Shadowless Projection Mapping for Tabletop Workspaces with Synthetic Aperture Projector

Projection mapping (PM) enables augmented reality (AR) experiences without requiring users to wear head-mounted displays and supports multi-user interaction. It is regarded as a promising technology for a variety of applications in which users interact with content superimposed onto augmented objects in tabletop workspaces, including remote collaboration, healthcare, industrial design, urban planning, artwork creation, and office work. However, conventional PM systems often suffer from projection shadows when users occlude the light path. Prior approaches employing multiple distributed projectors can compensate for occlusion, but suffer from latency due to computational processing, degrading the user experience. In this research, we introduce a synthetic-aperture PM system that uses a significantly larger number of projectors, arranged densely in the environment, to achieve delay-free, shadowless projection for tabletop workspaces without requiring computational compensation. To address spatial resolution degradation caused by subpixel misalignment among overlaid projections, we develop and validate an offline blur compensation method whose computation time remains independent of the number of projectors. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our shadowless PM plays a critical role in achieving a fundamental goal of PM: altering material properties without evoking projection-like impression. Specifically, we define this perceptual impression as ``sense of projection (SoP)'' and establish a PM design framework to minimize the SoP based on user studies.

Modular Theory for Operator Algebra in Bounded Region of Space-Time and Quantum Entanglement

We consider the quantum state seen by an observer in the diamond-shaped region, which is a globally hyperbolic open submanifold of the Minkowski space-time. It is known from the operator-algebraic argument that the vacuum state of the quantum field transforming covariantly under the conformal group looks like a thermal state on the von Neumann algebra generated by the field operators on the diamond-shaped region of the Minkowski space-time. Here, we find, in the case of the free massless Hermitian scalar field in the 2-dimensional Minkowski space-time, that such a state can in fact be identified with a certain entangled quantum state. By doing this, we obtain the thermodynamic quantities such as the Casimir energy and the von Neumann entropy of the thermal state in the diamond-shaped region, and show that the Bekenstein bound for the entropy-to-energy ratio is saturated. We further speculate on a possible information-theoretic interpretation of the entropy in terms of the probability density functions naturally determined from the Tomita-Takesaki modular flow in the diamond-shaped region.

Apparent Horizons with Nontrivial Topology and the Hyperhoop Conjecture in Six-Dimensional Space-Times

We investigate the validity of the hyperhoop conjecture, which claims to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for the formation of black hole horizons in higher-dimensional space-times. Here we consider momentarily static, conformally flat initial data sets each describing a gravitational field of uniform massive k-sphere sources, for k=1,2, on the five-dimensional Cauchy surface. The numerical result shows the validity of the hyperhoop conjecture for a wide range of model parameters. We also confirm for the first time the existence of an apparent horizon homeomorphism to S**2 x S**2 or S**1 x S**3, which is a higher-dimensional generalization of the black ring.

You Cannot Press Out the Black Hole

It is shown that a ball-shaped black hole region homeomorphic with D**n cannot be pressed out, along whichever axis penetrating the black hole region, into a black ring with a doughnut-shaped black hole region homeomorphic with S**1 x D**(n-1). A more general prohibition law for the change of the topology of black holes, including a version of no-bifurcation theorems for black holes, is given.
