Lower bound on the blow-up rate of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations

Consider axisymmetric strong solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^3$ with non-trivial swirl. Such solutions are not known to be globally defined, but it is shown in \cite{MR673830} that they could only blow up on the axis of symmetry. Let $z$ denote the axis of symmetry and $r$ measure the distance to the z-axis. Suppose the solution satisfies the pointwise scale invariant bound $|v (x,t)| \le C_*{(r^2 -t)^{-1/2}} $ for $-T_0\le t < 0$ and $0<C_*<\infty$ allowed to be large, we then prove that $v$ is regular at time zero.

Spectra of Linearized Operators for NLS Solitary Waves

Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with focusing power nonlinearities have solitary wave solutions. The spectra of the linearized operators around these solitary waves are intimately connected to stability properties of the solitary waves, and to the long-time dynamics of solutions of (NLS). We study these spectra in detail, both analytically and numerically.

Asymptotic stability of harmonic maps under the Schrödinger flow

For Schrödinger maps from $\R^2\times\R^+$ to the 2-sphere $§^2$, it is not known if finite energy solutions can form singularities (``blowup'') in finite time. We consider equivariant solutions with energy near the energy of the two-parameter family of equivariant harmonic maps. We prove that if the topological degree of the map is at least four, blowup does {\it not} occur, and global solutions converge (in a dispersive sense -- i.e. scatter) to a fixed harmonic map as time tends to infinity. The proof uses, among other things, a time-dependent splitting of the solution, the ``generalized Hasimoto transform", and Strichartz (dispersive) estimates for a certain two space-dimensional linear Schrödinger equation whose potential has critical power spatial singularity and decay. Along the way, we establish an energy-space local well-posedness result for which the existence time is determined by the length-scale of a nearby harmonic map.

Interior regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

We present new interior regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations: a suitable weak solution is regular near an interior point $z$ if either the scaled $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the velocity with $3/p+2/q\leq 2$, $1\leq q\leq \infty$, or the $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the vorticity with $3/p+2/q\leq 3$, $1 \leq q < \infty$, or the $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the gradient of the vorticity with $3/p+2/q\leq 4$, $1 \leq q$, $1 \leq p$, is sufficiently small near $z$.

Regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations near the boundary

We present some new regularity criteria for ``suitable weak solutions'' of the Navier-Stokes equations near the boundary in dimension three. We prove that suitable weak solutions are Hölder continuous up to the boundary provided that the scaled mixed norm $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$ with $3/p+2/q\leq 2, 2<q\le \infty$, $(p,q) \not = (3/2,\infty)$, is small near the boundary. Our methods yield new results in the interior case as well. Partial regularity of weak solutions is also analyzed under some conditions of the Prodi-Serrin type.

Classification of Asymptotic Profiles for Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with Small Initial Data

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a bounded local potential in $R^3$. The linear Hamiltonian is assumed to have two bound states with the eigenvalues satisfying some resonance condition. Suppose that the initial data are localized and small in $H^1$. We prove that exactly three local-in-space behaviors can occur as the time tends to infinity: 1. The solutions vanish; 2. The solutions converge to nonlinear ground states; 3. The solutions converge to nonlinear excited states. We also obtain upper bounds for the relaxation in all three cases. In addition, a matching lower bound for the relaxation to nonlinear ground states was given for a large set of initial data which is believed to be generic. Our proof is based on outgoing estimates of the dispersive waves which measure the relevant time-direction dependent information of the dispersive wave. These estimates, introduced in [16], provides the first general notion to measure the out-going tendency of waves in the setting of nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Asymptotic Stability and Completeness in the Energy Space for Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with Small Solitary Waves

In this paper we study a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations which admit families of small solitary wave solutions. We consider solutions which are small in the energy space $H^1$, and decompose them into solitary wave and dispersive wave components. The goal is to establish the asymptotic stability of the solitary wave and the asymptotic completeness of the dispersive wave. That is, we show that as $t \to \infty$, the solitary wave component converges to a fixed solitary wave, and the dispersive component converges to a solution of the free Schrödinger equation.

Asymptotic Dynamics of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with Many Bound States

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a bounded local potential in $R^3$. The linear Hamiltonian is assumed to have three or more bound states with the eigenvalues satisfying some resonance conditions. Suppose that the initial data is localized and small of order $n$ in $H^1$, and that its ground state component is larger than $n^{3-ε}$ with $ε>0$ small. We prove that the solution will converge locally to a nonlinear ground state as the time tends to infinity.

Stable Directions for Excited States of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\R^3$. Assume that the linear Hamiltonians have two bound states. For certain finite codimension subset in the space of initial data, we construct solutions converging to the excited states in both non-resonant and resonant cases. In the resonant case, the linearized operators around the excited states are non-self adjoint perturbations to some linear Hamiltonians with embedded eigenvalues. Although self-adjoint perturbation turns embedded eigenvalues into resonances, this class of non-self adjoint perturbations turn an embedded eigenvalue into two eigenvalues with the distance to the continuous spectrum given to the leading order by the Fermi golden rule.

Stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space of the sum of N solitons for subcritical gKdV equations

We prove in this paper the stability and asymptotic stability in H^1 of a decoupled sum of N solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations $u_t+(u_{xx}+u^p)_x=0$ (1<p<5). The proof of the stability result is based on energy arguments and monotonicity of local L^2 norm. Note that the result is new even for p=2 (the KdV equation). The asymptotic stability result then follows directly from a rigidity theorem in [15].

Relaxation of Excited States in Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\R^3$ with a bounded local potential. The linear Hamiltonian is assumed to have two bound states with the eigenvalues satisfying some resonance condition. Suppose that the initial data is small and is near some nonlinear {\it excited} state. We give a sufficient condition on the initial data so that the solution to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation approaches to certain nonlinear {\it ground} state as the time tends to infinity.

Asymptotic Dynamics of Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations: Resonance Dominated and Radiation Dominated Solutions

We consider a linear Schrödinger equation with a small nonlinear perturbation in $R^3$. Assume that the linear Hamiltonian has exactly two bound states and its eigenvalues satisfy some resonance condition. We prove that if the initial data is near a nonlinear ground state, then the solution approaches to certain nonlinear ground state as the time tends to infinity. Furthermore, the difference between the wave function solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its asymptotic profile can have two different types of decay: 1. The resonance dominated solutions decay as $t^{-1/2}$. 2. The radiation dominated solutions decay at least like $t^{-3/2}$.
