Brane Cosmology from AdS/BCFT

In this paper, we study the time-dependent dynamics of an end-of-the-world (EOW) brane in AdS with a scalar field localized on the brane. We mainly studied several aspects of holography and cosmology. Standard requirements in the AdS$_{d+1}$/CFT$_d$ lead to a constraint on the conformal dimension in the dS$_d$/CFT$_{d-1}$. We also prove a time-like analog of g-theorem using the null energy condition in the context of AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$. In the cosmological interpretation, we rewrite the equation of motion of the brane as a Friedman-like equation, which enables us to consider its dynamics in analogy with the ordinal cosmology. And then we classify all possible solutions of the brane when the potential takes a constant value. We find that our brane cosmology model can describe a process of creating a universe via a big-bang. Additionally, we show that when the brane is close to a hyperplane, its effective action is given by a Liouville gravity with a scalar field matter. Finally, we also obtain brane solutions with boost symmetry, which are obtained by analytical continuation of Euclidean branes with a torus topology.

Thermal Pseudo-Entropy

In this work, we develop a generalisation of the thermal entropy to complex inverse temperatures, which we call the thermal pseudo-entropy. We show that this quantity represents the pseudo-entropy of the transition matrix between Thermofield Double states at different times. We have studied its properties in various quantum mechanical setups, Schwarzian theory, Random Matrix Theories, and 2D CFTs, including symmetric orbifolds. Our findings indicate a close relationship between the averaged thermal pseudo-entropy and the spectral form factor, which is instrumental in distinguishing chaotic and integrable models. Moreover, we have observed a logarithmic scaling of this quantity in models with a continuous spectrum, with a universal coefficient that is sensitive to the scaling of the density of states near the edge of the spectrum. Lastly, we found the connection between the real and imaginary parts of the thermal pseudo-entropy through the Kramers-Kronig relations.

Multi-entropy at low Renyi index in 2d CFTs

For a static time slice of AdS$_3$ we describe a particular class of minimal surfaces which form trivalent networks of geodesics. Through geometric arguments we provide evidence that these surfaces describe a measure of multipartite entanglement. By relating these surfaces to Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces it can be shown that this multipartite contribution is related to the angles of intersection of the bulk geodesics. A proposed boundary dual, the multi-entropy, generalizes replica trick calculations involving twist operators by considering monodromies with finite group symmetry beyond the cyclic group used for the computation of entanglement entropy. We make progress by providing explicit calculations of Renyi multi-entropy in two dimensional CFTs and geometric descriptions of the replica surfaces for several cases with low genus. We also explore aspects of the free fermion and free scalar CFTs. For the free fermion CFT we examine subtleties in the definition of the twist operators used for the calculation of Renyi multi-entropy. In particular the standard bosonization procedure used for the calculation of the usual entanglement entropy fails and a different treatment is required.

The $g$-theorem from Strong Subadditivity

We show that strong subadditivity provides a simple derivation of the $g$-theorem for the boundary renormalization group flow in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We work out its holographic interpretation and also give a derivation of the $g$-theorem for the case of an interface in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We also geometrically confirm strong subadditivity for holographic duals of conformal field theories on manifolds with boundaries.

Entanglement Phase Transition in Holographic Pseudo Entropy

In this paper, we present holographic descriptions of entanglement phase transition using AdS/BCFT. First, we analytically calculate the holographic pseudo entropy in the AdS/BCFT model with a brane localized scalar field and show the entanglement phase transition behavior where the time evolution of entropy changes from the linear growth to the trivial one via a critical logarithmic evolution. In this model, the imaginary valued scalar field localized on the brane controls the phase transition, which is analogous to the amount of projections in the measurement induced phase transition. Next, we study the AdS/BCFT model with a brane localized gauge field, where the phase transition looks different in that there is no logarithmically evolving critical point. Finally, we discuss a bulk analog of the above model by considering a double Wick rotation of the Janus solution. We compute the holographic pseudo entropy in this model and show that the entropy grows logarithmically.

