Gradient estimates of q-harmonic functions of fractional Schrodinger operator

We study gradient estimates of $q$-harmonic functions $u$ of the fractional Schr{ö}dinger operator $Δ^{α/2} + q$, $α\in (0,1]$ in bounded domains $D \subset \R^d$. For nonnegative $u$ we show that if $q$ is H{ö}lder continuous of order $η> 1 - α$ then $\nabla u(x)$ exists for any $x \in D$ and $|\nabla u(x)| \le c u(x)/ (\dist(x,\partial D) \wedge 1)$. The exponent $1 - α$ is critical i.e. when $q$ is only $1 - α$ H{ö}lder continuous $\nabla u(x)$ may not exist. The above gradient estimates are well known for $α\in (1,2]$ under the assumption that $q$ belongs to the Kato class $\calJ^{α- 1}$. The case $α\in (0,1]$ is different. To obtain results for $α\in (0,1]$ we use probabilistic methods. As a corollary, we obtain for $α\in (0,1)$ that a weak solution of $Δ^{α/2}u + q u = 0$ is in fact a strong solution.

Invisibility via reflecting coating

We construct a subset $A$ of the unit disc with the following properties. (i) The set $A$ is the finite union of disjoint line segments. (ii) The shadow of $A$ is arbitrarily close to the shadow of the unit disc in "most" directions. (iii) If the line segments are considered to be mirrors reflecting light according to the classical law of specular reflection then most light rays hitting the set emerge on the other side of the disc moving along a parallel line and shifted by an arbitrarily small amount. We also construct a set which reflects almost all light rays coming from one direction to another direction but its shadow is arbitrarily small in other directions, except for an arbitrarily small family of directions.

On high spots of the fundamental sloshing eigenfunctions in axially symmetric domains

We investigate the classical eigenvalue problem that arises in hydrodynamics and is referred to as the sloshing problem. It describes free liquid oscillations in a liquid container W in R^3. We study the case when W is an axially symmetric, convex, bounded domain satisfying the John condition. The Cartesian coordinates (x,y,z) are chosen so that the mean free surface of the liquid lies in (x,z)-plane and y-axis is directed upwards (y-axis is the axis of symmetry). Our first result states that the fundamental eigenvalue has multiplicity 2 and for each fundamental eigenfunction phi there is a change of x,z coordinates by a rotation around y-axis so that phi is odd in x-variable. The second result of the paper gives the following monotonicity property of the fundamental eigenfunction phi. If phi is odd in x-variable then it is strictly monotonic in x-variable. This property has the following hydrodynamical meaning. If liquid oscillates freely with fundamental frequency according to phi then the free surface elevation of liquid is increasing along each line parallel to x-axis during one period of time and decreasing during the other half period. The proof of the second result is based on the method developed by D. Jerison and N. Nadirashvili for the hot spots problem for Neumann Laplacian.

Stationary distributions for jump processes with inert drift

We analyze jump processes $Z$ with ``inert drift'' determined by a ``memory'' process $S$. The state space of $(Z,S)$ is the Cartesian product of the unit circle and the real line. We prove that the stationary distribution of $(Z,S)$ is the product of the uniform probability measure and a Gaussian distribution.

We prove that the stationary distribution of $(Z,S)$ is the product of the uniform probability measure and a Gaussian distribution.

Spectral properties of the Cauchy process

We study the spectral properties of the transition semigroup of the killed one-dimensional Cauchy process on the half-line (0,infty) and the interval (-1,1). This process is related to the square root of one-dimensional Laplacian A = -sqrt(-d^2/dx^2) with a Dirichlet exterior condition (on a complement of a domain), and to a mixed Steklov problem in the half-plane. For the half-line, an explicit formula for generalized eigenfunctions psi_lambda of A is derived, and then used to construct spectral representation of A. Explicit formulas for the transition density of the killed Cauchy process in the half-line (or the heat kernel of A in (0,infty)), and for the distribution of the first exit time from the half-line follow. The formula for psi_lambda is also used to construct approximations to eigenfunctions of A in the interval. For the eigenvalues lambda_n of A in the interval the asymptotic formula lambda_n = n pi/2 - pi/8 + O(1/n) is derived, and all eigenvalues lambda_n are proved to be simple. Finally, efficient numerical methods of estimation of eigenvalues lambda_n are applied to obtain lower and upper numerical bounds for the first few eigenvalues up to 9th decimal point.

