Disordered Systems and the Replica Method in AdS/CFT

We formulate a holographic description of effects of disorder in conformal field theories based on the replica method and the AdS/CFT correspondence. Starting with $n$ copies of conformal field theories, randomness with a gaussian distribution is described by a deformation of double trace operators. After computing physical quantities, we take the $n \to 0$ limit at the final step. We compute correlation functions in the disordered systems by using the holographic replica method as well as the formulation in the conformal field theory. We find examples where disorder changes drastically the scaling of two point functions. The renormalization group flow of the effective central charge in our disordered systems is also discussed.

Fuzzy Ring from M2-brane Giant Torus

We construct spinning dual M2 giant gravitons in AdS_4 x S^7, which generically become 1/16 BPS states, and show that their world-volumes become torii. By taking an orbifold, we obtain spinning dielectric D2-brane configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3 dual to specific BPS operators in ABJM theory. This reveals a novel mechanism how to give an angular momentum to a dielectric D2-brane. We also find that when its angular momentum in the AdS_4 becomes large, it approaches to a ring-like object. Our result might suggest an existence of supersymmetric black rings in the AdS_4 background. We will also discuss dual giant gravitons in AdS_4 x CP^3.

On Type IIA Penrose Limit and N=6 Chern-Simons Theories

Recently, Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena proposed that the N=6 Chern-Simons gauge theories are holographically dual to the M-theory backgrounds with multiple M2-branes on orbifolds C^4/Z_k. When k is large, they have the type IIA string description. In this paper we analyze the Penrose limit of this IIA background and express the string spectrum as the conformal dimensions of operators in the gauge theories. For BPS operators, we can confirm the agreements between the IIA string on plane waves and the gauge theories. We point out that there exist BMN-like operators in the gauge theories, though their holographic interpretation does not seem to be simple. Also we analyze the weak coupling limit of this theory and show that the Hagedorn/deconfinement transition occurs as expected.

Geometric Entropy and Hagedorn/Deconfinement Transition

It has recently been proposed that the entanglement entropy can be an order parameter of confinement/deconfinement transitions. To find a clear evidence, we introduce a new quantity called the geometric entropy, which is related to the entanglement entropy via a double Wick rotation. We analyze the geometric entropy and manifestly show that its value becomes discontinuous at the Hagedorn temperature both in the free N =4 super Yang-Mills and in its supergravity dual.

Decaying D-branes and Moving Mirrors

We present an exact time-dependent solution to the effective D-brane world-volume theory which describes an inhomogeneous decay of a brane-antibrane system. We compute the quantum energy flux induced by the particle creation in this inhomogeneous and time-dependent background. We find that this calculation is essentially equivalent to that of the moving mirror system. In the initial stage, the energy flux turns out to be thermal with the temperature given by the inverse of the distance between the brane and the antibrane. Later it changes its sign and becomes a negative energy flux. Our result may be relevant for the (p)reheating process or/and the evolution of cosmic string network after stringy brane inflation.

Near Extremal Black Hole Entropy as Entanglement Entropy via AdS2/CFT1

We point out that the entropy of (near) extremal black holes can be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of dual conformal quantum mechanics via AdS2/CFT1. As an explicit example, we study near extremal BTZ black holes and derive this claim from AdS3/CFT2. We also analytically compute the entanglement entropy in the two dimensional CFT of a free Dirac fermion compactified on a circle at finite temperature. From this result, we clarify the relation between the thermal entropy and entanglement entropy, which is essential for the entanglement interpretation of black hole entropy.

Holographic Calculation of Boundary Entropy

We use the holographic proposal for calculating entanglement entropies to determine the boundary entropy of defects in strongly coupled two-dimensional conformal field theories. We study several examples including the Janus solution and show that the boundary entropy extracted from the entanglement entropy as well as its more conventional definition via the free energy agree with each other. Maybe somewhat surprisingly we find that, unlike in the case of a conformal field theory with boundary, the entanglement entropy for a generic region in a theory with defect carries detailed information about the microscopic details of the theory. We also argue that the g-theorem for the boundary entropy is closely related to the strong subadditivity of the entanglement entropy.

Free Yang-Mills vs. Toric Sasaki-Einstein

It has been known that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole in AdS_5 * S^5 agrees with the free N=4 super Yang-Mills entropy up to the famous factor 4/3. This factor can be interpreted as the ratio of the entropy of the free Yang-Mills to the entropy of the strongly coupled Yang-Mills. In this paper we compute this factor for infinitely many N=1 SCFTs which are dual to toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We observed that this ratio always takes values within a narrow range around 4/3. We also present explicit values of volumes and central charges for new classes of toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.

A holographic proof of the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy

When a quantum system is divided into subsystems, their entanglement entropies are subject to an inequality known as "strong subadditivity". For a field theory this inequality can be stated as follows: given any two regions of space $A$ and $B$, $S(A) + S(B) \ge S(A \cup B) + S(A \cap B)$. Recently, a method has been found for computing entanglement entropies in any field theory for which there is a holographically dual gravity theory. In this note we give a simple geometrical proof of strong subadditivity employing this holographic prescription.

