Right-handed Neutrinos in F-theory Compactifications

F-theory is one of the frameworks where up-type Yukawa couplings of SU(5) unified theories are naturally generated. As charged matter fields have localized zero modes in F-theory, a study of flavor structure could be easier in F-theory than in Heterotic string theory. In a study of flavor structure in the lepton sector, however, an important role is played by right-handed neutrinos, which are not charged under the SU(5) unified gauge group. It is therefore solicited to find out what right-handed neutrinos are in F-theory compactifications and how their Majorana mass terms are generated together with developing a theoretical framework where effective Yukawa couplings involving both SU(5)-neutral and charged fields can be calculated. We find that the complex structure moduli chiral multiplets of F-theory compactifications are good candidates to be right-handed neutrinos, and that their Majorana masses are automatically generated in flux compactifications. The mass scale is predicted to be somewhat below the GUT scale, which is in nice agreement with the Delta m^2 of the atmospheric neutrino oscillation through the see-saw mechanism. We also discuss various scenarios of solving the dimension-4 proton decay problem in supersymmetric F-theory compactifications, along with considering the consequences of those scenarios in the nature of right-handed neutrinos.

Codimension-3 Singularities and Yukawa Couplings in F-theory

F-theory is one of the frameworks where all the Yukawa couplings of grand unified theories are generated and their computation is possible. The Yukawa couplings of charged matter multiplets are supposed to be generated around codimension-3 singularity points of a base complex 3-fold, and that has been confirmed for the simplest type of codimension-3 singularities in recent studies. However, the geometry of F-theory compactifications is much more complicated. For a generic F-theory compactification, such issues as flux configuration around the codimension-3 singularities, field-theory formulation of the local geometry and behavior of zero-mode wavefunctions have virtually never been addressed before. We address all these issues in this article, and further discuss nature of Yukawa couplings generated at such singularities. In order to calculate the Yukawa couplings of low-energy effective theory, however, the local descriptions of wavefunctions on complex surfaces and a global characterization of zero-modes over a complex curve have to be combined together. We found the relation between them by re-examining how chiral charged matters are characterized in F-theory compactification. An intrinsic definition of spectral surfaces in F-theory turns out to be the key concept. As a biproduct, we found a new way to understand the Heterotic--F theory duality, which improves the precision of existing duality map associated with codimension-3 singularities.

Neutrino mixing and mass hierarchy in Gaussian landscapes

The flavor structure of the Standard Model may arise from random selection on a landscape. In a class of simple models, called "Gaussian landscapes," Yukawa couplings derive from overlap integrals of Gaussian zero-mode wavefunctions on an extra-dimensional space. Statistics of vacua are generated by scanning the peak positions of these wavefunctions, giving probability distributions for all flavor observables. Gaussian landscapes can account for all of the major features of flavor, including both the small electroweak mixing in the quark sector and the large mixing observed in the lepton sector. We find that large lepton mixing stems directly from lepton doublets having broad wavefunctions on the internal manifold. Assuming the seesaw mechanism, we find the mass hierarchy among neutrinos is sensitive to the number of right-handed neutrinos, and can provide a good fit to neutrino oscillation measurements.

Quark and Lepton Masses from Gaussian Landscapes

The flavor structure of the Standard Model might arise from random selection on a landscape. We propose a class of simple models, ``Gaussian landscapes,'' where Yukawa couplings derive from overlap integrals of Gaussian wavefunctions on extra-dimensions. Statistics of vacua are generated by scanning the peak positions of these zero-modes, giving probability distributions for all flavor observables. Gaussian landscapes can broadly account for all observed flavor patterns with very few free parameters. For example, the generation structure in the quark sector follows from the overlap integrals for both the up and down type Yukawas sharing the localized wavefunctions of the quark doublets and the Higgs boson. Although Gaussian landscapes predict broad probability distributions, the flavor observables are correlated and we show that accounting for measured flavor parameters creates sharper distributions for future neutrino measurements.

A Theoretical Framework for R-parity Violation

We propose a theoretical framework for R-parity violation. It is realized by a class of Calabi--Yau compactification of Heterotic string theory. Trilinear R-parity violation in superpotential is either absent or negligibly small without an unbroken symmetry, due to a selection rule based on charge counting of a spontaneously broken U(1) symmetry. Although such a selection rule cannot be applied in general to non-renormalizable operators in the low-energy effective superpotential, it is valid for terms trilinear in low-energy degrees of freedom, and hence can be used as a solution to the dimension-4 proton decay problem in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Bilinear R-parity violation is generated, but there are good reasons why they are small enough to satisfy its upper bounds from neutrino mass and washout of baryon/lepton asymmetry. All R-parity violating dimension-5 operators can be generated. In this theoretical framework, nucleons can decay through squark-exchange diagrams combining dimension-5 and bilinear R-parity violating operators. B-L breaking neutron decay is predicted.

