Entanglement Chern number for three-dimensional topological insulators: Characterization by Weyl points of entanglement Hamiltonians

We propose characterization of the three-dimensional topological insulator by using the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian (entanglement Chern number). Here we take the extensive spin partition of the system, that pulls out the quantum entanglement between up spin and down spin of the many-body ground state. In three dimensions, the topological insulator phase is described by the section entanglement Chern number, which is the entanglement Chern number for a periodic plane in the Brillouin zone. The section entanglement Chern number serves as an interpolation of the $Z_2$ invariants defined on time-reversal invariant planes. We find that the change of the section entanglement Chern number protects the Weyl point of the entanglement Hamiltonian and the parity of the number of Weyl points distinguishes the strong topological insulator phase from the weak topological insulator phase.

Bulk-edge correspondence in topological transport and pumping

The bulk-edge correspondence (BEC) refers to a one-to-one relation between the bulk and edge properties ubiquitous in topologically nontrivial systems. Depending on the setup, BEC manifests in different forms and govern the spectral and transport properties of topological insulators and semimetals. Although the topological pump is theoretically old, BEC in the pump has been established just recently [1] motivated by the state-of-the-art experiments using cold atoms [2,3]. The center of mass (CM) of a system with boundaries shows a sequence of quantized jumps in the adiabatic limit associated with the edge states. Although the bulk is adiabatic, the edge is inevitably non-adiabatic in the experimental setup or in any numerical simulations. Still the pumped charge is quantized and carried by the bulk. Its quantization is guaranteed by a compensation between the bulk and edges. We show that in the presence of disorder the pumped charge continues to be quantized despite the appearance of non-quantized jumps.

Quantum Hall effect of Dirac fermions on the surface of a topological insulator

We study the quantum Hall effect of Dirac fermions on the surface of a Wilson-Dirac type topological insulator thin film in the strong topological insulating phase. Although a magnetic field breaks time reversal symmetry of the bulk, the surface states can survive even in a strong field regime. We examine how the Landau levels of the surface states are affected by symmetry breaking perturbations.

Entanglement Chern Number of the Kane-Mele Model with Ferromagnetism

The entanglement Chern number, the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian, is used to charac- terize the Kane-Mele model, which is a typical model of the quantum spin Hall phase with the time reversal symmetry. We first obtain the global phase diagram of the Kane-Mele model in terms of the entanglement spin Chern number, which is defined by using a spin subspace as a subspace to be traced out in preparing the entanglement Hamiltonian. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of the entanglement Chern number without the time reversal symmetry and spin conservation by extending the Kane-Mele model to include the Zeeman term. The numerical results confirm that the sum of the entanglement spin Chern number equals to the Chern number.

Atomistic mechanism of perfect alignment of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted a great deal of attention because of their possible use in information processing and electromagnetic sensing technologies. We examined theatomistic generation mechanism for the NV defect aligned in the [111] direction of C(111) substrates. We found that N is incorporated in the C bilayers during the lateral growth arising from a sequence of kink propagation along the step edge down to [-1,-1,2]. As a result, the atomic configuration with the N-atom lone-pair pointing in the [111] direction is formed, which causes preferential alignment of NVs. Our model is consistent with recent experimental data for perfect NV alignment in C(111) substrates.

Characterizing the weak topological properties: Berry phase point of view

We propose classification schemes for characterizing two-dimensional topological phases with nontrivial weak indices. Here, "weak" implies that the Chern number in the corresponding phase is trivial, while the system shows edge states along specific boundaries. As concrete examples, we analyze different versions of the so-called Wilson-Dirac model with (i) anisotropic Wilson terms, (ii) next nearest neighbor hopping terms, and (iii) a superlattice generalization of the model, here in the tight-binding implementation. For types (i) and (ii) a graphic classification of strong properties is successfully generalized for classifying weak properties. As for type (iii), weak properties are attributed to quantized Berry phase pi along a Wilson loop.

Spherical topological insulator

The electronic spectrum on the spherical surface of a topological insulator reflects an active property of the helical surface state that stems from a constraint on its spin on a curved surface. The induced effective vector potential (spin connection) can be interpreted as an effective vector potential associated with a fictitious magnetic monopole induced at the center of the sphere. The strength of the induced magnetic monopole is found to be g=2pi, -2pi, being the smallest finite (absolute) value compatible with the Dirac quantization condition. We have established an explicit correspondence between the bulk Hamiltonian and the effective Dirac operator on the curved spherical surface. An explicit construction of the surface spinor wave functions implies a rich spin texture possibly realized on the surface of topological insulator nanoparticles. The electronic spectrum inferred by the obtained effective surface Dirac theory, confirmed also by the bulk tight-binding calculation, suggests a specific photo absorption/emission spectrum of such nanoparticles.

Index theorem for topological heterostructure systems

We apply the Niemi-Semenoff index theorem to an s-wave superconductor junction system attached with a magnetic insulator on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We find that the total number of the Majorana zero energy bound states is governed not only by the gapless helical mode but also by the massive modes localized at the junction interface. The result implies that the topological protection for Majorana zero modes in class D heterostructure junctions may be broken down under a particular but realistic condition.