AdS Bubbles, Entropy and Closed String Tachyons

We study the conjectured connection between AdS bubbles (AdS solitons) and closed string tachyon condensations. We confirm that the entanglement entropy, which measures the degree of freedom, decreases under the tachyon condensation. The entropies in supergravity and free Yang-Mills agree with each other remarkably. Next we consider the tachyon condensation on the AdS twisted circle and argue that its endpoint is given by the twisted AdS bubble, defined by the double Wick rotation of rotating black 3-brane solutions. We calculated the Casimir energy and entropy and checked the agreements between the gauge and gravity results. Finally we show an infinite boost of a null linear dilaton theory with a tachyon wall (or bubble), leads to a solvable time-dependent background with a bulk tachyon condensation. This is the simplest example of spacetimes with null boundaries in string theory.

AdS/CFT and Strong Subadditivity of Entanglement Entropy

Recently, a holographic computation of the entanglement entropy in conformal field theories has been proposed via the AdS/CFT correspondence. One of the most important properties of the entanglement entropy is known as the strong subadditivity. This requires that the entanglement entropy should be a concave function with respect to geometric parameters. It is a non-trivial check on the proposal to see if this property is indeed satisfied by the entropy computed holographically. In this paper we examine several examples which are defined by annuli or cusps, and confirm the strong subadditivity via direct calculations. Furthermore, we conjecture that Wilson loop correlators in strongly coupled gauge theories satisfy the same relation. We also discuss the relation between the holographic entanglement entropy and the Bousso bound.

Aspects of Holographic Entanglement Entropy

This is an extended version of our short report hep-th/0603001, where a holographic interpretation of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. In addition to a concise review of relevant recent progresses of entanglement entropy and details omitted in the earlier letter, this paper includes the following several new results : We give a more direct derivation of our claim which relates the entanglement entropy with the minimal area surfaces in the AdS_3/CFT_2 case as well as some further discussions on higher dimensional cases. Also the relation between the entanglement entropy and central charges in 4D conformal field theories is examined. We check that the logarithmic part of the 4D entanglement entropy computed in the CFT side agrees with the AdS_5 result at least under a specific condition. Finally we estimate the entanglement entropy of massive theories in generic dimensions by making use of our proposal.

String Theory in Beta Deformed Spacetimes

Fluxbrane-like backgrounds obtained from flat space by a sequence of T-dualities and shifts of polar coordinates (beta deformations) provide an interesting class of exactly solvable string theories. We compute the one-loop partition function for various such deformed spaces and study their spectrum of D-branes. For rational values of the B-field these models are equivalent to Z_N \times Z_N orbifolds with discrete torsion. We also obtain an interesting new class of time-dependent backgrounds which resemble localized closed string tachyon condensation.

Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from AdS/CFT

A holographic derivation of the entanglement entropy in quantum (conformal) field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the entanglement entropy in d+1 dimensional conformal field theories can be obtained from the area of d dimensional minimal surfaces in AdS_{d+2}, analogous to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula for black hole entropy. We show that our proposal perfectly reproduces the correct entanglement entropy in 2D CFT when applied to AdS_3. We also compare the entropy computed in AdS_5 \times S^5 with that of the free N=4 super Yang-Mills.

Ghost D-branes

We define a ghost D-brane in superstring theories as an object that cancels the effects of an ordinary D-brane. The supergroups U(N|M) and OSp(N|M) arise as gauge symmetries in the supersymmetric world-volume theory of D-branes and ghost D-branes. A system with a pair of D-brane and ghost D-brane located at the same location is physically equivalent to the closed string vacuum. When they are separated, the system becomes a new brane configuration. We generalize the type I/heterotic duality by including n ghost D9-branes on the type I side and by considering the heterotic string whose gauge group is OSp(32+2n|2n). Motivated by the type IIB S-duality applied to D9- and ghost D9-branes, we also find type II-like closed superstrings with U(n|n) gauge symmetry.

On the Connection between N=2 Minimal String and (1,n) Bosonic Minimal String

We study the scattering amplitudes in the N=2 minimal string or equivalently in the N=4 topological string on ALE spaces. We find an interesting connection between the tree level amplitudes of the N=2 minimal string and those of the (1,n) minimal bosonic string. In particular we show that the four and five-point functions of the N=2 string can be directly rewritten in terms of those of the latter theory. This relation offers a map of physical states between these two string theories. Finally we propose a possible matrix model dual for the N=2 minimal string in the light of this connection.

Notes on S-Matrix of Non-critical N=2 String

In this paper we discuss the scattering S-matrix of non-critical N=2 string at tree level. First we consider the \hat{c}<1 string defined by combining the N=2 time-like linear dilaton SCFT with the N=2 Liouville theory. We compute three particle scattering amplitudes explicitly and find that they are actually vanishing. We also find an evidence that this is true for higher amplitudes. Next we analyze another \hat{c}<1 string obtained from the N=2 time-like Liouville theory, which is closely related to the N=2 minimal string. In this case, we find a non-trivial expression for the three point functions. When we consider only chiral primaries, the amplitudes are very similar to those in the (1,n) non-critical bosonic string.

c < 1 String from Two Dimensional Black Holes

We study a topological string description of the c < 1 non-critical string whose matter part is defined by the time-like linear dilaton CFT. We show that the topologically twisted N=2 SL(2,R)/U(1) model (or supersymmetric 2D black hole) is equivalent to the c < 1 non-critical string compactified at a specific radius by comparing their physical spectra and correlation functions. We examine another equivalent description in the topological Landau-Ginzburg model and check that it reproduces the same scattering amplitudes. We also discuss its matrix model dual description.