Gauge Mediation with D-term SUSY Breaking

We construct a gauge-mediation model with a D-term supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. R-symmetry breaking necessary for generating the SUSY standard-model gaugino masses is given by gaugino condensation of a strongly coupled gauge theory in the hidden sector. The energy scale of the strong dynamics of the hidden sector gauge theory should be around the messenger mass scale M, or otherwise perturbative calculations would be reliable and would lead to negative soft mass squared for squarks and sleptons. Thus, all the mass scales are controlled by a virtually single parameter, \sqrt{D}/M. This model covers a very wide range of gravitino mass, m_{3/2} \simeq 1 eV--100 TeV. Possible embeddings of the model in string theory are also discussed.

Statistical Understanding of Quark and Lepton Masses in Gaussian Landscapes

The fundamental theory of nature may allow a large landscape of vacua. Even if the theory contains a unified gauge symmetry, the 22 flavor parameters of the Standard Model, including neutrino masses, may be largely determined by the statistics of this landscape, and not by any symmetry. Then the measured values of the flavor parameters do not lead to any fundamental symmetries, but are statistical accidents; their precise values do not provide any insights into the fundamental theory, rather the overall pattern of flavor reflects the underlying landscape. We investigate whether random selection from the statistics of a simple landscape can explain the broad patterns of quark, charged lepton, and neutrino masses and mixings. We propose Gaussian landscapes as simplified models of landscapes where Yukawa couplings result from overlap integrals of zero-mode wavefunctions in higher-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. In terms of just five free parameters, such landscapes can account for all gross features of flavor, including: the hierarchy of quark and charged lepton masses; small quark mixing angles, with 13 mixing less than 12 and 23 mixing; very light Majorana neutrino masses, with the solar to atmospheric neutrino mass ratio consistent with data; distributions for leptonic 12 and 23 mixings that are peaked at large values, while the distribution for 13 mixing is peaked at low values; and order unity CP violating phases in both the quark and lepton sectors. While the statistical distributions for flavor parameters are broad, the distributions are robust to changes in the geometry of the extra dimensions. Constraining the distributions by loose cuts about observed values leads to narrower distributions for neutrino measurements of 13 mixing, CP violation, and neutrinoless double beta decay.

Landscape Predictions for the Higgs Boson and Top Quark Masses

If the Standard Model is valid up to scales near the Planck mass, and if the cosmological constant and Higgs mass parameters scan on a landscape of vacua, it is well known that the observed orders of magnitude of these quantities can be understood from environmental selection for large-scale structure and atoms. If in addition the Higgs quartic coupling scans, with a probability distribution peaked at low values, environmental selection for a phase having a scale of electroweak symmetry breaking much less than the Planck scale leads to a most probable Higgs mass of 106 GeV. While fluctuations below this are negligible, the upward fluctuation is 25/p GeV, where p measures the strength of the peaking of the a priori distribution of the quartic coupling. If the top Yukawa coupling also scans, the most probable top quark mass is predicted to lie in the range (174--178) GeV, providing the standard model is valid to at least 10^{17} GeV. The downward fluctuation is 35 GeV/ \sqrt{p}, suggesting that p is sufficiently large to give a very precise Higgs mass prediction. While a high reheat temperature after inflation could raise the most probable value of the Higgs mass to 118 GeV, maintaining the successful top prediction suggests that reheating is limited to about 10^8 GeV, and that the most probable value of the Higgs mass remains at 106 GeV. If all Yukawa couplings scan, then the e,u,d and t masses are understood to be outliers having extreme values induced by the pressures of strong environmental selection, while the s, μ, c, b, τYukawa couplings span only two orders of magnitude, reflecting an a priori distribution peaked around 10^{-3}. Extensions of these ideas allow order of magnitude predictions for neutrino masses, the baryon asymmetry and important parameters of cosmological inflation.