SVD Entanglement Entropy

In this paper, we introduce a new quantity called SVD entanglement entropy. This is a generalization of entanglement entropy in that it depends on two different states, as in pre- and post-selection processes. This SVD entanglement entropy takes non-negative real values and is bounded by the logarithm of the Hilbert space dimensions. The SVD entanglement entropy can be interpreted as the average number of Bell pairs distillable from intermediates states. We observe that the SVD entanglement entropy gets enhanced when the two states are in the different quantum phases in an explicit example of the transverse-field Ising model. Moreover, we calculate the Rényi SVD entropy in various field theories and examine holographic calculations using the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Pseudo entropy under joining local quenches

We compute the pseudo entropy in two-dimensional holographic and free Dirac fermion CFTs for excited states under joining local quenches. Our analysis reveals two of its characteristic properties that are missing in the conventional entanglement entropy. One is that, under time evolution, the pseudo entropy exhibits a dip behavior as the excitations propagate from the joined point to the boundaries of the subsystem. The other is that the excess of pseudo entropy over entanglement entropy can be positive in holographic CFTs, whereas it is always non-positive in free Dirac fermion CFTs. We argue that the entropy excess can serve as a measure of multi-partite entanglement. Its positivity implies that the vacuum state in holographic CFTs possesses multi-partite entanglement, in contrast to free Dirac fermion CFTs.

Statistical Mechanics Approach to the Holographic Renormalization Group: Bethe Lattice Ising Model and p-adic AdS/CFT

The Bethe lattice Ising model -- a classical model of statistical mechanics for the phase transition -- provides a novel and intuitive understanding of the prototypical relationship between tensor networks and Anti-de Sitter (AdS)/conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence. After analytically formulating a holographic renormalization group for the Bethe lattice model, we demonstrate the underlying mechanism and the exact scaling dimensions for the power-law decay of boundary spin correlations by introducing the relation between the lattice network and an effective Poincare metric on a unit disk. We compare the Bethe lattice model in the high-temperature region with a scalar field in AdS$_2$, and then discuss its more direct connection to the p-adic AdS/CFT. In addition, we find that the phase transition in the interior induces a crossover behavior of boundary spin correlations, depending on the depth of the corresponding correlation path.

A Half de Sitter Holography

A long-standing and intriguing question is: does the holographic principle apply to cosmologies like de Sitter spacetime? In this work, we consider a half dS spacetime wherein a timelike boundary encloses the bulk spacetime, presenting a version of de Sitter holography. By analyzing the holographic entanglement entropy in this space and comparing it with that in AdS/CFT, we argue that gravity on a half dS$_{d+1}$ is dual to a highly non-local field theory residing on dS$_d$ boundary. This non-locality induces a breach in the subadditivity of holographic entanglement entropy. Remarkably, this observation can be linked to another argument that time slices in global de Sitter space overestimate the degrees of freedom by redundantly counting the same Hilbert space multiple times.

Gluing AdS/CFT

In this paper, we investigate gluing together two Anti-de Sitter (AdS) geometries along a timelike brane, which corresponds to coupling two brane field theories (BFTs) through gravitational interactions in the dual holographic perspective. By exploring the general conditions for this gluing process, we show that the energy stress tensors of the BFTs backreact on the dynamical metric in a manner reminiscent of the TTbar deformation. In particular, we present explicit solutions for the three-dimensional case with chiral excitations and further construct perturbative solutions with non-chiral excitations.

AdS/BCFT with Brane-Localized Scalar Field

In this paper, we study the dynamics of end-of-the-world (EOW) branes in AdS with scalar fields localized on the branes as a new class of gravity duals of CFTs on manifolds with boundaries. This allows us to construct explicit solutions dual to boundary RG flows. We also obtain a variety of annulus-like or cone-like shaped EOW branes, which are not possible without the scalar field. We also present a gravity dual of a CFT on a strip with two different boundary conditions due to the scalar potential, where we find the confinement/deconfinement-like transition as a function of temperature and the scalar potential. Finally, we point out that this phase transition is closely related to the measurement-induced phase transition, via a Wick rotation.

Timelike entanglement entropy

We define a new complex-valued measure of information called the timelike entanglement entropy (EE) which in the boundary theory can be viewed as a Wick rotation that changes a spacelike boundary subregion to a timelike one. An explicit definition of the timelike EE in 2d field theories is provided followed by numerical computations which agree with the analytic continuation of the replica method for CFTs. We argue that timelike EE should be correctly interpreted as another measure previously considered, the pseudo entropy, which is the von Neumann entropy of a reduced transition matrix. Our results strongly imply that the imaginary part of the pseudo entropy describes an emergent time which generalizes the notion of an emergent space from quantum entanglement. For holographic systems we define the timelike EE as the total complex valued area of a particular stationary combination of both space and timelike extremal surfaces which are homologous to the boundary region. For the examples considered we find explicit matching of our optimization procedure and the careful implementation of the Wick rotation in the boundary CFT. We also make progress on higher dimensional generalizations and relations to holographic pseudo entropy in de Sitter space.