Generalized index theorem for topological superconductors with Yang-Mills-Higgs couplings

We investigate an index theorem for a Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian (BdGH) describing a topological superconductor with Yang-Mills-Higgs couplings in arbitrary dimensions. We find that the index of the BdGH is determined solely by the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs fields and is independent of the gauge fields. It can be nonvanishing if the dimensionality of the order parameter space is equal to the spatial dimensions. In the presence of point defects there appear localized zero energy states at the defects. Consistency of the index with the existence of zero energy bound states is examined explicitly in a vortex background in two dimensions and in a monopole background in three dimensions.

Majorana bound state of a Bogoliubov-de Gennes-Dirac Hamiltonian in arbitrary dimensions

We study a Majorana zero-energy state bound to a hedgehog-like point defect in a topological superconductor described by a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG)-Dirac type effective Hamiltonian. We first give an explicit wave function of a Majorana state by solving the BdG equation directly, from which an analytical index can be obtained. Next, by calculating the corresponding topological index, we show a precise equivalence between both indices to confirm the index theorem. Finally, we apply this observation to reexamine the role of another topological invariant, i.e., the Chern number associated with the Berry curvature proposed in the study of protected zero modes along the lines of topological classification of insulators and superconductors. We show that the Chern number is equivalent to the topological index, implying that it indeed reflects the number of zero-energy states. Our theoretical model belongs to the BDI class from the viewpoint of symmetry, whereas the spatial dimension of the system is left arbitrary throughout the paper.

Index theorem and Majorana zero modes along a non-Abelian vortex in a color superconductor

Color superconductivity in high density QCD exhibits the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase. To explore zero modes in the CFL phase in the presence of a non-Abelian vortex with an SU(2) symmetry in the vortex core, we apply the index theorem to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian. From the calculation of the topological index, we find that triplet, doublet and singlet sectors of SU(2) have certain number of chiral Majorana zero modes in the limit of vanishing chemical potential. We also solve the BdG equation by the use of the series expansion to show that the number of zero modes and their chirality match the result of the index theorem. From particle-hole symmetry of the BdG Hamiltonian, we conclude that if and only if the index of a given sector is odd, one zero mode survives generically for a finite chemical potential. We argue that this result should hold nonperturbatively even in the high density limit.

Topological low-energy modes in N=0 Landau levels of graphene: a possibility of a quantum-liquid ground state

We point out that the zero-energy Landau level of Dirac fermions in graphene can be, in the presence of a repulsive electron-electron interaction, split into two (levels) associated with a "bond ordering" formation having a "Kekule pattern", which respects the chiral symmetry. Since the Kekule pattern has a three-fold degeneracy, domain structures are implied, for which we show that in-gap states localized along the domain boundaries exist as topological states. Based on this a possibility of a quantum-liquid ground state of graphene in magnetic fields is discussed.

Chern Numbers in Discretized Brillouin Zone: Efficient Method of Computing (Spin) Hall Conductances

We present a manifestly gauge-invariant description of Chern numbers associated with the Berry connection defined on a discretized Brillouin zone. It provides an efficient method of computing (spin) Hall conductances without specifying gauge-fixing conditions. We demonstrate that it correctly reproduces quantized Hall conductances even on a coarsely discretized Brillouin zone. A gauge-dependent integer-valued field, which plays a key role in the formulation, is evaluated in several gauges. An extension to the non-Abelian Berry connection is also given.

Characterization of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains according to the constituent spins

The low-energy structure and the thermodynamic properties of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins $S$ and $s$ are investigated by the use of numerical tools as well as the spin-wave theory. The elementary excitations are calculated through an efficient quantum Monte Carlo technique featuring imaginary-time correlation functions and are characterized in terms of interacting spin waves. The thermal behavior is analyzed with particular emphasis on its ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic dual aspect. The extensive numerical and analytic calculations lead to the classification of the one-dimensional ferrimagnetic behavior according to the constituent spins: the ferromagnetic ($S>2s$), antiferromagnetic ($S<2s$), and balanced ($S=2s$) ferrimagnetism.

Combination of Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Features in Heisenberg Ferrimagnets

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of Heisenberg ferrimagnetic mixed-spin chains both numerically and analytically with particular emphasis on the combination of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic features. Employing a new density-matrix renormalization-group technique as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method, we reveal the overall thermal behavior: At very low temperatures, the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility times temperature behave like $T^{1/2}$ and $T^{-1}$, respectively, whereas at intermediate temperatures, they exhibit a Schottky-like peak and a minimum, respectively. Developing the modified spin-wave theory, we complement the numerical findings and give a precise estimate of the low-temperature behavior.

Thermodynamic Properties of Heisenberg Ferrimagnetic Spin Chains: Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Crossover

We study thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnet with antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled two kinds of spins 1 and 1/2. The specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility are calculated employing a modified spin-wave theory as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method. The specific heat is in proportion to $T^{1/2}$ at low enough temperatures but shows a Schottky-like peak at mid temperatures. The susceptibility diverges as $T^{-2}$. We reveal that at low temperatures the model is regarded as a ferromagnet, while at mid temperatures it behaves like a gapped antiferromagnet.

Haldane's Fractional Exclusion Statistics for Multicomponent Systems

The idea of fractional exclusion statistics proposed by Haldane is applied to systems with internal degrees of freedom, and its thermodynamics is examined. In case of one dimension, various bulk quantities calculated show that the critical behavior of such systems can be described by $c=1$ conformal field theories and conformal weights are completely characterized by statistical interactions. It is also found that statistical interactions have intimate relationship with a topological order matrix in Chern-Simons theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect.