A Stable Proton without R-Parity--Implications for the LSP--

The proton decays too rapidly in supersymmetric theories if a dimension-4 operator \bar{5}.10.\bar{5} exists in the superpotential. The conventional idea is to impose the R-parity to kill this operator with a stable lightest supersymmetry particle (LSP) as a direct consequence. However, the SUSY-zero mechanism is also able to kill the operator without an unbroken R-parity. In this article, we provide a firm theoretical justification for the absence of the dimension-4 proton decay operator under the SUSY-zero mechanism, by using some input from string theory. The LSP may be unstable without the R-parity and, indeed, some dimension-5 R-parity violating operators may be generated in effective theories. This suggests that the dark matter is an axion in this string theory inspired model. An insight on the SUSY-zero mechanism is also obtained.

Proton Decay, Yukawa Couplings and Underlying Gauge Symmetry in String Theory

In string theory, massless particles often originate from a symmetry breaking of a large gauge symmetry G to its subgroup H. The absence of dimension-4 proton decay in supersymmetric theories suggests that (\bar{D},L) are different from \bar{H}(\bar{\bf 5}) in their origins. In this article, we consider a possibility that they come from different irreducible components in $\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{h}$. Requiring that all the Yukawa coupling constants of quarks and leptons be generated from the super Yang--Mills interactions of G, we found in the context of Georgi--Glashow H=SU(5) unification that the minimal choice of G is E_7 and E_8 is the only alternative. This idea is systematically implemented in Heterotic String, M theory and F theory, confirming the absence of dimension 4 proton decay operators. Not only H=SU(5) but also G constrain operators of effective field theories, providing non-trivial information.

Product-Group Unification in Type IIB String Thoery

The product-group unification is a model of unified theories, in which masslessness of the two Higgs doublets and absence of dimension-five proton decay are guaranteed by a symmetry. It is based on SU(5) x U(N) (N=2,3) gauge group. It is known that various features of the model are explained naturally, when it is embedded in a brane world. This article describes an idea of how to accommodate all the particles of the model in Type IIB brane world. The GUT-breaking sector is realized by a D3--D7 system, and chiral quarks and leptons arise from intersection of D7-branes. The D-brane configuration can be a geometric realization of the non-parallel family structure of quarks and leptons, an idea proposed to explain the large mixing angles observed in the neutrino oscillation. The tri-linear interaction of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model is obtained naturally in some cases.

Taming the Runaway Problem of Inflationary Landscapes

A wide variety of vacua, and their cosmological realization, may provide an explanation for the apparently anthropic choices of some parameters of particle physics and cosmology. If the probability on various parameters is weighted by volume, a flat potential for slow-roll inflation is also naturally understood, since the flatter the potential the larger the volume of the sub-universe. However, such inflationary landscapes have a serious problem, predicting an environment that makes it exponentially hard for observers to exist and giving an exponentially small probability for a moderate universe like ours. A general solution to this problem is proposed, and is illustrated in the context of inflaton decay and leptogenesis, leading to an upper bound on the reheating temperature in our sub-universe. In a particular scenario of chaotic inflation and non-thermal leptogenesis, predictions can be made for the size of CP violating phases, the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay and, in the case of theories with gauge-mediated weak scale supersymmetry, for the fundamental scale of supersymmetry breaking.

Density Perturbations and the Cosmological Constant from Inflationary Landscapes

An anthropic understanding of the cosmological constant requires that the vacuum energy at late time scans from one patch of the universe to another. If the vacuum energy during inflation also scans, the various patches of the universe acquire exponentially differing volumes. In a generic landscape with slow-roll inflation, we find that this gives a steeply varying probability distribution for the normalization of the primordial density perturbations, resulting in an exponentially small fraction of observers measuring the COBE value of 10^-5. Inflationary landscapes should avoid this "σproblem", and we explore features that can allow them to do that. One possibility is that, prior to slow-roll inflation, the probability distribution for vacua is extremely sharply peaked, selecting essentially a single anthropically allowed vacuum. Such a selection could occur in theories of eternal inflation. A second possibility is that the inflationary landscape has a special property: although scanning leads to patches with volumes that differ exponentially, the value of the density perturbation does not vary under this scanning. This second case is preferred over the first, partly because a flat inflaton potential can result from anthropic selection, and partly because the anthropic selection of a small cosmological constant is more successful.

