IgA-BEM for 3D Helmholtz problems on multi-patch domains using B-spline tailored numerical integration

An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, which makes possible a function--by--function implementation of the matrix assembly phase. Spline quasi-interpolation is the common ingredient of all the considered quadrature rules; in the singular case it is combined with a B-spline recursion over the spline degree and with a singularity extraction technique, extended to the multi-patch setting for the first time. A threshold selection strategy is proposed to automatically distinguish between nearly singular and regular integrals. Numerical examples on relevant benchmarks show that the expected convergence orders are achieved with uniform discretization and a small number of uniformly spaced quadrature nodes.

Isoparametric singularity extraction technique for 3D potential problems in BEM

To solve boundary integral equations for potential problems using collocation Boundary Element Method (BEM) on smooth curved 3D geometries, an analytical singularity extraction technique is employed. By adopting the isoparametric approach, curved geometries that are represented by mapped rectangles or triangles from the parametric domain are considered. The singularity extraction on the governing singular integrals can be performed either as an operation of subtraction or division, each having some advantages. A particular series expansion of a singular kernel about a source point is investigated. The series in the intrinsic coordinates consists of functions of a type $R^p x^q y^r$, where $R$ is a square root of a quadratic bivariate homogeneous polynomial, corresponding to the first fundamental form of a smooth surface, and $p,q,r$ are integers, satisfying $p\leq -1$ and $q,r \geq 0$. By extracting more terms from the series expansion of the singular kernel, the smoothness of the regularized kernel at the source point can be increased. Analytical formulae for integrals of such terms are obtained from antiderivatives of $R^p x^q y^r$, using recurrence formulae, and by evaluating them at the edges of rectangular or triangular parametric domains. Numerical tests demonstrate that the singularity extraction technique can be a useful prerequisite for a numerical quadrature scheme to obtain accurate evaluations of the governing singular integrals in 3D collocation BEM.

Construction of $G^2$ planar Hermite interpolants with prescribed arc lengths

In this paper we address the problem of constructing $G^2$ planar Pythagorean--hodograph (PH) spline curves, that interpolate points, tangent directions and curvatures, and have prescribed arc-length. The interpolation scheme is completely local. Each spline segment is defined as a PH biarc curve of degree $7$, which results in having a closed form solution of the $G^2$ interpolation equations depending on four free parameters. By fixing two of them to zero, it is proven that the length constraint can be satisfied for any data and any chosen ratio between the two boundary tangents. Length interpolation equation reduces to one algebraic equation with four solutions in general. To select the best one, the value of the bending energy is observed. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the obtained theoretical results and to numerically confirm that the approximation order is $5$.

Weighted quadrature for hierarchical B-splines

We present weighted quadrature for hierarchical B-splines to address the fast formation of system matrices arising from adaptive isogeometric Galerkin methods with suitably graded hierarchical meshes. By exploiting a local tensor-product structure, we extend the construction of weighted rules from the tensor-product to the hierarchical spline setting. The proposed algorithm has a computational cost proportional to the number of degrees of freedom and advantageous properties with increasing spline degree. To illustrate the performance of the method and confirm the theoretical estimates, a selection of 2D and 3D numerical tests is provided.

A study on spline quasi-interpolation based quadrature rules for the isogeometric Galerkin BEM

Two recently introduced quadrature schemes for weakly singular integrals [Calabr\`o et al. J. Comput. Appl. Math. 2018] are investigated in the context of boundary integral equations arising in the isogeometric formulation of Galerkin Boundary Element Method (BEM). In the first scheme, the regular part of the integrand is approximated by a suitable quasi--interpolation spline. In the second scheme the regular part is approximated by a product of two spline functions. The two schemes are tested and compared against other standard and novel methods available in literature to evaluate different types of integrals arising in the Galerkin formulation. Numerical tests reveal that under reasonable assumptions the second scheme convergences with the optimal order in the Galerkin method, when performing $h$-refinement, even with a small amount of quadrature nodes. The quadrature schemes are validated also in numerical examples to solve 2D Laplace problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

An adaptive IGA-BEM with hierarchical B-splines based on quasi-interpolation quadrature schemes

The isogeometric formulation of Boundary Element Method (BEM) is investigated within the adaptivity framework. Suitable weighted quadrature rules to evaluate integrals appearing in the Galerkin BEM formulation of 2D Laplace model problems are introduced. The new quadrature schemes are based on a spline quasi-interpolant (QI) operator and properly framed in the hierarchical setting. The local nature of the QI perfectly fits with hierarchical spline constructions and leads to an efficient and accurate numerical scheme. An automatic adaptive refinement strategy is driven by a residual based error estimator. Numerical examples show that the optimal convergence rate of the BEM solution is recovered by the proposed adaptive method.

Hermite parametric surface interpolation based on Argyris element

In this paper, Hermite interpolation by parametric spline surfaces on triangulations is considered. The splines interpolate points, the corresponding tangent planes and normal curvature forms at domain vertices and approximate tangent planes at midpoints of domain edges. Two variations of the scheme are studied: C1 quintic and G1 octic. The latter is of higher polynomial degree but can approximate surfaces of arbitrary topology. The construction of the approximant is local and fast. Some numerical examples of surface approximation are presented.

Adaptive isogeometric analysis with hierarchical box splines

Isogeometric analysis is a recently developed framework based on finite element analysis, where the simple building blocks in geometry and solution space are replaced by more complex and geometrically-oriented compounds. Box splines are an established tool to model complex geometry, and form an intermediate approach between classical tensor-product B-splines and splines over triangulations. Local refinement can be achieved by considering hierarchically nested sequences of box spline spaces. Since box splines do not offer special elements to impose boundary conditions for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs), we discuss a weak treatment of such boundary conditions. Along the domain boundary, an appropriate domain strip is introduced to enforce the boundary conditions in a weak sense. The thickness of the strip is adaptively defined in order to avoid unnecessary computations. Numerical examples show the optimal convergence rate of box splines and their hierarchical variants for the solution of PDEs.

On positivity of principal minors of bivariate Bezier collocation matrix

It is well known that the bivariate polynomial interpolation problem at domain points of a triangle is correct. Thus the corresponding interpolation matrix $M$ is nonsingular. L.L. Schumaker stated the conjecture, that the determinant of $M$ is positive. Furthermore, all its principal minors are conjectured to be positive, too. This result would solve the constrained interpolation problem. In this paper, the basic conjecture for the matrix $M$, the conjecture on minors of polynomials for degree <=17 and for some particular configurations of domain points are confirmed.
