Unsupervised Neural Machine Translation for Low-Resource Domains via Meta-Learning

Unsupervised machine translation, which utilizes unpaired monolingual corpora as training data, has achieved comparable performance against supervised machine translation. However, it still suffers from data-scarce domains. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel meta-learning algorithm for unsupervised neural machine translation (UNMT) that trains the model to adapt to another domain by utilizing only a small amount of training data. We assume that domain-general knowledge is a significant factor in handling data-scarce domains. Hence, we extend the meta-learning algorithm, which utilizes knowledge learned from high-resource domains, to boost the performance of low-resource UNMT. Our model surpasses a transfer learning-based approach by up to 2-4 BLEU scores. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is pertinent for fast adaptation and consistently outperforms other baseline models.

Knot reversal acts non-trivially on the concordance group of topologically slice knots

We construct an infinite family of topologically slice knots that are not smoothly concordant to their reverses. More precisely, if T denotes the concordance group of topologically slice knots and R is the involution of T induced by string reversal, then T/Fix(R) contains an infinitely generated free subgroup. The result remains true modulo the subgroup of T generated by knots with trivial Alexander polynomial.

One-bipolar topologically slice knots and primary decomposition

Let {T_n} be the bipolar filtration of the smooth concordance group of topologically slice knots, which was introduced by Cochran, Harvey, and Horn. It is known that for each n not equal to 1 the quotient group T_n/T_{n+1} has infinite rank and T_1/T_2 has positive rank. In this paper, we show that T_1/T_2 also has infinite rank. Moreover, we prove that there exist infinitely many Alexander polynomials p(t) such that there exist infinitely many knots in T_1 with Alexander polynomial p(t) whose nontrivial linear combinations are not concordant to any knot with Alexander polynomial coprime to p(t), even modulo T_2. This extends the recent result of Cha on the primary decomposition of T_n/T_{n+1} for all n greater than 1 to the case n=1. To prove our theorem, we show that the surgery manifolds of satellite links of $ν^+$-equivalent knots with the same pattern link have the same Ozsváth-Szabó $d$-invariants, which is of independent interest. As another application, for each g greater than 0, we give a topologically slice knot of concordance genus g that is $ν^+$-equivalent to the unknot.

Primary decomposition of knot concordance and von Neumann rho-invariants

We address the primary decomposition of the knot concordance group in terms of the solvable filtration and higher-order von Neumann $ρ$-invariants by Cochran, Orr, and Teichner. We show that for a nonnegative integer n, if the connected sum of two n-solvable knots with coprime Alexander polynomials is slice, then each of the knots has vanishing von Neumann $ρ$-invariants of order n. This gives positive evidence for the conjecture that nonslice knots with coprime Alexander polynomials are not concordant. As an application, we show that if K is one of Cochran-Orr-Teichner's knots which are the first examples of nonslice knots with vanishing Casson-Gordon invariants, then K is not concordant to any knot with Alexander polynomial coprime to that of K.

Knots having the same Seifert form and primary decomposition of knot concordance

We show that for each Seifert form of an algebraically slice knot with nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exists an infinite family of knots having the Seifert form such that the knots are linearly independent in the knot concordance group and not concordant to any knot with coprime Alexander polynomial. Key ingredients for the proof are Cheeger-Gromov-von Neumann rho-invariants for amenable groups developed by Cha and Orr and polynomial splittings of metabelian rho-invariants.

Amenable signatures, algebraic solutions, and filtrations of the knot concordance group

It is known that each of the successive quotient groups of the grope and solvable filtrations of the knot concordance group has an infinite rank subgroup. The generating knots of these subgroups are constructed using iterated doubling operators. In this paper, for each of the successive quotients of the filtrations we give a new infinite rank subgroup which trivially intersects the previously known infinite rank subgroups. Instead of iterated doubling operators, the generating knots of these new subgroups are constructed using the notion of algebraic $n$-solutions, which was introduced by Cochran and Teichner. Moreover, for each slice knot $K$ whose Alexander polynomial has degree greater than 2, we construct the generating knots such that they have the same derived quotients and higher-order Alexander invariants up to a certain order. In the proof, we use an $L^2$-theoretic obstruction for a knot to being $n.5$-solvable given by Cha, which is based on $L^2$-theoretic techniques developed by Cha and Orr. We also generalize the notion of algebraic $n$-solutions to the notion of $R$-algebraic $n$-solutions where $R$ is either rationals or the field of $p$ elements for a prime $p$.

Unknotted gropes, Whitney towers, and doubly slicing knots

We study the structure of the exteriors of gropes and Whitney towers in dimension 4, focusing on their fundamental groups. In particular we introduce a notion of unknottedness of gropes and Whitney towers in the 4-sphere. We prove that various modifications of gropes and Whitney towers preserve the unknottedness and do not enlarge the fundamental group. We exhibit handlebody structures of the exteriors of gropes and Whitney towers constructed by earlier methods of Cochran, Teichner, Horn, and the first author, and use them to construct examples of unknotted gropes and Whitney towers. As an application, we introduce geometric bi-filtrations of knots which approximate the double sliceness in terms of unknotted gropes and Whitney towers. We prove that the bi-filtrations do not stabilize at any stage.

