Lee-Yang zeros and edge singularity in a mean-field approach

The analytic structure of the partition function in finite-volume systems is investigated at complex chemical potentials in a minimal mean-field effective model of QCD with finite-size effects incorporated. We discuss the temperature dependence of the Lee-Yang zeros and their relation to the edge singularity for various system sizes. Different methods for locating the critical point based on finite-size scaling of Lee-Yang zeros and susceptibility ratios are compared. We demonstrate that these methods can successfully identify the critical point, whereas a careful treatment of corrections from irrelevant operators is crucial for its accurate determination.

Thermal liquid-gas phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas

We theoretically investigate the thermodynamic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional single-component dipolar Fermi gas at finite temperatures. A self-bound fermionic droplet can be achieved by exchange correlations with long-range dipole-dipole interactions under quasi-one-dimensional confinement, where the interaction can be tuned by tilting the dipoles along the system coordinate. Using the Hartree-Fock approximation, we show how the liquid-gas phase transition occurs in this system and elucidate the finite-temperature phase structure consisting of a gas phase, liquid phase, gas-liquid coexistence phase, and spinodal phase. We also discuss its similarity to the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter through a comparison with phenomenological models. By examining the experimental conditions for realizing self-bound fermionic droplets, we find that microwave-shielded fermionic polar molecules are promising candidates. Our results will be useful for an interdisciplinary understanding of self-bound fermionic matter as well as an analog quantum simulation of nuclear systems.

Thermodynamics of fermionic excitations in heavy-quark QCD

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of fermionic excitations in heavy-quark QCD on the lattice with Wilson fermions. The grand potential is calculated analytically in the hopping parameter expansion (HPE) on the basis of the cumulant expansion. Using the grand potential, we compute the quark number susceptibilities and their ratios up to next-to-leading order in the HPE. The ratio of fourth- to second-order susceptibilities is shown to be unity (nine) in the deconfined (confined) phase at the leading order. Excitation properties of baryonic and quark modes in each phase are also investigated utilizing the Boltzmann statistics. We obtain an analytic formula for the quark excitation energy in the deconfined phase, while that for baryonic excitations in the confined phase is decomposed into flavor multiplets.

Scale setting and hadronic properties in light quark sector with $(2+1)$-flavor Wilson fermions at the physical point

We report scale setting and hadronic properties for our new lattice QCD gauge configuration set (HAL-conf-2023). We employ $(2+1)$-flavor nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions with stout smearing and the Iwasaki gauge action on a $96^4$ lattice, and generate configurations of 8,000 trajectories at the physical point. We show the basic properties of the configurations such as the plaquette value, topological charge distribution and their auto-correlation times. The scale setting is performed by detailed analyses of the $Ω$ baryon mass. We calculate the physical results of quark masses, decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons and single hadron spectra in light quark sector. The masses of the stable hadrons are found to agree with the experimental values within a sub-percent level.

Density-Induced Hadron-Quark Crossover via the Formation of Cooper Triples

We discuss the hadron--quark crossover accompanied by the formation of Cooper triples (three-body counterpart of Cooper pairs) by analogy with the Bose--Einstein condensate to Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer crossover in two-component fermionic systems. Such a crossover is different from a phase transition, which often involves symmetry breaking. We calculate the in-medium three-body energy from the three-body $T$-matrix with a phenomenological three-body force characterizing a bound hadronic state in vacuum. With increasing density, the hadronic bound-state pole smoothly undergoes a crossover toward the Cooper triple phase where the in-medium three-body clusters coexist with the quark Fermi sea. The relation to the quarkyonic matter model can also be found in a natural manner.

Nuclear force with LapH smearing

The nuclear forces are determined by combining the HAL QCD method and a new type of source smearing technique. The new smearing is a projection to a space spanned by the lowest-lying eigenvectors of the free Laplacian operator on a lattice, which enables efficient calculation of hadron correlators at an affordable cost by utilizing the hadron-level momentum conservations. We find that this new approach reduces the statistical and systematic errors in the resultant nuclear forces.

