Interplay of spin orbit interaction and Andreev reflection in proximized quantum dots

We investigate a hybrid device consisting of two quantum dots placed between a BCS superconductor and a semiconductor with a strong spin-orbit interaction. Assuming charge tunneling between quantum dots through spin-flip processes, we study the molecular Andreev bound states appearing in the proximized quantum dots. We show that the spin-orbit coupling splits a pair of the Andreev states into four in-gap quasiparticles. For the appropriate set of model parameters, two of these internal quasiparticle states merge, forming the zero-energy state. Under such circumstances, we obtain fully spin-polarized versions of the Majorana quasiparticles, localized on different quantum dots. This happens solely when the spin-orbit interaction is equally strong to the magnitude of crossed Andreev reflections, i.e. in the sweet spot. Otherwise, these processes are competitive, as can be observed in changes of the expectation values of the corresponding order parameters. We analyze signatures of such competition manifested under the nonequilibrium conditions for various configurations of the bias voltage. In particular, for the symmetric bias voltage between the normal electrodes and the Cooper pair splitter bias configuration, we reveal duality in the transport properties. Charge transport through the zero-energy state at the sweet spot is contributed by perfectly entangled electrons with an (almost) ideal transmission. Transport studies would thus enable empirical detection of the molecular quasiparticle states and the efficiency of dissipation processes caused by the external normal electrodes.

Interplay of correlations and Majorana mode from local solution perspective

We study the quasiparticle spectrum of a hybrid system, comprising a correlated (Anderson-type) quantum dot coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting the Majorana boundarymodes. From the exact solution of the low-energy effective Hamiltonian, we uncover a subtle interplay between Coulomb repulsion and the Majorana mode. Our analytical expressions show that the spectral weight of the leaking Majorana mode is sensitive to both the quantum dot energy level and the repulsive potential. We compare our results with estimations by L.S. Ricco et al. Phys. Rev. B 99, 155159 (2019) obtained for the same hybrid structure using the Hubbard-type decoupling scheme, and analytically quantify the spectral weight of the zero-energy (topological) mode coexisting with the finite-energy (trivial) states of the quantum dot. We also show that empirical verification of these spectral weights could be feasible through spin-polarized Andreev spectroscopy.

Signatures of Kondo-Majorana interplay in ac response

We analyze dynamical transport properties of a hybrid nanostructure, comprising a correlated quantum dot embedded between the source and drain electrodes, which are subject to an ac voltage, focusing on signatures imprinted on the charge transport by the side-attached Majorana zero-energy mode. The considerations are based on the Kubo formula, for which the relevant correlation functions are determined by using the numerical renormalization group approach, which allows us to consider the correlation effects due to the Coulomb repulsion and their interplay with the Majorana mode in a non-perturbative manner. We point out universal features of the dynamical conductance, showing up in the Kondo-Majorana regime, and differentiate them against the conventional Kondo and Majorana systems. In particular, we predict that the Majorana quasiparticles give rise to universal fractional values of the ac conductance in the well-defined frequency range below the peak at the Kondo scale. We also show this Kondo scale to actually increase with strengthening the coupling to the topological superconducting wire.

Topological superconductivity in Fibonacci quasicrystals

We investigate the properties of a Fibonacci quasicrystal (QC) arrangement of a one-dimensional topological superconductor, such as a magnetic atom chain deposited on a superconducting surface. We uncover a general mutually exclusive competition between the QC properties and the topological superconducting phase with Majorana bound states (MBS): there are no MBS inside the QC gaps and the MBS never behaves as QC subgap states, and likewise, no critical, or winding, QC subgap states exist inside the topological superconducting gaps. Surprisingly, despite this competition, we find that the QC is still highly beneficial for realizing topological superconductivity with MBS. It both leads to additional large nontrivial regions with MBS in parameter space, that are topologically trivial in crystalline systems, and increases the topological gap protecting the MBS. We also find that shorter approximants of the Fibonacci QC display the largest benefits. As a consequence, our results promote QCs, and especially their short approximants, as an appealing platform for improved experimental possibilities to realize MBS as well as generally highlights the fundamental interplay between different topologies.

Hallmarks of Majorana mode leaking into a hybrid double quantum dot

We investigate the spectral and transport properties of a double quantum dot laterally attached to a topological superconducting nanowire, hosting the Majorana zero-energy modes. Specifically, we consider a geometry, in which the outer quantum dot is embedded between the external normal and superconducting leads, forming a circuit. First, we derive analytical expressions for the bound states in the case of an uncorrelated system and discuss their signatures in the tunneling spectroscopy. Then, we explore the case of strongly correlated quantum dots by performing the numerical renormalization group calculations, focusing on the interplay and relationship between the leaking Majorana mode and the Kondo states on both quantum dots. Finally, we discuss feasible means to experimentally probe the in-gap quasiparticles by using the Andreev spectroscopy based on the particle-to-hole scattering mechanism.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in a mesoscopic superconducting system

We inspect signatures of dynamical quantum phase transitions driven by two types of quenches acting on a correlated quantum dot embedded between superconducting and metallic reservoirs. Under stationary conditions the proximity induced on-dot pairing combined with the strong Coulomb repulsion prefers the quantum dot to be either in the singly occupied (spinful) or BCS-type (spinless) ground state configuration. We study the time evolution upon traversing such a phase boundary due to quantum quenches by means of the time-dependent numerical renormalization group approach, revealing non-analytic features in the low-energy return rate. Quench protocols can be realized in a controllable manner and we are confident that detection of this dynamical singlet-doublet phase transition would be feasible by the charge tunnelling spectroscopy.

