Anti-Instability of Complex Ghost

We argue that Lee-Wick's complex ghost appearing in any higher derivative theory is stable and its asymptotic field exists. It may be more appropriate to call it ``anti-unstable" in the sense that, the more the ghost `decays' into lighter ordinary particles, the larger the probability the ghost remains as itself becomes. This is explicitly shown by analyzing the two-point functions of the ghost Heisenberg field which is obtained as an exact result in the $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit in a massive scalar ghost theory with light $O(N)$-vector scalar matter. The anti-instability is a consequence of the fact that the poles of the complex ghost propagator are located on the physical sheet in the complex plane of four-momentum squared. This should be contrasted to the case of the ordinary unstable particle, whose propagator has no pole on the physical sheet.

Unitarity Violation in Field Theories of Lee-Wick's Complex Ghost

Theories with fourth-order derivatives, including the Lee-Wick finite QED model and Quadratic Gravity, have a better UV behaviour, but the presence of negative metric ghost modes endanger unitarity. Noticing that the ghost acquires a complex mass by radiative corrections, Lee and Wick, in particular, claimed that such complex ghosts would never be created by collisions of physical particles because of energy conservation, so that the physical S-matrix unitarity must hold. We investigate the unitarity problem faithfully working in the operator formalism of quantum field theory. When complex ghosts participate, a complex delta function (generalization of Dirac delta function) appears at each interaction vertex, which enforces a specific conservation law of complex energy. Its particular property implies that the naive Feynman rule is wrong if the four-momenta are assigned to the internal lines after taking account of the conservation law in advance. We show that the complex ghosts are actually created and unitarity is violated in such fourth-order derivative theories. We also find a definite energy threshold below which the ghosts cannot be created: The theories are unitary and renormalizable below the threshold.

Covariant BRST Quantization of Unimodular Gravity II -- Formulation with a vector antighost --

In our previous paper, we have presented a covariant BRST quantization of unimodular gravity which may account for the smallness of the cosmological constant, and have shown that the physical degrees of freedom in the theory are the same as general relativity. The formulation has been given by using rank-2 antisymmetric tensor fields for both ghosts and antighosts. Here we give an alternative formulation using a vector field for the antighost but keeping the same structure for the ghosts. This gives a significantly simpler covariant quantization with less ghosts and no tripole modes in the ghost sector. We show that this also gives only two physical transverse modes as in general relativity.

Covariant BRST Quantization of Unimodular Gravity I -- Formulation with antisymmetric tensor ghosts --

Unimodular gravity (UG) is an interesting theory that may explain why the cosmological constant is extremely small, in contrast to general relativity (GR). The theory has only the transverse diffeomorphism invariance and this causes lots of debate as to the equivalence of UG to GR in the covariant quantization. We study the covariant BRST quantization of UG by gauge fixing only the transverse diffeomorphism and show that the remaining physical degrees of freedom are two, the same number as GR. This is achieved by using antisymmetric tensor ghost fields which automatically satisfy the transverse condition without nonlocal projection operator. The theory exhibits the ghosts for ghosts phenomenon, which requires further gauge fixing and introduction of more ghosts. We identify the BRST quartet structure among the various fields and single out the remaining physical degrees of freedom.

BRST Quantization of General Relativity in Unimodular Gauge and Unimodular Gravity

Unimodular gravity (UG) is an important theory which may explain the smallness of the cosmological constant. To get insight into the covariant quantization of UG, we discuss the BRST quantization of General Relativity (GR) with a cosmological constant in the unimodular gauge. We develop a novel way to gauge fix the transverse diffeomorphism (TDiff) and then further to fulfill the unimodular gauge. This process requires the introduction of an additional pair of BRST doublets which decouple from the physical sector together with the other three pairs of BRST doublets for the TDiff. We show that the physical spectrum is the same as GR in the usual covariant gauge fixing. We then study a theory derived by making "Fourier transform" of GR in the unimodular gauge with respect to the cosmological constant as a candidate of "quantum UG." We clarify the difference from GR and point out problems in this theory.

Noether Currents and Maxwell-type Equations of Motion in Higher Derivative Gravity Theories

In general coordinate invariant gravity theories whose Lagrangians contain arbitrarily high order derivative fields, the Noether currents for the global translation and for the Nakanishi's IOSp(8|8) choral symmetry containing the BRS symmetry as its member, are constructed. We generally show that for each of those Noether currents a suitable linear combination of equations of motion can be brought into the form of Maxwell-type field equation possessing the Noether current as its source term.

Necessity and Insufficiency of Scale Invariance for solving Cosmological Constant Problem

A scenario based on the scale invariance for explaining the vanishing cosmological constant (CC) is discussed. I begin with a notice on the miraculous fact of the CC problem that the vacuum energies totally vanish at each step of hierarchical and successive spontaneous symmetry breakings. I then argue that the classical scale invariance is a necessary condition for the calculability of the vacuum energy. Next, I discuss how sufficient the scale invariance is for solving the CC problem. First in the framework of classical field theory, the scale invariance is shown to give a natural mechanism for realizing the miracle of vanishing vacuum energies at every step of spontaneous symmetry breakings. Then adopting Englert-Truffin-Gastmans' prescription to maintain the scale invariance in quantum field theory, I point out that the quantum scale invariance alone is not yet sufficient to avoid the superfine tuning of coupling constants for realizing vanishingly small cosmological constant, whereas the hierarchy problem may be solved. Another symmetry or a mechanism is still necessary which protects the flat direction of the potential against the radiative corrections.

