High-field Magnetic Torque Measurements in (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$

High-field magnetic torque measurements were carried out in the spin gap system (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$. It was observed that the magnitude of the magnetic torque $τ$ is almost zero until the critical field and then increases rapidly, which indicates the existence of the magnetic quantum phase transition from the spin-gap phase to the field-induced magnetic ordered phase. From the temperature dependence of the magnetic torque $τ$, the cusp-like minimum indicative of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons was observed for $H \perp$ C-plane, while the kink-anomaly was observed for $H \perp$ A-plane at the field-induced transition temperature. It was found that this different behavior between $H \perp$ A-plane and $H \perp$ C-plane can be interpreted as the breaking of the magnon BEC picture due to the rotational symmetry breaking. The additional anomaly was also observed in the field-induced magnetic ordered phase at the intermediate angle of the applied magnetic field in the A-plane and discussed in terms of the spin-flop transition, the spin-reorientation transition and the spin-lattice correlations. In order to investigate the spin-lattice correlations in (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$, we performed the magnetostriction measurements and observed that the magnetostriction appears by vanishing of the spin gap.

Dissipation in the superconducting state of kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2

We have studied the interlayer resistivity of the prototypical quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ as a function of temperature, current and magnetic field, within the superconducting state. We find a region of non-zero resistivity whose properties are strongly dependent on magnetic field and current density. There is a crossover to non-Ohmic conduction below a temperature that coincides with the 2D vortex solid -- vortex liquid transition. We interpret the behaviour in terms of a model of current- and thermally-driven phase slips caused by the diffusive motion of the pancake vortices which are weakly-coupled in adjacent layers, giving rise to a finite interlayer resistance.

Superconducting Properties under Magnetic Field in Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}{\cdot}1.3$H$_{2}$O Single Crystal

We report the in-plane resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of the layered cobalt oxide Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}{\cdot}1.3$H$_{2}$O single crystal. The temperature dependence of the resistivity shows metallic behavior from room temperature to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 4.5 K. Sharp resistive transition, zero resistivity and almost perfect superconducting volume fraction below $T_{c}$ indicate the good quality and the bulk superconductivity of the single crystal. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and the coherence length $ξ$ are obtained from the resistive transitions in magnetic field parallel to the c-axis and the $ab$-plane. The anisotropy of $ξ$, $ξ_{ab} / ξ_{c} =$ 12 nm/1.3 nm $\simeq$ 9.2, suggests that this material is considered to be an anisotropic three dimensional superconductor. In the field parallel to the $ab$-plane, $H_{c2}$ seems to be suppressed to the value of Pauli paramagnetic limit. It may indicate the spin singlet superconductivity in the cobalt oxide.

Substitution Effect by Deuterated Donors on Superconductivity in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br

We investigate the superconductivity in the deuterated BEDT-TTF molecular substitution system $κ$-[(h8-BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$(d8-BEDT-TTF)$_x$]$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, where h8 and d8 denote fully hydrogenated and deuterated molecules, respectively. Systematic and wide range ($x$ = 0 -- 1) substitution can control chemical pressure finely near the Mott boundary, which results in the modification of the superconductivity. After cooling slowly, the increase of $T_{\textrm{c}}$ observed up to $x \sim$ 0.1 is evidently caused by the chemical pressure effect. Neither reduction of $T_{\textrm{c}}$ nor suppression of superconducting volume fraction is found below $x \sim$ 0.5. This demonstrates that the effect of disorder by substitution is negligible in the present system. With further increase of $x$, both $T_{\textrm{c}}$ and superconducting volume fraction start to decrease toward the values in $x$ = 1.

Properties of Ferromagnetic Ga1-xMnxN Films Grown by Ammonia-MBE

Using ammonia as nitrogen source for molecular beam epitaxy, the GaN-based diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga1-xMnxN is successfully grown with Mn concentration up to x~6.8% and with p-type conductivity. The films have wurtzite structure with substitutional Mn on Ga site in GaN. Magnetization measurements revealed that Ga1-xMnxN is ferromagnetic at temperatures higher than room temperature. The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature, Tc, depends on the Mn concentration of the film. At low temperatures, the magnetization increases with increasing of magnetic field, implying that a paramagnetic-like phase coexists with ferromagnetic one. Possible explanations will be proposed for the coexistence of two magnetic phases in the grown films.

Superconducting Gap Structure of kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 Probed by Thermal Conductivity Tensor

The thermal conductivity of organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 (Tc =10.4 K) has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D superconducting planes with high alignment precision. At low temperatures (T < 0.5 K), a clear fourfold symmetry in the angular variation, which is characteristic of a d-wave superconducting gap with nodes along the directions rotated 45 degrees relative to the b and c axes of the crystal, was resolved. The determined nodal structure is inconsistent with recent theoretical predictions of superconductivity induced by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation.