Intrinsic ultracontractivity for Schrodinger operators based on fractional Laplacians

We study the Feynman-Kac semigroup generated by the Schr{ö}dinger operator based on the fractional Laplacian $-(-Δ)^{α/2} - q$ in $\Rd$, for $q \ge 0$, $α\in (0,2)$. We obtain sharp estimates of the first eigenfunction $ϕ_1$ of the Schr{ö}dinger operator and conditions equivalent to intrinsic ultracontractivity of the Feynman-Kac semigroup. For potentials $q$ such that $\lim_{|x| \to \infty} q(x) = \infty$ and comparable on unit balls we obtain that $ϕ_1(x)$ is comparable to $(|x| + 1)^{-d - α} (q(x) + 1)^{-1}$ and intrinsic ultracontractivity holds iff $\lim_{|x| \to \infty} q(x)/\log|x| = \infty$. Proofs are based on uniform estimates of $q$-harmonic functions.

On the Traces of symmetric stable processes on Lipschitz domains

It is shown that the second term in the asymptotic expansion as $t\to 0$ of the trace of the semigroup of symmetric stable processes (fractional powers of the Laplacian) of order $α$, for any $0<α<2$, in Lipschitz domains is given by the surface area of the boundary of the domain. This brings the asymptotics for the trace of stable processes in domains of Euclidean space on par with those of Brownian motion (the Laplacian), as far as boundary smoothness is concerned.

Trace Estimates for Stable Processes

In this paper we study the behaviour in time of the trace (the partition function) of the heat semigroup associated with symmetric stable processes in domains of $\Rd$. In particular, we show that for domains with the so called {\it{$R$-smoothness}} property the second terms in the asymptotic as $t\to 0$ involves the surface area of the domain, just as in the case of Brownian motion.

Estimates and structure of $α$-harmonic functions

We prove a uniform boundary Harnack inequality for nonnegative harmonic functions of the fractional Laplacian on arbitrary open set $D$. This yields a unique representation of such functions as integrals against measures on $D^c\cup \{\infty\}$ satisfying an integrability condition. The corresponding Martin boundary of $D$ is a subset of the Euclidean boundary determined by an integral test.

Spectral gap for stable process on convex planar double symmetric domains

We study the semigroup of the symmetric $α$-stable process in bounded domains in $\R^2$. We obtain a variational formula for the spectral gap, i.e. the difference between two first eigenvalues of the generator of this semigroup. This variational formula allows us to obtain lower bound estimates of the spectral gap for convex planar domains which are symmetric with respect to both coordinate axes. For rectangles, using "midconcavity" of the first eigenfunction, we obtain sharp upper and lower bound estimates of the spectral gap.

Eigenvalue gaps for the Cauchy process and a Poincaré inequality

A connection between the semigroup of the Cauchy process killed upon exiting a domain $D$ and a mixed boundary value problem for the Laplacian in one dimension higher known as the "mixed Steklov problem," was established in a previous paper of the authors. From this, a variational characterization for the eigenvalues $λ_n$, $n\geq 1$, of the Cauchy process in $D$ was obtained. In this paper we obtain a variational characterization of the difference between $λ_n$ and $λ_1$. We study bounded convex domains which are symmetric with respect to one of the coordinate axis and obtain lower bound estimates for $λ_* - λ_1$ where $λ_*$ is the eigenvalue corresponding to the "first" antisymmetric eigenfunction for $D$. The proof is based on a variational characterization of $λ_* - λ_1$ and on a weighted Poincaré--type inequality. The Poincaré inequality is valid for all $α$ symmetric stable processes, $0<α\leq 2$, and any other process obtained from Brownian motion by subordination. We also prove upper bound estimates for the spectral gap $λ_2-λ_1$ in bounded convex domains.

On the shape of the ground state eigenfunction for stable processes

We prove that the ground state eigenfunction for symmetric stable processes of order $α\in (0, 2)$ killed upon leaving the interval $(-1, 1)$ is concave on $(-{1/2}, {1/2})$. We call this property "mid--concavity." A similar statement holds for rectangles in $\R^d$, $d>1$. These result follow from similar results for finite dimensional distributions of Brownian motion and subordination.