Free Fermion Cyclic/Symmetric Orbifold CFTs and Entanglement Entropy

In this paper we study the properties of two-dimensional CFTs defined by cyclic and symmetric orbifolds of free Dirac fermions, especially by focusing on the partition function and entanglement entropy. Via the bosonization, we construct the twist operators which glue two complex planes to calculate the partition function of Z_2 orbifold CFT on a torus. We also find an expression of Z_N cyclic orbifold in terms of Hecke operators, which provides an explicit relation between the partition functions of cyclic orbifolds and those of symmetric ones. We compute the entanglement entropy and Renyi entropy in cyclic orbifolds on a circle both for finite temperature states and for time-dependent states under quantum quenches. We find that the replica method calculation is highly non-trivial and new because of the contributions from replicas with different boundary conditions. We find the full expression for the Z_2 orbifold and show that the periodicity gets doubled. Finally, we discuss extensions of our results on entanglement entropy to symmetric orbifold CFTs and make a heuristic argument towards holographic CFTs.

Pseudo Entropy in dS/CFT and Time-like Entanglement Entropy

We study holographic entanglement entropy in dS/CFT and introduce time-like entanglement entropy in CFTs. Both of them take complex values in general and are related with each other via an analytical continuation. We argue that they are correctly understood as pseudo entropy. We find that the imaginary part of pseudo entropy implies an emergence of time in dS/CFT.

Wedge Holography in Flat Space and Celestial Holography

In this paper, we study codimension two holography in flat spacetimes, based on the idea of the wedge holography. We propose that a region in a $d+1$ dimensional flat spacetime surrounded by two end of the world-branes, which are given by $d$ dimensional hyperbolic spaces, is dual to a conformal field theory (CFT) on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Similarly, we also propose that a $d+1$ dimensional region in the flat spacetime bounded by two $d$ dimensional de Sitter spaces is holographically dual to a CFT on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Our calculations of the partition function, holographic entanglement entropy and two point functions, support these duality relations and imply that such CFTs are non-unitary. Finally, we glue these two dualities along null surfaces to realize a codimension two holography for a full Minkowski spacetime and discuss a possible connection to the celestial holography.

Brane Dynamics of Holographic BCFTs

In this paper we study various dynamical aspects of the AdS/BCFT correspondence in higher dimensions. We study properties of holographic stress energy tensor by analyzing the metric perturbation in the gravity dual. We also calculate the stress energy tensor for a locally excited state on a half plane in a free scalar CFT. Both of them satisfy a reflective boundary condition that is expected for any BCFTs. We also study the behavior of the scalar field perturbation in the AdS/BCFT setup and show that they also show complete reflections. Moreover, we find that the entanglement entropy of a BCFT computed from the AdS/BCFT matched with that calculated from the Island formula, which supports the Island/BCFT correspondence in higher dimensions. Finally we show how we can calculate one point functions in a BCFT in our gravity dual.

CFT duals of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity

We present a class of dS/CFT correspondence between two-dimensional CFTs and three-dimensional de Sitter spaces. We argue that such a CFT includes an SU$(2)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -2$, which corresponds to the classical gravity limit. We can generalize this dS/CFT by considering the SU$(N)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -N$, dual to the higher-spin gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We confirm that under this proposed duality the classical partition function in the gravity side can be reproduced from CFT calculations. We also point out a duality relation known in higher-spin holography provides further evidence. Moreover, we analyze two-point functions and entanglement entropy in our dS/CFT correspondence. Possible spectrum and quantum corrections in the gravity theory are discussed.

Zoo of holographic moving mirrors

We systematically study moving mirror models in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). By focusing on their late-time behavior, we separate the mirror profiles into four classes, named type A (timelike) mirrors, type B (escaping) mirrors, type C (chasing) mirrors, and type D (terminated) mirrors. We analytically explore the characteristic features of the energy flux and entanglement entropy for each type and work out their physical interpretation. Moreover, we construct their gravity duals for which end-of-the-world (EOW) branes play a crucial role. Depending on the mirror type, the profiles of the EOW branes show distinct behaviors. In addition, we also provide a criterion that decides whether the replica method in CFTs computes entanglement entropy or pseudo entropy in moving mirror models.