Cooper Triples in Attractive Three-Component Fermions: Implication for Hadron-Quark Crossover

We investigate many-body properties of equally populated three-component fermions with attractive three-body contact interaction in one dimension. A diagrammatic approach suggests the possible occurrence of Cooper triples at low temperature, which are three-body counterparts of Cooper pairs with a two-body attraction. We develop a minimal framework that bridges the crossover from tightly-bound trimers to Cooper triples with increasing chemical potential and show how the formation of Cooper triples occurs in the grand-canonical phase diagram. Moreover, we argue that this non-trivial crossover is similar to the hadron-quark crossover proposed in dense matter. A coexistence of medium-induced triples and the underlying Fermi sea at positive chemical potential is analogous to quarkyonic matter consisting of baryonic excitations and the underlying quark Fermi sea. The comparison with the existing quantum Monte Carlo results implies that the emergence of these kinds of three-body states can be a microscopic origin of the peak of the sound velocity along the crossover.

Three-body crossover from a Cooper triple to bound trimer state in three-component Fermi gases near a triatomic resonance

We theoretically investigate ground-state properties of a three-component Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions between different components near a triatomic resonance where bound trimers are about to appear. Using variational equations for in-medium two- and three-body cluster states in three dimensions, we elucidate the competition of pair and triple formations due to the Fermi surface effects. We present the ground-state phase diagram that exhibits transition from a Cooper pair to Cooper triple state and crossover from a Cooper triple to tightly bound trimer state at negative scattering lengths. This three-body crossover is analogous to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensation crossover observed in a two-component Fermi gas. We predict that the threshold scattering length $a_{-}$ for three-body states can be shifted towards the weak-coupling side due to the emergence of Cooper triples.

Unitary $p$-wave Fermi gas in one dimension

We elucidate universal many-body properties of a one-dimensional, two-component ultracold Fermi gas near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance. The low-energy scattering in this system can be characterized by two parameters, that is, $p$-wave scattering length and effective range. At the unitarity limit where the $p$-wave scattering length diverges and the effective range is reduced to zero without conflicting with the causality bound, the system obeys universal thermodynamics as observed in a unitary Fermi gas with contact $s$-wave interaction in three dimensions. It is in contrast to a Fermi gas with the $p$-wave resonance in three dimensions in which the effective range is inevitably finite. We present the universal equation of state in this unitary $p$-wave Fermi gas within the many-body $T$-matrix approach as well as the virial expansion method. Moreover, we examine the single-particle spectral function in the high-density regime where the virial expansion is no longer valid. On the basis of the Hartree-like self-energy shift at the divergent scattering length, we conjecture that the equivalence of the Bertsch parameter across spatial dimensions holds even for a one-dimensional unitary $p$-wave Fermi gas.

Complex Langevin study for polarons in an attractively interacting one-dimensional two-component Fermi gas

We investigate a polaronic excitation in a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact attractive interactions, using the complex Langevin method, which is a promising approach to evade a possible sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the complex Langevin method works correctly in a wide range of temperature, interaction strength, and population imbalance. The Fermi polaron energy extracted from the two-point imaginary Green's function is not sensitive to the temperature and the impurity concentration in the parameter region we considered. Our results show a good agreement with the solution of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz at zero temperature.

Low-Dimensional Fluctuations and Pseudogap in Gaudin-Yang Fermi Gases

Pseudogap is a ubiquitous phenomenon in strongly correlated systems such as high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors, ultracold atoms and nuclear physics. While pairing fluctuations inducing the pseudogap are known to be enhanced in low-dimensional systems, such effects have not been explored well in one of the most fundamental 1D models, that is, Gaudin-Yang model. In this work, we show that the pseudogap effect can be visible in the single-particle excitation in this system using a diagrammatic approach. Fermionic single-particle spectra exhibit a unique crossover from the double-particle dispersion to pseudogap state with increasing the attractive interaction and the number density at finite temperature. Surprisingly, our results of thermodynamic quantities in unpolarized and polarized gases show an excellent agreement with the recent quantum Monte Carlo and complex Langevin results, even in the region where the pseudogap appears.