Unconventional topological transitions in a self-organized magnetic ladder

It is commonly assumed that topological phase transitions in topological superconductors are accompanied by a closing of the topological gap or a change of the symmetry of the system. We demonstrate that an unconventional topological phase transition with neither gap closing nor a change of symmetry is possible. We consider a nanoscopic length ladder of atoms on a superconducting substrate, comprising self-organized magnetic moments coupled to itinerant electrons. For a range of conditions, the ground state of such a system prefers helical magnetic textures, self-sustaining topologically nontrivial phase. Abrupt changes in the magnetic order as a function of induced superconducting pairing or chemical potential can cause topological phase transitions without closing the topological gap. Furthermore, the ground state prefers either parallel or anti-parallel configurations along the rungs, and the anti-parallel configuration causes an emergent time reversal asymmetry protecting Kramer's pair's of Majorana zero modes, but in a BDI topological superconductor. We determine the topological invariant and inspect the boundary Majorana zero modes.

In-gap states of magnetic impurity in quantum spin Hall insulator proximitized to a superconductor

We study in-gap states of a single magnetic impurity embedded in a honeycomb monolayer which is deposited on superconducting substrate. The intrinsic spin-orbit coupling induces the quantum spin Hall insulating (QSHI) phase gapped around the Fermi energy. Under such circumstances we consider the emergence of Shiba-like bound states driven by the superconducting proximity effect. We investigate their topography, spin-polarization and signatures of the quantum phase transition manifested by reversal of the local currents circulating around the magnetic impurity. These phenomena might be important for more exotic in-gap quasiparticles in such complex nanostructures as magnetic nanowires or islands, where the spin-orbit interaction along with the proximity induced electron pairing give rise to topological phases hosting the protected boundary modes.

How to measure the Majorana polarization of a topological planar Josephson junction

We analyze the topological superconductivity and investigate the spectroscopic properties manifested by the zero-energy modes, induced in a metallic strip embedded into a Josephson-type junction. Focusing on the Majorana polarization of such quasiparticles, we propose feasible means for its empirical detection, using the spin-selective Andreev reflection method. Our study reveals a gradual development of a transverse gradient of the Majorana polarization across the metallic strip upon increasing its width. We also inspect the spatial profile and polarization of the Majorana quasiparticles in the presence of a strong electrostatic impurity. We show that, depending on its position, such a defect can lead to a substantial localization of the Majorana mode.

Statistical correlations of currents flowing via proximized quantum dot

Statistical properties of the electron transport flowing through nanostructures are strongly influenced by the interactions, geometry of the system and/or by type of the external electrodes. These factors affect not only the average current induced in the system but also contribute to fluctuations in the flux of charges and their correlations. Due to possible applications of the hybrid nano-systems, containing one or more superconducting electrodes, a detailed understanding of the flow of charge and its fluctuations seems to be of primary importance. Coulomb repulsion between electrons usually strongly affect the current-current correlation function. In this work we study the correlations in the charge flow through such interacting quantum dot contacted to one superconducting and two normal electrodes. This set-up allows for analysis of the Andreev scattering events in the correlations of currents flowing between external electrodes and, in particular, gives access to cross-correlations between currents from/to different normal electrodes. Our approach relies on the master equation technique, which properly captures the Coulomb interactions. We study the finite frequency correlations and find the relaxation processes, related to the high frequency charge and low frequency polarisation fluctuations. The multiterminal structure of here studied single electron device allows to analyze a competition between the intra- and inter-channel correlations. In the appropriate limit of the interacting quantum dot embedded between two normal electrodes our calculations quantitatively describe the recent experimental data on the frequency dependent correlations. This shows a promising potential of the method for description of the hybrid systems with superconducting electrode(s).

Dimerization-induced topological superconductivity in a Rashba nanowire

We analyze influence of a dimerization on the topological phases of the Rashba nanowire proximitized to a superconducting substrate. We find that periodic alternations of the hopping integral and spin-orbit coupling can lead to band inversion, inducing transition to topologically nontrivial superconducting phase that hosts the Majorana zero-energy modes. This "dimerization-induced topological superconductivity" completely repels the topological phase of the uniform nanowire, whenever they happen to overlap. We provide an analytical justification for this puzzling behavior based on the symmetry/parity considerations and discuss feasible spectroscopic methods for its empirical observation. We also test stability of the topological superconducting phases against electrostatic disorder.

