The Seoul National University AGN monitoring project. II. BLR size and black hole mass of two AGNs

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a correlation between the size of the broad line region (BLR) and the monochromatic continuum luminosity at 5100 Å, allowing black hole mass estimation based on single-epoch spectra. However, the validity of the correlation is yet to be clearly tested for high-luminosity AGNs. We present the first reverberation-mapping results of the Seoul National University AGN monitoring program (SAMP), which is designed to focus on luminous AGNs for probing the high end of the size-luminosity relation. We report time lag measurements of two AGNs, namely, 2MASS J10261389+5237510 and SDSS J161911.24+501109.2, using the light curves obtained over a $\sim$1000 day period with an average cadence of $\sim$10 and $\sim$20 days, respectively for photometry and spectroscopy monitoring. Based on a cross-correlation analysis and H$β$ line width measurements, we determine the H$β$ lag as $41.8^{+4.9}_{-6.0}$ and $52.6^{+17.6}_{-14.7}$ days in the observed-frame, and black hole mass as $3.65^{+0.49}_{-0.57} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ and $23.02^{+7.81}_{-6.56} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$, respectively for 2MASS J1026 and SDSS J1619.

Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG)

Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG) is a high cadence observation program monitoring nearby galaxies with high probabilities of hosting supernovae (SNe). IMSNG aims to constrain the SN explosion mechanism by inferring sizes of SN progenitor systems through the detection of the shock-heated emission that lasts less than a few days after the SN explosion. To catch the signal, IMSNG utilizes a network of 0.5-m to 1-m class telescopes around the world and monitors the images of 60 nearby galaxies at distances D < 50 Mpc to a cadence as short as a few hours. The target galaxies are bright in near-ultraviolet (NUV) with M_NUV < -18.4 AB mag and have high probabilities of hosting SNe (0.06 SN/yr per galaxy). With this strategy, we expect to detect the early light curves of 3.4 SNe per year to a depth of R ~ 19.5 mag, enabling us to detect the shock-heated emission from a progenitor star with a radius as small as 0.1 R_sun. The accumulated data will be also useful for studying faint features around the target galaxies and other science projects. So far, 18 SNe have occurred in our target fields (16 in IMSNG galaxies) over 5 years, confirming our SN rate estimate of 0.06 SN/yr per galaxy.

Optical excitation and detection of neuronal activity

Optogenetics has emerged as an exciting tool for manipulating neural activity, which in turn, can modulate behavior in live organisms. However, detecting the response to the optical stimulation requires electrophysiology with physical contact or fluorescent imaging at target locations, which is often limited by photobleaching and phototoxicity. In this paper, we show that phase imaging can report the intracellular transport induced by optogenetic stimulation. We developed a multimodal instrument that can both stimulate cells with high spatial resolution and detect optical pathlength changes with nanometer scale sensitivity. We found that optical pathlength fluctuations following stimulation are consistent with active organelle transport. Furthermore, the results indicate a broadening in the transport velocity distribution, which is significantly higher in stimulated cells compared to optogenetically inactive cells. It is likely that this label-free, contactless measurement of optogenetic response will provide an enabling approach to neuroscience.