Dynamical Breaking to Special or Regular Subgroups in $SO(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

It is recently shown that in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type models, the $SU(N)$ symmetry breaking into its special subgroups is not special but much more common than that into the regular subgroups, where the fermions belong to complex representations of $SU(N)$. We perform the same analysis for $SO(N)$ NJL model for various $N$ with fermions belonging to an irreducible spinor representation of $SO(N)$. We find that the symmetry breaking into special or regular subgroups has some correlation with the type of fermion representations; i.e., complex, real, pseudo-real representations.

Is Symmetry Breaking into Special Subgroup Special?

The purpose of this paper is to show that the symmetry breaking into special subgroups is not special at all, contrary to the usual wisdom. To demonstrate this explicitly, we examine dynamical symmetry breaking pattern in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type models in which the fermion matter belongs to an irreducible representation of $SU(N)$. The potential analysis shows that for almost all cases at the potential minimum the $SU(N)$ group symmetry is broken to its special subgroups such as $SO(N)$ or $USp(N)$ when symmetry breaking occurs.

Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking, Negative Metric and Vacuum Energy

The supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model proposed by Cheng, Dai, Faisel and Kong is re-analyzed by using an auxiliary superfield method in which a hidden local U(1) symmetry emerges. It is shown that, in the healthy field-space region where no negative metric particles appear, only SUSY preserving vacua can be realized in the weak coupling regime and a composite massive spin-1 supermultiplets appear as a result of spontaneous breaking of the hidden local U(1) symmetry. In the strong coupling regime, on the other hand, SUSY is dynamically broken, but it is always accompanied by negative metric particles.

Superspace Gauge Fixing in Yang-Mills Matter Coupled Conformal Supergravity

In $D=4$, $\cal{N}=1$ conformal superspace, the Yang-Mills matter coupled supergravity system is constructed where the Yang-Mills gauge interaction is introduced by extending the superconformal group to include the Kähler isometry group of chiral matter fields. There are two gauge-fixing procedures to get to the component Poincaré supergravity: one via the superconformal component formalism and the other via the Poincaré superspace formalism. These two types of superconformal gauge-fixing conditions are analyzed in detail and their correspondence is clarified.

Component versus Superspace Approaches to D=4, N=1 Conformal Supergravity

The superspace formulation of N=1 conformal supergravity in four dimensions is demonstrated to be equivalent to the conventional component field approach based on the superconformal tensor calculus. The detailed correspondence between two approaches is explicitly given for various quantities; superconformal gauge fields, curvatures and curvature constraints, general conformal multiplets and their transformation laws, and so on. In particular, we carefully analyze the curvature constraints leading to the superconformal algebra and also the superconformal gauge fixing leading to Poincare supergravity since they look rather different between two approaches.

Covariant Approach to the No-ghost Theorem in Massive Gravity

We discuss the no-ghost theorem in the massive gravity in a covariant manner. Using the BRST formalism and Stückelberg fields, we first clarify how the Boulware-Deser ghost decouples in the massive gravity theory with Fierz-Pauli mass term. Here we find that the crucial point in the proof is that there is no higher (time) derivative for the Stückelberg `scalar' field. We then analyze the nonlinear massive gravity proposed by de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley, and show that there is no ghost for general admissible backgrounds. In this process, we find a very nontrivial decoupling limit for general backgrounds. We end the paper by demonstrating the general results explicitly in a nontrivial example where there apparently appear higher time derivatives for Stückelberg scalar field, but show that this does not introduce the ghost into the theory.

Gauge Fixing of Modified Cubic Open Superstring Field Theory

The gauge-fixing problem of modified cubic open superstring field theory is discussed in detail both for the Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz sectors in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) framework. We prove for the first time that the same form of action as the classical gauge-invariant one with the ghost-number constraint on the string field relaxed gives the master action satisfying the BV master equation. This is achieved by identifying independent component fields based on the analysis of the kernel structure of the inverse picture changing operator. The explicit gauge-fixing conditions for the component fields are discussed. In a kind of $b_0=0$ gauge, we explicitly obtain the NS propagator which has poles at the zeros of the Virasoro operator $L_0$.

Coupling Supersymmetric Nonlinear Sigma Models to Supergravity

It is known that supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models for the compact Kahler manifolds G/H cannot be consistently coupled to supergravity, since the Kahler potentials are not invariant under the G transformation. We show that the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models can be deformed such that the Kahler potential be exactly G-invariant if and only if one enlarges the manifolds by dropping all the U(1)'s in the unbroken subgroup H. Then, those nonlinear sigma models can be coupled to supergravity without losing the G invariance.

The footprint of E7 in amplitudes of N=8 supergravity

We study the low energy theorems associated with the non-linearly realized continuous E7 symmetry of the on-shell N=8 supergravity. For Nambu-Goldstone bosons we evaluate the one-soft-scalar-bosonemission amplitudes by computing the E7 current matrix element on the one-particle external lines. We use the explicit form of the conserved E7 Noether current and prove that all such matrix elements vanish in the soft momentum limit, assuming the SU(8) symmetry of the S-matrix.This implies that all tree amplitudes vanish in the one-soft-boson limit. We also discuss the implications of unbroken E7 symmetry for higher-order amplitudes.

Electric Dipole Moments of Dyon and `Electron'

The electric and magnetic dipole moments of dyon fermions are calculated within N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory including the theta-term. It is found, in particular, that the gyroelectric ratio deviates from the canonical value of 2 for the monopole fermion (n_m=1,n_e=0) in the case theta\not=0. Then, applying the S-duality transformation to the result for the dyon fermions, we obtain an explicit prediction for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the charged fermion (`electron'). It is thus seen that the approach presented here provides a novel method for computing the EDM induced by the theta-term.