Leakage of Majorana mode into correlated quantum dot nearby its singlet-doublet crossover

We study quasiparticle spectrum of the correlated quantum dot deposited on superconducting substrate which is side-coupled to the Rashba nanochain, hosting Majorana end modes. Ground state of an isolated quantum dot proximitized to superconducting reservoirs is represented either by the singly occupied site or BCS-type superposition of the empty and doubly occupied configurations. Quantum phase transition between these distinct ground states is spectroscopically manifested by the in-gap Andreev states which cross each other at the Fermi level. This qualitatively affects leakage of the Majorana mode from the side-attached nanowire. We inspect the spin-selective relationship between the trivial Andreev states and the leaking Majorana mode, considering (i) perfectly polarized case, when tunneling of one spin component is completely prohibited, and (ii) another one when both spins are hybridized with the nanowire but with different couplings.

Delocalisation of Majorana quasiparticles in plaquette--nanowire hybrid system

Interplay between superconductivity, spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field can lead to realisation of the topologically non--trivial states which in finite one dimensional nanowires are manifested by emergence of a pair of zero-energy Majorana bound states. On the other hand, in two dimensional systems spin current contributed by the edge states might appear. We investigate novel properties of the bound states in a system of mixed dimensionality, composed of one-dimensional nanowire connected with two-dimensional plaquette. This setup could be patterned epitaxially, e.g. using heterostructure analogous to what has been reported recently by F. Nichele et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 136803 (2017). We study this system, assuming either its part or the entire structure to be in topologically non--trivial superconducting state. Our results predict delocalisation of the Majorana modes, upon leaking from the nanowire to the nanocluster with some tendency towards its corners.

Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states of impurities in a triangular lattice of NbSe$_{2}$ with spin orbit coupling

We study topography of the spin-polarized bound states of magnetic impurities embedded in triangular lattice of a superconducting host. Such states have been observed experimentally in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$ crystal [G. C. M'enard et al., Nat.Phys. 11, 1013 (2015)] and revealed the oscillating particle-hole asymmetry extending to tens of nanometers. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach we explore the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in presence of spin-orbit interaction. We also study the bound states of double impurities for several relative positions in a triangular lattice.

On controlling the bound states in quantum-dot hybrid-nanowire

Recent experiments using the quantum dot coupled to the topological superconducting nanowire [M.T. Deng et al., Science 354, 1557 (2016)}] revealed that zero-energy bound state coalesces from the Andreev bound states. Such quasiparticle states, present in the quantum dot, can be controlled by the magnetic and electrostatic means. We use microscopic model of the quantum-dot--nanowire structure to reproduce the experimental results, applying the Bogoliubov--de~Gennes technique. This is done by studying the gate voltage dependence of the various types of bound states and mutual influence between them. We show that the zero energy bound states can emerge from the Andreev bound states in topologically trivial phase and can be controlled using various means. In non-trivial topological phase we show the possible resonance between this zero energy levels with Majorana bound states. We discuss and explain this phenomena as a result of dominant spin character of discussed bound states. Presented results can be applied in experimental studies by using the proposed nanodevice.

Quantum engineering of Majorana quasiparticles in one-dimensional optical lattices

We propose a feasible way of engineering Majorana-type quasiparticles in ultracold fermionic gases on a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. For this purpose, imbalanced ultracold atoms interacting by the spin-orbit coupling should be hybridized with a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) molecular cloud. By constraining the profile of an internal defect potential we show that the Majorana-type excitations can be created or annihilated. This process is modelled within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. This study is relevant also to nanoscopic 1D superconductors where modification of the internal defect potential can be obtained by electrostatic means.

Josephson-phase-controlled interplay between correlation effects and electron pairing in a three-terminal nanostructure

We study the subgap spectrum of the interacting single-level quantum dot coupled between two superconducting reservoirs, forming the Josephson-type circuit, and additionally hybridized with a metallic normal lead. This system allows for the phase-tunable interplay between the correlation effects and the proximity-induced electron pairing resulting in the singlet-doublet (0-$π$) crossover and the phase-dependent Kondo effect. We investigate the spectral function, induced local pairing, Josephson supercurrent, and Andreev conductance in a wide range of system parameters by the numerically exact Numerical Renormalization Group and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations along with perturbative treatments in terms of the Coulomb repulsion and the hybridization term. Our results address especially the correlation effects reflected in dependencies of various quantities on the local Coulomb interaction strength as well as on the coupling to the normal lead. We quantitatively establish the phase-dependent Kondo temperature $\log T_{K}(ϕ)\propto\cos^{2}(ϕ/2)$ and show that it can be read off from the half-width of the zero-bias enhancement in the Andreev conductance in the doublet phase, which can be experimentally measured by the tunneling spectroscopy.

Real space Bogolubov-de Gennes equations study of the boson-fermion model

The boson-fermion (BF) model has been proposed to describe superconductivity in short coherence length superconductors. In this work we use it to study impurity induced inhomogeneities in high temperature superconductors (HTS) as found in numerous scanning tunnelling measurements. The model has been formulated in real space and solved with help of Bogolubov-de Gennes approach. Disorder in the boson or fermion subsystem is directly coupled to the superconducting order parameter and leads to severe changes of superconducting properties like local order parameter and density of states. We present the results for many impurities randomly distributed over otherwise clean and periodic two-dimensional square lattice.
