Symplectic Chern-Simons theories dual to Abelian rank-$0$ theories

We propose that the 3d symplectic Chern-Simons theory $USp(2n)$ at level $k=n+\frac12+\ell$ with a single chiral multiplet in the fundamental representation is dual, for every pair of positive integers $(n,\ell)$, to the Abelian rank-$0$ theory $\mathcal{T}_{\ell,n}$ of Creutzig, Garner and Kim. The fundamental is pseudo-real, so the level is half-integral, there is no non-Abelian flavor symmetry, and the supersymmetry is enhanced to $\mathcal{N}=4$. Both sides have vanishing Higgs and Coulomb branches. We match the counting of supersymmetric vacua under real mass deformations for all $(n,\ell)$, and the supersymmetric indices in a number of cases. We then study in detail the case $\ell=1$, the minimal $USp(2n)$ Chern-Simons theory at level $n+\frac32$, whose dual is a $U(1)^{n}$ theory with a tadpole level matrix and a bare monopole superpotential.

Quarter-indices for basic ortho-symplectic corners

We study supersymmetric quarter-indices for corner configurations in 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. For the basic Y-junctions, we obtain exact closed-form expressions for the indices by making use of the Gustafson type integral formula and the Higgsing method. We demonstrate the equality of the quarter-indices between dual configurations, providing evidence for S-duality of the corner configurations. In the special fugacity limit, the indices admit an interpretation in terms of the vacuum characters of the W-algebras of type BCD, and the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2N)$ as the corner vertex operator algebras.

Holographic spectral functions for Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds

We investigate holographic spectral functions for general Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds dual to four-dimensional superconformal field theories, including supersymmetric indices, supersymmetric zeta functions, and supersymmetric determinants. The analytic structure of the supersymmetric zeta function, particularly its residue and special value, allows for the computation of the curvature-squared integral of the Sasaki-Einstein manifold and the subleading holographic anomaly. The reach of this spectral framework is not restricted to toric geometries and accommodates non-toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. For toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, we develop a combinatorial method to compute the holographic spectral functions and the holographic geometric invariants directly from the toric data.

Interior zeros of supersymmetric indices

A supersymmetric index has interior zeros ($|q|<1$) if and only if the arithmetic coefficients $δ(ν)$ underlying the supersymmetric zeta function grow exponentially at a rate set by the nearest zero. Each $δ(ν)$ follows from finitely many $q$-series coefficients, so interior zeros are detectable from the expansion alone and obstruct a free or s-confining infrared description, as we show for 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ SQCD. With a giant graviton expansion interior zeros are a finite $N$ effect, located by the energy of one giant graviton, verified for the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ Schur index.

Boundary lines and Askey-Wilson type moments

The Wilson line defect half-indices for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories with boundary confining phases admit a formulation in terms of the Askey-Wilson type moments. In the dual Landau-Ginzburg description the dual line operators can be realized as vortex line defects which induce singular behavior of chiral multiplets associated with the minimal monopole operators, together with additional one-dimensional degrees of freedom. By incorporating such a singular structure as an effective spin shift into the index computation, we obtain exact closed-form expressions for the line defect half-indices which are Askey-Wilson type moments.

Supersymmetric zeta functions and determinants

We define supersymmetric zeta functions and supersymmetric determinants, which can reveal spectral properties complementary to those captured by the supersymmetric indices. They play a crucial role in analyzing the Cardy-like behaviors of the supersymmetric indices and the supersymmetric Casimir energies associated with the supersymmetric partition functions. We investigate a variety of examples of the supersymmetric zeta functions and determinants for two-, four-, and six-dimensional supersymmetric field theories.

Interface line operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theories and supersymmetric indices

We study configurations of two $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories of unitary gauge groups connected by the BPS interfaces involving line operators. We find strong evidence of S-duality of the configurations as precise matching of the line defect half-indices which enumerate the BPS local operators at the junctions of the interfaces and line operators. The interface line defect half-indices are expressible as intriguing closed-form formulae involving the $q$-binomial coefficients and the principal specializations of the Schur functions.

$SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ dualities of boundary conditions in Abelian M2-brane SCFTs

We propose $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ dualities of supersymmetric boundary conditions in the three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories describing a semi-infinite M2-brane terminating on M5-branes. Specifically, we present dualities of boundary conditions for Abelian (quiver) ADHM theories and circular quiver Chern-Simons matter theories including the ABJM model. For the circular quiver Chern-Simons theories we take boundary conditions breaking a $U(1)_1 \times U(1)_{-1}$ gauge group to its diagonal subgroup which is decoupled. This can be generalized to break $U(1)_k \times U(1)_{-k}$, leaving a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ gauge theory. We find matching of the 't Hooft anomalies and supersymmetric half-indices for all the proposed dual boundary conditions.

Abelian dualities and line defect indices for 3d gauge theories

We find matching pairs of the line defect indices for 3d supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories as strong evidence of dualities of the BPS line operators. They lead to novel duality maps of the BPS line operators for $\mathcal{N}\ge 4$ supersymmetric circular and linear quiver gauge theories which can be realized as brane configurations in Type IIB string theory, including SQED, ADHM and ABJM theories.

