background gauge fields are governed by vector $β$-functions, and some interesting properties of them are known to follow. We give a systematic rederivation of them on the basis of the flow equation. Fixing an ambiguity of local counterterms in such a manner that is natural from the viewpoint of the flow equation, we determine all the coefficients uniquely appearing in the trace of the stress tensor for $d=4$. A relation between a choice of schemes and a Virial current is discussed. As a consistency check, these are found to satisfy the integrability conditions of local RG transformations. From these results, we are led to a proof of a holographic $c$-theorem by finding out a full family of schemes where a trace anomaly coefficient is related with a holographic $c$-function.

Mesons as Open Strings in a Holographic Dual of QCD

We study meson spectrum obtained from massive open string modes in a holographic dual of QCD constructed on the basis of a D4/D8-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. The spectrum includes mesons with spin higher than one. Taking into account the effect of curved background perturbatively, we obtain a mass formula for these mesons, which exhibits the linear Regge behavior at the leading order with subleading non-linear corrections. We argue that the string spectrum captures some features of the observed meson spectrum. For example, a_2(1320), b_1(1235), π(1300), a_0(1450), etc., are identified as the first excited massive open string states and ρ_3(1690), π_2(1670), etc., are identified as the second excited states.

Nuclear Force from String Theory

We compute nuclear force in a holographic model of QCD on the basis of a D4-D8 brane configuration in type IIA string theory. Repulsive core of nucleons is quite important in nuclear physics, but its origin has not been well-understood in strongly-coupled QCD. We find that string theory via gauge/string duality deduces this repulsive core at short distance between nucleons. Since baryons in the model are realized as solitons given by Yang-Mills instanton configuration on flavor D8-branes, ADHM construction of two instantons probes well the nucleon interaction at short scale, which provides the nuclear force quantitatively. We obtain, as well as a tensor force, a central force which is strongly repulsive as suggested in experiments and lattice results. In particular, the nucleon-nucleon potential V(r) (as a function of the distance) scales as 1/r^2, which is peculiar to the holographic model. We compare our results with one-boson exchange model using the nucleon-nucleon-meson coupling obtained in our previous paper (arXiv:0806.3122).

Holographic Baryons : Static Properties and Form Factors from Gauge/String Duality

In this paper, we study properties of baryons by using a holographic dual of QCD on the basis of the D4/D8-brane configuration, where baryons are described by a soliton. We first determine the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solution, which allows us to evaluate well-defined currents associated with the U(N_f)_L \times U(N_f)_R chiral symmetry. Using the currents, we compute static quantities of baryons such as charge radii and magnetic moments, and make a quantitative test with experiments. It is emphasized that not only the nucleon but also excited baryons, such as Δ, N(1440), N(1535) etc., can be analyzed systematically in this model. We also investigate the form factors and find that our form factors agree well with the results that are well-established empirically. With the form factors, the effective baryon-baryon-meson cubic coupling constants among their infinite towers in the model can be determined. Some physical implications following from these results are discussed.

O(N) and USp(N) QCD from String Theory

We propose a holographic dual of large N_c QCD with the gauge group O(N_c) and USp(N_c) and N_f flavors of massless quarks. This is constructed by adding O6-planes to an intersecting D4-D8 system in type IIA superstring theory. The holographic dual description is formulated in the Witten's D4-brane background with D8-branes and O6-planes embedded in it as probes. The D4-brane background gives rise to a smooth interpolation of D8-anti-D8 pairs and an O6-anti-O6 pair. We show that the resultant brane configuration explains geometrically the flavor symmetry breaking patterns in O(N_c) and USp(N_c) QCD that are caused by quark bilinear condensates. We next discuss that baryons can be realized as D4-anti-D4 pairs wrapped on S^4 that intersect with the O6-plane. By analyzing the tachyons on it, we reproduce the stability conditions of the baryons that are expected from the gauge theory viewpoint. The stable baryon configurations are classified systematically by using K-theory. We also give a similar analysis for the flux tubes and again reproduce the results that are consistent with QCD.

Low energy hadron physics in holographic QCD

We present a holographic dual of four-dimensional, large N_c QCD with massless flavors. This model is constructed by placing N_f probe D8-branes into a D4 background, where supersymmetry is completely broken. The chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is manifested as a smooth interpolation of D8 - anti-D8 pairs in the supergravity background. The meson spectrum is examined by analyzing a five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that originates from the non-Abelian DBI action of the probe D8-brane. It is found that our model yields massless pions, which are identified with Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with the chiral symmetry breaking. We obtain the low-energy effective action of the pion field and show that it contains the usual kinetic term of the chiral Lagrangian and the Skyrme term. A brane configuration that defines a dynamical baryon is identified with the Skyrmion. We also derive the effective action including the lightest vector meson. Our model is closely related to that in the hidden local symmetry approach, and we obtain a Kawarabayashi-Suzuki-Riazuddin-Fayyazuddin-type relation among the couplings. Furthermore, we investigate the Chern-Simons term on the probe brane and show that it leads to the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. The mass of the η' meson is also considered, and we formulate a simple derivation of the η' mass term satisfying the Witten-Veneziano formula from supergravity.

More on a holographic dual of QCD

We investigate the interactions among the pion, vector mesons and external gauge fields in the holographic dual of massless QCD proposed in a previous paper, hep-th/0412141, on the basis of probe D8-branes embedded in a D4-brane background in type IIA string theory. We obtain the coupling constants by performing both analytic and numerical calculations, and compare them with experimental data. It is found that the vector meson dominance in the pion form factor as well as in the Wess-Zumino-Witten term holds in an intriguing manner. We also study the ωto πγand ωto 3πdecay amplitudes. It is shown that the interactions relevant to these decay amplitudes have the same structure as that proposed by Fujiwara et al. Various relations among the masses and the coupling constants of an infinite tower of mesons are derived. These relations play crucial roles in the analysis. We find that most of the results are consistent with experiments.

Baryons from instantons in holographic QCD

We consider aspects of dynamical baryons in a holographic dual of QCD that is proposed on the basis of a D4/D8-brane configuration. We construct a soliton solution carrying a unit baryon number and show that it is given by an instanton solution of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with fixed size. The Chern-Simons term on the flavor D8-branes plays a crucial role of protecting the instanton from collapsing to zero size. By quantizing the collective coordinates of the soliton, we work out the baryon spectra. Negative-parity baryons as well as baryons with higher spins and isospins can be obtained in a simple manner.

Topological B-Model, Matrix Models, $\hat{c}=1$ Strings and Quiver Gauge Theories

We study topological and integrable aspects of $\hat{c}=1$ strings. We consider the circle line theories 0A and 0B at particular radii, and the super affine theories at their self-dual radii. We construct their ground rings, identify them with certain quotients of the conifold, and suggest topological B-model descriptions. We consider the partition functions, correlators and Ward identities, and construct a Kontsevich-like matrix model. We then study all these aspects via the topological B-model description. Finally, we analyse the corresponding Dijkgraaf-Vafa type matrix models and quiver gauge theories.