Simultaneous Solutions of the Strong CP and Mu Problems

The μparameter of the supersymmetric standard model is replaced by λS, where S is a singlet chiral superfield, introducing a Peccei--Quinn symmetry into the theory. Dynamics at the electroweak scale naturally solves both the strong CP and μproblems as long as λis of order \sqrt{M_Z /M_pl} or smaller, and yet this theory has the same number of relevant parameters as the supersymmetric standard model. The theory will be tested at colliders: the μparameter is predicted and there are long-lived superpartners that decay to gravitinos or axinos at separated vertices. To avoid too much saxion cold dark matter, a large amount of entropy must be produced after the electroweak phase transition. If this is accomplished by decays of a massive particle, the reheat temperature should be no more than a GeV, strongly constraining baryogenesis. Cold dark matter may be composed of both axions, probed by direct detection, and saxions, probed by a soft X-ray background arising from decays to γγ. There are two known possibilities for avoiding problematic axion domain walls: the introduction of new colored fermions or the assumption that the Peccei--Quinn symmetry was already broken during inflation. In the first case, in our theory the colored particles are expected to be at the weak scale, while in the second case it implies a good chance of discovering isocurvature perturbations in the CMB radiation and a relatively low Hubble parameter during inflation.

Supergravity Analysis of Hybrid Inflation Model from D3--D7 System

The slow-roll inflation is a beautiful paradigm, yet the inflaton potential can hardly be sufficiently flat when unknown gravitational effects are taken into account. However, the hybrid inflation models constructed in D = 4 N = 1 supergravity can be consistent with N = 2 supersymmetry, and can be naturally embedded into string theory. This article discusses the gravitational effects carefully in the string model, using D = 4 supergravity description. We adopt the D3--D7 system of Type IIB string theory compactified on K3 x T^2/Z_2 orientifold for definiteness. It turns out that the slow-roll parameter can be sufficiently small despite the non-minimal Kahler potential of the model. The conditions for this to happen are clarified in terms of string vacua. We also find that the geometry obtained by blowing up singularity, which is necessary for the positive vacuum energy, is stabilized by introducing certain 3-form fluxes.

Electroweak Supersymmetry with an Approximate U(1)_PQ

A predictive framework for supersymmetry at the TeV scale is presented, which incorporates the Ciafaloni-Pomarol mechanism for the dynamical determination of the μparameter of the MSSM. It is replaced by (λS), where S is a singlet field, and the axion becomes a heavy pseudoscalar, G, by adding a mass, m_G, by hand. The explicit breaking of Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is assumed to be sufficiently weak at the TeV scale that the only observable consequence is the mass m_G. Three models for the explicit PQ breaking are given; but the utility of this framework is that the predictions for all physics at the electroweak scale are independent of the particular model for PQ breaking. Our framework leads to a theory similar to the MSSM, except that μis predicted by the Ciafaloni-Pomarol relation, and there are light, weakly-coupled states in the spectrum. The production and cascade decay of superpartners at colliders occurs as in the MSSM, except that there is one extra stage of the cascade chain, with the next-to-LSP decaying to its "superpartner" and \tilde{s}, dramatically altering the collider signatures for supersymmetry. The framework is compatible with terrestrial experiments and astrophysical observations for a wide range of m_G and . If G is as light as possible, 300 keV < m_G < 3 MeV, it can have interesting effects on the radiation energy density during the cosmological eras of nucleosynthesis and acoustic oscillation, leading to predictions for N_{νBBN} and N_{νCMB} different from 3.

GUT Phase Transition and Hybrid Inflation

The supersymmetric model of hybrid inflation is interesting not only because of its naturalness but also because of another reason. Its energy scale determined by the COBE normalization is 10^15 - 10^16 GeV. It happens to be the energy scale of interest in particle physics, namely, the mass scale of right-handed neutrinos or the energy scale of the gauge-coupling unification. It is true that topological defects are produced after the hybrid inflation if it is related to a U(1)_B-L or a GUT-symmetry breaking, and hence one cannot naively identify models of particle physics with that of inflation. But those defects are not necessarily found in modified models. We show in this article that quite a simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric hybrid inflation model is free from monopoles or cosmic strings. Moreover, it happens to be exactly the same as a well-motivated extension of SU(5)-unified theories. The vacuum energy is dominated by F-term. The η-problem is not necessarily serious when the model is realized by D-branes. Although it has been considered that a coupling constant has to be very small when the vacuum energy is dominated by F-term, this constraint is not applied either to the D-brane model. They are due to a particular form of the Kahler potential and interaction of the model. Reheating process is also discussed.

Super- and CP-symmetric QCD in Higher Dimensions

An extremely precise global symmetry is necessary in the Peccei--Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. Such symmetry arises when colored chiral fermions are localized in an internal space. We present a supersymmetric model that incorporates the above mechanism. Extra colored chiral multiplets around the supersymmetry-breaking scale are a generic prediction of the supersymetric model.