Kac-Moody algebras from M5-giants

We examine the giant graviton expansions of the Higgs indices for the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ ADHM theories with $l$ fundamental hypermultiplets. The indices for the M5-brane giant gravitons of wrapping number $m$ appearing in the expansions consist of the contributions that generalize the characters of the W-algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{gl}(m))$ and those which realize the characters of the affine Kac-Moody algebras of type $A_{l-1}$. Also we confirm that the inverse giant graviton expansions of the resulting M5-brane indices consistently reproduce the Higgs indices.

S-duality of boundary lines in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theories and supersymmetric indices

We analyze the supersymmetric defect indices of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang Mills theories which are simultaneously decorated by the BPS line operators and the boundary conditions. We demonstrate that the two-point functions of the boundary 't Hooft lines of magnetic charges associated with the minuscule representations in the presence of the regular Nahm pole boundary conditions can be obtained by applying the Higgsing prescription to the half-indices of the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Accordingly, we find precise matching of the indices for pairs of the S-dual configurations with the Wilson lines and Neumann boundary conditions and those with the 't Hooft lines and the regular Nahm pole boundary conditions. Alternatively, we analytically compute the indices by means of the inner product of the Macdonald polynomials to find the exact closed-form expressions.

Chern-Simons theories with defects, Rogers-Ramanujan type functions and eta-products

We study the line defect half-indices of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) theories with (special)unitary, symplectic, orthogonal and exceptional gauge groups. We find that they have several beautiful infinite product $q$-series expressions in terms of Ramanujan's general theta function. For the theories with fundamental chiral multiplets, the pairs of the Neumann half-indices and one-point functions of the fundamental Wilson lines form a basis for the line defect indices in terms of the Rogers-Ramanujan type functions. Furthermore, the theories with an adjoint chiral admit the expressions as the eta-products. In particular, for the $SU(N)_{-2N}$ CS theory, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the BPS boundary local operators and the $N$-core partitions.

$\mathcal{N}=4$ line defect correlators of type BCD

We analyze the line defect correlation functions decorating the supersymmetric indices of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. We obtain exact closed-form expressions for the correlators by means of combinatorial methods associated with the group characters, including the generalized Murnaghan-Nakayama rules. The exact results for the large $N$ correlators lead to the gravity indices for the gravity dual spectrum of the fluctuations of the fundamental string wrapping $AdS_2$ and those of the fat string, the D5-brane wrapping $AdS_2$ $\times$ $\mathbb{RP}^4$.

Orbifold ETW brane and half-indices

We study the half-indices of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories of orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. We find precise matching pairs of the half-indices as strong evidence of dualities of the half-BPS boundary conditions and interfaces. The half-indices encode the spectra of excitations on the holographically dual orbifold ETW brane and giant gravitons. The exact form of the index for the orbifold ETW giant gravitons is obtained from the giant graviton expansion of the half-index.

M2-M5 giant graviton expansions

We examine the giant graviton expansions of the Coulomb and Higgs indices for the M2-brane SCFTs to find the closed-form expressions for the indices that encode the spectra of the $1/4$-BPS M5-brane giant gravitons and the $1/3$-BPS orbifold M5-brane giant gravitons. Consequently, we get exact forms of the twisted indices for the 6d $(2,0)$ theories describing a stack of $N$ M5-branes which generalize the unrefined indices. We confirm that they are also beautifully expanded with respect to the indices for the M2-brane giant gravitons which are obtained from the Coulomb and Higgs indices for the M2-brane SCFTs upon the change of variables.

Giant graviton expansions and ETW brane

We study the giant gravitons in the $AdS_4$ bagpipe geometries involving end-of-the-world (ETW) brane constructed by a single $5$-brane and either two stacks or one stack of D3-branes in Type IIB string theory. From the exact formulae and giant graviton expansions of the half-indices for the half-BPS boundary conditions and interfaces in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, we obtain the BPS spectra of the fluctuation modes of the $AdS_4$ bagpipe geometries including the ETW brane region.

ADHM Wilson line defect indices

The Coulomb and Higgs indices of the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ ADHM theories can be decorated by line defect operators as the line defect correlators. We obtain exact closed-form expressions and various non-trivial algebraic relations for the correlators of the Wilson lines in the fundamental and (anti)symmetric representations by means of the Hall-Littlewood expansion, the Fermi-gas method and the residue calculation. From the large $N$ limit of the correlators we obtain the single particle gravity indices which are expected to encode the spectra of fluctuation modes on the gravity duals of line operators in M2-brane SCFTs.

Asymptotic degeneracies of M2-brane SCFTs

We study the asymptotic growth of the degeneracy of the BPS local operators with scaling dimension $n/2$ in the three-dimensional superconformal field theories describing $N$ M2-branes. From the large $N$ supersymmetric indices we obtain the asymptotic formulas for degeneracies of the M2-brane SCFTs according to the Meinardus theorem. We observe an intriguing universal $n^{2/3}$ growth of the degeneracies in various theories of M2-brane SCFTs. We also determine the coefficients of $n^{2/3}$ growth as well as further corrections in these theories explicitly.