Distribution of solutions of the fastest apparent convergence condition in optimized perturbation theory and its relation to anti-Stokes lines

We discuss fundamental properties of the fastest apparent convergence (FAC) condition which is used as a variational criterion in optimized perturbation theory (OPT). We examine an integral representation of the FAC condition and a distribution of the zeros of the integral in a complex artificial parameter space on the basis of theory of Lefschetz thimbles. We find that the zeros accumulate on a certain line segment so-called anti-Stokes line in the limit $K \to \infty$, where $K$ is a truncation order of a perturbation series. This phenomenon gives an underlying mechanism that physical quantities calculated by OPT can be insensitive to the choice of the artificial parameter.

Modifying partition functions: a way to solve the sign problem

A possible method to solve the sign problem is developed by modifying the original theory. Considering several modifications of the partition function, the observable in the original theory is reconstructed from the identity connecting the observables in the original and modified theories. We demonstrate that our method gives the correct results even if the original theory has the severe sign problem by using a simple 1-dimensional integral.

On a modification method of Lefschetz thimbles

The QCD at finite density is not well understood yet, where standard Monte Carlo simulation suffers from the sign problem. In order to overcome the sign problem, the method of Lefschetz thimble has been explored. Basically, the original sign problem can be less severe in a complexified theory due to the constancy of the imaginary part of an action on each thimble. However, global phase factors assigned on each thimble still remain. Their interference is not negligible in a situation where a large number of thimbles contribute to the partition function, and this could also lead to a sign problem. In this study, we propose a method to resolve this problem by modifying the structure of Lefschetz thimbles such that only a single thimble is relevant to the partition function. It can be shown that observables measured in the original and modified theories are connected by a simple identity. We exemplify that our method works well in a toy model.

Dirac-mode analysis for quark number density and its application for deconfinement transition

The quark number density at finite imaginary chemical potential is investigated in the lattice QCD using the Dirac-mode expansion. We find the analytical formula of the quark number density in terms of the Polyakov loop in the large quark mass regime. On the other hand, in the small quark mass region, the quark number density is investigated by using the quenched lattice QCD simulation. The quark number density is found to strongly depend on the low-lying Dirac modes while its sign does not change. This result leads to that the quark number holonomy is not sensitive to the low-lying Dirac modes. We discuss the confinement-deconfinement transition from the property of the quark number density and the quark number holonomy.

Relating Quark Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QCD

We study the relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Using lattice QCD formalism, we analytically express the various "confinement indicators", such as the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, the Wilson loop, the inter-quark potential and the string tension, in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes. In the Dirac spectral representation, there appears a power of the Dirac eigenvalue $λ_n$ such as $λ_n^{N_t-1}$, which behaves as a reduction factor for small $λ_n$. Consequently, since this reduction factor cannot be cancelled, the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes give negligibly small contribution to the confinement quantities, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct, one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. In other words, there is some independence of quark confinement from chiral symmetry breaking, which can generally lead to different transition temperatures/densities for deconfinement and chiral restoration. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain-wall fermion kernels, respectively, and find the similar results. The independence of quark confinement from chiral symmetry breaking seems to be natural, because confinement is realized independently of quark masses and heavy quarks are also confined even without the chiral symmetry.

Dirac-mode expansion of quark number density and its implications of the confinement-deconfinement transition

We investigate the quark number density at finite imaginary chemical potential by using the Dirac-mode expansion. In the large quark mass region, it is found that the quark number density can be expressed by the Polyakov loop and its conjugate in all order of the large quark mass expansion. Then, there are no specific Dirac-modes which dominantly contribute to the quark number density. In comparison, the small quark mass region is explored by using the quenched lattice QCD simulation. We found that the absolute value of the quark number density strongly depends on the low-lying Dirac-modes, but its sign does not. This means that the existence of the Roberge-Weiss transition which is characterized by the singular behavior of the quark number density is not sensitive to low-lying Dirac-modes. This property enables us to discuss the confinement-deconfinement transition from the behavior of the quark number density via the quark number holonomy.

Some Relations for Quark Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QCD

We analytically study the relation between quark confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in QCD. In terms of the Dirac eigenmodes, we derive some formulae for the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, and the string tension from the Wilson loop. We also investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the eigenmodes of the Wilson, the clover and the domain wall fermion kernels, respectively. For the confinement quantities, the low-lying Dirac/fermion eigenmodes are found to give negligible contribution, while they are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. These relations indicate no direct one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, which seems to be natural because confinement is realized independently of the quark mass.