Polynomial splittings of correction terms and doubly slice knots

We show that if the connected sum of two knots with coprime Alexander polynomials is doubly slice, then the Ozsváth-Szabó correction terms as smooth double sliceness obstructions vanish for both knots. Recently, Jeffrey Meier gave smoothly slice knots that are topologically doubly slice, but not smoothly doubly slice. As an application, we give a new example of such knots that is distinct from Meier's knots modulo doubly slice knots.

Splittings of von Neumann rho-invariants of knots

We give a sufficient condition under which vanishing property of Cochran-Orr-Teichner knot concordance obstructions splits under connected sum. The condition is described in terms of self-annihilating submodules with respect to higher-order Blanchfield linking forms. This extends results of Levine and the authors on distinguishing knots with coprime Alexander polynomials up to concordance. As an application, we show that the knots constructed by Cochran, Orr and Teichner as the first examples of nonslice knots with vanishing Casson-Gordon invariants are not concordant to any knot of genus one.

Twisted Alexander polynomials on curves in character varieties of knot groups

For a fibered knot in the 3-sphere the twisted Alexander polynomial associated to an SL(2,C)-character is known to be monic. It is conjectured that for a nonfibered knot there is a curve component of the SL(2,C)-character variety containing only finitely many characters whose twisted Alexander polynomials are monic, i.e. finiteness of such characters detects fiberedness of knots. In this paper we discuss the existence of a certain curve component which relates to the conjecture when knots have nonmonic Alexander polynomials. We also discuss the similar problem of detecting the knot genus.

Poincaré duality and degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials

We prove duality theorems for twisted Reidemeister torsions and twisted Alexander polynomials generalizing the results of Turaev. As a corollary we determine the parity of the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials of 3-manifolds in many cases.

Smooth concordance of links topologically concordant to the Hopf link

It was shown by Jim Davis that a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one is topologically concordant to the Hopf link. In this paper, we show that there is a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one that has unknotted components and is not smoothly concordant to the Hopf link, answering a question of Jim Davis. We construct infinitely many concordance classes of such links, and show that they have the stronger property of not being smoothly concordant to the Hopf link with knots tied in the components.

Twisted Alexander polynomials and character varieties of 2-bridge knot groups

We study the twisted Alexander polynomial from the viewpoint of the SL(2,C)-character variety of nonabelian representations of a knot group. It is known that if a knot is fibered, then the twisted Alexander polynomials associated with nonabelian SL(2,C)-representations are all monic. In this paper, we show that the converse holds for 2-bridge knots. Furthermore we show that for a 2-bridge knot there exists a curve component in the SL(2,C)-character variety such that if the knot is not fibered then there are only finitely many characters in the component for which the associated twisted Alexander polynomials are monic. We also show that for a 2-bridge knot of genus g, in the above curve component for all but finitely many characters the associated twisted Alexander polynomials have degree 4g-2.

The cobordism group of homology cylinders

Garoufalidis and Levine introduced the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders over a surface. This group can be regarded as a generalization of the mapping class group. Using torsion invariants, we show that the abelianization of this group is infinitely generated provided that the first Betti number of the surface is positive. In particular, this shows that the group is not perfect. This answers questions of Garoufalidis-Levine and Goda-Sakasai. Furthermore we show that the abelianization of the group has infinite rank for the case that the surface has more than one boundary component. These results hold for the homology cylinder analogue of the Torelli group as well.

Covering link calculus and iterated Bing doubles

We give a new geometric obstruction to the iterated Bing double of a knot being a slice link: for n>1 the (n+1)-st iterated Bing double of a knot is rationally slice if and only if the n-th iterated Bing double of the knot is rationally slice. The main technique of the proof is a covering link construction simplifying a given link. We prove certain similar geometric obstructions for n <= 1 as well. Our results are sharp enough to conclude, when combined with algebraic invariants, that if the n-th iterated Bing double of a knot is slice for some n, then the knot is algebraically slice. Also our geometric arguments applied to the smooth case show that the Ozsvath-Szabo and Manolescu-Owens invariants give obstructions to iterated Bing doubles being slice. These results generalize recent results of Harvey, Teichner, Cimasoni, Cha and Cha-Livingston-Ruberman. As another application, we give explicit examples of algebraically slice knots with non-slice iterated Bing doubles by considering von Neumann rho-invariants and rational knot concordance. Refined versions of such examples are given, that take into account the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration.

Thurston norm, fibered manifolds and twisted Alexander polynomials

Every element in the first cohomology group of a 3--manifold is dual to embedded surfaces. The Thurston norm measures the minimal `complexity' of such surfaces. For instance the Thurston norm of a knot complement determines the genus of the knot in the 3--sphere. We show that the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials give lower bounds on the Thurston norm, generalizing work of McMullen and Turaev. Our bounds attain their most concise form when interpreted as the degrees of the Reidemeister torsion of a certain twisted chain complex. We show that these lower bounds give the correct genus bounds for all knots with 12 crossings or less, including the Conway knot and the Kinoshita--Terasaka knot which have trivial Alexander polynomial.
